The Shone Family of Buckley,

Lily Shone was my (Peter Kelsall’s) grandmother, my mother’s mother. The Shones are a Buckley area family that can be traced back to the 1500’s in the parish registers. Our direct line traces back from Lily through William (b. 1845), Samuel (1817), William (1789), Thomas (1766), John (1740) and (probably) William.

Lily Shone and John Iredale Lily Shone was born in Buckley 25 October, 1879, the 7th child of William Shone and Fanny Peters.

In 1881 and 1891 she was living with family in Church Road Buckley. In 1901 she was in service with William Nuttall, a medical practitioner, at Market St, Little Lever, Bolton. Lily met my grandfather, John Iredale, while she was in service (i.e. working as a live-in servant) in Lancashire. John came from Huddersfield in Yorkshire but grew up in Oldham in Lancashire. His mother and grandmother were confectioners. Lily and John were married 17 October 1906 at St. Matthews, Buckley. In the parish register John is listed as a greengrocer and Lily’s address is given as Southport.

Lily and John opened a pie and peas shop in the Lane End area of Buckley, which later became a bakery and cake shop and which they operated until retirement in the mid 1950’s. John died in 1957 but Lily survived to the age of 92, passing away in 1971. After retiring from the shop, Lily and John lived in Tramroad, Buckley next door to my father’s sister, Gwen and her husband, Jack Whitehead. This was near St. Matthews Church and around the corner from where Lily lived as a girl.

William Shone and Fanny Peters My great-grandfather, William Shone, was born in Fenton, Staffordshire 14 May, 1845. His parents were Samuel Shone and Esther Bloor. He died in Buckley in 1925.

William married Fanny Peters in 1866. Fanny was the daughter of Richard Peters and Martha Roberts, born 5 July 1848 in Buckley. She died in Buckley in 1916. Richard Peters was born 21 August 1810, Bistre (baptised: 9 September 1810, St Deiniol’s, Hawarden, son of Edward Peters and Frances Gittins, brickmaker, Beestree [sic]. He died 7 November 1869 , Buckley. Martha Roberts was born 14 December 1815 Buckley, baptised 7 January 1816 Hawarden, daughter of William Roberts and Elizabeth Prince. She died 31 November 1891 Buckley, buried: 3 December 1891, aged 76. The Shones, Peters, and other families were all residents of the Buckley Mountain/Knowle Lane/Church Road/Lane End areas of Buckley

William and Fanny had 12 children between 1867 and 1889. At the time of the 1881 census, William and Fanny were living in Church Road with their children, Samuel, Emma, William, Jesse, James, Esther and Lily who was just one year old. (Edna, Frank, Charlotte, Emily and Lance were not yet born.) William is listed in the census as a brickmaker and Samuel, aged 15, as a brickrunner. Samuel died in 1882, the following year. William, Fanny, Samuel and Emma are buried at St. Matthews.

Later, after Fanny Shone died, William and his daughter, Edna, successfully applied for the post of custodian at the chapel and Edna lived at the Chapel House until her death in 1966. My Kelsall family also attended the Congregational Church.

Samuel Shone and Esther Bloor The current Shone family as we know it derives from three of the four sons of Samuel Shone and Esther Bloor. Samuel was born in Buckley in 1817 the son of William Shone and Charlotte Peers. He died in 1897.

Esther Bloor was my (Peter Kelsall’s) great-great-grandmother. She was born September 22, 1821 in Hanley, Staffordshire in the English Potteries district. Her parents were Enoch Bloor and Elizabeth Pool and she was one of at least 9 children, including also Harriett, Edny, James, Edward, Enoch, Joseph and Jesse, and Mary Ann. Esther died in 1899.

Esther married Samuel Shone on December 15, 1839 in Hanley, Staffordshire. They subsequently lived in Buckley, Flintshire and had eight children.

Samuel was born in Buckley and it seems likely that he was working in the Potteries when he met Esther. Buckley was also a pottery town, thus providing a possible connection, but Samuel is listed as a coal miner on his marriage certificate and in the 1841 census. According to the birthplaces listed in the 1881 census, they must have moved to Buckley between the births of their third son, Samuel - who was born in Longton, Staffordshire, and James who was born in Buckley. This places it between September 1847 and August 1850.

Children of Samuel and Esther Emma 1840 Died 1842 age 2 Enoch Bloor 1842 unmarried at age 38 in 1881, died 1911 William 1845 My great grandfather married Fanny Peters, died 1925 Samuel 1847 Died 1853 age 6 James 18502 Married Arabella Tomlinson, father of John Samuel Shone who was for many years the licensee of the Horse and Jockey pub Mary Ann 1853 Married Samuel Jones Alfred 1856 Married Esther Jones, emigrated to East Liverpool Ohio. Died 1905 George 1859 Married Hannah Bellis

Samuel and Esther were living in Wood St. in the Lane End district of Longton in 1841. They were then at Buckley Mountain in 1851, Church Road in 1861 and 1871, Hope View in 1881 and again in Church Road in 1891.

2 The family of Samuel and Esther’s fourth son, James, was provided to me by Steven Shone

William Shone and Charlotte Peers William Shone was born in about 1789 and died in 1864, buried at St. Matthews 3 March.

William married Charlotte Peers in 1808

William was living in Church Road in 1841 and Lane End in 1851 with a second wife, Jane Thompson whom me married in 1834..

Origins of the Shone Family in Buckley The Shone line has been assembled from various sources with my own research supplemented considerably by the work of Steven Shone, Marg Pember and others. From Steven Shone, the parents of William Shone were Thomas Shone and Mary Parry married in 1788.

C:\Users\peter.kelsall\Documents\Personal\Shone\Shone_text.doc 7 © Peter Kelsall 2016

It is then believed that Thomas Shone was the son of John and Esther______, baptized 23 February 1766.

The IGI includes 3 John Shones of about the right age: 1) John born 1740 to William Shone and Mary Read, Pentrobin: 2) John born 1743 to Edward Shone and Ellen Machilt, Broughton; and 3) John born 1746 to John Shone and Elizabeth Price. The second alternative seems less likely because of the location, i.e. Broughton rather than Pentrobin. The first alternative seems more likely than number 3 because of age at the time of marriage (25 rather than 19) and because the children’s names seem more representative of later family members. (One of John Shone and Elizabeth Price’s children was Peter Shone. Peter is a fairly common Shone name in the older Hawarden registers but does not appear at all in our line from 1740 to one instance in the early 1900s.)

Shones in Staffordshire In the 1841 census, Samuel and Esther, with daughter Emma 8 months old, were living in the Lane End district of Stoke-on-Trent now part of Longton. Samuel is listed as a coal miner and Esther as a pot painter. They are listed in Wood St., which is in the centre of modern Longton, off King Street, opposite Longton Station. Thomas Shone is also listed in Wood St., with wife Martha and children, Edward, Thomas and Charlotte. Based on age and his mother’s name, Charlotte, Thomas is identified as Samuel’s brother born in 1813. (Thomas is probably the same Thomas found in Tranmere in 1881.) William Shone was listed in Church St., living with Charles and Sarah Jones. This is in the centre of Stoke near the Spode Museum. While I have no other record of William it is possible that he was another brother of Samuel’s, named after father William. Thomas and William are listed as coal miners like Samuel.

In 1845, Samuel and Esther were living in China St., Fenton, as listed on the birth certificate of their second son, William, my great grandfather. China St. is in the centre of Fenton about one mile from Wood St. in Longton.

In the 1841 census, the Bloor family was living in the Terrace Building in Fenton, close to Foley Mill. This was apparently a large building that housed many families shown with the same address in the census. It is identified on the contemporary Ordnance Survey map located near the center of Fenton approximately in the location of the present-day north-south spur of the A50 adjacent to Glebedale Park. The Terrace Building was located near Glebe and Oldfield Collieries and was near many china works including Minerva, Lane Delph and Park.

Shones in East Liverpool, Ohio Samuel and Esther’s fifth son, Alfred, emigrated to East Liverpool in 1880 following his cousin, James Bloor, who had emigrated from Staffordshire the previous year. (James was the son of Esther’s brother, Joseph.) Alfred Shone married Esther Jones in 29 June 1880.

Esther was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Jones (nee Peters) of Bannel born 22 March 1859 (see Appendix).

Alfred sailed from Liverpool one day after he and Esther Jones were married in Chester. Esther (Jones) Shone joined Alfred in East Liverpool one year later, traveling alone via New York and Pittsburgh. They had eight children and have descendants in East Liverpool and elsewhere in the US. Alfred Shone died 14 Oct 1905 in East Liverpool. Esther (Jones) Shone died 1 Feb 1942.

The Shone and Bloor family histories in East Liverpool have been collected by Esther (Thompson) Jones, Esther Bloor’s great granddaughter and my (Peter Kelsall’s) second cousin once removed. Esther Jones started corresponding with the Shones in Buckley in the 1960’s after she had written to the Buckley vicar, and she and her husband, Syd, visited Buckley in 1972. Esther gave me the photographs of Samuel Shone and Esther Bloor, and many old letters and newspaper cuttings that describe the Shones’ and Jones’ lives in the 1800’s.

Origin and Distribution of the Shone Name The name Shone derives from Sion, the old Welsh form of John (there is no letter J in Welsh). Shone is a holdover that did not convert to Jones and is concentrated in northeast and adjacent English counties. In the 1881 census there were 1300 people named Shone living in and Wales with 90% in five counties, , Lancashire, Flintshire, Denbighshire and Shropshire. There were 212 people named Shone in Flintshire

Jones Family of Bannel

C:\Users\peter.kelsall\Documents\Personal\Shone\Shone_text.doc 13 Biography of Esther Jones Shone of Bannel and East Liverpool Ohio

The biography was provided by Esther Thompson Jones of East Liverpool, Ohio. Esther was the granddaughter of Esther Jones. Notes have been added by Peter Kelsall.

Esther Thompson Jones started corresponding with members of the Shone family in Buckley in the 1960’s after she had first written to the Buckley vicar. She and her husband, Syd, visited Buckley in 1972. She is the cousin, once removed, of Peter Kelsall’s late grandmother, Lily Shone.

Esther Jones Shonei Biography as told to her grand daughter, Martha Thompson, about the year 1936

Home was a stone cottage, with an open fireplace, had a well in yard and two cowsheds. Went to work for Squire Wilson Jones, at the age of 17, in September. One of the Squire's daughters came for me, and I stayed there until 1881ii. I had charge of the upstairs, the schoolrooms etc.

I was married to Alfred Shoneiii June 29, 1880iv. He came to the United States the next dayv.

One wet morning, a Sunday morning, when she was about 11 years old, she went to the corner of the garden to look to see if the well was filling up after the heavy rain. She was in her bare feet, and she slipped at the edge of the well, falling in. She was very frightened and grasped the staple, at the top, which was the only thing that saved her. With a very white face and a wildly beating heart, she pulled herself out of the water. The well was "land water" used for general purposes, while the spring water was used for drinking. They filled the barrels with land water. When the well was dry the men brought water from the "marl pit", where the cattle drank. To get to the marl pit you went up the lane and on up the field.

Grandma's brother, called Ted, went hunting with a neighbour. Some time later the man came in and said "where's Sam". In his stocking feet and long underwear, Sam came out of the bedroom to hear that Ted had been shot. Without finishing dressing, the distracted father rushed down the lane for the doctor. Grandma said the neighbours thought he had gone crazy. The doctor and Sam drove back in the doctor's "gig". They finished carrying the boy into the cottage but the boy had lost too much blood and was beyond the doctor's helpvi.

Grandma went to School, run by the Hawarden Parish. She had a man teacher and two girl teachers, and the man's wife came in the afternoons and taught sewing. It was a stone schoolhouse. They wrote on slates with slate pencils and blackboards framed the walls. Grandma went to school till the fourth "standard", then she had to stay home with her ailing mother.

I remember Grandma showing me a small red clothbound book. It was about four inches wide and five inches long. The pages were of thin paper with fine black letters, somewhat stained. The book was a gift from her minister, Rev. Bateman, entitled "Poems for Every Day in the Christian Year".

In the year 1881, Mr. Shone sent her steamship tickets to come to the United States, where he had made her a homevii. On a May morning she left her home to sail to her husband. She went to Liverpool and stayed all night at her Uncle's home and sailed the following day. Her relatives (father, uncle, and Mr. Shone's brother) came to the Steamship "Montreal", and bid her a happy and safe voyage. On board she made many friends and later corresponded with some who later made their homes in California. They were "shut-down" two days because of the raging sea.

"I often laugh" Grandma said, while patiently threading a needle, "to think that I did venture up on deck, for another girl was terribly seasick. She wanted a bottle of beer to quiet her nerves and asked me to get it for her. The rolling sea rocked the boat and the bottle slipped from my hands and went clattering down the deck as I darted after it to rescue it. Back I went without the bottle - it was too lively for me to catch it." I could have had a beau on board ship if I'd wanted him. I told him I was married but he thought I was joshing him. Every day he'd come strolling by our berth.

When we landed at New York, I was lucky enough to travel with some people till we got to Alliance (a lady and her two children). We were from May 1 to May 18 - 18 days sailing from when we left home.

A man went with Grandma and put her on the Erie Line instead of the Pennsylvania. The train came through Cleveland.

"I remember saying to the conductor "You tell me when we come to Pittsburgh" believing, of course, that I was on the Pennsylvania train, as I should have been. Mrs. Robotham and Mr. Shone were at Pittsburgh waiting my arrival." She cried and was quite upset but someone had put her on a Cleveland-Pittsburgh train and all turned out all right.

She began housekeeping in East Liverpool, at Third Street.

Notes by Peter Kelsall

i Esther Jones was the daughter of Samuel Jones and Hannah Peters. She was born in the Bannel 22 March 1859 and died on February 1, 1942 in East Liverpool, Ohio.

ii In 1881 Esther Jones (by then Esther Shone) was a housemaid at 12 Nicolas St., Chester, head of the household Johanna Jones (no relation). Other servants included Ann Roberts, 50, from Hope, and Martha Griffiths, 20, from Mold.

iii Alfred Shone was the fifth son of Samuel Shone and Esther Bloor. Samuel was born in Buckley and he was working as a collier in the Potteries when he met Esther. Esther and Samuel were married on December 15, 1839 in Hanley and moved to Buckley between September 1847 and August 1850. Alfred's brother, William, was this author's great grandfather. Alfred Shone died in East Liverpool in 1905.

iv Esther married Alfred Shone 29 June 1880 at the Parish Church of St. John, Chester. Alfred and Esther had eight children and have descendants in East Liverpool and elsewhere in the United States.

v When Alfred emigrated to East Liverpool in 1880 he was following his cousin, James Bloor, who had emigrated from Staffordshire the previous year. (James was the son of Esther Bloor’s brother, Joseph.) Alfred and James followed many Staffordshire potters to East Liverpool.

vi Esther's brother, Edward Jones died May 15, 1867. Other siblings were Robert, Mary Ann, Henry, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary Jane, and Arthur.

vii Alfred and Esther had eight children and have descendants in East Liverpool and elsewhere in the United States. From Ellis Island records we know Esther made trips to Britain in 1902 and 1924.
