Local History Index of Materials Stored at the White Oak Library District

This is the index of the un-cataloged local history materials owned by the Lockport Branch of the White Oak Library District. To access the materials in this index, please ask the Adult Services staff to retrieve them from our back room storage to view in-house. Some of the materials are currently stored at either the Will County Historical Society (WCHS), or the Lockport Area Genealogical and Historical Society (LAGHS), and these will be noted as such in this index. To access these off-site materials, you may either contact these organizations directly, or through our Adult Services staff.

Materials in this index are stored in a vertical file and archival boxes. The following index provides information about the vertical file and the archival boxes.

Vertical files: The majority of materials in our storage room file cabinets include original and photocopies of newspaper clippings, reports, and other documents. Following the topic descriptions are the file folder headings, and beneath that are the folder headings. You may ask to see specific materials from the vertical files. All materials are in-house use only.

Archival boxes hold original documents, photographs, ledgers, and fragile material.

Materials are divided into 6 main categories: , Illinois & Michigan Canal, Library, Lockport, People, and Will County. There is much overlap between these topics and researchers may find it worthwhile to look through the entire index and search the library catalog for their subject area.

High School Yearbooks: A collection of Lockport Township High School yearbooks, 1926-present, is available for in-house viewing. Digital versions of these yearbooks are available to view through our Biblioboard database. Ask at the Adult Services desk for assistance.

Illinois Michigan Canal - Writings 42 Library The Lockport Township Public Library was formed in 1929 by the Lockport Woman’s Club. In 1969 the Lockport Township Public Library opened a facility in Crest Hill. For several years Lockport Township Public Library was the umbrella for both of these facilities as well as a service center in Romeoville. In 1981, the Lockport Township Public Library became the Des Plaines Valley Public Library District. In 2010, the Des Plaines Valley Public Library District changed its name to White Oak Library District. To date, it has one library board and library director responsible for the Lockport, Crest Hill, and Romeoville locations.

Material in this series includes the development of the initial Lockport Library, and the building of Crest Hill. The majority of items in the vertical file are newspaper clippings about library events, library newsletters, and reports.

The archival boxes contain documentation about the history of the library, and many photographs of library events, the library facilities, and library staff.

Library - Newspaper Clippings 57 Lockport Vertical files include flyers, brochures, newspaper clippings, photographs, government reports, reports made by associations and individuals, and newsletters. Researchers interested in the history of Lockport should also look through the files of the Illinois & Michigan Canal. There are several books related to the history of Lockport, and the history of the Canal in the library’s collection. Books in the collection related to the history of Will County should also be consulted.

We own the 1873 Combination Atlas Map of Will County, Illinois. Ask to see this beautifully illustrated map book.

For in-depth information about a particular organization, public or private, researchers should investigate those institutions independently to determine what materials may be available. These files are not a comprehensive inventory of every group, family, or business in Lockport. Instead, the goal is to provide a broad range of information about the city of Lockport, including its history, growth, and development.
