Halestorm Rocks the Palladium
Halestorm Rocks The Palladium Halestorm recently came through New England and played the Worcester Palladium on Nov 29. The show was nothing short of amazing. Frontwoman Lzzy Hale was on fire with her incredible vocal range as well as her ability to lay down awesome guitar riffs with the forefathers of hard rock. Opening the set was their hard and heavy track, “Mz Hyde” off of their last studio album The Strange Case Of…. The crowd was eating it up from the moment Lzzy stepped out onto the stage. The night was full of their signature tracks, old and new, and with a few surprises thrown in the mix. Known for their ability to do any songs they’ve covered justice, there were a couple curveballs in the night’s lineup of songs. First, was the classic Judas Priest song “Dissident Aggressor.” Being a huge Halestorm fan, this took me by surprise. A very pleasant surprise. To see this band rock such a killer song from one of the godfathers of heavy metal, and have Lzzy do Rob Halford such justice, was just something you had to see to believe. The other cover choice toward the end of their set was the Fleetwood Mac hit “Gold Dust Woman.” Stevie Nicks is a big influence for Lzzy’s more mellow vocals, and I can only assume that Stevie herself would be incredibly proud. The cover was absolutely flawless. I think this is how Halestorm appeals to such a wide range of age groups. They have their own classic hard rock sound, but are tweaked to appeal to younger generations. -

ANDERTON Music Festival Capitalism
1 Music Festival Capitalism Chris Anderton Abstract: This chapter adds to a growing subfield of music festival studies by examining the business practices and cultures of the commercial outdoor sector, with a particular focus on rock, pop and dance music events. The events of this sector require substantial financial and other capital in order to be staged and achieve success, yet the market is highly volatile, with relatively few festivals managing to attain longevity. It is argued that these events must balance their commercial needs with the socio-cultural expectations of their audiences for hedonistic, carnivalesque experiences that draw on countercultural understanding of festival culture (the countercultural carnivalesque). This balancing act has come into increased focus as corporate promoters, brand sponsors and venture capitalists have sought to dominate the market in the neoliberal era of late capitalism. The chapter examines the riskiness and volatility of the sector before examining contemporary economic strategies for risk management and audience development, and critiques of these corporatizing and mainstreaming processes. Keywords: music festival; carnivalesque; counterculture; risk management; cool capitalism A popular music festival may be defined as a live event consisting of multiple musical performances, held over one or more days (Shuker, 2017, 131), though the connotations of 2 the word “festival” extend much further than this, as I will discuss below. For the purposes of this chapter, “popular music” is conceived as music that is produced by contemporary artists, has commercial appeal, and does not rely on public subsidies to exist, hence typically ranges from rock and pop through to rap and electronic dance music, but excludes most classical music and opera (Connolly and Krueger 2006, 667). -

Class of 2018 Graduates Say Farewell (See Pg 22)
Cornhusker Impressions for alumni and friends of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry Class of 2018 graduates say farewell (see pg 22) Meet Xiaoxi ‘Sophie’ Cui, the first China Scholar to graduate from the College of Dentistry (see pg 24) Spring 2018 From the Dean Dear Friends and Colleagues, You may notice that this issue of Impressions is a bit larger than previous issues. Moving forward, we have decided to publish two print issues annually (instead of three). At the same time, we have started a monthly electronic newsletter, “News Bites”. If you have not received our electronic newsletter and would like to, please make sure to send your preferred email address to [email protected]. Our electronic newsletter will keep you up- to-date on a more frequent basis and includes videos and other regular columns not featured in Impressions. We have much to celebrate in this issue, including faculty members achieving major service anniversaries, new faculty leaders, and the story of how several of our faculty have made an academic career – a new career (story on page 16)! Dr. Day had the idea of being an academician for many years, eventually seeking out teaching courses to prepare her for the transition; for Dr. Zalewski, it meant pursuing an idea of being a teacher in his profession. Dr. Robin Hattervig took the leap after hosting fourth-year dental students in his practice, while Dr. Bokemper decided to “test the waters” before diving into a new career. Regardless of their journeys, we are delighted to have them on board and making significant contributions to our academic endeavors! Additionally, our teaching continues to evolve. -
