In its fifth year, the Caribbean-themed dinner and auction was an overwhelming success with 150 guests poised to have a great time and support an equally great cause. This year’s soiree raised $300,000 for the clinic — one of the island’s most vital resources. Ever year, with the help of a bevy of volunteer physicians, the clinic sees and treats nearly 700 patients comprised of employees, members and guests. Monies raised at the annual event are used for the general operating expenses of the clinic as well as new equipment and many special endeavors along the way. This year’s event was no-less of a showstopper than previous years, boasting an impressive steel-pan-inspired tropical band, an impromptu song performance by Savannah Buffett and some fancy dance moves and song from none other than event emcee Enrique Murciano. Memories were also made during the auction portion of the event. Items up- for-grabs this year included jewelry, autographed guitars, wine, trips and even Jimmy Buffett concert tickets. This year, funds raised will specifically go towards updating several pieces of medical equipment and expand the very successful Employee Wellness Program. Last year’s event was the catalyst for the thriving program – which includes a recently-added gym in the village as well as clinic-funded wellness trainers, a dedicated wellness doctor, weekly fitness classes, biometric monitoring and an upcoming three-day health immersion seminar that will showcase nutrition, health management and more. Approximately eighteen months ago, the island’s management consulted with Prevo Health Solutions, a company that specializes in evaluating employee wellness at private clubs. Prevo found an incidence of chronic conditions amongst employees but the good news was that many of these conditions could be controlled or eliminated with proper diet and exercise. Prevo helped put together the components of the wellness program, but “the clinic was instrumental in the execution of the multi-faceted plan,” says Prevo Founder and President, Rick Ladendorf. “The weight loss and the control of hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol in our employees is certainly adding up to a healthier – and more engaged — staff,” says Kevin Hutton, Clinic Director. And thanks to the program, this year’s clinic fundraiser had a very special guest. Ellarese Williams, Cat Cay’s Human Resources Representative, made a proud appearance at the event after joining the wellness program and losing over 87 pounds. And she’s not done, yet. She proclaimed that this was just the beginning of getting healthy and staying even healthier. And none of it would have been possible without this annual event, Cat Cay’s best party — and the one with the biggest heart. Not quite deserted, Cat Cay can sometimes make you feel like a castaway — in a good way — and the Cat Cay Boutique really boasts anything you could need for your (totally volun- tary) escape. But the Cat Cay Boutique goes beyond the typical straw bags and funny hats of a regular resort store. Not only does the store stock some great island essentials but if it didn’t have it before, it will have it soon. The Boutique is undergoing a re- naissance of sorts and under the direction of savvy new man- ager, Rickena Lang, and new buyer, Maria Litwack, will feature everything you need on the island including: KID GEAR Designer apparel and swimwear in sizes ranging from newborn to twelve from designers including Lilly Pulitzer, Mil- ly, Le Soleil Snapper Rock, Chach and more. Also, an abun- dance of games, toys and children’s fashion accessories and attire sporting The Cat Cay logo. SHOPPING IN PARADISE CAT CAY LOGO APPAREL AND GIFTS A fun and functional mix of logo apparel and gifts including hats, tees, jackets, sweatshirts , polo shirts, tote bags, glassware and beach towels. The boutique was already known for carrying exquisite casual wear pieces for women and for that, we have to thank long-time Cat Cay resident, Charlotte Hicks. Hicks is the founder of Sea Lily, an environmentally-con- scious line of resort wear made with natural fabrics and in- spired by life lived around the water. The idea for Sea Lily came to her while sitting on her boat, Blue Moon, in the middle of the Exumas. “My friends and I were talking about beachwear and how hard it is to find quality cover ups and tunics that are feminine, made from breathable fabrics but also practical,” says Hicks. That inspi- ration led Hicks to start a resort wear business. Part cover up, part casual wear and part beautiful batik, Hicks wanted to create something she and her friends could enjoy as well as something that would tie in with her love of the ocean. “To connect the brand with ocean conservation was very important to me. My family loves spending time in the Bahamas diving, spearing, and swimming. There are few places like it left in the world and with pollution, over-fishing and global warming, the ocean is rapidly changing… and not for the better; therefore, we decided that we would donate a portion of every sale to non-profit ocean conservation orga- nizations,” continues Hicks. “ So far Sea Lily has contributed to over 300 coral replantings in the Florida waters, numerous beach clean ups, as well as an ECO fashion show. And this is just the beginning.” From designing beautiful and breezy pieces to don atop swimwear, the Sea Lily collection expanded to include pants, blouses and more. “A lot of the inspiration for the designs comes from Cat Cay and our friends and lifestyle here,” says Hicks. In addition to Cat Cay, Sea Lily resort wear can be found in fine boutiques from Mystique Island to Casa De Campo to The Ritz Carlton. The brand has two profiles: Lily, boasting slightly more structured pieces with geometric and classic designs and Gypsy, with boho chic pieces featuring dip dyes, off-the- shoulder blouses and flirty lines. Both profiles, however, have one common goal: to design resort wear that is feminine, stylish and fun and can take you from beach to bistro or from pool to casual party.
