MONTANA University ot Montana Missoula, Montana Frlday/May 5, 1989 KAIMIN Debt causes tax return to be withheld By Lisa Meister Kaimin Reporter A former UM law student says she Is "sad dened and disheartened and angry" that the Department of Revenue is withholding her state income tax return to pay a debt she owes UM. In a letter to UM administrators, Helena resident Melody Brown wrote, “I feel I de serve more consideration than what I have received. I will never forget that when the University of Montana gives its word, it does not keep it.” UM Legal Counsel Joan Newman said, however, "We don’t agree with the facts of the letter." In 1987, Brown said, she received an emergency law school loan of $300 that was due last September.
