Since then, he’s been a research scientist at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, California, reviews editor for SunWorld magazine, and founder of four companies: The Internet Mall, iTrack.com, AnswerSquad, and ClickThruStats.com. Currently, Dave is president of Intuitive Systems and is busy launching an electronic book publishing company called Intuitive Press. What’s covered? How do I read this book? Why should I Wread this book? HTML? XHTML? CSS? Sheesh! Why not just use a Web page editor? Who am I? Welcome! “Wow! Another Web book! What makes this one different?” That’s a fair question. I want you to be confident that Creating Cool Web Sites with HTML, XHTML, and CSS will meet your needs as well as provide fun and interesting reading. So spend a minute and breeze through my preface to ensure that this is the book you seek. What This Book Is About In a nutshell, Creating Cool Web Sites with HTML, XHTML, and CSS is an introduction to HTML, XHTML, and Cascading Style Sheets. HTML is the HyperText Markup Language, and it’s the language that enables you to create and publish your own multimedia documents on the World Wide Web. Millions of users on the Internet and online services such as America Online, Earthlink, and the Microsoft Network are spending hours each day exploring the world of the Web from within their Web browser, be it Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, or any of a variety of other programs. XHTML is the modern “proper” version of HTML and is the future of the markup language. Cascading Style Sheets are also part of that future, and it’s a rare modern Web site that doesn’t use at least some element of CSS in its design and layout. By using all these technologies, you can learn to quickly and easily create attractive docu­ ments that are on the cutting edge of interactive publishing. I went through the pain of learn­ ing HTML back in 1994, the very dawn of the Web era, precisely because I wanted to spread my ideas to a global audience. For me, learning was hit or miss because the only references I could find were confusing online documents written by programmers and computer types. For you, it will be a lot easier.     DAVID TAYLOR New World Record 80494 Bass Trombone MOONRISE WITH MEMORIES Frederic Rzewski: Moonrise With Memories was commissioned by and written for David Taylor in 1978. Taylor specifically requested a piece for bass trombone, a piece that could not be played on a tenor instrument. He also suggested an accompanying ensemble of bass (or other low-range) instruments, but I chose instead a different arrangement. The soloist is accompanied by any six instruments that can play in the soprano range (more or less that of an oboe), so that the customary relation of melody and supporting parts is turned upside down. The form is an arch, ascending and descending on either side of a central song, which is based on a short poem, "World War II," by Langston Hughes. The thinking behind this simple piece was influenced by, perhaps more than anything else, my reading of Colin Turnbull's book on Pygmy culture, The Forest People (Simon and Schuster, 1962). Without knowing a great deal about Pygmy music, I nevertheless felt strangely in tune with it, and in fact, used some heterophonic techniques, especially in the central semi-improvisatory section, that refer to the tradition. The bass trombone could be heard as the molino of Pygmy ceremony, a kind of long trumpet that is used to imitate the various voices of the forest, but above all to wake up the forest, to keep it awake, to make sure it continues its benevolent function of provider and source of life. It is usually brought out and played when something big goes wrong, or when somebody dies, and an optimistic answer to a threatening situation is needed.

CITIZEN RECOGNITION: Councilwoman Selvey recalls in November 2015, Deb Huston had a vision that no Southside Middle School student worry where their next meal might come from when not in school. With help and permission from then principal, Kelli Turner, that vision became reality. Starting out with enough food to send hbme with 4 students weekly, the pantry has blossomed into something Deb never could have imagined. Now feeding around 60 students a week, the SMS pantry is a staple at Southside. In the 5 years since its start, Deb and her volunteers have made and sent home over 30,000 backpacks of food each weekend and along break while also providing nearly 200 families with a Thanksgiving and Christmas meal each year. 6th grade teacher Rachel Miller recalled her experience working the Christmas Dinner giveaway by saying, "the families were so thankful for the help. The best part of the evening was seeing the relief on some of their faces knowing they would be able to feed their family on Christmas." In connection with the pantry, Deb and her volunteers also operate the monthly family food giveaway that has provided food for approximately 560 families this year alone.

No 8 track cartridges though) DECEMBER 2012 The Group met in the Nags Head, as before, and there was no losing battle with an amplifier this time so we got straight into the recordings people brought in. A good range of music poured forth. We started with a local band 'North Sea International' doing Parisienne Walkways, through bluegrass music, Cat Stevens, Tony Christie, Runrig, Fleetwood Mac, Lindisfarne, Eagles, to Silent Night by Mahalia Jackson. Probably the most impressive track was Luiyang River by young Chinese piano virtuoso Di Xiao who had been playing at the Royal Concert Hall a few weeks earlier. The cultural highlight? - If you've never heard Rolf Harris's version of 'Stairway to Heaven' you missed a treat. JANUARY 2013 The Music Appreciation Group continues with its mix of all and any style of music – dependent on what members bring in. We had Verdi’s Hebrew Slaves, English Folk, Rock, Cajun, Sam Cooke, Nigel Kennedy, Buena Vista Orchestra, Reggae, Gregorian Chants, Traffic, Bob Dylan, Hugh Laurie, Jimi Hendrix and others.     2017 INTERNATIONAL TROMBONE FESTIVAL: SELECTED BIOS ALGONQUIN QUARTET WEST Interpreting the music of Bartok, Coltrane, Monk, Albrechtsberger, Jelly Roll Morton, the poetry of Bukowski and others necessarily makes for a unique experience. That the concocters of such variety are four trombonists only spices up the soup. Join as they redefine chamber music and raise the roof beams. The Algonquin Quartet performs an eclectic mix of music, including Monk, Haydn, Jelly Roll Morton, Bartok, Coltrane, the poetry of Charles Bukowski, and original material. Founded in Manhattan in 1997, the Algonquin Quartet’s original members, Joe Fiedler, Conrad Herwig, Joey Sellers and Dave Taylor performed in a wide variety of venues, from concert halls to small clubs. Since relocating to Southern California, the Algonquin is now comprised of Alex Iles, Scott Whitfield, Joey Sellers and George Thatcher. SCOTT WHITFIELD is lead trombonist with Toshiko Akiyoshi’s Orchestra, works both in Los Angeles and Manhattan, and has been an Assistant Professor at Rutgers. He has performed and recorded with Nnenna Freelon, Frank Wess, and Walter Booker among others. His excellent book of transcriptions of J.J. Johnson solos is published by Hal Leonard, and a book of Steve Turre’s solos is forthcoming. Recipient of the Gil Evans Fellowship in Jazz Composition, The Sammy Nestico Award, and the Julius Hemphill Award, JOEY SELLERS writes in a wide array of styles and has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer, The American Music Center, and others. He has played and recorded with Kim Richmond Ensemble, Bill Holman Orchestra, Satoko Fujji Orchestra, Bob Mintzer Big Band, and the Kenny Wheeler Large Ensemble.
