Robyn M. Bernstein 4th grade Teacher, Kumeyaay Elementary School “Mrs. Bernstein is a true example of congruence when it comes to being a teacher. She models the behavior she wants and has a unique ability to bring out the best in all her students. She encour- ages them, empowers them, teaches them how to think crically and then challenges them. She smothers them with kindness, but challenges them to be independent. She forces them to grow, but at their own pace. She truly enforces the idea of “character development” and o en facilitates the growing pains that children of 4th grade go through by teaching about or discussing character, all while teaching students to find some resoluon to the disagreement.” – Gabriel Adona, Counselor/Professor, San Diego Mesa College Jessica M. Frichtel 9th-12th grade English Teacher, Stanley E. Foster Construcon Tech Academy, Kearny Educaonal Complex “Jessica Frichtel is a natural leader, and this talent is manifested in the myriad of projects and re- sponsibilies she has undertaken. Mrs. Frichtel has been the lead teacher in charge of the develop- ment of the 9th grade interdisciplinary team, the English Language Arts Department chair and the Ladies of CTA Club advisor. She has played a vital role in developing the project-based program at CTA. With her vision and professional experse, she has been instrumental in establishing meaning- ful relaonships with staff and industry partners to provide our students with relevant, real world experiences that bridge the world of school and the world of work. Mrs. Frichtel cares deeply about all students, is a trustworthy confidante, praiseworthy professional and incredibly effecve and car- ing teacher.” – Laura B. Bellofao, Principal, Kearny Construcon Tech Academy Jennifer Merlo 6th-8th grade English/Reading Support/P.E. Teacher, de Portola Middle School “Jennifer’s commitment to helping others succeed (even students who are not on her case load) is what sets her apart from most other teachers. She has been a commied leader at our school. Serving on our School Site Council teams, she helped to pour over data and develop plans to ad- dress concerns idenfied. Jennifer has also served on our Instruconal Leadership Team where she has been acve in helping us design staff development acvies. It’s through her help that our API scores increased from 813 last year to 839 this year. Jennifer’s teaching strength is her unyielding drive to help students. Students recognize that she’s there for them and respond to her requests because they know she’s doing it for them. They love her, as do the parents, because she does make a difference in their learning.” – Elizabeth Gillingham, Principal, de Portola Middle School Teacher of the Year at the Elementary School Level

Wooten has always followed the sage advice, “Never give up!” She shares this message with her students every day, encouraging them that they can achieve anything, regardless of limita- ons. Wooten creates a sense of “yearning to learn,” inspiring students to become excited about the world around them. She also pro- motes friendship and camaraderie among her students, allowing her class to move forward as a cohesive unit with every lesson. Walk into her first grade classroom and one can im- mediately sense her students’ respect for her and for each other. In the middle of a lesson, sing with legs criss-crossed on a large rug, Wooten even encourages her students to re- lease their pent-up energy, but in a producve and less distracng way. First graders gleefully shake their arms in unison, a move designed to express themselves and get other stu- dents excited about what they are learning. Wooten is proud of the opportunies she has been given to personally touch the lives of her students and their families. She thrives on making sure that her students are prepared for real life. She sets up pro- cesses that allow each student to feel the magic of their own personal academic success. These mo- ments are what Leppard loves most about teaching -- when understanding one of her lessons translates into a boost in her students’ self-confidence and belief that they can achieve just about anything, even if they have to work a lile harder to get there.
