The population ecology of Cosmoclopius nigroannulatus, a predatory reduvid associated with the tobacco culture was investigated aiming to study the population dynamics of adults, along the culture cycle. In an experimental plot of approximately 300 m2, in Porto Alegre (30°0’S; 51°13’W), RS, Brazil, 270 tobacco plants were grown; each plant identified by alphanumeric coor- dinates. Using the mark-release-recapture method, daily samplings were done from August to De- cember 1999, and three times a week from this date until April 2000. The adults were captured by hand, marked, sexed and released on the same plant they were captured. The individual number and plant coordinate were registered. Population estimates were analyzed by the Fisher-Ford method. In 107 sampling occasions, 604 individuals were marked, 273 males and 331 females. Three genera- tions of C. nigroannulatus were registered during the culture cycle. The colonizing generation was represented by 14 males and 15 females (a sex ratio of 0.48), the first by 109 males and 137 females (0.44) and the second by 150 males and 179 females (0.46). The estimated daily survival rate var- ied between generations decreasing from 98% in the colonizing generation to 87% in the second. The observed longevity or permanence time in the experimental area varied significantly among generations, being at about 40 days in the colonizing generation, 13 days in the first and 5 days in the second. It was observed that as the population increases, the survival and/or permanence time in the area decreases, suggesting a relation between this and a decline in the available resources probably with an associated increase in intra-specific competition. Key words: Cosmoclopius nigroannulatus, reduvids, predators, tobacco, natural enemies. Many species are phytophagous and cause injuries to plants, and can thus be defined as agricultural pests. In this study, the anatomy of the female and male reproductive tracts of three important agricultural pests in Colombia is described: Piezodorus guildinii Westwood, 1837 and Chinavia ubica Rolston 1983, found on soybeans, and Oebalus insularis Stål, 1872, found in rice crops. For that, light microscopy techniques were used. The anatomy of the reproductive tract of sexually mature males of the three species studied consisted of a pair of testes, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, ejaculatory bulb, an ejaculatory duct that opens into an aedeagus, and paired accessory glands.

Three species of Ectomocoris have 2n=23=20A+X1X2Y, while Peirates bicolor has 2n=23=20A+X1X2Y. One pair of autosomes is distinctly large in all the species of Ectomocoris, while Peirates bicolor possesses three pairs of large bivalents suggesting autosomal fusion. In Peirates bicolor with XY mechanism, X is larger than the X components of E. atrox, E. tibialis, and E. melanopterus with X1X2Y mechanism, indicating fragmentation of X to be the mode of origin of X multiplicity. In the presently studied four species, the general course of meiosis is typical of Reduviidae. Sex chromo- somes remain condensed and distantly placed during the diffuse stage. Single terminal chiasma per bivalent is seen in all except Ectomocoris atrox. At metaphase I, chromosomes arrange in a regular pattern in all the species, which is strikingly different from the typical random arrangement pattern previously reported in Reduviidae. Key words Autosome, X multiplicity, Diffuse stage, Metaphase I, Metaphase II. Peiratinae is one of the most important predaceous subfamilies of Reduviidae distributed worldwide with 32 genera and over 300 described species (Maldonado 1990). From India, 39 spe- cies belonging to nine genera have been taxonomically described in which Ectomocoris dominates with 21 species, followed by Peirates with five species.

Antenna, trichobothrium, cave organ, morphology, phylogenetic systematics, Heteroptera, Reduviidae Abstract. Sensillar structures of the antennal pedicel are investigated in Reduviidae and Pachynomidae. The cave organ, a pre sumably chemoreceptive structure, previously reported only for haematophagous Triatominae, is described here also for representa tives of Peiratinae, Reduviinae and Stenopodainae. The systematic implication of the occurrence of this sensillar structure is discussed. Further, four sclerites located in the membrane between pedicel and preflagelloid are described and used as landmarks for the recognition of individual trichobothria in Reduviidae and Pachynomidae. Characters of the trichobothrial socket are studied and discussed systematically. Homology of the distalmost trichobothrium of Reduviidae with the single trichobothrium in Pachynomidae is proposed. This hypothesis is based on the structure of the cuticle surrounding the trichobothria and on the trichobothrial position relative to the four sclerites of the pedicello-flagellar articulation. The single trichobothrium present in most nymphs corresponds to the distalmost trichobothrium in adult Reduviidae in position and structural detail. A reasonable hypotheses on the homology of indi vidual trichobothria of the proximal row or field seen in most Reduviidae can so far only be formulated for Peiratinae. Introduction Reduviidae, or assassin bugs, have more than 6.000 described species, and is one of the three most speciose families of Hemiptera (Forero 2008), and the second largest of Heteroptera, exhibiting a range of life histories (Schuh and Slater 1995, Weirauch and Schuh 2011). Species in this family are mostly predatory, although species of Triatominae are hematophagous, in which some are important vectors of Chagas disease in Latin America (Lent & Wygodzinsky 1979). Although generally polyphagous, some of the predatory groups show affinities for particular prey, such as ants in Holoptilinae (Jacobson 1911, Miller 1953, Poinar 1991), termites in Salyavata (Salyavatinae) (McMahan 1982, 1983), or millipedes in Ectrichodiinae (Miller 1953, Carpintero and Maldonado 1996). The morphological diversity exhibited by Reduviidae is also reflected in the number of subfamilies so far proposed, which ranges from 21 to 32 (Maldonado 1990, Putshkov and Putshkov 1985). Recent phylogenetic analysis of the family might help to clarify and stabilize several of the classification issues (Weirauch 2008). 9 Volumen 3 • Número 1 Marzo • 2011 Of all Reduviidae subfamilies, Classification of Harpactorinae Harpactorinae is by far the largest in terms of numbers of species described, Given its large size, it is not surprising that with more than 2.000 species described many classification schemes have been (Maldonado 1990, Putshkov and Putshkov proposed for species of this subfamily.
