The font comes in various sizes and simple words are used that are easy to read by school children. Each page contains a Horrid Henrys Wedding balance of sentences and full colour illustrations. It feels like quite a big book for Mr K and he Horrid Henrys Wedding to stop reading out loud after a couple of chapters and save the rest for the next day. In this story, it tells how Horrid Henry hates weddings. Before we read this story, Mr K already knew the plot as he had watched Horrid Henrys Wedding on television. He was forced to wear a lilac ruffled shirt, green satin knickerbockers, tights, pink cummerbund and pointy white shoes with gold buckles. So Horrid Henry decided to mess up the wedding in his Horrid Henrys Wedding horrid way. If Horrid Henrys Wedding want to know what horrid things he did, you need to read the book! It is hilarious! Once again, this is a very well written story by Francesca. This is a fun and hilarious storyline to read at bedtime. Mr K loves Horrid Henry books and reads them over and over again.     ‘New Takes on Time ’: A critical dissertation on time-distort fiction and The Serpent House , a novel for children. Barbara Henderson A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD Supervisors: Professor Kimberley Reynolds Professor Jackie Kay School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics Faculty of Arts and Humanities 2012 ABSTRACT This project consists of a reappraisal of children’s hist orical time-distort literature and a children’s novel within the genre, entitled The Serpent House , aimed at readers aged 9 -12. The submission consists therefore of a critical piece of academic research into the genre, which reflects throughout on how th e two pieces of work have informed each other. The research component of the project argues that the critical consensus, which s uggests that children’s historical literature employing time -distort elements is prone to conservatism and convention, misrepresents this body of writing. As I show from its earliest examples, it has been a genre at least as progressive as any other in children’s literature. An overview and two detailed case studies demonstrate these innovative elements. The chronological overview and the texts that make up the case studies illustrate ways in which writing of this kind has been and continues to be experimental at a variety of levels. Jane Yolen’s The Devil’s Arithmetic (1988) was chosen for its challenging content and Gary Crew’s Strange Objects (1990) for its experimental form . Analysing the primary texts and the related scholarship was part of the process by which I shaped my aspirations and creative decisions while writing The Serpent House and so the academic submission leads into a reading of my children’s novel, which forms 70 per cent of the submission.

The main corpus consists of the British translation (1954), the West German translation (1949) and the East German version (1975) of the Swedish source text (1945), which are compared with the early US translation (1950) as well as later retranslations into English (2007) and a reedition into German (2007). The project’s methodology builds on Malmkjær’s Translational Stylistics, which aims at analysing the impact of stylistic choices on processes of meaning-making in translation. The methodology is used in combination with a comparative focus on children’s literature in various cultures and on sociological frameworks to analyse the translation of Pippi Longstocking into selected target cultures. The analysis interprets the various types of changes and shifts used in the respective translations and considers both their impact on the meaning of the text and their link with literary, cultural and translational contexts and norms.
