SUN CITY HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION 2018 NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT THANK YOU FOR VOTING! Election season is upon us! SCHOA encourages everyone to participate. The right to vote is precious. There are national, state, and local races of importance to all of us. SCHOA is prohibited by law from endorsing any specific candidates, and we are diligent in staying within the law. We can, however, take positions on matters which impact our community and way of life. Prop 127 is one of those matters. SCHOA is strongly opposed to Prop 127. It is clearly not in the best interests of Sun City residents, and we encourage you to vote NO on Prop 127. I would also like to encourage you to participate in the election of 3 new Board members at SCHOA. We have 5 excellent candidates for 3 positions; 2 of the positions are full 3-year terms and the other is a balance of 1 year stemming from a resignation. Visit our web site to learn more about the candidates. Voting will be from November 5th through November 11th on line, or you may vote at our office November 5th through 9th from 9 AM to 3 PM if you prefer a paper ballot. To vote, you must be a member of SCHOA. The decisions made by and direction set by our 9-member board directly affect your property values and way of life. It is time well spent to get to know these candidates. It is also time well spent to celebrate Thanksgiving this month. This is my personal favorite holiday; it is a time to reflect upon the things for which I am thankful. We have much to be thankful for as residents of Sun City. SCHOA will continue to work diligently to keep it that way. Happy Thanksgiving! Jim Hunter, President, SCHOA Board of Directors ELECTIONS ARE TAKING PLACE ON MULTIPLE LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT AND ORGANIZATIONS The Sun City Home Owners Association (SCHOA) is strongly opposed to Proposition 127 and SCHOA urges all members to vote NO on Proposition 127. (See the Ballot wording) The “Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona” initiative seeks to amend Arizona’s State Constitution requiring that Arizona utilities obtain 50 percent of their energy from renewable resources by 2030. At current escalating speeds of innovative change, it would be irresponsible to lock out the ability to adapt, which is what the initiative would do if passed. Energy policy is best served under the charge of the Arizona Corporation Commission. At least they are able to adjust as technology and demand dictate. This is a necessary component to ensure what is in the overall best interest of our citizens. Not only is an amendment to the state constitution an irresponsible way to set energy policy, but the impacts of this particular ballot initiative would be catastrophic. When the sun is not shining, Solar doesn’t produce. That said, storage, gas fired plants and nuclear power act as ancillary supporters, to offset solar when it’s not sufficient to supply customer needs. Arizona has the largest, most efficient, carbon free and cost effective nuclear power plant in the Country. Proposition 127, if passed, would not only negate the huge advantage the Palo Verde Generating Station brings, but would initiate its deactivation prematurely, causing unwarranted costs for the company owners, which would be passed on to ratepayers. Most Sun City residents are on a fixed income and cannot afford their electricity rates doubling, as this initiative would likely do. SCHOA is deeply concerned about the effects of this initiative on our residents and the state as a whole. We urge you to reject this proposal. Hello SCHOA, If you haven’t voted early, don’t forget to vote during the general election on November 6th. No matter your affiliation it’s important we all exercise our right to vote. This month, we’re paying tribute to all of the veterans who have fought for our freedoms. THANK YOU for your service! Approximately 1,300 of our county employees have also served in a branch of the US military and many continue as reservists. We will acknowledge them during our annual Veterans Day Ceremony on November 7, at 9 a.m. outside of the Board of Supervisor’s Auditorium. You are more than welcome to attend to help us honor our veterans! As it cools off in the Valley of the Sun, you’ll be tempted to spend more time outdoors! Well, why not visit one of our Maricopa County parks? You can get outside and explore the beautiful Sonoran desert while enjoying the cooler weather, and on November 17, celebrate National Take a Hike Day with a free day-use entry to any of our regional parks. Please take advantage of this fun offer and check out the Waterfall Trail at the White Tank Regional Park. As ever, please feel free to contact me with your comments, questions, and concerns. In your service, Clint Hickman, District 4 Maricopa County Board of Supervisors 602-506-7642 or www.maricopa.gov/dist4 SCHOA’S MISSION STATEMENT “To provide for the well-being of Sun City through fair and universal compliance with the CC&Rs” Conditions, Covenants & Restrictions 2019 SCHOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION MEET THE CANDIDATES! Do YOUR Part Dear Fellow Home Owners, As a termed-out Sun City Home Owners Association Board member, I recently wrote a letter to the editor urging women residents to consider being candidates for the SCHOA Board, and other organizations’ boards, because women have skills and experience, different from men, to offer them. I want to heartily thank the two women who have stepped up to run for the SCHOA Board, Gail Warmath and Mary Riemer. These ladies, along with three gentlemen, Jerry Walczak, Al Morton and David Carlson, are the candidates in the 2018 Election to the 2019 SCHOA Board of Directors. Now it’s time to do YOUR part. No candidate can achieve office without support. IT’S TIME TO VOTE. As much as I would like to see all of these folks seated on the Board, there are only three open positions. It is up to ‘US’, the voters, to make those selections. Please consider what each candidate brings to the table. They offer their judgment and expertise, based on their years of experience as working adults; their sense of fairness and justice, based on what is right for all home owners; and their can-do spirit and collaborative energy that makes them want to accomplish things as part of a team. Please think about these things, and any others important to you, when you make your choice. But the key is TO MAKE A CHOICE!! You will be voting for three candidates for the 2019 SCHOA Board. Online voting begins November 5 at 12:01 a.m. through November 11 at 11:59 p.m. Hours to vote by paper ballot in the SCHOA office are November 5 through November 9, 9:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. (within SCHOA regular business hours). Don’t let this opportunity for your positive input pass you by. PLEASE VOTE. Your community needs to hear your voice. Thank you very much, from me and your community.
