FOREWARD The first place, if you want Scripture, the people are supposed to come to the house of God for one purpose, that is, to worship, to sing songs, and to worship God. That’s the way God expects it. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, January 3, 1954, paragraph 111. There’s something about those old-fashioned songs, the old-time hymns. I’d rather have them than all these new worldly songs put in, that is in Christian churches. HEBREWS, CHAPTER SIX, September 8, 1957, paragraph 449. I tell you, I really like singing. DOOR TO THE HEART, November 25, 1959. Oh, my! Don’t you feel good? Think, friends, this is Pentecost, worship. This is Pentecost. Let’s clap our hands and sing it.

St. Terese of Lisieux: a Taste of Heaven on Earth Abstract In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph. “Upon my death I will let fall a shower of roses; I wish to spend my heaven in doing good upon the earth.” This is the famous promise made by St Thérèse which, she fulfilled. Reading these words from my daily prayer book, this well known quotation is part of what initially intrigued me about the life of this heroic saint." Immanuel’s Land The Sands of Time Are Sinking They shall see His face. (Revelation 22:4) 1. The sands of time are sinking, 6. E’en Anwoth was not heaven— The dawn of heaven breaks, E’en preaching was not Christ; The summer morn I’ve sighed for, And in my sea-beat prison The fair, sweet morn awakes: My Lord and I held tryst: Dark, dark hath been the midnight, And aye my murkiest storm-cloud But dayspring is at hand, Was by a rainbow spann’d, And glory—glory dwelleth Caught from the glory dwelling In Immanuel’s land. In Immanuel’s land. 2. Oh! well it is forever, 7. But that He built a heaven Oh! well forevermore Of His surpassing love, My nest hung in no forest A little New Jerus’lem, Of all this death-doomed shore! Like to the one above,— Yea, let the vain world vanish, “Lord, take me o’er the water,” As from the ship the stand, Had been my loud demand, While glory—glory dwelleth “Take me to love’s own country, In Immanuel’s land. Unto Immanuel’s land.” 3. There the Red Rose of Sharon 8. But flowers need night’s cool darkness, Unfolds its heart-most bloom. The moonlight and the dew; And fills the air of Heaven So Christ, from one who loved it, With ravishing perfume; His shining oft withdrew; Oh, to behold its blossom, And then, for cause of absence, While by its fragrance fann’d My troubled soul I scann’d— Where glory—glory dwelleth But glory, shadeless, shineth In Immanuel’s land.

A CLUSTER OF PRECIOUS MEMORIES A bud the Gardener gave us, A cluster of precious memories A pure and lovely child. Sprayed with a million tears He gave it to our keeping Wishing God had spared you If only for a few more years. To cherish undefiled; You left a special memory And just as it was opening And a sorrow too great to hold, To the glory of the day, To us who loved and lost you Down came the Heavenly Father Your memory will never grow old. Thanks for the years we had, And took our bud away. Thanks for the memories we shared. We only prayed that when you left us That you knew how much we cared. 1 2 AFTERGLOW A Heart of Gold I’d like the memory of me A heart of gold stopped beating to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow Working hands at rest of smiles when life is done. God broke our hearts to prove to us I’d like to leave an echo He only takes the best whispering softly down the ways, Leaves and flowers may wither Of happy times and laughing times The golden sun may set and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve But the hearts that loved you dearly to dry before too long, Are the ones that won’t forget. And cherish those very special memories to which I belong. 4 3 ALL IS WELL A LIFE – WELL LIVED Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped away into the next room.

An Immigrant’s Heaven by Samina T. with Brigitte Nardella For publishing enquiries, please contact: 514-608-8782 [email protected] © 2014 All rights reserved. 2 An Immigrant’s Heaven “Take my picture” I asked my friend. She looked at me like I had lost my mind. And perhaps I had. Why else would I be in this hospital room? Who in their right mind would want to be photographed in this moment? My friend did not argue for fear of upsetting me, but she rummaged in her purse and tried to hand me some lipstick. I refused. I wanted to remember how I looked in this moment, just as I was. This moment, when I looked in the mirror and saw the reflection of an ugly, broken woman. It shocked me. I turned around to see if there was anybody else there, but it was just me. My friend took the picture. I hated the woman in that picture. I vowed that I would never feel this way again, that I would fight for my sanity and come out of this stronger. For myself and for my children. They had prescribed tranquilizers, but my mind was not foggy. They said: “Just go home, take the medicine, try to eat, get some sleep. That’s the best thing you can do for yourself right now.” In all the scenarios I had ever envisioned for my life, this was not anything I could have foreseen. Things were not supposed to turn out this way. When I was 5 years old, I went to my father one day to ask for some money to buy a storybook.
