Irish Authors Collections Guide 18 August 2020 English Literature is one of the two greatest strengths of the Rosenbach’s library collections (the other being American history). What we usually call English Literature is more precisely the English-language literature of Great Britain, Ireland, and surrounding islands. Some of the greatest writers in the English language have been Irish. Dr. Rosenbach certainly recognized this, and although we don't know that he had a special interest in Irish writers as such, it means that he did collect a number of them. His interest was chiefly in pre-20th-century literature, so apart from James Joyce there are few recent writers represented. Although they are not segregated by country of origin on the Rosenbach shelves, this guide highlights Irish authors as a particular sub-set of English-language authors. The guide is arranged in alphabetical order by author’s last name, and in the instances of James Joyce, Bram Stoker, and Oscar Wilde, the list is further broken down by collections category. Throughout this guide, all objects owned by Dr. Rosenbach are marked with an asterisk (*). Those marked with double (**) are part of Philip Rosenbach’s gift to the Foundation on January 12, 1953, consisting partly of objects from Dr. Rosenbach’s estate. This guide will be updated periodically to reflect new acquisitions and further cataloging of the Rosenbach collections. Objects acquired since 2014 are marked with a “+”. First edition of Algren’s rare first book which served as the genesis for A Walk on the Wild Side (1956). Signed by Algren on the title page and additionally inscribed by him at a later date (1978) on the front free endpaper: “For Christine and Robert Liska from Nelson Algren June 1978”. Algren has incorporated a drawing of a cat in his inscription. Nelson Ahlgren Abraham was born in Detroit in 1909, and later adopted a modified form of his Swedish grandfather’s name. He grew up in Chicago, and earned a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1931. In 1933, he moved to Texas to find work, and began his literary career living in a derelict gas station. A short story, “So Help Me”, was accepted by Story magazine and led to an advance of $100.00 for his first book. -

36 Copyright 2009 The Center for Christian Ethics at Baylor University Sweet Hours of Prayer BY RUTH HALEY BARTON Fixed-hour prayer anchors our daily lives in rhythms of prayer, Scripture reading, and silence, ensuring that we do not get too far into any day without reorienting our- selves to the presence of God. Praying at least some of the fixed-hours in community can shape our identity as communities of believers. he first time I participated in fixed-hour prayer, I felt like I had come home to a place that I had never been and yet a place in which I truly Tbelonged. It was a simple evening prayer service signaling the begin- ning of a spiritual retreat with a few likeminded souls. One of the members of our group had experience with fixed-hour prayer and so he prepared a simple liturgy using prayers from the Psalms, a reading from the Gospels, and written prayers from The Book of Common Prayer and The United Methodist Hymnal. We set aside a simple prayer space. We entered that space in silence. We lit a candle to signify Christ’s presence with us through the Holy Spirit. And then we prayed the prayers provided for us beginning with these words: From the rising of the sun to its setting, let the name of the Lord be praised. You, O Lord, are my Lamp. My God, you make my darkness bright. Light and peace in Jesus Christ our Lord. Thanks be to God. Some of the prayers were read in unison, some were read responsive- ly—and I just lost myself in the beauty and simplicity of it all. -

There is a light splash stain, measuring 3 x 1", to the top edge of the text block of volume 1. Pp. 130-133 of volume 1 have minor underlining. A couple of the boards have shallow dings in the edges. In the illustrated dust jackets with mild edge wear, slight toning, and periodic small stains, including several burn stains. The dust jacket of volume 1 is a bit chipped at the edges. [54118] $750 An attractively produced collected edition in uniform format of all of Blake's Illuminated Books. These Illuminated Books reflect the heart of the British Romantic's artistic essence, exquisitely blending his masterworks of art and text. Blake had hoped that the Books would would be widely circulated, but this did not happen, with some existing solely as unique copies, or if printed, only in very small numbers. The scarcity of the Illuminated books was noted early on and numerous attempts were made to reproduce them. The most complete and faithful of these reproductions was produced by Trianon Press for the William Blake Trust. -

INTRODUCTION: Vellum is arguably one of the most beautiful binding materials in use, and at the same time one of the least used in modern design bindings. While it is often used in limp bindings, its use “over hard boards” has been much more limited. A study of the bookbinding literature reveals it being covered in-depth to a larger degree in German language trade manuals than in English. This could explain their seemingly greater popularity in Germany, as evidenced by reproductions in exhibition catalogs and other publications. With a decline in traditional training opportunities, it is becoming increasing difficult to find exposure to this technique. As a material, vellum has many wonderful characteristics. It is translucent, can be made transparent, is available dyed or veiney, and exceedingly well wearing. Its major drawback is its hygroscopic nature, causing it to stretch as it absorbs water and to shrink as it dries. In dry conditions this will cause the boards to warp strongly. This, perhaps more than anything else, has discouraged binders from working with this wonderful material. The structure described in this article is designed to address this problem of warping, and hopefully lead to an increase in the numbers of binders working in vellum. By applying the “split board” technique I learned as an apprentice in Germany, and described in Wiese, one reduces the pull of the vellum on the boards, making it much easier to control with the counter-linings applied to the inside of the case. -

Tangible display systems: bringing virtual surfaces into the real world James A. Ferwerda Munsell Color Science Laboratory, Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science, Rochester Institute of Technology ABSTRACT We are developing tangible display systems that enable natural interaction with virtual surfaces. Tangible display systems are based on modern mobile devices that incorporate electronic image displays, graphics hardware, tracking systems, and digital cameras. Custom software allows the orientation of a device and the position of the observer to be tracked in real-time. Using this information, realistic images of surfaces with complex textures and material properties illuminated by environment-mapped lighting, can be rendered to the screen at interactive rates. Tilting or moving in front of the device produces realistic changes in surface lighting and material appearance. In this way, tangible displays allow virtual surfaces to be observed and manipulated as naturally as real ones, with the added benefit that surface geometry and material properties can be modified in real-time. We demonstrate the utility of tangible display systems in four application areas: material appearance research; computer-aided appearance design; enhanced access to digital library and museum collections; and new tools for digital artists. INTRODUCTION When observers interact with objects they typically engage in a complex set of behaviors that include active manipulation and dynamic viewing. These behaviors allow observers to experience how objects look from different viewpoints and under different lighting conditions, which provides rich visual information about object shape and material properties. Modern computer graphics systems have the ability to render both static and dynamic images of objects with high fidelity, but the ability to interact with these objects is typically indirect, through trackballs, mice and similar devices. -

Version 8, Updated July 7, 2011 WAM WESTERN MSS DIGITIZATION PROJECT CATALOGUING GUIDELINES AND STANDARDS The purpose of the following guidelines is to insure consistency in the entry of cataloguing data and descriptions, including data type, format, and terminology. Consistency here means regularity, predictability, uniformity, and “searchability.” Whether a manuscript specialist or an interested non-specialist, the user of the WAM digitized catalogue should expect to find the same amount and type of data in each entry field, and in the same general order. Consistency in all fields is particularly important for manuscripts of the same title: Bible, Gospels, Missal, Lectionary, Book of Hours, etc. GENERAL GUIDELINES: Format The Abstract field is the only entry field to be composed in full sentences (subject, verb, object) and with verbs in the present tense. All other fields should be in phrases or fragments, except where the meaning becomes confusing and difficult to express without a subject, verb and object. The Decoration comment and Label fields may be a regular exception to this general format rule. Capitalization, Spacing, Punctuation Capitalize the beginning of all entries in all fields. Avoid using unnecessary abbreviations in entries. Single space (not double) between sentences. Punctuation follows American usage and goes inside quotation marks: “... Gothic.” Period at end of full sentences only, not phrases or fragments (as here) Avoid unnecessary use of colons in entries. Avoid using quotation marks in the Descriptive Note -
