AWARDS Miharo: The Miharo is a daily award chosen by the children for the child who is an outstanding role model during the day in the areas of achievement, courtesy, cooperation, collaboration, respect, responsibility and fair play. The recipients of this award for the second week of Term One are Ben Brailey-Batt, Rose Brailey-Batt and Khloe Smith Kia ora whanau Just a short newsletter this week. I trust you all took some moments yesterday to contemplate the meaning and reason for our holiday as they apply to yourself and to the people of Aotearoa . We have been having a discussion and doing some brief fact finding around the day with those children who have been at school. I am going to make more mention of absenteeism and the impact it has on children’s learning, as the year progresses. The level of absenteeism is a rising concern in our schools with attendance rates continuing to decline across all schools. This week I would like to congratulate three children who have 100% attendance for the year to date – well done Ben, Rose and Khloe. A reminder that if your children are not going to be at school for any reason we require a reason for the absence – if no reason/explanation is supplied then legally, we must record your child as truant. We have been slowly settling into new routines and old over the first week of school and are working our way through some assessments in literacy and numeracy to identify those aspects of learning from last year that have been embedded securely and those that require revisiting. At this point it is clear that the long holiday break has impacted on children’s maths, especially basic facts knowledge and, for some, their spelling and reading. Please support and encourage your children to practise a few basic facts and spelling words each day as well as some reading. One area where children have shown the benefit of practise over the holidays is swimming. All children are confident in the water and making progress with their goals that they have set. We have made a short video of each child swimming so they can see what they need to work on next. SCHOOL BUS: The bus is running to Springs Junction to pick up first in the mornings and first afternoon drop offs. Approximate bus times are: Leaving Springs Junction at 7.50am. arriving at school at approximately 8:15am. The Frog Flat run is State Highway 65 only and departs from Frog Flat at approximately 8:30 am. The afternoon run goes to Springs Junction first leaving school at 3.00pm and arriving at Springs Junction at approximately 3:30 – 3:35 pm. The afternoon Frog Flat run leaves school at approximately 3:50 pm. WEETBIX TRYATHLON Last year a number of children had a great Sunday morning in Nelson taking part in the Weetbix Tryathlon. This year we are keen to get all eligible children to this day – we are trying for the prize of having the highest percentage of children at the event as well as getting everyone involved in a fun activity. The event is for children from 7 – 15 years. This year the event is on Sunday 3 March at Tahunanui. I have set up a Maruia School group registration facility and all you have to do is follow this link to complete registration – we already have one registered – well done Rachel: https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?E=31843&G=79772

The agreement was that you would sell the calves then donate the proceeds of those pledges to the PTA. Please use the PTA bank account number above for your pledges. Thank you so much for your support. DOC VOLUNTEERS: DOC are still looking for a volunteer to put up some wasp bait stations in the bush area around and behind the school. They will provide the materials and then will come and bait them. If you think you are able to help with this please let me know ASAP and I will pass on your details to DOC. The wasp activity around school is beginning to increase.

For those of you interested in weather data the children have begun their record keeping for the year and last week’s maximum temperature at school was 36.2.

Enjoy the cooler weather this week.
