Introduction Welcome to the second updated edition of the Leagues Statistical history.

The first time the League published its history in a single format was in June 2007. The 2015-2016 season marked the Leagues final season before our joining with the Watford Sunday League from next Season. It was felt that it was important to re-publish an updated and final version of the Leagues history.

My passion for the Leagues history actually started at the end of my first season of involvement in the League in 2001-02. The team that I managed Acorn Raiders finished bottom of the Second Division losing every game. It was published in the Watford Observer that we were the first team ever to lose every game in a season. I couldn’t believe it so asked a League committee member at the time if this was true and was met with this reply “I didn’t know so I guessed, it sounded good anyway”.

As you will see from the records published here my team was actually the fifth team to lose every game and one since has achieved that feat as well. From that point on it was important to me that the League should get its history correct. Three months after the publication of the first book I started writing the weekly report for the Watford Observer (previous to that clubs reports had been sent to a League Committee member who then just forwarded them to the paper unedited) I felt it very important to get the facts in the reports correct and having a full history of the League was vital in that, although it didn’t stop some clubs saying things that were frankly untrue with several teams over the years attempting to claim to be the “best” team in the Leagues history.

You will find a full roll of honour in this book, but it is frankly impossible to say if one team or another is the best the League has produced because simply football has changed in the forty four years of the Leagues existence.

One other thing I have been asked many times is what the biggest win in the Leagues history, the answer is I frankly don’t know. No full season by season results exist from before the 2008-09 season.

Above all else this book should be seen as a tribute to all those Club Secretaries, players, managers and League officers past and present who have given their time to Sunday football in this League over the last forty four years. Mark Bunn

Notes

This booklet contains all the available League tables from the first season, along with the results of all the Cup Finals. Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 2007, the vast majority of the missing tables prior to 1978-79 and those two seasons have now been found thanks to the Evening Echo which did record the League’s early results. The only tables that have been lost forev- er are from the 1973-74 season and the two of the three divisions from 1976-77 season. An area that has caused confusion, is that over time, some Club names have been ab- breviated to the extent that League tables, Cup Winners, trophies and shields, and even league handbooks have not matched. In these cases the Club names have been standard- ised to keep them consistent

Below are notes on the League and Cup competitions

PREMIER DIVISION Originally called Division One, but renamed for the start of the 1979-80 season. DIVISION ONE The only division that has been played for in every season. DIVISION TWO Started in 1973-74 season and ended at the end of the 2012-13 season DIVISION THREE Introduced for the 1975-76 season but was dropped at the end of the 1976-77 season, before being re-introduced in 1978 until the end 1993-94 season. Made a one season comeback in the 2008-09 season DIVISION FOUR Introduced in 1983 and lasted for four seasons. AWARDING OF POINTS. It was not until the 1996-97 season that the revised system of awarding three points for a win was introduced. CHALLENGE CUP The League’s longest running cup competition has been played for in every season. PRESIDENT’S CUP The League’s second longest running competition. First played for in the 1975-76 season and was for all teams outside the top division. The format was changed in 1980-81 so that only teams from outside the top two divisions could enter. The format was changed again in 2002-03 so that only Premier Division teams could compete. CHAIRMAN’S CUP Started in the 1980-81 season and was originally played for by teams in the League’s top two divisions the format was changed in 2202-03 so that only Division One teams could compete. KEN SIMMONS MEMORIAL CUP Originally called the Challenge Plate and was introduced in 1979-80 season for teams that had been knocked out in the first round of the Challenge cup. In 1984 it was re-named the T&F Motors Challenge Shield and then in 1991 it was renamed The Ken Simmons Me- morial Cup in memory of the League treasurer who sadly passed away during the previous season. The format was changed in 2002-03 so that only Division Two sides could compete. With the ending of Division Two at the end of the 2012-13 It was changed back to its old format for one season in the 2013-14.That was the last season it was played for LEAGUE INVITATION CUP The league did play for in a odd season, an invitation cup but no records of these finals was actually recorded by the League and so are not recorded in this book.

37 The Challenge Cup

The Challenge Cup is the league’s longest-running Cup competition. It has been competed for in every season of the League’s forty-four year existence. Between 1974 and 1979,Michaelians FC and Bull & Tiger FC dominated the competition, with either one of these two clubs appearing in the Final., with the Bull & Tiger holding the joint record of appearing in four consecutive finals, which was later matched by Moss Mo- tors FC and Headstone Athletic FC. Michealians FC appeared in four finals, winning two of them, Bull & Tigers two wins came with victories over Michaelians in 1977 and again in 1979, having first reached the final in 1976 in what was the first all non top division final, losing 4-2 to fellow Second Divi- sion club, Crown Villa Reserves. In the eleven seasons between 1981 and 1992,the Cup was won eight times by clubs outside the top flight. Stanborough Vale FC appeared in three finals in five years, winning only once, in 1986,they appeared again the next season, but were unable to retain the cup, as Woodcock FC denied them a League & Cup “Double” in the competition’s first-ever penalty shoot-out. The 1991 Final saw one of the greatest shocks, the Trophy’s history, when third division runners-up, Oakwood FC defeated Premier Division Champions, Ushers Bakeries FC,2-1. The mid-1990’s saw the cup dominated by Moss Motors FC who won it four times, although all their victories came against clubs from outside the top division. In 1996 the Cup became sponsored by “Birkdale Trophies” . A year later Riverside Athlet- ic FC reached the first of their five final appearances, between 1998 and 2003,however they only managed a single victory, which came over Reed Rangers via a 4-3 triumph in 1999. Oddly enough, their four defeats came at the hands of lower division opponents. The early years of the new millennium saw the departure of three clubs that had dominated the competition over the previous few seasons, these being, Riverside Athletic FC, Garston Gunners FC and Green Dragon FC, the latter two clubs making their only final appearance in 2004,in which Garston Gunners FC won 2-0 in what proved to the last final to played at Woodside Stadium, which was the home of the Final for the previous fifteen years. The move away from Woodside to Kings Langley FC gave a more professional ap- proach to the Cup Final day organisation, which helped to boost attendances.

The first final at the new venue in 2005 saw Nascotwood Rangers Royals FC beat Watford Railway Club FC 2-0 in front of a crowd 180,which easily beat the disappointing crowds that had turned up at last few Woodside-held finals, indeed in 2003 only nine spectators watched the game between Inter Championship Manager FC and Riverside Athletic FC. In 2006, a bumper crowd of 250 viewed one of the best Finals ever, as Premier Division Champions, Woodcock FC and First Division one club, AFC Rangers fought out a 3-3 draw, before the underdogs, won a dramatic penalty shoot-out 3-1. In 2007 Headstone Athletic FC defeated Gadeside Rangers FC to completed a league & Cup “Double”. And the following season, Gadeside repeated the feat with a 2-1 victory over AFC Rangers. They retained the cup in 2009 with a 6-1 win over Leavesden Green FC. The 2010 final saw Division two club, Radlett Road FC score a 2-0 upset win over Prem- ier Division, Colne Valley FC. 2011 and 2012,Headstone Athletic FC scored back to back victories beating Cassiobury Rangers FC and Everett Rovers FC by the same 2-1 scoreline. However in 2013 they failed in their quest to record a hat-trick of wins, and four overall (which would have tied them with Moss Motors FC record ), when they were surprisingly beaten 1-0 by Cassiobury Rangers FC. The following season Headstone were again runners up, this time they were beaten 2-1 by Tudor Arms FC. In 2015 AFC Bovingdon defeated Bushey Grove FC by a single goal, which was only the third time that a solitary goal had decided the Final. 39 The President’s Cup

The Presidents Cup is the League’s second longest running competition having been introduced for the 1075 / 76 season and was originally restricted to the teams outside the top division. The first final saw Bull & Tiger beat their own reserve team 2-1,and they reached the final again two years later losing this time to Falcon FC . The biggest win in the Final came in 1980 when Crown beat SOPA 7-0. At the start of the 1980/81 season, the competition was limited to sides outside the top two divisions.

In the first final under the new format, The Cross and Red Lion Aldenham shared eleven goals – a record for any OSFL Final. A year later, Red lion bounced back from the previous seasons defeat with a 1-0 win over Crusaders Goodwill. Pavilion won the Cup in successive seasons in 1984 and 1985. The 1991 Final was not played as Ocusta’s opponents, Golden Old Boys were unable to field a team and the trophy was awarded to Ocusta by default. In 1994, Watford Irish Centre became the last winners in that format. There was no competition in 1994/95 season, however it did return for a season a year later as an extra competition for the Premier Division teams to give them more games due to a reduced top flight.

Black Cherry’s 2-0 win over arch rivals Moss Motors in 1995/96 meant that they became the first club to win all of the League’s four Cup Competitions. After a gap of five seasons, the competition returned as the Premier Division League Cup. Garston Gunners’ victory in 2000/01 was the first of three straight wins, which was to become a league record. They also matched Black Cherry in be- coming only the second side to win all four cup competitions before leaving the league in 2004. AFC Rangers became the third side to achieve the same feat with a 3-2 win over Colne Valley in 2008. Headstone Athletic reached three consecutive finals in 2009, 10 & 11, only to lose each time. They were beaten by Old Danes in 2009, and to MK Ginder in both 2010 & 2011.

The 2011/12 Final was delayed until the end of September 2012 due to a dispute over the semi-final between Kings Langley and Inter FC , and when the final was finally played at Croxley Guild, Tudor Arms beat Kings Langley 5-2. Tudor held the President’s Cup for only six months when they again reached the final in 2013 where they faced Headstone Athletic who were playing in their fourth final in five seasons, and they finally won the trophy with a 2-1 victory. Headstone returned to final once again in 2014 and regained the Cup with a 4-0 win over Old Danes Athlet- ic. It was Old Danes Athletic who won again in 2015 beating Hertfordshire Lions 4-3 on penalties, after the game had ended in thrilling 3-3 draw after extra time. And they became the last holders this season with a narrow 2-1 win over Oxhey Hall Stars.

The Chairman’s Cup Started in the1980 / 81 season and was, at first , just for clubs in the League’s top two divisions. Black Lion won the trophy for the first two seasons. Threeways played in their first final in 1984, losing 2-1 to Watford Golf Range, but they would return twice more, winning in 1988 and 1989. By the start of the 1990’s two sides were dominating the league, Moss Motors and Black Cherry, Motors appeared in three finals, winning only once. Arch rivals, Cher- ry beat them 2-0 in 1992 and a year later they defeated Genesis Athletic 3-1. In their third final ended in defeat in the competition’s first penalty shoot-out . St. Georges the Division One Champions inflicted Motors only defeat of the entire season,6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

With the league reducing to three divisions at the start of the 1994/95 season, the competition was limited to sides outside the Premier Division, and Leavesden Hos- pital, who later became Abbots Langley Mens Club, won their first cup in that season with a 1-0 win over Division One Champions, Beaver Athletic. It was to be the first of two victories, and the first of three appearances in the final. A year later, Division Two side, Northwood Hills, defeated Division One side Man- or Park. The following season, the competition reverted back to its original format, with only sides in the top two divisions taking part. In that year’s final Leavesden Green defeated Leavseden Hospital 5-2 to win a League and Cup Double, as they also clinched the Premier Division.

In 1998/99 the format was changed again, back to the clubs outside the top two divisions. In 2002/03 it became the Division One League Cup. In 2003/04 , Leaves- den Green won the final for a second time, by defeating April Six Athletic 4-2. Twelve months later ,the final had moved to Kings Langley FC for the first time, with April Six Athletic once again making an appearance. This time they were defeated 2 -0 to Division One Champions, Woodside, in front of a crowd of 300. Athletic’s defeat meant that they joined The Cross as the only two sides to reach two finals and lose them both.

AFC Rangers won the competition in 2006, but lost to Cassiobury Rangers a year later, going down 1-0. The 2008 final saw MK Ginder beat Bovingdon in extra time and Croxley Royal British Legion winning in 2009, before resigning from the League. Everett Rovers completed a League and Cup double in 2010 with a 4-1 win over Riverside Athletic . A year later Radlett Road defeated Tudor Arms 2-1. Three of the last five finals have been rather one sided affairs, with Rovers beating Rickmansworth Athletic 4-1 in 2012, Amici beating Headstone Lions 6-1 a year later. Hertfordshire Lions beating Cassiobury Revolution 5-1, although the 2014/15 final saw a much closer affair when WD Athletic defeated Watford Labour Club 2-1. This season’s ( the last ever ), saw South Oxhey Labour Club Reserves narrowly defeat Roundbush 3-2.

The Ken Simmons Memorial Cup was originally called the Challenge Plate and was first played for in the 1979/80 season by sides that had been defeated in the first round of the Challenge Cup. The first final saw Leggatts Youth defeat Michaelians 6-0. Rider Sports won the trophy in 1981 and 1982. The year they defeated Orbital Sports 2-1 in a replay after the first game had ended in a 3-3 draw. In 1984, Pavilion claimed the trophy along with the Presidents cup and the Fourth Division title. The following season was re-named the T & F Motors Challenge Shield and the first winners were Microgen who also won the Division One Title. In 1988, Watford Golf Range won the final, having lost out to Pavilion two years earlier. A year later saw the first penalty shoot-out in the final, as second division, Audio Kenetics defeat Division One champions, Kendal Albion 6-5,after the game had ended all-square at 2-2. The 1989 final saw Cannon Reserves from Division Two beat their own first team from the Premier Division 5-0. At the start of the 1991/92 season, the competition was re-named the Ken Sim- mons Memorial Cup, in honour of the League Treasurer, who had sadly passed away during the previous season . The 1994 final saw a shock result when Division One club Beaver Athletic beat Premier Division side, Red Lion 2-1. At the turn of the century, Garston Gunners won the cup twice. In 2002, it was decided to bring a fresh edge to all the Cup Competition’s, with each division having its own, and the Ken Simmons Memorial became the cup for Division Two. Under the new format, the first winners were Woodside, who denied the Railway Arms a League and Cup double with a 2-0 win after extra-time. A year later Wood- side were back in the final, as they retained the cup against LS Sports via a penalty shoot out. Two season’s later Woodside’s reserves won the cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over MK Ginder. In between those Woodside wins, AFC Rangers defeated Oxhey Estates 3-1 to steal a Division Two League & Cup double. In 2007 and 2008 both Riverside AFC Seniors and Croxley Royal British Legion repeated AFC Rangers league and cup double by defeating Colne Valley Blues and Eastfield United respectively. The 2009 Final saw a new name on the trophy, as FC Sherman, who also se- cured a league & cup double with victory over Watford Labour Club. The 2010 final saw MK Ginder Reserves beat FC Swan 3-1, and a year later they returned to retain the Cup with a 3-1 victory over Everett Rovers Reserves. In 2012 saw two new finalists, in Brookside and Old Danes Athletic, with Old Danes completing a league and cup double, in what was the their first season with 4 -1 win. The 2013 saw Oxhey Park defeat Bovingdon AFC 3-1 in front of a crowd of 205. With the league having to return to just two divisions, it was decided to return it to its original format with sides taking part coming from sides who had lost in the early rounds of the Challenge Cup. And, in what proved to be the last ever final, Old Danes Athletic defeated Kings Langley 9-8 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out after the match had ended in a 1-1 draw.
