Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work.

  • May Maritime Alps
Maritime Alps Spring in Mercantour A Greentours Tour Report 16th to 23rd May 2014 Led by Paul Cardy Daily Accounts and Systematic Lists written by Paul Cardy Our fifth spring tour to the Maritime Alps was superbly productive, especially botanically, and very enjoyable, with almost unbroken perfect weather. Last year had been a late spring in the region, with snow laying much lower than is usual, and some sites inaccessible, but this year the flora was even a little advanced, with several species being recorded for the first time. For the first four nights we were based at a small pleasant family-run hotel in the Valdeblore hamlet of La Bolline, a fine location, well situated for all excursions, and with a small grocery and a bakery just along the street where I could do the daily picnic shopping whilst the group enjoyed breakfast in the hotel. Dinners at the restaurants in the village, in nearby Rimplas, and in St.Dalmas were very good. For the last three nights we moved to the other side of Mercantour National Park, and the hamlet of Casterino, which allowed easy access into the Italian Alpi Marittime, a superbly productive area. On the arrival day, having arrived the previous evening from my home in Italy, a few valleys to the north, at Nice airport I soon met most of the group, and before long we were en route north through ever more impressive scenery. Bob and Marlene were arriving on an afternoon flight, and we met up with them that evening in the hotel.

Morocco lies on the border of and constitutes a contact zone typical flora; therefore, the entomological fauna inhabiting the between the Palearctic (Southern Mediterranean) and Ethiopian areas of these two formations is also very rich. The rocks of the zoogeographic regions. I visited Morocco twice, in June 1982 "Massif Moulay-Brahim" are characterized as Lower Carbonifer- and in May 1987, to collect and photograph butterflies in the ous sediments and the composition of the area at Asni as Permian areas of Ifrane in the Middle Atlas (Moyen Atlas), in Marrakech, and Triassic. Of course, the composition of the High Atlas, to and also in the High Atlas itself at several locations, including the south from the just described areas, is very complicated, and Asni and the gorges of Moulay Brahim in the High Atlas encompasses the oldest rocks of Precambrian basements followed, piedmont.

Catania/Zafferana – Cloudy and dull with some rain. Three tour group members, Edna, Barbara and Pauline, met Paul at the check-in at Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal. Aase and Edith joined the group at departure gate 104 for British Airways flight BA2594 to Catania, Sicily. Upon our arrival, we soon cleared passport control, customs and baggage reclaim, before collecting our minibus. Leaving Catania Airport, we joined the link road west to where we transferred onto the north bound A18 to Giarre. Here we left the motorway and took the road north to Zafferana Etnea and the Hotel Abergo Airone, our base for the next four nights. After settling into our rooms, we met for drinks prior to dinner, and Paul outlined the structure of the coming week, before we went into the restaurant for our evening meal. Day 2 Sunday 30th April Weather: Bright and sunny at first, becoming cloudy and wet after lunch. After a leisurely breakfast, we made our way down towards Zafferana, and on to the road to Milo. Unfortunately, cloud obscured the volcano, so we did not stop for pictures.

Much of our current under- standing is based primarily on detailed morphological observations made 50–70 years ago. However, the family and its putative four subfamilies and two tribes, have rarely been subjected to rigorous phylogenetic analysis. Here we present results based on an analysis of molecular characters used to reconstruct the phylogeny of the Pieridae in order to infer higher-level classification above the generic level and patterns of historical biogeography. Our sample contained 90 taxa representing 74 genera and six subgenera, or 89% of all genera recognized in the family. Three complementary approaches were

Lepidoptera, butterflies, Gibraltar, migration, phenology, species composition Abstract. In order to understand patterns of abundances of migratory Lepidoptera in southernmost Europe and contrast this with those of sedentary species, we studied butterflies surveyed along transects during three spring migration seasons at the Rock of Gibraltar. Overall, 2508 butterflies belonging to 19 species were recorded. Of these, the four most numerous species accounted for almost 88% of all individuals recorded. These were the migratory Clouded Yellow Colias croceus, Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta and Painted Lady Vanessa cardui, and the sedentary Common Blue Polyommatus icarus. There was a significant correlation between abundance of P. icarus and C. croceus. Furthermore, abundances of C.

On 2nd April we took off from Zaventem airport for what turned out to be a most interesting and rewarding visit to Morocco. We landed in Agadir at about noon where a most discouraging looking Renault 4 was waiting to take us into town. We deposited our luggage in the hotel «Les Cinq parties du Monde» and, not having time for lunch, immediately drove to the north to Imouzzèr-Ges with its famous Cascades. In the sunny afternoon, about 20°C, we netted our first Moroccan butterflies which were flying over small fields. The most interesting species were Tomares mauretanicus Lucas and Cigaritis allardi Oberthür, both flying in low numbers and occasionally setting down on stones or rocks in the sunshine. The next morning we ventured on a raid some 1 50 km to the south where we hoped to find Melitaea deserticola Oberthür and Euchloe fallow' Allard.

  • Revised Systematics and Higher Classification of Pierid Butterflies
Zoologica Scripta Revised systematics and higher classification of pierid butterflies (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) based on molecular data NIKLAS WAHLBERG,JADRANKA ROTA,MICHAEL F. BRABY,NAOMI E. PIERCE & CHRISTOPHER W. WHEAT Submitted: 5 May 2014 Wahlberg, N., Rota, J., Braby, M.F., Pierce, N.E. & Wheat, C.W. (2014). Revised Accepted: 12 July 2014 systematics and higher classification of pierid butterflies (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) based on doi:10.1111/zsc.12075 molecular data. — Zoologica Scripta, 43, 641–650. The butterfly family Pieridae comprises approximately 1000 described species placed in 85 genera, but the higher classification has not yet been settled. We used molecular data from eight gene regions (one mitochondrial and seven nuclear protein-coding genes) com- prising a total of ~6700 bp from 96 taxa to infer a well-supported phylogenetic hypothesis for the family. Based on this hypothesis, we revise the higher classification for all pierid genera. We resurrect the tribe Teracolini stat. rev. in the subfamily Pierinae to include the genera Teracolus, Pinacopteryx, Gideona, Ixias, Eronia, Colotis and most likely Calopieris. We transfer Hebomoia to the tribe Anthocharidini and assign the previously unplaced gen- era Belenois and Dixeia to the subtribe Aporiina. Three lineages near the base of Pierinae (Leptosia, Elodina and Nepheronia + Pareronia) remain unplaced. For each of these, we describe and delineate new tribes: Elodinini Braby tribus nova, Leptosiaini Braby tribus nova and Nepheroniini Braby tribus nova. The proposed higher classification is based on well-supported monophyletic groups and is likely to remain stable even with the addition of more data. • A Catalogue of Butterflies (Lepidoptera, Rhopalocera) of Azerbaijan
Acta Biologica Sibirica, 2019, 5(3), 62-117, doi: https://doi.org/10.14258/abs.v5.i3.6433 RESEARCH ARTICLE A catalogue of butterflies (Lepidoptera, Rhopalocera) of Azerbaijan N.Y. Snegovaya, V.A. Petrov Zoological Institute National Academy of Science of Azerbaijan A. Abbaszade St. 1128, Baky, Azerbaijan, E-mail: [email protected] National Museum of Georgia Rustaveli Ave. 3, Tbilisi, Georgia, E-mail: [email protected] An annotated list of butterflies from Azerbaijan, containing 280 species, is presented. The classification and nomenclature in this work are accepted according to the key of Korb & Bolshakov (2016). The full list of species composition of butterflies of Azerbaijan numbering 280 species for today is presented for the first time, and it was supplemented by new materials collected by the first author from 2012 to 2019. We came up with the list of the total species composition of butterflies in Azerbaijan, which currently includes 280 species from 6 families (Hesperiidae - 37, Papilionidae - 10, Pieridae - 28, Lycaenidae - 100, Riodinidae - 1, Nimphalidae - 104) for today was compiled. We record Papilio demoleus demoleus Linnaeus, 1758 as a new species for the fauna of the Caucasus. Our results will help to continue biodiversity study and expand the information on the distribution of the butterflies (Papilionoformes) in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. Key words: butterflies; Azerbaijan; catalogue; Lepidoptera Rhopalocera or butterflies are one of the popular groups of insects, which are an important component of terrestrial biocenoses. The fauna of Lepidoptera of Azerbaijan has attracted the attention of lepidopterists for a long time. The first butterfly researcher in Azerbaijan was E.Menetries (Menetries, 1832, 1855, 1859).

Wild Flowers of Sicily Naturetrek Tour Report 4 - 11 May 2016 Etna Daisy by Jessica Turner Hand-warming on Mt Etna! by Andrew St. John Mount Etna by Diane Gee Scabiosa cretica by Heather St. John Report compiled by Jessica Turner Images by Heather & Andrew St John, Diane Gee and Jessica Turner Naturetrek Mingledown Barn Wolf's Lane Chawton Alton Hampshire GU34 3HJ UK T: +44 (0)1962 733051 E: [email protected] W: www.naturetrek.co.uk Tour Report Wild Flowers of Sicily Tour Participants: Jessica Turner (leader) with eight Naturetrek clients Summary As ever, our Naturetrek appreciation of the Wild Flowers of Sicily did not fail to delight. Mount Etna dominates the eastern end of the island, and we explored the range of plants, including many of the endemics, from the first colonisers of the destructive black larva to those which grow in the fertile soils by the sea. The white limestone of the Madonie Mountains provided a great contrast and a very different collection of plant species. We saw a great range of orchids, especially in the Bosco della Ficuzza, where we found the very localised Pale Ophrys (Ophrys fusca subsp. pallida), which is mainly confined to this area. There was a good supporting cast of other wildlife, too, including amazing views of a Western Green Lizard and a Four-lined Snake. Delightful hotels, delicious food and excellent company all contributed to a very successful trip. Day 1 Wednesday 4th May Gatwick to Catania; Sant’Alfio Eight group members met Jessica at Gatwick Airport for our 11.45am flight to Catania.
