The chords and keys to all of this music is in the key that I sang it on the CD, but at the end of this book I have included my “Karen Drucker Handy Dandy Easy Music Method,” which will help you transpose the key to a key that works for you, help you figure out the chords, and maybe a few other tidbits you didn’t know. As you will see I have written quite a lot of these songs and chants with other New Thought artists. I would encourage you to check out their websites and find more wonderful music from each of them! 1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour. -

THE PARTON PARADOX: A HISTORY OF RACE AND GENDER IN THE CAREER OF DOLLY PARTON by LINDSEY HAMMERS (Under the Direction of Christina Abreu) ABSTRACT With a career that has spanned over five decades, country music artist Dolly Parton has continually redefined her image and her music to remain relevant. By incorporating the musical and lyrical stylings of disco and other popular music genres into her songs, Parton moved beyond music’s color line to increase her popularity as an artist. This thesis shows how Parton established a distinct career that catered to different audiences as she traversed the musical color line and repackaged what feminism looked like to country music fans during the Women’s Movement of the 1960s. -
Boccaccio's Corbaccio As a Secret Admirer
Heliotropia 7.1-2 (2010) http://www.heliotropia.org Boccaccio’s Corbaccio as a Secret Admirer rom my first reading of the Corbaccio, I have thought it was an in- side joke. This visceral reaction has inflected my reading both of the F treatise and of the scholarly writing dedicated to it. Ideally, of course, the lines of influence should run dynamically in both directions: my opinion of the Corbaccio should be formed and informed by a careful reading of scholarship on the “umile trattato”1; my reading of the scholar- ship should be checked against my ongoing reading of the treatise. In- stead, my immediate reaction left no room for that ideal equilibrium. My overwhelming impression was and remains not only that the Corbaccio is intended to be irresistibly funny, but also that it is a joke not on women, but rather on misogyny, and on the nexus of pseudo-intellectualism and masculine privilege that orients misogynous discourse in Boccaccio’s time and in the centuries preceding. More than targeting women, the treatise mocks the traps of carnal desire; the self-deception that disguises lust as love; and the seductive but destructive lure of self-righteous superiority, a lure particularly destructive for an intellectual. So my opening statement acknowledges a hard epistemological fact that underpins (and may, for some, undermine) what follows: I have a longstanding and pre-analytical predisposition to take the Corbaccio as — to resort to its own register — a mighty, a monumental, piss-take. I have had excellent company, with Jean-Pierre Barricelli, Anthony Cassell, Per Nykrog, and Robert Hollander, to name just the first few crit- ics to offer such a reading in print. -
