- 1 - Conference on 17th

At the FAO 60th anniversary, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Protection in collaboration with the agricultural journalists association organized a conference on Oct 17th at the National Historical Museum. The deputy minister, representives of the FAO projects, research institutions and farmers' associations took part in the event. All the discussions stressed on the important role played by FAO in Albania's development.

ARMENIA

Ceremony on the occasion of World Food Day (WFD) 14th October

A ceremony was held on the occasion of 25th Anniversary of the World Food Day in the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of . About 60 people (from the Ministry of Agriculture, non-governmental organizations, Armenian State Agriculture University, donor community and international organizations, mass media, etc.) were participating to the event.

Mr. Davit Lokyan, Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia, opened the World Food Day ceremony. The Minister thanked to all farmers and NGOs, international and donor organization for their significant support to the development of agriculture in Armenia.

Ms Kadlecikova (FAO Representative-Sub-regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe) addressed all participants and spoke about the "Agriculture and intercultural dialogue". This event was well attended by mass media and broadly presented in all Armenian TV channels, broadcast and news papers.

WFD FAO medals

Ms Kadlecikova awarded one medal to the Minister of Agriculture, additional medals to Mr. Arshaluys Tarverdyan, Rector of Armenian Sate Agricultural University, Mr. Petros Nersisyan, scientist – author of different tobacco and soybean varieties, Mr. Derenik Safaryan, scientist in the grape production, Mr. Garnik Shalunts, farmer, and Mr. Samvel Mkrtchyan, farmer, for the excellent support provided to the Sub-regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe of the FAO.

Planting of trees

The WFD celebration has been continued with planting trees by well-known personalities in Armenia. This worthwhile event was organized by “Friends of Nature” NGO.

Musical performance by children

- 2 - The World Food Day Event was celebrated at a kindergarten in Yerevan with a performance given by the children. The representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Armenian Agricultural Academy, the FAO Office in Armenia and several NGOs took part in the event. After the concert they gave gifts to the children.

AUSTRIA

World Food Day (WFD) event on “Power, Globalization, and ” 11th October

“Power, Globalization, and Hunger” event has been organized for on World Food Day as well as for the International Day of , co-organized by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management, the Austrian Forum for Ecological and Social Matters and the Austrian Development Agency. The discussion focused on the social, political, economic, ecological and agricultural dimensions of sustainable agricultural production and consumption.

Ms. Maria Kadlecikova, SEUD, gave a presentation, titled “Intercultural Dialogue – Recognition of Needs and Rights, Enhancing World ”.

The event had 150 participants from various ministries, agencies and embassies. Upon the suggestion of the Austrian Ministry of Agriculture, the FAO Sub-regional Representative has handed over WFD medals to Ms Getroude Pichler, Former Chairperson of the ECA Working Party on Rural Women and Rural Families and also to Mr. Herman Redl, Former Chairman of the ECA Executive Committee.

The event was intensively followed by the Austrian mass media.

CROATIA

WFD celebration round table discussion 16th October National Food Agency from Osijek organized a round table discussion under the title: ”Food and Science” on 16th October with participation of well known experts and mass media.

WFD brochures in Croatian language The WFD brochure was translated into Croatian language and distributed for WFD promotion.

Workshop in Prague 19th October

The workshop “Agriculture and intercultural dialogue” was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and the National FAO Committee with the support of the Food Research Institute in Prague. Mr. Miroslav Toman, Vice Minister and State Secretary chaired the workshop. The lecturers were given by seven famous international and Czech experts. On this occasion a brochure on Agriculture and intercultural dialogue, and relevant FAO activities were printed and freely distributed in Czech language. Governmental institutions, civil society organizations and journalists were invited, too. The WFD observance was covered by several national newspapers. The event was published on the webpage www.bezpecnostpotravin.cz.

GEORGIA

WFD main ceremony - Tbilisi 20th October The main ceremony on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the World Food Day/TeleFood was held in Tbilisi, Courtyard of the Marriott Hotel. The ceremony was attended by high officials of the Georgian Government (Parliament of , Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Environment, Office of the State Minister for European Integration Affairs, Ministry of Economic Development), representatives of donors (USAID, EC Delegation, USDA, Turkish International Cooperation Administration, World Bank, Millennium Challenge Corporation), professors from the State Academy of Agricultural Sciences and State Agricultural University of Georgia and Representatives of international and local non-governmental organizations. Ms Maria Kadlecikova, SEUD and FAO Representative in Georgia welcomed the distinguished guests. In her speech, the Sub-regional Representative highlighted the message of the FAO Director-General for World Food Day/TeleFood on “Agriculture and Intercultural Dialogue” and emphasized that “human and cultural ingenuity, the right vision, partnership and support – including that of FAO and the international community – can surely lead to progress in achieving food security for all.” FAO WFD medals

During this main ceremony on the occasion of WFD/TeleFood celebration, The Sub- regional Representative awarded FAO medals to most prominent persons who significantly contributed to further strengthening FAO presence in Georgia and provided excellent personal support to successful implementation of the Organization’s programme and project activities. The medals have been awarded to: H.E. Giorgi Kheviashvili, Chairperson of Agricultural Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, H.E. Mikheil Svimonishvili, Minister for Agriculture, Mr Levan Ramishvili, Chief Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture in Veterinarian Affairs, Dr Tengiz Urushadze, Rector of state Agricultural University of Georgia, Mr. Lance Clark, UN Resident Coordinator in Georgia and Mr. Mamuka Shatirishvili, Evaluation and Monitoring Director of the Millennium Challenge Georgia Fund.

Visit Tbilisi House of Orphans 21th October

The World Food Day/TeleFood celebration continued next day on 21 October, when the Sub-regional Representative visited the House of Orphans. She met the children and conveyed them note-books, paints and papers for drawing. Ms Nino Kandareli, Director of the House highly appreciated such a kind attention of the Organization to the needs of Georgian orphans, saying that in this way FAO does huge advocacy of its activities and ignites hope in the heart of these children who are a part of the country’s successful future and who are supposed to play an integral role in developing intercultural dialogue through being hopefully engaged in agriculture – which is a traditional pillar of the Georgian economy.

HUNGARY

The World Food Day in Hungary was organized in close collaboration with and support of the FAO Sub-regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe in Budapest, by the Hungarian FAO National Committee, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition. All events were followed by the Hungarian mass media.

Ms Maria Kadlecikova, FAO Sub-regional Representative informed the participants about the WFD 2005 theme - Agriculture and intercultural dialogue - and the FAO activities related to poverty reduction and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals to seven Hungarian, one Slovak and one Mongolian journalists. The Hungarian Television had a short report with Ms Kadlecikova, too.

Presentations and WFD 2005 medals, 13th October, Hungarian Agricultural Museum, Budapest

Six well known Hungarian experts gave presentations on the celebration of WFD on 13 October in Hungarian Agricultural Museum. At the end of the ceremonial meeting Ms Kadlecikova handed over FAO WFD medals to well known Hungarian experts, appreciating their work against hunger and poverty.

Exhibition, 13th October, Hungarian Agricultural Museum in Budapest

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary f the FAO, the 25th observance of WFD and the 10th anniversary of the FAO SEUR, the Sub-regional Office organized an exhibition to introduce the FAO and the FAO SEUR to a wider public in Hungary. Ms Kadlecikova

- 5 - opened the exhibition on 13 October in the Hungarian Agricultural Museum. The exhibition will be open for the public until 31 December.

“Field Day for Health’ 9th October, Budapest, Műlyégpálya

The event was a “health day” for families, including physical activity, food and nutrition topics, quizzes about healthy food and diet, food safety and healthy lifestyle. Health monitoring and medical services: free blood pressure monitoring, BMI calculations, nutrition and nutritional status monitoring, professional nutrition and health advises The event was organized by the Ministry of Health.

FRY MACEDONIA

Press conference, 13th October, Skopje World Food Day press conference was held in the Republic Institute for Health Protection. All electronic and written media were invited. Participants from all regional institutes for health protection in the Republic of Macedonia were present, too.

Visit at the Institution for protection of children without parents, 14th October Skopje Representatives from the IHP visited the Institution for protection of children without parents “11. Oktomvri”- Skopje. Republic Institute for Health Protection made donation of 300kg apples as a symbol of healthy diet. Promotional material was also distributed.

“Happening – presentation of domestic food products”, 16th October, Skopje, Municipality of Karpos Days of concurrency:”I may and I can“ as a happening presentation of domestic food products was held in the Trade center organized by the Municipality of Karpos with the participation of local producers.

Preventive health activities, - 16th October, Skopje, Municipality of Karpos - 6 - Measuring of blood pressure and blood glucose, distribution of WFD promotional material. The activities were performed by the Republic Institute for Health Protection.

TV-Programme on National television, 16th October Chief of the Department for Nutrition and Diet at the Republic Institute for Health Protection gave an interview for the national television concerning the World Food Day.

Posters and brochures There were prepared, published and distributed posters: ”Five keys to safer food” and brochures: ”Five keys to safer food”,” Physical activity and health “, Beverages and their role in the diet”.

MOLDOVA

Scientific workshop, 14th October, Chisinau Theme: “Agriculture and the Moldavian Village as main actors for the food safety/security of the country”

The Republic of celebrated the World Food Day on 14 October in the premises of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. After that there was a reception where this year harvest was represented by various dishes. Mass media followed the event. Representatives of the agricultural and food sector gathered in order to discuss the theme “Agriculture and the Moldavian Village - main actors for food security/safety of the country”. Representatives of the Government, donors (CNFA, EC Food Security Programme, IFAD), Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, heads of the agricultural rayonal sections (Anenii-Noi, Cahul), president of rayon Ialoveni, representatives of the agricultural union and corporation and agencies, investment projects, agricultural economic agents were present, as well as H.E. the Ambassador of the USA to Moldova.

Following the Agenda, the celebration was officially opened by Mr. Anatolie Gorodenco, Minister for Agriculture and Food Industry of the Republic of Moldova. In his introductory speech, Mr. Gorodenco referred to the poverty and as the main problems which FAO addressed and paid special attention starting with the World Food Summit in 1996, when a Plan of actions to fight these problems was approved. In present times, in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals too, the Government of the Republic of Moldova, and, of course, the Ministry for Agriculture and Food Industry, takes measures in order to fight rural poverty and malnutrition. Further, Mr. Gorodenco expressed his appreciation to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for its assistance and support during the past decade. Various projects financed by FAO helped the Moldavian Government to create optimal conditions for poverty reduction in the country and to assure country’s food security/safety. Further, Mr. Minister expressed the Government’s gratitude to - 7 - Ms Maria Kadlecikova, FAO Regional Representative for Central and Eastern Europe, FAO Representative in the Republic of Moldova for the support and active collaboration in order to assure a direct communication and a fruitful cooperation of the country with the FAO. The presentation of Ms. Anna Volneanschi, Deputy Director of the National Scientific and Practical Center for Preventive Medicine was based on the following theme “Food safety of the country – problems and achievements”. Ms Voleanschi raised very important issues related to the significance of the food safety products for the human health, food safety and legal framework for the food safety.

Mr. Mihail Penicov, Director of the Republican Concern for Water Management “Apele Moldovei”, followed by Mr. Tudor Popovici, Deputy Director of the same institution, had presentations about the successes in implementations of the FAO TCP Project “Assistance in Piloting Small-Scale Modern On-Farm Irrigation Technologies”.

The official part of the celebration was closed by a presentation of Ms Tatiana Pavliuc, Director of the LTD “Plaiul Barladean”, who raised various issues related to problems and successes in the agricultural activities of the Moldavian peasants.

Finally, Mr. Minister Anatolie Gorodenco made a wrap-up of the presentations and expressed his appreciation to FAO for the opportunity to organize for the first time in Moldova such an important event and also to the quests for their personal contributions to reduce the poverty and malnutrition in Moldova.

FAO medals WFD FAO medals were handed to experts in Moldova. Mr Bruno Pouezat, continued the opening of the WFD celebration by having a short presentation of the message of the FAO Director/General for World Food Day /TeleFood on “Agriculture and intercultural dialogue”. Further, Mr. Pouezat handed over 5 FAO medals to the following people: Ms. Tatiana Pavliuc, Director, LTD “Plaiul Barladean” (owner of 1360 hectares of arable land); Mr. Anatolie Calasnic, Senior engineer of the Institute for Projection of Water Management Systems “Acvaproiect”; Simion Papuc, Director, LTD “Agro SAVVA” (owner of 400 hectares of arable land); Ion Chilianu, Director “Codru-ST”; Iurie Tiulei, Head of the Joint-stock company “Nistru”. These people made a very important contribution to the development of the national agricultural sector, through their day-by-day fruitful activity in view of agricultural development of the country.

Artistic performance (students of the State Agrarian University) The official part of the celebration was followed by a small concert by the students of the Agricultural State University. Songs and dances performed demonstrated the high abilities of the Moldavian peasants not only to do agriculture but also to enjoy good harvests. - 8 -

SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO

Serbia Celebrates World Food Day with a Host of Food, Nutrition and health related activities ‘’Month of Healthy Nutrition Promotion - October 2005’’. Serbia in cooperation with FAO SEUR and 24 Public health institutes under the patronage of Ministry of Health and Education celebrated World Food Day 2005 with a host of food, nutrition and health-related activities in 23 regions on a regional and finally on the national level. October is Serbia's national month for healthy nutrition promotion, so aside from the WFD theme, Agriculture and Intercultural dialogue, the celebration also included other topics such as: food security, poverty, food safety, nutrition, hunger, nutrition promotion, fruit and vegetable for our health, physical activity, and obesity. Around the central competition, on 16 October in almost all of the regions organized exhibitions of the best children’s art and literature work, some theatrical performances about nutrition, concerts and quizzes about healthy nutrition and education of the population especially children from elementary and secondary schools. Awards were given to the children who produce the best works on regional and national level. Children made works on the WFD theme and ‘’Fruit and vegetable for our health”. There were more than 10.000 children art and literature works from the whole country.

National Celebration of WFD in Serbia

23 Serbian National and Regional Institutes of Public Health celebrated WFD together for the fifth time in Belgrade, with presenting the most successful celebration from the regions and an exhibition of the best children’s art work, that have been awarded with certificates. Ms Mirjana Pavlovic delivered the WFD message of the FAO Director- General and introduced the WFD celebration network in CEE countries with the support of FAO SEUR Budapest, as well as the video film about WFD celebration in the North Backa Region; the “VII Festival of Healthy Nutrition and Physical Activity Promotion’’ in Subotica. Competition for the children art and literature works on WFD theme with exhibition

There were 10.316 children art and 1389 literature works submitted from the whole country for the contests. There were a great number of exhibitions organized of the children’s works – in 152 elementary schools, 78 secondary schools and 125 preschool institutions. The 115 exhibitions in the cities had more than 8000 visitors.

Lectures were given by health professionals in schools, workplaces and communities in the whole country.

Preschool children: 450 lectures in child institutions - more than 1600 children took part – 627 workshops, 81 performances, 21 costume balls.

Schoolchildren: 567 lectures and 712 workshops participating 1700 elementary schoolchildren; 79 lectures 91 workshops in secondary schools with for more than 1200 students.

Poster and other WFD materials on national level

3000 WFD posters and 1500 copies of the WFD leaflet were printed and distributed to regional institutes.

Mass media activities in Serbia during October - Month of Healthy Nutrition Promotion

There were 147 TV programs, 132 radio programs, 317 appearances in TV and radio programmes and 78 published articles in national and regional daily newspapers and magazines.

Regional celebration in Subotica –coordinated by Ms Mirjana Pavlovic VII Festival of Healthy Nutrition And Physical Activity in Subotica in North Bačka Region, Subotica 19th October, Public Health Institute, under the patronage of Municipality Subotica http://www.zzzzsu.org.yu/aw

The central celebration of WFD in Subotica for children included theatrical performances, song and dance numbers, and a quiz on healthy nutrition. Ms Mirjana Pavlovic delivered the WFD message of the FAO Director-General and handed over the acknowledgements with certificates to media and sponsors from food industry which supported this event.

EXIBITION of the children's art and literary works, 18-22 October 2005, Subotica Children's art and literary competition was organized based on nutrition topics and the WFD theme. There were sent more than 1000 children works submitted. The best works were exhibited, and awards and certificates were given on a regional level.

Media promotion of WFD activities The WFD 2005 celebration were reported by Ms Mirjana Pavlovic to national and public TV and radio, articles were published by leading national and regional daily newspapers and magazines as well.

1st International Organic Food Festival Subotica, 27-29.Ocober 2005 was organized by Teras, Association for organic products. An exhibition of the organic products and scientific conference about trends in organic production in national and international level has been organized. After the conference the participants visited the organic farms and shops.

SLOVAK REPUBLIC

Scientific seminar:”Agriculture and International Dialogue”, 17th October, Agroinstitut, Nitra

In the Slovak Republic the WFD celebration was organized in close cooperation with the FAO National Committee of the Slovak Republic and the Agroinstitute, Nitra, and held under the auspices of H.E. the Minister for Agriculture. The main celebration held on 17th October and the principal part of the ceremony was the scientific seminar where leading experts from the Slovak Republic addressed the gathering.

Press conference The WFD celebration was closed with a press conference. The FAO National Committee of the Slovak Republic proposed the Sub-regional Office to award FAO medals to famous experts. FAO WFD medal

The Ministry of Agriculture has also requested to present an FAO medal to Professor Jan Brindza for his excellent contribution to Slovak and European issues related to food security.
