CHILDSPLAY - THE BLOOM OF YOUTH 1) Cuckanandy/Chris Childs 5:20 Mid-tempo song followed by a driving reel. Cuckanandy is an Irish baby dandling song rumored to have been sung by a ghost that haunted the hills around Cuil Aodha. The tune was composed by Hanneke Cassel and features the driving rhythmic sound of 12 fiddles and full band backing them up. 2) The Noodle Vendor/Sweetest Blooms/Avery’s Mazurka 4:21 Orchestral movie soundtrack sound with full band. The first two tunes were inspired by Shannon Heaton’s experience of growing up in Thailand. Don’t be surprised to hear this set in a movie sometime in the near future! 3) Buddy’s Strathspey/The Wooden Whale/The Farmer’s Daughter 4:46 Lively fiddles tunes with beautiful harmonies. Composed by Hanneke Cassel, the first tune is in memory of the great Cape Breton fiddler Buddy MacMaster. The second tune starts with a great fiddle and flute duet and then finishes with a full driving fiddle choir in the last tune! 4) Where are you Tonight I Wonder 5:34 Beautiful ballad with gorgeous string arrangement with multiple harmonies. Written by Andy Stewart of Silly Wizard, the haunting melody and lyrics of this song capture the heartbreak of when a relationship ends. 5) Lara’s Jig/The Burning Snowball/Farewell to London 4:21 Vibrant Irish fiddle tunes guaranteed to make your toes tap!. The first two tunes are driving jigs that capture the full throated sound of the band; then on the final tune Childsplay kicks it into an even higher gear that is played so fast you won’t believe there are 12 fiddles playing at the same time. Also complete with harmonies. 6) Sailing off to Yankeeland 5:53 Slower tempo song with a beautifully arranged orchestral back up. A song abut emigration that is fitting for our times, Sailing Off to Yankeeland captures the feeling of what it is like to leave your native land for unknown destinations as well as what it is like for parents to be separated from their children. Karan’s voice has never been finer! WWW.CHILDSPLAY.ORG 7) The Bloom of Youth/Temple House/Sailing In 2:52 Grooving rhythmic fiddle tunes, with a fresh up tempo sound. This set captures Childsplay’s ability to convey great fiddle playing with tight arrangements at break neck speed. 8) Turka 4:51 Whimsical, gypsy like tune with dynamic harmony part playing. Turka is one of the favorite pieces for the band as it showcases an incredibly difficult melody played a very up tempo pace yet with a very whimsical arrangement. Bonnie Bewick, a member of the Boston Symphony. Bonnie and Sheila Falls are featured on this piece in a wonderful exchange of call and response fiddling com- plete with the dynamic voicing of the whole group. 9) The Fiddle and the Drum 4:55 Sparsely arranged with a pulsing feel to convey the lyrical tension, the fiddles are so tight that the band sounds like a harmonium. In singing this anti-war song written by Joni Mitchell Karan’s voice makes this version of the Fiddle and the Drum ring with truth and passion. 10) Acadia March/Essex Wedding Reel 4:38 Slow tempo tune with gorgeous harmonies followed by an upbeat fun melodic tune. Katie Mc- Nally’s two tunes show that fiddle music is alive and well as a living tradition in the 21st century. 11) Maids of Galway/Jenny Picking Cockles/Epic Reel 4:34 Hypnotic intoxicating rhythms with full-throated melodies, up-tempo. The first two tunes showcase a musical conversation between the band members before ending up with a recently composed tune by Keith Murphy that shows how multilayered harmonies can bring music to life! 12) Lovely Annie 4:57 A light, sparse gorgeous arrangement of a beautifully penned song. Karan wrote this song as a tribute to her late mother and it conveys the depth of feeling of what it is like to lose someone you love so dearly. 13) One to One Waltz 3:36 Beautiful slow waltz tempo with lovely harmony playing. Every dance ends with a waltz, so to this album comes to an end with a delicious and lyrical melody that is sure to have listeners ask someone to dance! Total time: 60: 59.
