BENTLEY CRICKET CLUB Yearbook 2019/20
BENTLEY CRICKET CLUB Yearbook 2019/20 www.bentleycc.com T20 Charity Match Excerpt from the Canning Examiner Two of Wyong Reserve’s long-time sporting clubs came together on the weekend to support charitable causes close to both clubs. Counselor Graham Barry and Mayor Patrick Hall were in attendance to see the Bentley “Legends” team take on the Canning Tigers in a curtain raiser to the WASTCA Division 1 T20 match played in the afternoon between Bentley CC and cross-town rivals Curtin Victoria Park CC The Canning Tigers fielded a competitive team, whereas Bentley skipper Chris Lockyer selected a more diverse range of current and former players. Indeed, the Tigers went on to prove they can play the “gentleman’s game”. Having won the toss and electing to bat, the Tigers batsman hit boundaries seemingly at will to amass 140 runs from their allotment of overs. Such a target was always going to be a tough ask for the Legends to chase, particularly with the accurate bowling and superb fielding on display from the young Tigers side. Bentley finished their innings all out for 104. Glenn Hewitt presented the Vaelan Hewitt memorial trophy to the Canning Tigers and congratulated them on their win. At 3pm the ‘real’ cricketers commenced their game when Bentley won the toss and elected to bat against Curtin Vic Park. Bentley opener Awais Mehdi proceeded to delight the large contingent of spectators with an explosive display of clean hitting, smashing 123 from 59 balls including 9 fours and 10 sixes. Mehdi’s innings saw Bentley finish their 20 overs at 4/189, setting an imposing target of 190 for Curtin Vic Park. -
And When the Girl Said for the Third Time, 'Call for Mr. Sobers,' Sir Gary Went up to the Recep- Tionist and Said; 'Excuse
Friday 20th May, 2011 15 BY REX CLEMENTINE (Continued from yesterday) n this penultimate episode of the interview with Roy Dias in our segment ‘Lords at Lord’s,’ IDias reveals the role of Sir Gary Sobers, who coached Sri Lanka in the 1980s, in ensuring that the British respected the members of his young team. Dias recalls one particular incident where Sir Gary intervened during the 1983 Prudential World Cup in England when the receptionists at the team hotel were rude to some of the Sri Lankan players. He also dwells extensively on Sri Lanka’s deci- sion to bowl first in the famous 1998 Oval Test which marked Sri Lanka’s first ever Test win on English soil. He also recalls Sir Gary’s influence on his career and the tips he provided when he didn’t know how to get through nervousness before bat- ting and the roles played by Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvan Atapattu and Muttiah Muralitharan dur- ing that successful 1998 tour to England of which Dias was the Sri Lanka coach. Following are excerpts: Question: Tell us about the decision to bowl first at The Oval in 1998. Was it discussed exten- sively by the team management? Roy: We had already won the Emirates Cup tri series and we were determined to do well in the one off Test Match as well, at least to draw the game. The wicket was good. Ranjan Paranavithana (who covered the series for our sister paper ‘Divaina’) had a camera and he took a shot where Arjuna (Ranatunga), Ari (Aravinda de Silva) and I were looking at the wicket on one end and on the other end, David Graveney, Nasser Hussain and Alec Stewart were looking at the wicket as well. -
