BENTLEY CRICKET CLUB Yearbook 2019/20 BENTLEY CRICKET CLUB Yearbook 2019/20 www.bentleycc.com T20 Charity Match Excerpt from the Canning Examiner Two of Wyong Reserve’s long-time sporting clubs came together on the weekend to support charitable causes close to both clubs. Counselor Graham Barry and Mayor Patrick Hall were in attendance to see the Bentley “Legends” team take on the Canning Tigers in a curtain raiser to the WASTCA Division 1 T20 match played in the afternoon between Bentley CC and cross-town rivals Curtin Victoria Park CC The Canning Tigers fielded a competitive team, whereas Bentley skipper Chris Lockyer selected a more diverse range of current and former players. Indeed, the Tigers went on to prove they can play the “gentleman’s game”. Having won the toss and electing to bat, the Tigers batsman hit boundaries seemingly at will to amass 140 runs from their allotment of overs. Such a target was always going to be a tough ask for the Legends to chase, particularly with the accurate bowling and superb fielding on display from the young Tigers side. Bentley finished their innings all out for 104. Glenn Hewitt presented the Vaelan Hewitt memorial trophy to the Canning Tigers and congratulated them on their win. At 3pm the ‘real’ cricketers commenced their game when Bentley won the toss and elected to bat against Curtin Vic Park. Bentley opener Awais Mehdi proceeded to delight the large contingent of spectators with an explosive display of clean hitting, smashing 123 from 59 balls including 9 fours and 10 sixes. Mehdi’s innings saw Bentley finish their 20 overs at 4/189, setting an imposing target of 190 for Curtin Vic Park. Both BCC opening bowlers struck early with Mitchell Crew and Zain Ul-Hassan taking a wicket each and containing the runs to make a hard task for the CVP batsmen look even more difficult. First changers in skipper Brendan Daye and Laurence Paice also struck within a few overs to see Curtin Vic Park in trouble at 4/61. A further bowling change saw spinner Craig Stephenson brought on from the Wyong Road end, who proceeded to confound the opposition’s lower order. His figures of 5/9 (4 overs) setting a new best bowling figures record for the club in a T20, matching Mehdi’s highest BCC T20 score record set earlier in the afternoon as Curtin Vic Park finished at 9/113. Charitable funds raised from a bat raffle, sausage sizzle, bouncy castle and afternoon tea will be donated to SIDS and Fight MND, the nominated charities for BCC and CTFC respectively. Both clubs would like to thank the City of Canning for their ongoing support in this annual event and the attendance by elected representatives is always appreciated. Chris Lockyer as a member of both sporting clubs was instrumental in the success of the day. Thank you all for your efforts and support in making the 2019/20 season a successful & enjoyable year both on and off the field. We ended the season as 1st grade premiers which is a credit to all involved with the club. Firstly I’d like to thank the committee for all their hard work this season which began all the way back to the AGM in May 2019. I’d like to give a special mention to our Treasurer Darren Leng for all his efforts this season which has been above & beyond what is expected of a treasurer. To the whole committee it’s a huge job to keep the club up and running and you all did a fantastic job in making sure everything went as smoothly as possible. Our aim as a committee is to do everything we can to ensure on field success but also with an eye to the future in growing the club and keeping the club continually moving forward. We made some big decisions in setting things up for the years ahead which is very pleasing. Undoubtedly the highlight of this season was the awarding of the 1st grade flag to the club for what is only the third time in the club’s history. Whilst we all would have preferred to play in finals instead of the extremely unusual finish to the season via the Covid-19 pandemic, this meant finishing on top of the ladder at the end of the qualifying season took on extra importance this season. Well done again to Brendan Daye and his first grade team. Such a fantastic achievement and one the club as a whole should be very proud of. Congratulations to Fab Fanayan and his 3rd grade team for qualifying for finals. Unfortunately they weren’t able to have a crack at the flag but a fantastic effort nonetheless. I thought the 6th & 7th grade teams and the One day team were all very competitive throughout the season even though they missed finals. We are slowly building good depth throughout the grades which will pay off in the years ahead. To Jay, Josh, DT, Mark Petta, Craig Stephenson and the Captains, a special thank you for your all your hard work over the season on the cricket side of things. It has made the committee’s job a lot easier knowing we can leave it all to you guys. Also a big thanks to Jesse Liddle for all his work this season in running the Juniors Blasters program which has been a big success. We look forward to growing this even further in the seasons ahead. Its great to have juniors back for the first time at Bentley in over 30 years. On behalf of the club I’d like to thank our Sponsors for your support. As we look to continue to grow the club in coming seasons, including the development of turf training nets and the introduction of junior teams, your ongoing support is going to be invaluable. We look forward to continuing our relationship and welcome any feedback you might have. We had some great social functions over the year again and the support from the players is always much appreciated.

Friday 20th May, 2011 15 BY REX CLEMENTINE (Continued from yesterday) n this penultimate episode of the interview with Roy Dias in our segment ‘Lords at Lord’s,’ IDias reveals the role of Sir Gary Sobers, who coached Sri Lanka in the 1980s, in ensuring that the British respected the members of his young team. Dias recalls one particular incident where Sir Gary intervened during the 1983 Prudential World Cup in England when the receptionists at the team hotel were rude to some of the Sri Lankan players. He also dwells extensively on Sri Lanka’s deci- sion to bowl first in the famous 1998 Oval Test which marked Sri Lanka’s first ever Test win on English soil. He also recalls Sir Gary’s influence on his career and the tips he provided when he didn’t know how to get through nervousness before bat- ting and the roles played by Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvan Atapattu and Muttiah Muralitharan dur- ing that successful 1998 tour to England of which Dias was the Sri Lanka coach. Following are excerpts: Question: Tell us about the decision to bowl first at The Oval in 1998. Was it discussed exten- sively by the team management? Roy: We had already won the Emirates Cup tri series and we were determined to do well in the one off Test Match as well, at least to draw the game. The wicket was good. Ranjan Paranavithana (who covered the series for our sister paper ‘Divaina’) had a camera and he took a shot where Arjuna (Ranatunga), Ari (Aravinda de Silva) and I were looking at the wicket on one end and on the other end, David Graveney, Nasser Hussain and Alec Stewart were looking at the wicket as well.
