The Hyborian Review Volume 3, Number 8. August 31, 1998 Laboring, I tell ya… Great REH Quotes From The Hour of the Dragon, Howard's full-length Conan tale, written in the spring of 1934, published serially in Weird Tales, December 1935-April 1936. In a small glade below him four soldiers in Nemedian chain-mail were binding a noose about the neck of a gaunt old woman in peasant garb. A heap of fagots, bound with cord on the ground nearby, showed what her occupation had been when surprized by these stragglers. Conan felt slow fury swell his heart as he looked silently down and saw the ruffians dragging her toward a tree whose low- spreading branches were obviously intended to act as a gibbet. He had crossed the frontier an hour ago. He was standing on his own soil, watching the murder of one of his own subjects. The old woman was struggling with surprizing strength and energy, and as he watched, she lifted her head and voiced again the strange, weird, far-carrying call he had heard before. It was echoed as if in mockery by the raven flapping above the trees. The soldiers laughed roughly, and one struck her on the mouth. Conan swung from his weary steed and dropped down the face of the rocks, landing with a clang of mail on the grass… “Dogs!” he said without passion and without mercy. “Do Nemedian jackals set themselves up as executioners and hang my subjects at will? First you must take the head of their king.

Title: Conquering Information Literacy, Conan the Librarian Public Library Audience: Public Library Patrons Grades 4th-7th Designers’ Names: Designed by Marie Cirelli, Gweneth Morton, and Andy Wolverton 1. Rationale for instruction: An information literate student can be defined as “one who accesses information efficiently and effectively, critically evaluates the information, and uses it accurately and creatively” (Grassian and Kaplowitz, 2009, p. 4). With the information explosion on the Internet, it is becoming more difficult and more important to be information literate. The public library can play a vital role in the education of its patrons by offering them the opportunity to learn and master the skills needed to be considered information literate. The mission of a public library is to provide information, support lifelong learning, and enrich the lives of its patrons. Based on experience with the patrons of the library and the mission of the library, an information literacy course for students in grades 4th-7th is being developed as a way to further support our patrons and meet the mission of the library. 2. Goal and objectives: Goal: The learner will understand how to search for and evaluate information from a variety of sources. Objective 1: The learner will apply the I-LEARN model. Objective 2: The learner will locate appropriate sources using the Internet and OPAC. Objective 3: The learner will apply the previously found information. Overview 1. Brief summary of unit: The unit is a three-day program in which students learn how to search for and evaluate information from a variety of sources. The program is structured for a younger age group and focuses on hands-on learning and immediate feedback.

  • The Hour of the Dragon by Robert E
The Hour of the Dragon By Robert E. Howard Chapter 1: O Sleeper, Awake! THE LONG TAPERS flickered, sending the black shadows wavering along the walls, and the velvet tapestries rippled. Yet there was no wind in the chamber. Four men stood about the ebony table on which lay the green sarcophagus that gleamed like carven jade. In the upraised right hand of each man a curious black candle burned with a weird greenish light. Outside was night and a lost wind moaning among the black trees. Inside the chamber was tense silence, and the wavering of the shadows, while four pairs of eyes, burning with intensity, were fixed on the long green case across which cryptic hieroglyphics writhed, as if lent life and movement by the unsteady light. The man at the foot of the sarcophagus leaned over it and moved his candle as if he were writing with a pen, inscribing a mystic symbol’ in the air. Then he set down the candle in its black gold stick at the foot of the case, and, mumbling some formula unintelligible to his companions, he thrust a broad white hand into his fur-trimmed robe. When he brought it forth again it was as if he cupped in his palm a ball of living fire. The other three drew in their breath sharply, and the dark, powerful man who stood at the head of the sarcophagus whispered: “The Heart of Ahriman!” The other lifted a quick hand for silence. Somewhere a dog began howling dolefully, and a stealthy step padded outside the barred and bolted door.

REHeapa Autumnal Equinox 2015 By Lee A. Breakiron ONE-SHOT WONDERS By definition, fanzines are nonprofessional publications produced by fans of a particular cultural phenomenon, such as a literary or musical genre, for the pleasure of others who share their interests. Readers themselves often contribute to fanzines by submitting their own articles, reviews, letters of comment, and fan fiction. Though the term fanzine only dates from 1940 when it was popularized within science fiction and comic book fandom, the first fanzines actually date back to at least the nineteenth century when, as a uniquely American development, literary groups formed amateur press associations or APAs in order to publish collections of poetry, fiction, and commentary. Few, if any, writers have had as many fanzines, chapbooks, and other ephemera dedicated to them as has Robert E. Howard. Howard himself self-published his own typed “zine,” The Golden Caliph of four loose pages in about August, 1923 [1], as well as three issues of one entitled The Right Hook in 1925 (discussed later). Howard collaborated with his friends Tevis Clyde “Clyde” Smith, Jr., and Truett Vinson in their own zines, The All-Around Magazine and The Toreador respectively, in 1923 and 1925. (A copy of The All-Around Magazine sold for $911 in 2005.) Howard also participated in an amateur essay, commentary, and poetry journal called The Junto that ran from 1928 to 1930, contributing 10 stories and 13 poems to 10 of the issues that survive. Only one copy of this monthly “travelogue” was circulated among all the members of the group.

Mary Joy Scott is showing me around her equipment at Ed Hardy’s Tattoo City in San Francisco. Mary is a big deal in the world of tattoo art but I was not there to get a tatto. I wanted to talk about her craft because one of the artists that she’s really inspired by is Margaret Brundage. And if you haven’t heard of Margaret Brundage, don’t worry. Most people haven’t. In the 1930s, Brundage drew covers for a pulp fiction magazine called Weird Tales. Pulp fiction is usually thought of as hard boiled detective stories. But Weird Tales specilaized in fantasy and horror stories by writers like H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard – who I talked about in my last episode. And the covers that Margaret Brundage drew for the magazine were just as iconic. MARY: They're just so beautifully rendered they have such an inner life more so than some pulp illustrations that I've seen. The most famous Brundage illustration has a woman alone on the cover. She’s wearing a black sleveless top. Her arms are raised with the back of her palms against her cheecks.
