Nigeria: Sustainable Clean Water and Sanitation in Small Towns and Rural Areas in Enugu State, Nigeria Global Environment & Technology Foundation (GETF) Enugu State, Nigeria Program: Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN) Project Quick Facts Project Name: Sustainable Clean Water and Sanitation in Small Towns and Rural Areas in Enugu State, Nigeria Location: Enugu State, Nigeria Project Duration: May 2019 - December 2020 Beneficiaries: ¥ 12,340 individuals with improved access to water ¥ 17,447 individuals with improved access to sanitation ¥ 5,747 women and youth economically empowered Key Partners: WaterAid Activities Summary: This project improved the lives of 17,447 people in 5 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Enugu State through access to sustainable WASH services that promote income generating businesses for women and youth. WaterAid will strengthen the capacity of local water institutions to support community WASH management structures. Project Description Enugu State has faced population growth and increasing urbanization (particularly from 2007 to 2014) without commensurate increases in WASH services. Only about 59.2% of households have access to an improved water supply, 32.9% of households have access to basic sanitation, while 39.8% still practice open defecation. A recent study in the Journal of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development revealed a gap between water demand and supply in Enugu State: 13,685.5 liters per person per day (Lpd) and 9,028.8 Lpd, respectively leaving a daily household deficit of 4,656.9 Lpd. This study indicated that water schemes developed by governments and partners are largely non-functional mainly due to inadequate technical supervision. Around 42% of the population relies on contaminated streams and rivers, unlined and unprotected wells, and harvested and stored rainwater. The LGAs for this project struggle to make affordable and aspirational household sanitation products locally available. Capacity gaps, poor financial support for businesses and unfavorable regulatory frameworks stifle the development of viable medium and small-scale sanitation enterprises. With RAIN support, WaterAid has constructed 1 motorized small-town water scheme in Nsukka LGA and 5 boreholes equipped with handpumps in Ugwuaji in Enugu South LGA. In addition, WaterAid has rehabilitated 12 boreholes equipped with handpumps in Ezeagu, Uzo-Uwani and Isiuzo LGAs. They have also provided opportunities for at least 195 women and youth to engage in water and sanitation businesses and 3,400 toilets have been delivered to households. Nigeria: Sustainable Clean Water and Sanitation in Small Towns and Rural Areas in Enugu State, Nigeria Global Environment & Technology Foundation (GETF) Enugu State, Nigeria Program: Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN) RAIN Program Overview Launched by TCCF (in 2010) in response to the severe health challenges faced by millions of Africans living without access to safe drinking water, RAIN aims to improve access to safe water for 6 million people in Africa by 2020. In addition, RAIN aims to create employment opportunities for women, youth and families through water project activities as well as improve childrenÕs learning environment through WASH in schools. RAIN is backed by an 11-year, $65 million dollar commitment by TCCF and made possible through the support of more than 140 partners. Grant period: 2010-2020 (11 years). Program Description: RAIN supports a wide range of water-related projects in response to AfricaÕs significant challenges in meeting the SDGs on water. Projects are designed to meet specific community needs including water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); productive use of water; and watershed protection..
