These narratives circulated and gained a popular audience in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Normandy, England, and France. Hagiography scholars have focused on the ways in which vernacular portrayals of female saints reveal medieval ideas of gender; this study evaluates the extent to which ideology is indexed through both the gender and the geographical origin of the saints in question. It considers how the contexts of pilgrimage and crusade offer a new framework for the larger discussion of these texts. It is also Scotland’s only example of the work of the great American sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907). Westminster has a reduction of his standing statue of Lincoln from Chicago; Dublin has the Parnell Monument, to a large extent the work of his studio when Saint-Gaudens himself was dying. But, in the Stevenson Memorial, Edinburgh has a work which held greater personal significance for the sculptor: it commemorates a friend. The portrait, in low relief, is familiar through reproduction. Stevenson lies, propped by pillows, on a scroll-backed couch - but the trappings of invalidism are belied by his alert expression. A pen is poised in his thin fingers. The work conveys so much of Stevenson’s traditional image: the dedicated writer persevering in spite of chronic tuberculosis; the free spirit in the fragile body - images appropriate to a monument to a dead man. In fact, the portrait was modelled when he was very much alive. It was begun in New York in the autumn of 1887, soon after Stevenson and Saint-Gaudens met. Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ name is no longer familiar, although his public monuments and intimate portraits in low relief received international acclaim in his time.

Prof. Dr. David Thornton July 2019 This thesis succinctly investigates the chronological traces and the historical development of the cult of St. Katherine of Alexandria in Late Medieval Scotland. The main argument of this study evolves around why possibly the cult of St. Katherine has not been examined in the previous literature, although the Katherine-cult was predominantly recognized by the Scottish population. The thesis will trace the cult through gradual methodological and contextual steps, that are, hagiography, liturgy, dedications, and onomastics. The outcome will attest to the necessity of the re-evaluation and recognition that the Katherine-cult in Late Medieval Scotland was not any less significant than the cults of native saints of Scotland.

    2nd Sunday of Easter “The 14 Holy Helpers” Fr. Frank Schuster Given that we are a little over a month into celebrating Sunday Mass remotely due to Covid 19, I got thinking about life in the Middle Ages with all the diseases they put up with and wondered if the people in those days had favorite saints to venerate or plea to for intercession during times of plague. What I discovered is that there were a number of saints that were called upon for intercession during those years, 14 to be precise. These 14 saints were collectively called the 14 Holy Helpers. Giving them this title was a way of venerating and calling for their intercession all at once instead of individually, quite practical when you think about it. The Holy Helpers are Saints Acacius, Barbara, Blaise, Christopher, Cyriacus, Catherine of Alexandria, Denis, Erasmus of Formiae, Eustace, George, Giles, Margaret of Antioch, Pantaleon, and Vitus. All of them are worthy of reverence and have interesting stories worth looking into, however, for today I am only going to focus on a couple of the many interesting thoughts about them. The first is, we have a relic in our altar of Saint Blaise, Bishop and Martyr. His story is well known because he is associated with the throat blessing every February. Recall that he miraculously saved a boy from choking on a fish bone prior to his gruesome martyrdom. The second interesting thought I would like to share today about the 14 Holy Helpers is that every one of them died a martyr’s death with the exception of Saint Giles who was actually a holy monk who founded a monastery and was also a great visionary.

    case study 32 Saint Giles, Shipbourne, Kent 1722 Parish church, demolished, new church built in 1879 Architect: James Gibbs (1682–1754) Son of a merchant in Aberdeen, James Gibbs was trained in Rome by Carlo Fontana. Back into England his career was struggling under his Catholic repu- tation. This smoothed under Queen Anne’s Tory and High Church regime. He was—thanks to Wren—appointed one of the surveyors of the 1711 Church Act. Gibbs was active as a church builder (see also the church of St Martin in the Fields (CS34)) as well as a designer of country houses and public buildings in- cluding the Radcliffe Camera, Oxford (with Nicholas Hawksmoor).1 Historical note Shipbourne church was originally a chapel depending on the parish church of Tonbridge. The church was rebuilt in 1722 by order of Christopher Vane, first Baron Barnard and a Whig MP from 1675 to 1690. Vane was the second son of Henry Vane. Henry Vane had been educated at Geneva and distanced himself from the English Church and monarchy. During the Civil War he became an in- veterate member of the rebellion against the monarchy. At the Restoration he was sentenced to death. After the death of his eldest brother Thomas, without issue, Christopher inherited Raby Castle, Durham and Fairlawn Kent.
