Dear Participants, Volunteers, Sponsors, and Friends: We want to thank you for your participation in the 42nd annual St. George Marathon and for allowing us to help you as you set out to accomplish your 2018 race goals. We wish we could take credit for the cooler weather which many of you thought helped you with faster times. This year’s winners are Jonathan B. Kotter from Holladay, Utah at 2:16:17 and Sylvia Bedford from South Jordan, UT at 2:38:05. Our Masters winners are Melchor Suaste from West Valley City, Utah at 2:31:29 and Jane Durfey from Highland, Utah at 2:49:27. We had 5 new records set this year: • Grayson N. Wolfe from Herriman, UT at 3:13:33 for Men’s 14 & Under; • Carolyn I. Allen from Lehi, UT at 3:1:44 for Women’s 15-18; • Sylvia Bedford from South Jordan, UT at 2:38:05 for Women’s 25-29; • Bill Cobler from Holladay, UT at 2:44:41 for Men’s 55-59; and • Michael R. Shepherd from Pleasant Grove, UT at 2:52:06 for Men’s Weight Under 40. Seventy-two (72) family members were inducted into our Ten Year Club this year making the club more than 1,516 members strong! We also inducted twenty-four (24) members into our 20-Year Club and nine (9) members into our 30-Year Club this year. We would like to thank our community partners, sponsors and our dedicated staff for all the support and hard work they put in to making the St. George Marathon one of the best marathons in the nation. This means a lot to our community to be able to hold an event of this magnitude and showcase the natural beauty St. George and its surrounding areas has to offer its residents and visitors.     E. Pamfilova Translation by Michael Grachev RUSSIA IN 2012: CIVIL SOCIETY AND PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS Russia is moving towards 2012 Presidential elections. The most recent developments and changes in its political landscape since December 2011 evidenced in higher level of activity of various social groups, open expression of dissatisfaction with the current political system, and nervous responses by the power structures triggered by the shifts in the traditionally perceived predictable future of the country. The new developments in civil society set the stage for the advanced preliminary forecast of the future of the political situation in Russia. This paper summarizes preconditions to the most recent changes in the Russian civil society. It reviews the evolution of the major social organizations and civil groups with the emphasis on their attitude to and participation in the election process, studies the mechanisms of the party and non-party structures in the pre-election campaign, emphasizes the role of the existing and emerging leaders in the “social opposition” and current administration in changing the traditional political status quo, explores the trends in the public opinion towards elections and political developments, highlights the role of Internet in informing and motivating social groups, and considers the impact of the media on shaping the process and character of the approaching presidential elections. The paper is based on observations and information from public sources. It presents my view on the pre-election developments and Russia’s political situation in the aftermath of March 2012. I. The conclusion based on the analysis of the current social and political developments in Russia can be summarized as follows: In its political life Russia will be able to avoid two potential extreme scenarios – either continued political stagnation or radical transformation like the regime changes in a number of Arab countries.

Slobodchikoff, Troy University Mission Statement Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, little attention was paid to Russia, Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union. The United States and many Western governments reassigned their analysts to address different threats. Scholars began to focus much less on Russia, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, instead turning their attention to East Asia among other regions. With the descent of Ukraine into civil war, scholars and govern- ments have lamented the fact that there are not enough scholars studying Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. This series focuses on the Russian, Eurasian, and Eastern European region. We invite contributions addressing problems related to the politics and relations in this region. This series is open to contributions from scholars representing comparative politics, international relations, history, literature, linguistics, religious studies, and other disciplines whose work involves this important region.
