The 112-year-old St Saviours Church, which houses the Pirongia Heritage and Informa- tion Centre, was last painted by inmates of the Corrections Department in 2001 after it was returned to Pirongia from Waikeria. Now, following a Lion Foun- dation Grant of $5000 and $3790 in Pub Charity funding, the Centre will receive a fresh coat of paint. Thanks to their contribution and the generosity of Greg Dunn of Town and Country Painters, who reduced his charges as a benefit to the community, the Centre is well ahead on its main- tenance programme. This also means it is in good stead for the upcoming jubilee. Alan Hall has committed him- self to producing an historical booklet, with local information on popular events — such as the introduction of electricity and water to the community, and the opening of the Memorial Hall on Franklin Street, as well as when the saleyards were in operation. BY COLIN THORSEN

Rushlee Buchanan is now switching her focus to road racing after winning two bronze medals at the BikeNZ national track championships in Invercargill. Te Awamutu Sports Cycling Club’s Olympian flew out Saturday to commence another campaign riding for USA professional team TIBCO. Her first race is a Classic in Belgium on February 23. She then tours around Europe for a month contesting eight races in Belgium, Holland, France and Italy before heading back to the USA in April. ‘‘I’m really excited about Europe,’’ says Buchanan. ‘‘It’s going to be cold and brutal but it’s what I’ve always wanted to do. ‘‘We race the most historic races on the cycling calendar (the Classics) - one-day races but really famous, hard and intense.’’ On her return to the USA, Buchanan has a team camp leading into the American racing. ‘‘I’m pleased with where I am at, and happy with my track nationals results considering it was the first time on the track bike since London. ‘‘The nationals were a bit different this year. No-one had been doing any track time before hand because there were no selections or teams going anywhere for the women. It was quite nice to not have full pressure. ‘‘It was also nice to know how I can go on the track with no track training.’’ Buchanan says she will look forward to returning home to Te Awamutu in September to TC190213SP13 resume training for the track.
