Pegs 4 MMS® \IWLM\)M DIGEST ICE HOCKEY POSTAL STATIONERY OF U.S.S.R.

Ice Hockey in the Soviet Union has the same meaning as in Canada: The number one sport with the masses. Soviet Postal Authorities honor their National Team's World Championships with stamps and overprints. The stamps are readily available and well known to all of us. But Postal Stationery; it's sort of a mystery! The author made repeated attempts at finding out if Soviet Postal Authorities or Philatelic Society could furnish any information at all, as to how many were issued so far? Are they announced? Or simply put on sale? Is there a listing of all the stationery in U.S.S.R.? (This would be a "monumental" list, since a great variety is issued). But all in vain, no answer at all. So I am making a modest attempt at listing the stationery on my own. ©

CANADA OFFERS ONLY ONE POSTAL CARD HOCKEY HALL OF FAME AT TORONTO

After going over the Soviet Stationery, it's almost a pity to see that the other giant of world hockey has only one Postal Card to offer. There are two un-official post cards for the "Team Canada" vs. USSR series, but they can qualify as "souvenirs" only, since it's a private issue by the Bank of Nova Scotia, nice items, but unfortunately only "souvenirs", despite the fact that many collectors will include them in their collecions.

Questions 11 concerning sports and Olympic philately will be assigned a number and published In JSP. Responses to questions will be printed In subsequent Issues. Address all questions and answers to your editor: Edward B. Epstein, Paterson Board of Education, 33 Church St., Paterson, NJ 075 5. Please cite your source of information. A-2 Lance Wyman, who adapted the Munich cycling design (1*4-60) and run lng design (1^62) for two of the U.S. stamps honoring the 1972 Olympic Games stated that the Munich graphic symbols used for the Munich venue handstamps are credited to Gerhard Joksch, Elena Wlnschermann, and Rolf Muller under the direction of Otl Aicher. Molson*s 1976 Montreal Games book, "The Olympic Disciplines" pic tures, on pg. 2k, the symbols of the 21 disciplines. The book states, "For the 1976 Olympic Games, C0J0 has chosen to retain the symbols introduced at the Munich Games. This decision marks the beginning of the standardization of the symbols which repre sent the various Olympic disciplines." Several nations have pictured these symbols on their stamps. For those collectors who are interested in them the following Infor mation is provided. Running - US (lk60) Cyoling - US (ll*62) Running, Wrestling, Shooting Hockey (on one stamp) - India (555) Rowing - New Zealand (515) Wrestling - Egypt (922) Boxing - Egypt (921) Handball - Egypt (C1^9) Basketball - Egypt (923) Swimming - Egypt (C151) Welghtllfting - Egypt (C150) Archery - Cyprus (383) Gymnastic8 - Egypt (C152) Soccer - Cyprus (385) Wrestling - Cyprus (384) Q-2-7 Can anyone provide information about the first sports commemora- tive cancellation? A-27 Otto Hornung^ book "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Stamp Col lecting", pg. 198, states "The first commemorative cancellation was in use from 26 July to 9 Aug. 1863 In Leipzig for the German Gymnastic Festivities. The text on this cancellation reads, •Thurn-Fest-Platz-Lelpzig1. Since there was no date on this can cellation the normal CDS was used as well. Q-28 Could you Identify the animals and birds that accompany the sport figures on the Jugoslavian l6th Olympic Games set (461-68)? A friend of mine and myself disagree.

THE PANAMIAN OLYMPIC STAMP "TRANSITION" by Joe Schirmer From personal experiences In the past, I well know that various countries like Bulgaria, Haiti, Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador, Arabian Tru- cial Statjs, Panama, etc., have either sold entire Issues to certain dealers, or else permitted certain dealers tu use plates and print as their costs dictated. Naturally various persons in the governments and these dealers made a nice profit and the collector was "gigged" once again. Ove:- '-he years I have been able to obtain the majority of these * ssues a^'; their associated stories, but there is one that is escaping 17 me rather nicely the 24 April 1964 issue of Panama 6 triangular shaped stamps 2 regular postage and 4 airmail. These were issued to Space Conquest (Syncom 3). Scott does not list them but they do have them listed in Vol. 1 "for the Record". Between certain factions In Panama and Europe, the 5$ red became a 50^ green and showed the Olympic Rings at the apex of the triangular shape with no other mention of Olympic Games anywhere. Further, 2 souvenir sheets were Issued: 50^ green perforated; and 50^ red imperforated and were printed with the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games data. This "transition" came to life around 4 June 1969 and the Panamlan government claimed to have the situation under control and would pro secute the offenders. Scott does not mention the souvenir sheets. However, our old pal Hermann Sieger In his "Olympia Katalog" not only mentions the single stamp that was "transisted" but also mentions both souvenir sheets, and dates them as of January 1965. He claims 7500 sheets were issued. Discussion: if the 50^ green single was printed In Europe as stated; was the 50^ green souvenir sheet also printed there??? And If this be the case, was the 50-^ red printed In Panama and was it the original issue??? But Scott makes no mention of the souvenir sheets, so this would lead me to believe that the 50$ red souvenir sheet was also the work of European promoters. I have both souvenir sheets in my collection along with the com plete setbut my copy is the 50^ green (European printing). Inquiries to various dealers have lead me nowhere to date. If any of the SPI members or dealers who may happen to read this, can further enlighten me on this Issue, please do so. I welcome cor respondence at the address listed on page four of this issue.
