SUMMARY OF PH.D. THESIS
For doctoral work a study on herbaceous plant resources of Nallamalais was done. Nallamalais is one of the 10 exclusive Centres of Plant Diversity in the country has yielded significant results. A total of 729 herbaceous taxa were recorded from 175 grids. These comprise 708 species belonging to 320 genera and 79 families. One hundred and ninety four are additional distributional records for Nallamalais including one to India, 2 to Peninsular India, 9 to Andhra Pradesh State and 46 to Southern Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh. The dominant family is Poaceae with 187 taxa. Out of 53 endemic taxa recorded in Nallamalais 32 are recovered in the investigation.
Of the 729 herbaceous taxa recorded from the sampled grids, 355 taxa are having on or other use value. Of these, 188 taxa (53%) used as medicinal, 36 (10%) are edible, 88 (24.7%) with fodder value, 38 (10.7%) are genetic resource for crop plants, 50 (14%) with ornamental value and 15 taxa (4.2%) of miscellaneous uses.
Taken into consideration, the mean elevation range, only 3 grids are found with <200m altitude comprising 29 taxa; 88 grids in a range of 201-400m comprising 502 taxa 52 grids in a range of 401-600m comprising 371 taxa and 26 grids comprising 389 species. The highest elevation range >800m encompasses only 6 grids which comprises 118 taxa. Moist deciduous forest is found only in 2% of grids. Dry deciduous forests are found in 86% of the grids. The scrub is registered in 11% of the grids.
With respect to herbaceous species richness, the mean in Nallamalais is 19.08 ± 10.47 with a range of 3-78 species. A total of 10,309 individuals are reported from 552 quadrats of 175 grids, mean SD for density in each grid is 58.9 ± 39.44 with a range of 5-258 individuals. The highest density among the species is recorded with Heteropogon contortus (5.82%) followed by Chrysopogon fulvus (2.9%), and Waltheria indica (2.52%). Pertaining to Importance Value Index (IVI) calculated for the herbaceous taxa encountered in the study area, Heteropogon contortus, is recorded as the dominant species (IVI=8.96) occupying 2.9% of the total herbaceous taxa. It is observed that the top ten herbaceous taxa have shared nearly 16% of the total IVI values of the study area.
The Family Importance Value (FIV) is maximum for Poaceae (86.58), followed by Fabaceae (26.9), Acanthaceae (24.03), Cyperaceae (21.9). The least FIV (0.199) was recorded for families like, Stemonaceae and Taccaceae in the study area. The A/F values of the herbaceous taxa indicate that all have contagious dispersion pattern. The species dominance index represents the mean SD of 0.9004 ± 0.064. The highest value 0.977 is observed in 57 I/10 NE4 (Gundlabrahmeswaram) followed by 0.974 in 56 L/15 SW3. Shannon-Wiener index for herbaceous taxa in 175 grids is with mean SD of 2.63 ± 0.49, the highest value being 4.104 is recorded in 57 I/10 NE4 (Gundlabrahmeswaram), followed by 3.97 in 56 L/15 SW3 (Amrabad).
In this study, 15 taxa are identified as threatened at various levels. A total of 50 other herbaceous taxa are considered threatened in the present study based on the field observations. Based on disturbance index (10-16), endemics, threatened taxa conservation priority is given for 25 grids.
SUMMARY OF POST DOCTORAL WORK
In the Post Doctoral work on “Flora and Fauna of Thummalapalli Uranium Mining Area”, the project sponsored by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, India, yielded 765 taxa comprising of 430 genera and 114 families. Of the 765 taxa, 730 are Angiosperms, 9 are Pteridophytes and 26 are Bryophytes. Pertaining to life form 128 are trees, 66 shrubs, 93 climbers and 478 are herbs. Poaceae is the largest family with 104 taxa. A total of 46 families are single tone, 16 families representing with 2 species, 9 families are with 3 species, 9 families are with 4 species and 29 families are representing with 5-25 species. A total of 26 endemic taxa are recorded in the present study, of which, six are endemic to Eastern Ghats and 20 are endemic to Peninsular India. The sampling methodology yield a total of 483 taxa belonging to 285 genera and 83 families in 360 sampled quadrates. Of these, 269 are herbs, 54 are shrubs, 63 are climbers and 97 are trees. A total of 379 animal species were recorded in the Thummalapalle Uranium Mining Area. These comprise 324 genera and 155 families. Of the 379 species, 175 are insecta (69 families; 157 genera), 30 are pisces (10 families; 21 genera), 12 are amphibia (4 families; 9 genera), 39 are reptilia (12 families; 31 genera), 101 are avian fauna (42 families; 84 genera) and 22 are mammalia (18 families; 22 genera). I have completed my post graduate degree, Master of Philosophy and doctoral degree in Botany, study entitled “AGRESTALS OF GROUNDNUT AND RICE FIELDS OF RAYALASEEMA REGION ANDHRA PRADESH, INDIA- DIVERSITY, PHYTOSOCIOLGY AND ECOPHYSIOLOGY”. I have four years research experience in plant taxonomy, biodiversity conservation, development of Botanical garden, and development of nursery by utilizing organic fertilizers and organic pesticides; maintenance of the greenhouse and poly house, ex-situ and in-situ conservation of rare, endemic, threatened, wild relatives, economically important, ornamental and medicinal plants of Eastern Ghats. Expertise in development of landscapes, home gardens, roof garden, interior decorations and avenue plantation. Expertise in collection of plants specimens, preservation and herbarium preparation and its maintenance. Climate change mitigation techniques, carbon stock estimation, anatomy, remote sensing, threatened species, invasive species, forest resources utilization, biotic and abiotic threats to Protected Areas (PA). I have three years experience as a tutor on taxonomy and ecology for post graduate students. I worked in various National/State Government Organizations and visited several institutions for literature collection and expert consultations. I have published four papers in pre-reviewed journals. ANNEXURE-II
The Significant Contribution in Wildlife Management & Ecodevelopment
Having 30 years of experience in captive care and management of wild animals and Biodiversity Research, I am currently posted at India‟s largest Tiger Reserves -the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve. I had participated in several wildlife conservation projects that include the management of the endangered species like the Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) and the Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps (Vigors), the Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) and the star tortoise (Geochelone elegans).
1. Captive Breeding and Zoo Management in Andhra Pradesh (1980-1993)
As an Asst. Curator of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Visakhapatnam, India, for twelve years, had done a commendable work in breeding of endangered fauna (in early 80‟s) like Indian crocodiles for rehabilitation in their natural habitat. This extensive research in captive breeding made inroads in rare discoveries in Animal Behavior, Breeding Biology, and Habitat Enrichment for successful management in captivity. 1. Field Study on “Incubation and Hatching of Star Tortoise (Geochelone elegans) in captivity” has contributed to the post-mating care and novel husbandry techniques in captive conditions and the protection of the male Tortoises from the post-mating husbandry inadequacies. 2. Study on “Nutritional Disorders in Captive young crocodiles” helped the captive management to save generations of captive young crocodiles from death due to a hunch back disease owing to the severe imbalance of calcium to phosphorous ratio.
2. Involvement of People in Tiger Conservation in Nagarjunasagar – Srisailam Tiger Reserve (N. S. T. R.) (1994-2000):
When several anthropogenic factors coupled with the dependency of local people on tiger habitat had an adverse impact on the population decline, specially drafted as Field Project Officer- Eco-development to tackle the situation. Equipped with skills in planning and implementation of Eco-development, have succeeded in convincing villagers fringing the forests. The poverty alleviation activities along with the “Conservation-holic” education brought a considerable change in some of the previous hostile attitude of stakeholders to strong pro-conservationists. This help in improved practices of agriculture and animal husbandry programs uplifted them above the poverty line besides reducing the pressure on the P.A. About 115 Eco-Development Committees (EDCs) were formed in and around P.A. and about 10,420 hectares of degraded forests have been regenerated. Tigers are being sighted in areas where they have never been seen close to eight years. 3. Outstanding Scientific Work / Field Work for preservation and conservation of Wildlife for the last five years (2000-2005) i) All Taxa Biodiversity Inventorization (ATBI): Laid a deep foundation for Wildlife and „Ecological Research in Nallamalais‟ – a biodiversity hot spot region of Eastern Ghats, in India. Conducted an extensive “All Taxa Biodiversity Inventorization” (ATBI) survey of species and built an enormous baseline data base to assess the status of biodiversity, immediate conservation needs, and management of natural resources for three very important Protected Areas of 6D, 6E, -a data deficient bio-geographical region of India. Published various checklists of Fauna, most of which were published in National and International journals. These studies also led to the discovery of certain new species (3), new reports (53) to the state of Andhra Pradesh and re-description of one rare species of spider.

ii) Research on Great Indian Bustard (GIB) 2001-2003):
Scientific work on „Great Indian Bustard‟, at Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary, A.P, India, has brought out many invisible problems associated with conservation and management of this highly endangered bird of Indian sub-continent. The first ever Management Plan of GIB, written by me, offers a series of practicable solutions to bring the species from the threshold of extinction from the region. The study – to be soon published in book form – Management Perspectives of the Great Indian Bustard; a case study in Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary is the outcome of the research undertaken under the Dr. Salim Ali National Wildlife Fellowship Award, 1999, sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Government of India.
4. Wildlife Planning and Management (2000-2004):
Backed with scientific studies, I have played a vital role in management planning and extension work in three very important sanctuaries of Eastern Ghats region of Andhra Pradesh. They are 1. Nagarjunasagar - Srisailam Tiger Reserve (3,500 Km2) - 2. Gundla Brahmeswaram Wildlife Sanctuary (1,194 Km2) 3. The Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary at Rollapadu, (9.37 Km2). All the three plans are under implementation and giving expected outputs as these are highly research based, integrating the traditional knowledge with technologically modern approach.
5. Efforts in Protection of Wildlife and Human property (2004-2005): Developed a novel technique of capturing and translocation of the highly sensitive Blackbuck without subjecting them to shock, injury or mortality. This innovative technique deserves to be patented. So far about 3000 Blackbuck were captured and safe translocated from crop depredated areas of Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh, India. Actively associated in successful rehabilitation of Indian star tortoises and developed a GIS based scientific protocol of monitoring them in the wild.
6. Wildlife Awareness, Motivation & Extension work (1994-2004):
Conducted several training sessions and workshops that aimed at motivating the staff, NGOs, Villagers, Eco-development committee members and other stake holders. Associated with World Bank aided A.P. Forestry Project, and organized about 1140 trainings, workshops, involving about 700 staff, 434 representatives of N.G.Os 130 employees of Govt. departments, 7580 villagers, 4826 EDC members.
Developed a specialized Environment Education package known as Psychological Transformation Through Conservation Holic (Consholic) Education is well acclaimed by the “Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Montreal, Canada” and published the concept in its CBD Technical Series No --3 under the title Assessment, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Forest Biodiversity-ISBN 92-807-2110-0. The concept was received as invaluable source of scientific and technical information at the seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), held in Montreal from 12 to 16 November.
7. Wildlife Education, Published literature & Research:
Developed several Wildlife Educational Packages, posters, brochures, and training material and is now widely used in various platforms by the professional wild lifers, N.G.Os, Forest staff, Researchers in Andhra Pradesh.
Distinction of many scientific, socio-environmental research publications on various issues in national and international journals. Most of the findings have direct bearing on husbandry, management, both in-situ and ex-situ conservation of wildlife.
