Sisters Celebrate 50 and 75 Years of Joyful SUMMER 2014 (above) Fifty years ago, Sisters Patricia Schap, Gerard Wald and Mariah Dietz were among the sisters who made perpetual monastic profession. Today, they are just as eager to respond to God’s call. Sisters Gerard, Patricia and Mariah hold their 50th Jubilee candles. Sisters Celebrate 50 and 75 Years of Joyful Service Sisters, family and friends gathered on June 14 in joyful witness to the 50th anniversary of monastic profession of Sisters Gerard Wald, Patricia Schap and Mariah Dietz. Such a blend of traditions serves to make us stronger, individually and collectively, by providing the ingredients needed for social, political and economic resilience. Throughout my life, I have had the opportunity to see and hear how membership of the Commonwealth family means so much to those living in all parts of the world, often in places that are quite remote. Advances in technology and modern media have now enabled many more people to witness and enjoy - with remarkable immediacy - this experience of Commonwealth connection, in areas such as education, medicine and conservation. Looking to the future, this connectivity means we are also aware, perhaps as never before, that wherever we live, our choices and actions affect the well-being of people and communities living far away, and in very different circumstances. For many, this awareness awakens a desire to employ our planet’s natural resources with greater care, and it is encouraging to see how the countries of the Commonwealth continue to devise new ways of working together to achieve prosperity, whilst protecting our planet.

We hope that you will enjoy your visit. 2 LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY SELF-DIRECTED GUIDE BOOK THE BIRDCAGES Construction of the first legislative buildings on this site, known as the “Birdcages,” began in 1859 and was completed in 1864. These buildings were described in the press of the time as “a mixed style of architecture, the latest fashion for Chinese pagoda, Swiss-cottage and Italian-villa fancy birdcages.” The Birdcages continued to serve as the capital buildings after British Columbia became a province in 1871. By the early 1890s, they were no longer large enough to serve the growing population’s needs. In 1892 an architectural contest was held to select a design for new Parliament Buildings. Of 65 sets of drawings submitted by competitors from across North America, those of 25-year old architect, Francis Mawson Rattenbury, were selected. This project was his first major commission and, following its successful completion, he went on to design several more landmark structures in British Columbia.
