Countdown to Diamond Jubilee

Countdown to Diamond Jubilee

Providing a few snapshots of the vast work of Mawlana Hazar Imam during his Imamat to improve the quality of life of the marginalised in the poorest parts of the world through the agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network.

compiled by Nimira Dewji

“…my responsibilities as spiritual leader and interpreter of the faith are coupled with a deep commitment to improving the quality of life. These activities are not limited to the Ismaili community but extend to those who share their lives, whether on a local, national or international scale. Our duty is to try to free people from poverty. And to me, poverty means being without shelter, without protection, without access to healthcare, education, or credit, and without hope of ever controlling one’s own destiny. This means condemning one’s children and grandchildren to unacceptable living conditions.

A voluntarist and innovative strategy is needed in order to break this chain of despair and total imprisonment.”

Mawlana Hazar Imam at the State Banquet ,Antananarivo, Madagascar November 27, 2007 Speech

1. Countdown to Diamond Jubilee: Snapshots of Imamat – 1957 to 1962

Mawlana Hazar Imam became the forty-ninth hereditary Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims on July 11, 1957 while still a student at Harvard University. He has led the community through political, economic, and social changes: from space exploration to end of colonial rule and the Cold War, the development of mass media communications, and advancements in medical technology.

1957-1962 Takhtnashini held in Dar es-Salaam (1957), Nairobi (1957), Kampala (1957), Bombay (1958), Karachi (1958), Dacca (1958).

“The huge new atomic power stations, the Sputniks and the vast throbbing machines of modern industrial life are symbols of a fresh chapter in material progress…I do not believe that we should fear material progress, nor should we condemn it. The danger is that it could become an obsession in our lives and that it could dominate our way of thinking. There is no reason why our traditions and our faith should stop us from moving with our times, nor in fact why we should not lead our fellowmen to new spheres of knowledge and learning….our traditions and our religion will always inspire the creations of our hands and minds.” Mawlana Hazar Imam, Takhtnashini, Karachi, , January 23, 1958

2. Countdown to Diamond Jubilee: Snapshots of Imamat – 1963 to 1967

During Hazar Imam’s early Imamat, the countries that were emerging from colonial rule began to revise their economic and education aspirations, developing new services to meet their needs. Consequently, many of the education and health institutions established by Imam Sultan Mahomed Shah needed to be strengthened and expanded, and new institutions were established.

“There are those who enter the world in such poverty that they are deprived of both the means and the motivation to improve their lot. Unless they can be touched with the spark which ignites the spirit of individual enterprise and determination, they will only sink into apathy, degradation and despair. It is for us, who are more fortunate to provide that spark.” Mawlana Hazar Imam Aiglemont, France, January 24, 1967

I hope….that the benefit of this hospital will spread far beyond the patients who enter its doors. It is, after all, to be a training institution, not only for doctors but also for nurses.

The Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi will naturally become the hub and focal point of the Ismaili health institutions. We plan to train not only doctors and nurses but health visitors for our own clinics throughout Pakistan….If, at a later date, we enter the field of medical research, the objectives of that research will be specifically directed to the needs of this country.” Mawlana Hazar Imam February 3, 1971

"The nature of the religious office which I hold neither requires nor is expected by the members of my community, to be an institution whose existence is restricted to spiritual leadership. "Although this University is new, it will draw inspiration from the greatest traditions of Islamic civilisation and learning..... The Charter which His Excellency the President has been gracious enough to grant the new Aga Khan University creates the first university inspired by my family since Al Azhar was founded in the Fatimid dynasty's capital of Cairo in 970, a thousand years before we laid the foundation stone of the Aga Khan Medical College on this site in 1971. I can indeed hardly express the depth of my pleasure at receiving the Charter which dignifies that college with the status of a university....My prayer is President General Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq that the university we are now building will enable presenting the Charter of the Aga Khan University many generations of the students to acquire both (AKU) to Mawlana Hazar Imam as then President knowledge and the essential spiritual wisdom needed to of AKU Shamsh Kassim Lakha applauds. The seal of Aga Khan University is a visual representation of the principles inherent in the founding of the University. The circular form of the seal with its different levels of imagery contained in concentric circles has its visual roots in the rosettes of early Islamic periods. The circle also symbolises the world and reflects the internationality of the University.

At the centre of the seal is the sun. Light is a universal symbol for the enlightenment that education provides. The light emanating from the star is also symbolic of Nur (Divine Light). The star incorporates 49 points to commemorate the University's founding by Mawlana Hazar Imam, the 49th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims. The outer ring contains an excerpt from the Qur'anic Ayat (3:103) rendered in classic Thuluth script:

And hold fast, God's favour on you: All together, by the rope For ye were enemies Which God (stretches out for you), And He joined your hearts And be not divided among yourselves, In love, so that by His grace And remember with gratitude Ye became brethren

Reflection

"My wish for the decades ahead is that you stand firmly by the principles and ethics of our faith. Wherever you are, whatever age you are, whatever you do in your lives, it is essentially important to me that the principles of our faith should be respected everyday of your lives. This is my hope and this is my prayer.

As we look ahead, the Jamat is likely to become more and more a global community. But the essence of the Jamat, the ethics of our faith, the principles which we believe in and which we seek to practice in our lives are the essence of how our community will stay united....

I hope that in the decades ahead, you will remember this occasion as one of special happiness, as I do."
