The Ayrshire Executive Director’s Comments Breeders’ always anticipate our ABA Board of Director meetings, for Association several reasons. It’s good to connect as a group and renew our Ifocus on goals, both long and short-term. The Directors meet in person twice per year. In between, we Office Staff communicate by conference calls, mail, email and telephone calls. Becky Payne, Executive Secretary We had our winter meetings at the ABA office not long ago. The Arlene Crosser, Records Coordinator committees and board of directors had some tough decisions to 1224 Alton Darby Creek Rd., Suite B make. There were frank discussions and plenty of differences of Columbus, OH 43228 opinions. We acknowledged there are things that we can do better, l (614) 335-0020 Fax: (614) 335-0023 Becky Payne there are things that we are really doing well, and there is a lot of Email: [email protected] work to be done. After everyone went home and the dust settled, I www.usayrshire.com felt energized and excited about the possibilities for the Ayrshire breed. Officers We spent considerable time evaluating finances, and not just the current financial position of Steve McDonald, President the Association. Current prices, cull prices, market trends and much more entered into the 12114 2050 E. Street, Princeton, IL 61356 discussion. We worried about how some of our members are coping with drought conditions (815) 875-3516 l Expires 2013 and lack of feed. We debated over program rules, fee schedules, capturing more registrations and transfers, and so much more, with the ultimate outcome being how we can guide the Doug Evans, Vice President Association and the Ayrshire cow to thrive in an uncertain economy. 4106 Davenport Rd., Georgetown, NY 13072 One of the greatest changes in the coming year will be with the classification program. (315) 837-4777 l Expires 2013 We will continue our current arrangement with Select Sires through June 30, 2013. We are Directors appreciative of Select Sires for their many years of service to the Ayrshire breed with our appraisal program. Please continue to schedule your classification with Select Sires for the next Director at Large six months just as you have in the past. Breeders will receive a print-out with final scores while the evaluator is on the Region 1 farm. We are very excited about this opportunity and will be announcing more details on the Henry Hardy schedule soon. Winter 2013 11 Continued from Page 14 The ABA has been working diligently to focus on increased profitability and greater production in everything we do, including our promotion and marketing efforts at national shows. Some of the reasons behind the change with the fall yearling class include: - Promote freshening heifers at a younger age - Promotes increased breeding efficiency - Increased profit - fewer days feeding prior to 1st calving - Increased profit – more milk lifetime - Increased profit – more offspring lifetime - Provides potential for more lactations on pedigrees for marketing - Type data will come more quickly from younger cows, faster return on proofs - Heifers will continue to grow after they calve - Perception of progressiveness to all in the industry – PRICELESS! We are seeing positive results with the Cow Performance Index (CPI) that was put into place a few years ago. The proof is in black and white for us to share with the world – U.S. Ayrshire cows do transmit! There are three dam and daughter combinations that rank in the top CPI list. Topping the list is Palmyra Bendig R Bonnie-ET, VG-89, with over 24,000M in her first lactation. Her dam ranks third, Palmyra Reality Bonnie-ET, VG-88, with records to 24,850M 5.0%F and a son in A.I. Both have All-American honors in their pedigrees, and are bred and owned by Palmyra Farm, Hagerstown, MD. The second cow on the list is Van-De Jerry K-T-Did Cricket, EX- 92 3E, with records to 28,640M 4.1%F and over 134,000M lifetime. Her daughter, Van-De Orkko Cricket Croquet, ranks fourth. She made over 21,000M 4.6%F in her first lactation. Both are bred by Van-De Ayrshires, Transfer, PA. “Cricket” is owned by the partnership of Lynn Lee, David Koss and Gerald Koss, Epworth, IA. “Croquet” is owned by Rob and Tiffany Hazeltine, Janesville, WI. The final dam/daughter pair in the top 10 is Palmyra Calimero R. Bailey-ET and her daughter, Palmyra Reality Bailey-ET. “Calimero Bailey” ranks fifth, is VG-89, has records to 29,374M 4.5%F anda Continued on Page 28

Winter 2013 21 Continued from Page 19 At left is a graph that summarizes the economics between conventional and accelerated (intensive growth diet) programs. The total rearing costs are similar between the programs. However the accelerated program leads earlier age at first calving as well as additional milk in first lactation. Bottom line – greater production capability = increased return on investment! This leads to early age at first calving which relates to my previous article and the benefits of calving animals before 24 months of age. This is a current hot topic but once one sits down and thinks about the theory behind it, doesn’t it make sense. Humans try to improve on many things, but Mother Nature has been doing things right for a lot longer. Ayrshire Digest cover photo from February 15, 1938 issue Ayrshire breeders may well point with pride to the fact that during 1937, their As- sociation completed one of its most suc- cessful years. Nearly one thousand more transfers than the previous year, or an increase of 11% were recorded, which indicated the strong demand for Ayrshires throughout the country. In fact, in only one previous year, had more animals been transferred. Further evidence was the fact that during the year, more than 14,000 registrations were recorded in the office of the national Lbs. Lbs. Lbs. % association, equaling those of 1936. It is further proof, dispelling the mis- conception that show ring winners do not produce. This strong dairy herd class was won by Windrow Farm with an outstand- ing group, whose actual average production was 15,453 lbs. of milk and 700 lbs. of fat.
