Members of the Traquair and Moss families have provided warm hospitality and given generously of their time to provide access to their collections and to answer questions which must have seemed endless: in particular I am deeply indebted to the grandchildren of Phoebe Traquair, Ramsay Traquair, Mrs Margaret Anderson, and Mrs Margaret Bartholomew. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Plymouth Electronic Archive and Research Library Networks, News and Communication: Political Elites and Community Relations in Elizabethan Devon, 1588-1603 by Ian David Cooper A thesis submitted to Plymouth University in partial fulfilment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Humanities and Performing Arts Faculty of Arts In collaboration with Devon Record Office September 2012 In loving memory of my grandfathers, Eric George Wright and Ronald Henry George Cooper, and my godfather, David Michael Jefferies ii Copyright Statement This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with its author and that no quotation from the thesis and no information derived from it may be published without the author’s prior consent. iii Abstract Ian David Cooper ‘Networks, News and Communication: Political Elites and Community Relations in Elizabethan Devon, 1588-1603’ Focusing on the ‘second reign’ of Queen Elizabeth I (1588-1603), this thesis constitutes the first significant socio-political examination of Elizabethan Devon – a geographically peripheral county, yet strategically central in matters pertaining to national defence and security. A complex web of personal associations and informal alliances underpinned politics and governance in Tudor England; but whereas a great deal is now understood about relations between both the political elite and the organs of government at the centre of affairs, many questions still remain unanswered about how networks of political actors functioned at a provincial and neighbourhood level, and how these networks kept in touch with one another, central government and the court. -
English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records
T iPlCTP \jrIRG by Lot L I B RAHY OF THL UN IVER.SITY Of ILLINOIS 975.5 D4-5"e ILL. HJST. survey Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2012 with funding from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign http://archive.org/details/englishduplicateOOdesc English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records compiled by Louis des Cognets, Jr. © 1958, Louis des Cognets, Jr. P.O. Box 163 Princeton, New Jersey This book is dedicated to my grandmother ANNA RUSSELL des COGNETS in memory of the many years she spent writing two genealogies about her Virginia ancestors \ i FOREWORD This book was compiled from material found in the Public Record Office during the summer of 1957. Original reports sent to the Colonial Office from Virginia were first microfilmed, and then transcribed for publication. Some of the penmanship of the early part of the 18th Century was like copper plate, but some was very hard to decipher, and where the same name was often spelled in two different ways on the same page, the task was all the more difficult. May the various lists of pioneer Virginians contained herein aid both genealogists, students of colonial history, and those who make a study of the evolution of names. In this event a part of my debt to other abstracters and compilers will have been paid. Thanks are due the Staff at the Public Record Office for many heavy volumes carried to my desk, and for friendly assistance. Mrs. William Dabney Duke furnished valuable advice based upon her considerable experience in Virginia research. Mrs .Olive Sheridan being acquainted with old English names was especially suited to the secretarial duties she faithfully performed. -

Please wear your mask throughout the service (except when receiving communion). Together with many communities in the Anglican communion, we begin a new liturgical season today, the “Season of Creation.” You may notice some new prayers and service music, developed by lay and clergy liturgists to highlight our responsibility to become ever more faithful stewards of the earth and its creatures. If you are interested in learning more about this or other liturgies, you might check out https://www.episcopalcommonprayer.org/, created by the Task Force on Prayer Book and Liturgical Revision. Children are always welcome to participate fully in worship, as they are able and interested. Busy boards, service guides, and books are available in a basket in the Narthex to help your child participate with you in worship. Our Minister to Children & Youth, Zoe, will be glad to help you nd the best options for your children. The former work of the writer, entitled " Hall Marks on Gold and Silver Plate," has been so extensively patronised by the public as to call for six editions since the date of its first appearance in I860, supplying a most important aid to Ama- teurs and Collectors of Old Plate, enabling them to ascertain the precise date of manufacture by the sign manual of the Goldsmiths' Company, stamped upon it when sent to be assayed. That it has been generally appreciated is evident from the fact that it is to be found in the hands of every leading Goldsmith in the United Kingdom, as well as Amateurs and Possessors of family plate.
