Tara Wink. Archival Collection Development Policies: A Study of their Content and Collaborative Aims. A Master's paper for the M.S. in L.S. degree. April, 2010. 58 pages. Advisor: Christopher Lee Collection development is an important aspect of archival theory and work; however, few studies have looked at collection development in practice. It has also been suggested that collection development policies and plans can help to limit competition by including discussions of collaborative agreements. This paper describes a study of online archival collection development policies to determine what these documents contain and whether or not collaboration and competition are discussed. This study searched the websites of 334 repositories’ to identify online collection development policies. Available policies were then coded using the 26 elements defined in Faye Phillips’ 1984 guidelines for archival collection development policies. Available discussions of collaboration within the policies were also coded. The results suggest that repositories are using a variety of materials when writing policies and collaborative agreements in policies are the exception rather than the rule. Headings: Archives. Thiago Henrique Bragato Barros ([email protected]) and João Batista Ernesto de Moraes ([email protected]) Universidade Estadual Paulista, Marília SP Brazil The Discursive Construction of Archival Science: Conceptual Foundations of a Discipline in Construction Abstract: This work outlines a theoretical background established in Archival Science based mainly on discourse analysis as a key discipline to understand which the differences are and points of concep- tual commonality in the area. Uses the French Discourse Analysis as a principle with a theoretical and methodological framework to typify the archive as a discursive practice defined by their historical aspects of its institutional junctures. The study of discourse helps to understand how certain linguistic formations construct the discourse, concerned mainly with the context in which the text was pro- duced. This analysis take place from manuals and treatises of Archival Science produced during the development of discipline and regarded as grounds for discipline. We analyzed the Manual of an Arc- hival Arrangement and Description (vor Handleiding van het ordenen in bescheijven archieven) of Muller, Feith, and Fruin (Ed.1 1898). Another work considered is the Manual of Archive Administra- tion Including the Problems of War Archives and Archive a Making (1 Ed. 1922) and some of late works of Sir Hillary Jenkinson and finally analyzed the work of Theodore R. Schellenberg some as- pects of his vast bibliography. -

Harrell Health Sciences Library [email protected] Maureen Williams is Reference Librarian and Coordinator of Information Literacy at Neumann University, [email protected] Collecting reference statistics is an important facet of academic librarianship. Having accurate, shareable data about the services a library provides is key to understanding the needs of users and highlighting the importance of the library within the overall institution. While many libraries collect reference statistics on paper, gathering this data using an electronic statistics system is an efficient and customizable way to track and analyze reference service trends. By detailing Neumann University Library and Harrell Health Sciences Library’s experiences with two different but equally effective systems, this article will explore the complexities of implementing, customizing, and analyzing the data from an electronic reference statistics system. The authors also discuss challenges encountered and offer recommendations and best practices for others wishing to explore electronic reference statistic collection. Introduction Librarians have always explored different measures to demonstrate their worth and the value they provide. Collecting statistics about the type and volume of reference transactions is a long-standing practice. Traditionally this was accomplished using paper-based collection systems, which require data entry or manual calculation in order to review trends, and typically provide a minimalistic picture. Introduction Archives -- collections of paper, books, and other substrates of information (some might say “memory”) and the institutions that house and manage these objects -- are subjects of a renewed and vital current critical historical interest. Archives, broadly conceived, have been used for the writing of history since historical writing began, and archival materials and institutions are an integral part of the making not just of history but of the modern historical profession as well. The historian’s relationship with the archive has been long and varied and described in a broad range of terms, as being as unproblematic as “bread and butter” (Giles 1996) or as driven by erotic, fetishistic desire (Smith 1998). It is fitting that historians should turn their scholarly attentions to these depositories that have been the object, if not the subject, of so much historical work. -

Outreach Activities for Librarian Liaisons
FOR YOUR ENRICHMENT Barry Trott, Editor The role of the library liaison is evolving as user needs and li- brary resources are changing. In this column, Isabel D. Silver, director of Instruction and Academic Outreach at the George Outreach A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida describes a new model for academic liaisons that can help to increase Activities for engagement with various library user communities.—Editor he academic librarian role has been identified by the following titles, depending on the intended em- Librarian Liaisons phasis of the role: bibliographer, selector, subject specialist, subject librarian, or liaison.1 All of these Ttitles have been used at the University of Florida libraries at one time or another, and many of them have been used simul- taneously. The academic “library liaison,” “liaison librarian,” or “librarian liaison” title is increasingly used by institutions to reflect a refocusing from collections to user services.2 This role has been evolving ever since the 2001 RUSA Committee report, which identified five core “liaison” activities, largely revolving around the traditional collection development re- sponsibilities by subject specialists or departmental librarians in an academic atmosphere of clearly-defined disciplines. ARL Cataloger Librarian Roles and Responsibilities Now and In the Future Abstract This article details the results of a 2011 study of cataloger librarians’ changing roles and responsibilities at academic Association of Research Libraries. The tudys participants, cataloging department heads, report that cataloger librarian roles are expanding to include cataloging more electronic resources and local hidden collections in addition to print materials. They ra e also creating non-MARC metadata. The increased usage of vendor products and services is also affecting the roles of cataloger librarians at some institutions. The ra ticle explores what skills cataloger librarians will need in the future and how libraries are providing training for that future. -

Is the information stored in a secure place (be it in servers or stacks)? Is there guaranteed long-term access to the records, manuscripts, or data? How do we ensure the authenticity and reliability of the information we keep? How do we use archival records to hold those in positions of power accountable? What are the ways that marginalized groups are represented in historical sources? What access systems should be in place to maximize the discoverability of the items in our collection? Archivists answer these questions in particular ways and those specific perspectives and ideas that inform their actions are what we will study during the term. As a class, we shall examine fundamental theories and practices as well as the essential principles and standards that archivists apply in designing and implementing strategies for the preservation and long-term access of information. We will also pay attention to the changing informational, organizational, societal, and technological landscapes and consider how those changes are affecting archival practices, the information and preservation professions, and the implementation of foundational archival ideas. -
