Fr. Varkey Kattarath Ref. No. VC-G-130/2018 July 10, 2018 From Fr. Dr. Joseph Erambil VC Postulator, Cause of Canonization of Fr. Varkey Kattarath Vincentian Generalate Edappally, Kochi 682024. To His Excellency Mar Jacob Manathodath Apostolic Administrator Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly Sub: Initiation of the Cause of Canonization of Very Rev. Fr. Varkey Kattarath Your Excellency Mar Jacob Manathodath, Very Rev. Fr. Varkey Kattarath VC, the Founder of Vincention Congregation and a saintly person, who lived as ‘a Parish Priest in action and an ascetic at heart’ was ‘a great ascetic hermit’. This saintly person who was loved by the people of all castes and creeds was called ‘Valliachan’ (elderly priest) of the natives of Thottakam, Vaikom. He served many parishes as parish priest in a very praiseworthy and exemplary manner. He was the Vicar of Vaikom Parish for the long thirteen years. Many people, irrespective of caste and creed came even from far-off places seeking advice, 24« 2020 | Vol. 63 | No. 3 | instructions and consoling directions. This great person possessed a marvellous personality combining the leadership qualities of a priest and the exemplary virtuous life of the evangelical counsels. He also served the Adoration Congregation from 1916 first, as the Chaplain of Adoration Convent, Champakulam and later, as the Common Chaplain (1923) of Adoration Congregation till 1927. Fr. Kattarath made the temporary profession in the Vincentian Congregation on July 21, 1929 for one year and then renewed it. On July 19, 1931, he made perpetual profession with a special permission of Mar Augustine Kandathil, the then Archbishop of Ernakulam Archdiocese and became the first perpetually professed member of the Vincentian Congregation. Rev. Fr. Varkey was called to the eternal rest on 24 October 1931 and his body is buried in the tomb made in the church at Thottakom. He still remains as an ever living memory in the minds of people and hundreds of people are participating in the death anniversary celebration every year. Many people have been coming to his tomb for spiritual consolation and seeking his intercession in their trials and tribulations. In October 2001, Rev. Fr. George Arackel VC the then Superior General approached His Beatitude Mar Varkey Cardinal Vithayathil, the then Major Archbishop to obtain imprimatur for the prayer to be circulated among the faithful for promoting devotion to Rev. Fr. Varkey Kattarath and for raising him to sainthood and obtained the same. Many people are receiving favours from God through the intercession of Rev. Fr. Varkey Kattarath. We receive many such letters from the people. During these 16 years the members of Vincentian Congregation have been praying to discern the will of God for this Cause and realized that | Vol. 63 | No. 3 | 2020 »25 this is the high time for the initiation of the Cause of Canonization of our founder, Rev. Fr. Varkey Kattarath. So, we request Your Excellency for initiation of the Cause of Canonization of Very Rev. Fr. Varkey Kattarath, so that his sanctity and intercession may be propagated to the whole Church. Enclosed, please find the life, heroic virtues and intercessory power of Rev. Fr. Varkey Kattarath, the founder of the Vincentian Congregation in view of initiating the Canonization Process of Very Rev. Fr. Varkey Kattarath. Yours Sincerely in our Lord, Fr.
