CLUB PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

2nd in the club championship is a fantastic effort and with the dominance of Burwood over the past 15-20 years coming second is like coming first. Congratulations to Burwood on their 6 consecutive Club Championship and congratulations to Epping for our highest placing in a Club Championship in decades. I said it last year, we have been there or there about for a while now and this year our first grade team grew with maturity and strength to place us in a much higher position as much of your positioning on the Club Championships is based around 1st and 2nd grade performances. Well done Michael McKeough and the 1st squad for a much improved year. Looking forward to seeing what you can do next season.

2nd grade were once again there as they are every year with AB bowling and bowling like he does and with Morgs forming an awesome attack, seeing them once again make the finals but being halted before the big dance again. Well done AB and the 2nd grade boys you deserve more.

Third grade surprised many of us this season. They far and away exceeded all expectations, making the GF but came up against an undefeated Georges River team that were simply too good for third grade. Hard as it is to get so close and fall at the final hurdle once again for the boys you can look back and know you gave it you’re all this year. Well done Howesy and your charges on a great season.

Our 4th grade struggled early in the season. It was a development year for them with many young Epping Junior Bulls making their debuts for the Senior Bulls. This is an important step for our club. With 4x under 15/16 teams this year, we saw some of that young talent come through giving them the experience and understanding of what playing senior cricket is all about. We are extremely excited about what next season holds for 4th grade with many young talented kids entering the senior ranks. Big thanks to Mark Henning, Sean Thompson and Chris Creer for leading the team this year as tough as it was.

5th grade, or our Tim Creer Cup team, too is a very young squad full of Epping Juniors. Mick Sedgers once again took this team under his wing and there can be no bigger role model to play under than Mick. These kids are playing under a future Shires Legend and our club is so much better off with him at the helm. Whilst they did not make the semis it too blooded many young players with plenty of Under 16 backing up on a Sunday to play senior cricket. Great effort boys in a comp that is quite lop sided and full of independent teams which upsets the fabric of that competition. Well done Mick and thank you for what you do in our club with these young men - we a greatly appreciative of your time and effort you put into the TCC team.

It was disappointing to see the Under 24s under perform this season. A team of first graders we were outplayed by younger less experience teams. Honestly I think we thought we just had to turn up and go through the motions and we would win. Sadly we had our pants pulled down and then back up over our heads. These young men know how to play cricket but you need to know how to play hard cricket and adapt to the changing pace of the game. This is changing not only in 24s but also other grades. When we are in a position of none for bugger all we still go out and try and smack the ball to boundary instead of building or grafting out an innings. To be bowled out in 50 over matches is a cardinal sin and should never happen. I know you know this and its nothing you haven’t heard but I and the club place so much emphasis on our Young Bulls so when they come up short we need to step back and take stock of what it is we need to do and where we are heading. This is no mark on Anthony’s leadership. It is a mark on the team as whole. Tones knows what to do - he needs the rest of the squad to buy into it and play for each other and this club. I once again expect massive things from this team next season and I know they can deliver and look forward to the dream being realised.

Our committee, as it does year in year out, works very hard to make this club what it is and I want to thank you all, Anthony Boorer, Mick Sedgers, Graeme Baird, Michael McKeough, Nic Wilson, Patrick Balzen, Mark Bruce, Mike Wirth, Tony Azize and Justin Bradley for your efforts. Our club is going in the right direction under this group of people and there is plenty of spirit and heart sitting around the table and so I guarantee you we will have success soon as this team of people expect and drive it. Thank you all for effort once again this season. Lastly thank you to what he likes to be known as the Chairman in social circles Mike Wirth for being the Chairman of Selectors this season. God knows you make it interesting.

There have been many wonderful performances this season. We were on track to break the record for the most centuries in a season however I think we finished just short with 15. Massive effort one I haven’t seen before in

Annual Report Season 2017-18 3 our club. Each week batsman were chalking up the runs and it was fantastic to see. Congratulations to a major award winners Anuj Nuthalakanti for Cricketer of the Year, Ben O’Connell for the Phil Dunnicliff Award as Under 24s Player of the ear a fantastic season from both of them. The grade medal winners were Dave Gilbert Medal – Chris Stefan, Gavin Robertson Medal – Brad Morgan, Ron Payne Medal – Nick Birrell, Tim Creer Medal – Mark Henning, Graeme Baird Medal – Naman Ganjekar, Ian Wheatley Medal (under 24s) – Ben O’Connell, and Gary Bensley Medal – Mark Henning. All were deserved winners and each player had an outstanding season, congratulations.

Once again this season saw a group of young 15 and 16 year old Bulls play senior cricket. Much of the Junior Club’s success comes down to the President Derek McCarthy and it was for this he was awarded the Graeme Knightly Clubman of the Year Award. Derek puts so much time and effort in to the Juniors, next season we will be flooded with talented young kids playing for the Bulls and what’s more he has been instrumental in Epping Bulls Juniors having two girls’ teams this season and having success. The senior club is in a very strong position when our Juniors are strong and going very well. Well done to all the Juniors and we look forward to seeing you all at the Senior Bulls next season and big thanks to Derek for all your efforts making the Juniors a strong force in the NDCA

I wish to acknowledge our sponsors and this season saw the “Biso”, Eastwood Businessmen’s Club continued their support of the club with a substantial increase in financial support. Once again I thank Nic Wilson and Anthony Azize for helping maintain that strong relationship and we thank the Biso for the continued support of the Bulls. We had a new sponsor in Di Jones Heath Dockery Real estate support the club. Thank you Heath for your support of not only the senior club but the Junior club as well

Whilst we came second to Burwood in the Club Championship, they once again took our cup away from us. It hurts to see it stay with Burwood but the tide is changing and the wave which is Epping is building. Each year I ask for more and this year is no different. We have the foundations of a fantastic club and it was no more evident than this year when we hosted the back to Epping day and we scooped the pool in all four grades and sung the club song with Crushers’ young boy there. It was sung with pride passion and heart .The look on the past players’ faces when you bellowed it out across North Epping that night marked that this club sits in a pretty good position both on and off the field. Let’s take the pride and go that next step and bring in some silverware. It’s going to take more from you. It’s going to require more commitment. We as a committee are striving for this and will back all the players in coaching and our facilities. Reward not only us and the past players with a premiership but yourselves with it as we all know we deserve it. The bridesmaids of Shires are about to wear a new type of formal wear. This is our year. The Year of the Bull

Thank you for your support of me as President. Thank you for your friendship and thank you for sharing in the passion we all have for this club. I look forward to next season with so much anticipation and our time is here

1ST GRADE TEAM REPORT

This season was a significant improvement and showed the development of our extremely young squad. We worked exceptionally hard for each other in every contest this year. We won more games than we have won in the last two seasons combined and never gave up in any game. However, unfortunately we fell heartbreakingly short of what would have been a debut first grade finals appearance for the majority of the team, but we can be extremely pleased with the progress we made as a team this season.

With just 4 losses this season we were leapfrogged in the last two rounds due to some dodgy declarations and a few other things that went against us. This was a massive learning experience for us as a team. As much as it hurt to not be a part of the finals we cannot be bitter but look to find ways to be better to ensure that our finals berth is completely in our control next season.

As first grade captain our grit, determination, unity and pride for the Bulls is something that makes me very proud. This was without a doubt our biggest strength this season. Even when our skills may have let us down our ability to keep each other in the fight won us many games. We defended low totals and chased down high scores, and that is what good teams do. We already have the best culture of any team in first grade and if we can improve on the basics of our game, as well as the one percenters such as fitness, and running between the etc. I have no doubt 2018/19 will be a fantastic year for the Bulls.

Keishav Muralietharan: He was our leading run scorer for the second consecutive year, Keish backed up his breakout year with two fantastic tons. Keish improved his shot selection and temperament this year to be able to show more consistent performances. This mental strength that he continues to develop will be extremely beneficial in the years to come. Unfortunately, he moves to Canberra next season, but we wish him all the best.

Ben O’Connell: BOC had an indifferent year in first grade this year, as he got many starts with the bat but just couldn’t go on with it. He didn’t get the wickets he would have liked but always posed as a wicket taking threat and if he can improve his consistency, watch out. His all-round ability has amazing potential and he can be a match winner with both bat and ball if he puts his mind to it. His energy and passion for the Bulls keeps the team ticking. He is one of the hardest workers in the club and I’m sure if he works hard again, then this upcoming season will be his best yet.

Nic Wilson: Wilso unfortunately didn’t get the runs he was after this season. He showed glimpses of his best, getting a few starts, however, continued to find different ways to get himself out. His leadership and advice in the slips is always beneficial and he took some very important catches this year. With a big offseason, which has already started with a fitness campaign I am sure this year Nic will be leading from the front with the bat and be getting some big runs.

Tim Hood: Timmy was brought into the first-grade team not just for his batting ability, but for his experience. Tim was providing those consistent performances averaging over 40 for us batting at number 4 that we were looking for, up until he pulled his calf against Balmain South Sydney. Unfortunately for us he then missed the next few games and it was a constant niggle for the rest of the season. We all hope to see Hoody back for another year and back to full fitness.

Anthony Azize: Tones didn’t have as good as a season as he would have liked, in what was his first full year of first grade. With a highest score of 38 and an average of 20 it is clear that once again not going on with starts was the key for him this year. After being the standout the year before in training and fitness to his own admission he didn’t give himself the best chance to perform and already this off season I have seen that he will not be letting that happen again. His passion and love for the Bulls is second to none and I can’t wait to see what that brings the Bulls this season.

Mitch Horrocks: Mitch didn’t have his best year with the bat but was tasked with the job of being our wicketkeeper for the first half of the season. It is a task that he wishes he didn’t have to do but he did for the team and I can’t thank him enough for that. His glove work was generally sound and due to his natural athleticism performed above and beyond for someone who hasn’t done much keeping before. He left us to complete his amazing project in Uganda providing clean water and we wish him all the best.

Annual Report Season 2017-18 11

Josh Kew: Joshy was one that after a very strong start to the season in twos forced my hand and made me pick him on his plethora of runs, not just from this year but his consistency over the last couple. Josh plays with energy and waits for the bowlers to bowl to him and all this is held together by his temperament. Although he did not get the runs he would have liked in ones he had multiple key innings to get us over the line. His glove work was also extremely valuable after collecting a total of 20 catches for the season, which is a fantastic effort. Once again, we thank you enough Josh for putting your hand up to keep.

Karl Stuart: Karlos was in my eyes the biggest improver of the season. He developed the consistency in his bowling, while still being able to produce the unplayable deliveries. His batting also came to the fore with his maiden first grade fifty in a match winning performance at Lindfield. With a full preseason this year I look forward to being able to see how good Karlos can go. If he gets fit there’s no reason Karlos couldn’t have a 40 wicket 300 run season next year.

Chris Steffan: Steffo was our Dave Gilbert Medallist this year and deservedly so. His bowling has improved out of sight in the last couple of seasons, being able to make the batsman play and getting up on the fuller length. The amount of catches taken in the cordon off him is testament to that. His batting is ever reliable, and I hope he continues to work at it and his first fifty is not far away. His energy and passion with the ball is amazing and if he continues to work on his consistency and ability to work out a batsman, anything is possible for next year.

James Hulton-Harrop: Jimmy was an amazing fit for the Bulls both as a player and culturally. His extremely consistent leg spin was extremely valuable to have, and he was able to tie down an end on a regular basis. Although he probably didn’t get the wickets he would have liked he had a stellar season doing his job for the team. His batting and fielding efforts were also underrated including his effort in the last match of the season to help secure us the win. Good luck for the future mate and you are welcome back anytime.

Hugh Fisher: Hughy didn’t have as good of a season as the year before, but still did his job well in what was a season marred by niggling injuries unfortunately. His ability to hurry up the batsmen and bowl the tough lines is what makes H so valuable. His competitiveness and passion for the Bulls makes him the cricketer he is, and we all hope no matter what he does next year, that he can be fully fit and firing.

Thank you must also go to Anuj, Cam Court, Cal De Silva, Anthony Boorer and Brad Morgan that played and contributed to the Epping First Grade Team this year. It is the highest level that we can get to as cricketers in Shires cricket, and I have been privileged to lead each and every one of you this year and I hope there is more to come.

It was an amazing effort from all Bulls to get second position in the club championship for the first time in over 30 years. We are not far away but the consistency and hard work is the only way we can reach our ultimate goal of winning the club championship. To reiterate what I said in last year’s report, it is so important that as a club we all help each other to improve and try and play as high a grade as possible to push each other. The elusive premiership and club championship aren’t far away but we have to earn it!

Up the Bulls!!!

Cheers, Mick McKeough

2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

Another season bites the Dust!!! Yet another season that promised so much but in the end delivered no return again. In my third season as captain for me this season was about winning that elusive premiership and anything less than that was a disappointment in my eyes. That seems such a harsh thing to say for a team that finished the home and away season second on the table but that is the reality of a side that had what it took to go all the way but went missing come finals time. The season started with one of only two losses to the perennially strong Burwood side where we were slow out of the blocks for the start of the season and the captain really made the wrong call at the toss of the coin and in a one day game we were behind the eight ball all game.

Round 2 saw us plunder plenty of runs on one of many roads at North Epping with Scotty Bennett scoring 142 and Josh Kew 108 to lead the way and from there the bowlers did the job with Morgs leading the way with 4.

The runs kept coming in the next two rounds with new boy Anuj blowing us away with his 146 on debut in second grade and Billy taking his maiden 5 fa V North West Sydney while runs and wickets were shared V Mounties Round 5 was a fantastic game and one where we started to show our muscle as a side and show us as a force in the competition. At that time Auburn were top of the table and for us to beat them outright sent a message. At 0-57 in the first innings Auburn were looking good but that quickly changed and we rolled them for 141. We were out of the blocks quickly with the bat thanks largely to a Nathan Ross 116 against his old club and a Josh Kew 89 backing him up. This left us some time to have a crack at the auburn batting line up again and we made the most of it rolling them for 161 leaving us with 42 to get off 6 overs where Anuj did the damage getting us home with time to spare. A fantastic win. Anuj was also able to complete another personal milestone in this game where he collected a hat trick with the final two wickets of the first innings and the final wicket of the second innings with the bouncer doing the damage in two of the three balls. Unfortunately after such a great win everybody again decided to go on holidays or get suspended leaving us short and leading us to our second loss of the season V Warringah where we were simply outplayed by a better side on the day.

Round 7 saw us taking on an in form Balmain South Sydney team and they were out of the blocks with a great opening stand they lost their first wicket at 101 and we thought we were in for a long day on a flat wicket. As the good teams do we fought back and with two superb runouts from the man we came to know and the run out king Peter Colbourne, the game turned on its head we rolled them 149. A Nic Wilson century saw us secure the points with ample help from Pat Balzen (57) and the man, the myth Cam Court (65). In the second innings we saw what the BSS batting line up was capable of and the game fizzled out.

The Christmas break came and went and with a game so close to New Year players were thin on the ground. Thank god for a quality ring in with Ian Wheatley (78no) and the return of Calum De Silva (21 rh). I felt we bowled well to keep them to 173 but we batted poorly and we were lucky to get home with runs from the ring in and the recently returned that spent time at the crease and helped get us home.

Pennant Hills were easily disposed of in round 9 and in round 10 we came up with a pour batting performance in the first innings to lose first innings to Lindfield. But in true Epping style we fought back with the ball to only be down by 26 runs after the first innings and from there the form with the bat returned and were able set a solid total for them to chase and we did the job from there with the ball. 9 wickets from Brad Morgan was the big reason for our fight back with the ball while with the bat Mitch Horrock’s 49 and 54 helped us get a score on the board in the first innings and set up a total while Cam Court chimed in with the worlds luckiest 72.

Round 10 saw runs and wickets shared in an easy victory over Roseville and in Round 12 it was the same same but a little different where we only just snuck past the 72 required for victory but from there the tail wagged to get us to 204 with Peter Colbourne (56) and the tail enders in Nick Birrell (48 somehow) and Sharan Rajendran (29) doing the damage.

The Final round saw us outright Mac Uni to sneak into second place. A victory that never seemed to be on but miraculously came about. Morgs again was the main man with the ball with another 9 wicket match while Hugh Fisher got 5 for the match including a hat trick in the second innings to set up the outright win. 60 from fill in skipper Pat Balzen was the best with the bat.

Finals time and I felt we had the team to do the job. Our Quarter final was against Lindfield and again our batting went missing and we struggled to 136 with some lower order resilience helping to get us there. Cam Court with 54

Annual Report Season 2017-18 15 was the best with the bat. We knew they were vulnerable with the bat but with a low score we couldn’t afford any mistakes. As a quality bowling unit we got the job done rolling them for 116 and not even allowing them a sniff of victory. We navigated the second innings well with the bat and a home semi-final against Warringah beckoned.

This semi-final was a war of attrition. We lost the toss which was a crucial blow. We were asked to have a bat and from there through a combination of good bowling and poor batting we were in the shit at 7/61. We had to dig deep where runs were hard to come by but we did and Callum De Silva (42) and AB(28) were able to spend time at the crease along with Brad Morgan(16) and build a defendable total. All out 144 in 91.1 overs. Slow and below par but something to defend on a day where the ball swung for the most part of the day. We came out firing with the ball with and early wicket on day one and another 50/50 that didn’t go our way we were confident.

Day Two and there was no swing early but when it came we made inroads only for it to disappear and we found ourselves working hard for the breakthrough. The going was hard and slow but we were making inroads as they were as well. I said at the start of the day with the low score on the board we had to be flawless and as so happens in these games where a dropped catch or missed run out can be the difference. Unfortunately for us we missed one of each and while we fought tooth and nail we fell short and they passed our score 8 wickets down. Morgs was as he was all season the pick of the bowlers with 5 wickets.

Alas another season done with another semi-final loss, something I am sick of saying. It seems funny to be disappointed in what was a great season but it just wasn’t what we should or could have achieved. I have to give a shout out to Morgs who was the leading wicket taker in the whole of second grade and took 45 wickets for the season. The man is such a tenacious cricketer and has that never give up attitude. The depth of players to draw from was a big reason for the team’s success this season and with guys like Billy McCarthy, Nick Ford, Nick Birrell, Hayden Doria and James Mallett coming through and on the cusp of second grade there is plenty to look forward too. Peter Colbourne showed us all how to field with some great runouts with some of them being game changing and he also made some valuable contributions with the bat and ball.

Eventual Cricketer of the Year Anuj Nuthalakanti had a great season with contributions with both the bat and the ball. Josh Kew was our form batsman early in the season before a well-deserved call up to first grade while centuries also from Scott Bennett and Nathan Ross and some healthy contributions from Cam Court and Pat Balzen were great efforts. Having Callum De Silva back with the gloves from the halfway mark of the season was a big in for us and he adds so much to our side with his keeping but also with the odd contribution with the bat.

Two hat tricks in second grade in the one season is a first in my time at the club. Sharan Rajendran continues to develop and showed some cricketing smarts to take some off his wickets. Justin Bradley was a constant back up to myself and Morgs with the ball along with Kulwant Congrats also to Brad Morgan who was the winner of the player’s player. A well-deserved honour after a fantastic season.

As always playing with the Bulls is always enjoyable and we all had fun especially considering we were winning most of our games. I said this exact thing last year but here it is again

“A little note for the rest of the club. Attitude to training is what is going to take us to the next level. So many guys have sporadic attendance at training and a poor work ethic towards improving their game and it shows. We are at the fork in the road guys. If we as a club are going to take our games and the club to the next level and actually get a club championship we as a club and playing group need to commit to playing a full season and attending to training to be the very best players we can be so we can be the best teams we can be. If everyone commits and invests in the journey I know we will get there and when we do get there it will be so sweet.”

A special Thanks to the Bulls committee especially Matt, Sedge and Rowd. Many thanks to the other captains in Howesy, Macca, Sean/Mark, Sedge and the chairman Wirthy. It is hard at times but I think we all worked well together without too much angst.

Cheers AB

3RD GRADE TEAM REPORT

Another season with all the promise in the world but only delivered a hangover on a Monday morning. Finishing the season in 3rd with only 2 points splitting the top three sides, the boys’ efforts throughout the season warranted this position. Although our performance in the grand final may say otherwise, what was most impressive this season was we finally learnt how to bat, posting scores of 250+ on numerous occasions. The highlight for me this season was beating Burwood not once, but twice, humiliating them in the first round and then knocking them out in the semi-final (times are changing).

If there’s one thing I want the boys to take away from this season its finals experience. Realise just how tough it is to win a premiership and know the sort of cricket you need to play for all 3 finals matches to be able to take home the title. to reflect, why not share some of the qualities that made this 3rd grade side duly named The Headcase XI.

Dylan Shaw – spends most of his time on a never ending gap year and decides to give up an Aussie summer to spend it in an igloo in Antarctica.

Stuart Henry – his vocabulary consists of only three words, WAIT, YES, NO.

James Mallett – after yet another failure in 2s he decided to use his King’s education to fake an injury to ensure he could qualify for 3s.

Billy McCarthy – young gun who thinks he’s good at cricket until he discovers alcohol and girls.

Nicholas Ford – seems to always have candy on him and spends more time on car sales looking at white vans then hitting the second ball of his grand final innings.

Brendan Sedgers – will most likely retell his Warringah knock on infinite occasions.

Brendan Ford – after been declared on and robbed of a hundred, he then had to go and keep for 6 overs, standing next to the bloke who had declared on him, as we proceeded to not take a wicket… he didn’t say a word for those 6 overs.

Hayden Doria – if he stopped having lunch dates with his mum and focused on his cricket he might actually be good.

James Howes – nothing makes this bloke happier than declaring on blokes about to reach hundreds, is always grumpy and questions why he plays the game during every batting performance. Has mastered keeping players out of the spotlight by dropping catches off them so there figures look rubbish.

Peter Kew – ensures his position as the dominant alpha is felt by every opening batsman by smiling at them after yet another play and miss.

Nicholas Birrell – not sure what’s more dangerous for society, his effort ball or another match on tinder. Has planned the death of Howesy on 4 occasions.

Time to go one better lads!

Annual Report Season 2017-18 23

4TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

To use one of the most used sporting clichés, this season can be best described as a season ‘of two halves’. My first full season as captain, joined by Co-captain Mark Henning, the first half of the season was significantly affected by unavailability’s throughout the grades. The second half of the season suggested that when the team becomes more consistent, we are a genuine premiership chance in seasons to come.

With the first win of the season not coming until round 7, there would be little to cheer about before Christmas for the mighty fourth grade. Throughout this tough period for the team, Co-captain Mark Henning stood tall and was an absolute stand out in the first half of the season. Mark consistently top scored during our consistently low scoring batting performances. He continued this form in the second half of the season. This led to Mark winning our player of the year. Despite this, there were some promising signs shown from the younger members of the team – Matt Henning, Ethan Colmar, Khartik Khetapaul and many more showed that they were definitely up to the challenge of succeeding in senior cricket.

Round 7 saw the first win of the season, and a convincing one at that against Souths. A mature batting performance from the top order saw us exceed 300 for the first time of the season. Chris Creer wound the clock back, while JD plundered the bowlers from the other end which resulted in magnificent centuries for each of them. This was the match that kick started our season.

The post-Christmas period saw us win four from our remaining six matches. During this period, the team was able to stay relatively consistent, comprising a great mix of experienced players and young exciting juniors. All senior players stood up at some stage throughout the post-Christmas period: Crispy, JD, Danger and Mark solidified our top order batting. Navin experienced his best season with the bat and acted as the yoyo for the team (Batting anywhere from 1-7), being the selfless team player he is. With the ball, the oriental express (Kevin), Chuckie and Rahul were at times simply too good for the opposition. Kevin really hit his straps towards the back end of the season, resulting in a return of 23 wickets from his final 5 games of the season. Youngsters Ethan Colmar and Ryan Drake bowled some unbelievable spells throughout the season. Their endless work at training that I witnessed throughout the season is a testament to them as cricketers and young men. Ethan in particular would bowl at training for hours without a break and would be constantly seeking advice from the senior bowlers at the club. There was no more deserving player of wickets in fourth grade this year.

It has been an absolute pleasure to captain alongside Mark this year. A lot of fun was had and competitive cricket was played. I have no doubt that the second half of the year is a sign of more things to come for the mighty fourth grade team. Making the top 6 will be the goal for the 2018/19 season. I hope all the players come back from last season and are as hungry as I am for a premiership.

Cheers, Thomo

Annual Report Season 2017-18 27

5TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

How do you finish 6th and not make the quarter finals? More on that later.

How do you call on some of our Juniors to fill in and they become the mainstays of the team for the season?

Did you hear the one about the 13 year old making his senior debut taking 4/15 and scoring 24 runs?

Or the 15 year old who took 6/25 in his senior debut?

A ton on debut for the Boy from Ballarat.

Or beating the ultimate premiers in the last round, or perhaps playing in 45 degree heat?

Extraordinarily, only the one wash out but 2 byes.

Home games at Epping Oval in front of by normal standards a large and vociferous crowd.

And umpires, yes umpires for most of the season. Weren’t they most welcome.

It was just such a season in the 2017/18 edition of Tim Creer Cup.

What a bazaar finish to the season. After travelling in the top 6 for most of the season, a couple of late season losses saw us finish the regular rounds in 7th spot, agonisingly short of finals spot we had so dearly wanted. And then in the week before the Final, a bombshell. Penno get rubbed out for playing a non-eligible player and are disqualified from the final. They lose most of their competition points and plummet to last on the table. SO 2 weeks after we finish the season we find ourselves elevated to 6th spot. A small consolation but we would all have much rather played in the finals on merit than run 6th after such shenanigans. Funny game cricket.

We started the season with high hopes of a TCC squad in depth only for that ever-present scourge, Unavailabilities, see us scrambling to fill a couple of spots in the opening round. To the rescue comes eventual and deserved Clubman Trophy winner Derek McCarthy with more troops from our Juniors. And what started as a couple, then increased to a few and then eventually over the season proper, more than a dozen young men made the senior Bulls debut. And all fine young men and good cricketers. Their initial trepidation understandable they all nonetheless settled quickly and contributed to an enjoyable and successful season. You will see come comments below about some of the more regular guys. I hope they all enjoyed their experiences and learned from them as much as I enjoyed having them in the side.

One of the Juniors who made an instant impression was 13 year old MacKenzie Munro. Small in stature with an engaging smile and infectious love of cricket, Mac was an instant hit with the team. His first innings with the bat saw him score 24, which in the context of the match were very valuable late innings runs scored at a good clip. What came next was though, truly spectacular. 2.3 overs 4/15 to close out the innings. The crowd went off. It was a special atmosphere, one to be remembered. There were plenty of contributors that day including an impressive 4 wicket haul by Ryan Pascoe, another quality Junior, but Mac was the star.

Another debut truly noteworthy was Ryan Drake’s 6/25 in round 1. What an intro to senior cricket. Bowling with fire and a great line, what the lads from Auburn didn’t nick hit the pegs. Ryan held the ball high and saluted a very proud Dad on the boundary. Ryan appeared regularly throughout the season in our side and in 4th grade. A cricketer to watch in coming seasons.

Two things stood out for me this season as different from previous ones, and in good ways. Home games at Epping Oval and umpires. Wow, what an uplift in the quality of the cricket on offer. To have umpires took away a lot of the work involved on match day, allowing me to give more time and particularly thinking time to the team and its needs. Made such a difference to be able to sit and watch and to be able to chat with the lads rather than worrying about the day itself. And to play on the ancestral home of EDCC rather than travel the 4 points of the compass on what seemed like an endless season of away games because they were), was a true joy. Couple that with playing with such a bunch of quality people, I had a ball this season.

One of the aspects that made our home games all the more special to us was the support provided by the parents of these boys. Always encouraging us and willing to listen as we chat about how their sons were doing. It was also

28 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au good to understand a bit about what else the boys are up to at school and other activities. We also developed a special band of supporters during the season. The Chairman was a regular as were a number of guys from 1st Grade who regularly set up camp on a Sunday, refreshment in hand to cheers us on. They joined us on several occasions in the rooms to sing the song loud and proud with us and were always there to encourage. I nicknamed them “The Knuckleheads” but we loved them. Hope to see more of that sort of thing as it makes those of us who play on a Sunday feel like part of the whole club and that is an important thing to get across to the young guys.

The Regulars Naman Ganjekar The quiet man of the side. Naman was our spinner this season and topped the wicket tally. He also polled strongly most games to get the biscuits in the Graeme Baird medal, our players’ player award. Most deservedly so. Also held down number 11 with aplomb but that is not to say he is a bunny. He certainly showed he has some latent ability with the bat. Looking forward to watching him develop over coming seasons.

Mitchell Cotton. What can’t he do? Needed an opening bat. Try Mitch says his Dad, Shane. And there he stayed, cementing his spot with some gritty and determined innings. Needed a keeper. “Mitch can keep” from Shane again and so he can. Mitch himself offered to bowl some medium pacers and proceeded to show some ability here as well. A kid who listens then applies, learns quickly, has a quick wit, I think he learned a lot this year about the mental side of the game. Very good prospect.

Mike Knight Returning after a couple of years off, Mike came very keen to cricket this year and it started to show in some good performances. The 50 against Georges River was indicative of the improvement in his game and the latent potential he has. Regular cricket will bring this to the fore even more in coming seasons. Always enthusiastic in the field with a safe pair of hands.

Ethan Colmer Another quality young man from the Juniors who works hard at his game. A good all-rounder who made telling contributions in TCC before getting some deserved matches in 4s. Combining his talent and work ethic ensures he will succeed in coming seasons in our higher grades. One to watch.

Ant Doria Mainstay of our new ball attach, Ant is a great guy to have in the team. Doesn’t have the pace of Ryan Drake but thinks about his bowling and work on variety, he could be relied on to get an early breakthrough. Toiled manfully in that blistering heat at Lane Cove.

Liam Bowden Arguably the chattiest keeper in the club, Liam overflows with enthusiasm. He has a 2 speed approach to life and cricket, flat out or asleep. Has some real talent with the bat and gloves, just needs to keep the tempo in check a little bit to regularly succeed. And stop chatting up the girls on the boundary!

Alex Hudson I recall his first over round 3 versus Lane Cove. He almost tip-toed to the crease and sheepishly delivered the ball at just about medium pace. It was a pretty nervous start. By his last game for us 14 games later, he was charging in and sending them down considerably quicker much greater confidence. His development in that time was one of the most pleasing aspects of this season. He also showed a couple of glimpses of talent with the bat in both TCC and 4th grade. I look forward to seeing more of him in coming years.

Ryan Pascoe A quiet achiever, he only played just the 7 games but deserved more opportunities. His bowling is thoughtful and well directed. He took a couple of pastings from some far more experienced sides but always managed to have the last word by getting a couple of wickets in the mix. Showed a lot of courage in those instances and will have learnt a lot this season with both bat and ball. I look forward to seeing further development in coming years.

Usman Malik One of the few guys who played regularly who was definitely not under 16! Ussie is as keen a cricketer as you will find, capable of some very robust batting and bowling quality leg spin. His 3/20 against eventual premiers was a highlight as was that enormous six at Tantallon to finish off the run chase after selflessly helping Peter Colbourne farm the strike and get his ton. Always handy for advise too which was greatly appreciated in such a young side.

Annual Report Season 2017-18 29

To all the other guys who spent time with us this season, my profound thanks. Your contributions were always most welcomed and valued. Your commitment to help out at short notice greatly appreciated. A fine example of such was Steve Allard who, at considerable cost to his body and family time, put his hand up to help out for a handful of games when we needed him. Same goes for Matt Hodgins. Club stalwarts both.

Tim Creer Cup is an important part of our Club. It is the nursery, the bridge between Juniors and Seniors, a place to nurture talent, give it time to grow naturally at its own pace. It provides a pool of players ready made to jump up the grades when called upon. It’s a place where senior cricketers can still contribute to this great club. It’s also a heck of a lot of fun. May it long continue.

FRANK GRAY SHIELD U/24’S TEAM REPORT

The 2017/2018 season for the Epping Bulls Under 24’s side was one of mixed feelings and results. This season saw the end of an era for the ‘Wilson brothers’ who have lead the side brilliantly over the previous few years. Whilst being an obvious loss, the remainder of the squad were excited about the opportunity to step up and continue to develop and grow into the successful side that we know we can be.

Our bowlers were the ones to come out of the blocks brilliantly in the first game of the season against Pennant Hills. After sending them in, the new brother pair of Karl (4/31) and Jimmy (3/9) blew away Penno for 70 in less than 30 overs. This allowed for our experienced opening pair of Ben and Keishav to chase the runs none down and start the campaign in the best way possible.

After Penno came Mac Uni which is a fixture that Bocca always marks in the calendar and boy did he deliver. After winning the toss Ben and Keish got us off to another brilliant start with an opening partnership of 149. From this Ben took his innings to another level and blasted his way to his first maiden century for the club in his favourite Bulls floppy. The side finished with a record 8/328 after the 50. The fast bowlers then did the job all pitching in and allowed us to grab the points quite comfortably.

Lane Cove became the last game before the Christmas break and was one that went down to the wire. Lane Cove after winning the toss scraped and clawed to a respectable 189 after their 50 overs which again saw the wickets spread around with Steffan the pick of the bowlers with 3/24 after his 10. As always our openers got us off to the start we were looking for but after a few quick wickets, the Bulls were in a bit of trouble at 5/94. This allowed for Nic Ford and Karl Stewart to step up with the bat both adding valuable runs with the bowlers to allow for the Bulls to get the points 8 down in a tough game.

With 2018 upon us, the lads we licking at the bit for an opportunity to continue the good form against our rivals over the recent years in Lindfield. Lindfield won the toss and gave us the challenge of knocking them over on a green wicket to which Karl took the opportunity with open arms. Karl delivered a devastating spell with his first 5fa for the club taking 5/25 off 10. The bulls bowled out Lindfield out for what seemed to be a very modest total. Unfortunately, this is where the good news finished for the Bulls. The lads had to take on a nasty wicket after the break that saw stumps fly regularly to what can only be described as a rolling ball to most. This brought about our first loss in dramatic circumstances and the points going to Lindfield.

The final two games for the season were also ones that didn’t go the way we had hoped for with both Roseville and Warringah getting the better of us in the end. A Bocca 4fa against Roseville and a Cam Court 66 were among the few highlights we witnessed in these games. It would be remiss of me not to mention Keish’s 2 wicket maiden in our final game to give the crowd something to celebrate as the season came to an end. It was great to see Keishav have the final moment for our season after being a key part of the young bulls for many years as he now moves down to Canberra indefinitely.

From all this it was evident the team were able to string together moments of brilliance and dominate sides and play the brand of cricket we knew we could and wanted to. Whilst not achieving the goal of that allusive premiership, there is a lot our side can take away from this past season. With a large majority of the squad playing alongside each other for a number of years now, and none of the squad members finishing up due to age restrictions we are already looking forward and undoubtedly excited as to what this upcoming season can hold for us.

A massive thank you to both Phil Hood and Lewis Roper to making up our coaching team and giving up your Sunday’s to be there to help and support us during the season. It is greatly appreciated. We are already looking forward to taking the lessons learnt from the past season and using it as a valuable stepping stone to bring together an exciting opportunity as a squad and club.

Up the Bulls!
