Some Great Books are recognized at once with a fusillade of critical huzzahs and gonfolons, like Joyce’s Ulysses. Others appear almost furtively and are only discovered 50 years later, like Moby Dick or Mendel’s great essay on genetics. The Principia Discordia entered our space-time continuum almost as unobtrusively as a cat-burglar creeping over a windowsill. In 1968, virtually nobody had heard of this wonderful book. In 1970, hundreds of people from coast to coast were talking about it and asking the identity of the mysterious author, Malaclypse the Younger. Rumors swept across the continent, from New York to Los Angeles, from Seattle to St. Joe. Malaclypse was actually Alan Watts, one heard. No, said another legend – the Principia was actually the work of the Sufi Order. A third, very intriguing myth held that Malaclypse was a pen-name for Richard M. Nixon, who had allegedly composed the Principia during a few moments of lucidity. I enjoyed each of these yarns and did my part to help spread them. I was also careful never to contradict the occasional rumors that I had actually written the whole thing myself during an acid trip. The legendry, the mystery, the cult grew very slowly. By the mid- 1970’s, thousands of people, some as far off as Hong Kong and Australia, were talking about the Principia, and since the original was out of print by then, xerox copies were beginning to circulate here and there. -

94 Managing Religious Diversity Religious Diversity in a New Australian Democracy Rowan Ireland La Trobe University Religious Diversity, Disintegration and Democracy Just as the mainstream established Christian religions in Australia decline at various rates and in various ways, new religious groups flourish. The variety of these groups is astonishing, to many disconcerting. They include not only the New Religious Movements that burst on the scene from the 1960s to the 1980s- the likes of the Church of Scientology, the Hare Krishnas, the Moonies - but at least five other types of new groups. These are: New immigrant and ethnic community (NIEC) religions; New Christian conversionist groups, especially Pentecostals; and overlapping these New fundamentalist or charismatic groups within Catholicism, Judaism and Islam; New cults, centred around therapies and/or gurus and /or celebrities and/or ritual practices; and overlapping these New Age spirituality networks. Now these types, as suggested by my nervous phrase, 'overlapping these', are not good classifiers: each type is internally diverse, and placement of particular groups in one type is often going to be problematic. All of which underlines the simple point I'm making with the list: that increasing diversity or pluralism is one of the key features of the contemporary religious scene in Australia - not secularisation, not scandal, but increasing diversity. ARSR 24.2 (2011): 150-174 ARSR (print) ISSN 1031-2943 doi: 10.1558/arsr.v24i2.150 ARSR (online) ISSN 1744-9014 Using Communications Theory to Explore Emergent Organisation in Pagan Culture* Angela Coco* Southern Cross University Abstract Pagan culture presents a paradoxical case to the traditional frameworks and methodologies social scientists have used to describe religious organi- sation. A key factor influencing Paganism’s emergence has been its adop- tion of online communications. Such communications provide a means of coordinating activities in and between networks accommodating diverse beliefs and practices and the ability to avoid overarching hierarchical organisation. These characteristics have led theorists to label Paganism as a postmodern religion, signalling the possibility of a different kind of social organisation from that evidenced in modern religions. Karaflogka (2003) distinguishes between two aspects of the move online, religion in cyberspace and religion on the Internet. While the Internet may be an online place for cybercovens and for performing cyber rituals, the analysis in this paper focuses on the interweaving of online and offline communic- ative practices. I suggest that communications theories, as outlined in Wenger’s ‘communities of practice’ model (1998) and Taylor and Van Every’s (2000) communications mapping, afford frameworks for exploring the inter-connectedness of online/offline interactions and a means of identifying emergent organisation in the Pagan movement. The analysis focuses on a particular feature of Pagan organisation, the accommodation of both group-oriented and solitary pagans. The Encyclopedia of New Religions Bibliography The following bibliography has been constructed to enable readers to explore selected topics in greater depth. Rather than present a long uncategorized list, which would have been unhelpful and potentially confusing, the classification of literature mirrors the format of the book. (Classifying new religions and spiritualities is a notoriously difficult problem, and it should not be thought that groups that have been bracketed together do not have important differences.) In a few instances a movement may be relevant to more than one section; hence readers are advised to look in other sections if they cannot instantly locate the sought material. Anyone who compiles a bibliography on new spiritualities has to make choices, since there is a vast array of literature available. While endeavouring to include a good range of material and viewpoints, we have omitted material that we consider to be badly inaccurate or misleading. However, some religious movements have been virtually neglected by writers and hence the material indicated below is the best available. For some groups there is virtually no literature apart from their own writings. While we have aimed to incorporate material on the grounds of accessibility, quality, up-to-dateness, popularity and prominence, inclusion here does not necessarily imply endorsement by the editor or individual authors. At the end of each section a selection of websites has been provided. However, it should be noted that, whilst these were all available at the time of writing, and whilst we believe them to be relatively reliable, unlike books, websites can literally disappear overnight. -

The founders of this church looked at the religion that Robert Heinlein created in his science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land and decided to make it a reality. This puts them squarely in the company of What Carole Cusack has termed “invented religions.” These are religions that seek validity in works that are accepted as fiction. The Church of All Worlds, noW over fifty years old, has groWn beyond its science fiction roots, adopting practices and beliefs that have made them an influential part of the modern Pagan movement. Though fiction no longer plays as strong a role in their practice, they have remained dedicated to an ethic of invention. Through ethnographic research With Church members in Northern California, this paper explores hoW this ethic of invention manifests in official Church history, the personal relationships of members, and the creation of public rituals.
