This issue starts with a very thought-provoking essay by Professor Richard Griffiths that highlights some of the problems both field and zoo-based conservationists face not only in doing high quality research, but in communicating it to the rest of the conservation world. These are problems Durrell’s staff and students face regularly, and they are problems for which Solitaire is trying to provide some solutions. Although we are aiming at the highest standards, we are often working with small numbers of individuals, and in situa- tions that cannot be easily, if ever, repeated. Solitaire is an outlet for such studies, making our results available to a wider audience and, hopefully, stimulating more research and encouraging collaboration. This year’s Solitaire demonstrates perfectly what we are trying to do to improve evidence-based conserva- tion and the management of threatened species. Articles range from descriptions of techniques that have the potential to be of benefit to a wide variety of species – for example, habituating our female Sumatran orangutans to ultrasound equipment so that they can be monitored during pregnancy without stress – through updates on vitally important conservation initiatives in the field, to basic research on biology, behaviour and health, providing information that forms the essential underpinning of any conservation action.

  • My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Malcolm Durrell
My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Malcolm Durrell A memoir of an English boy growing up on the Greek island of Corfu recounts the author's humorous adventures as he collects all kinds of animals and insects and brings them back to the house, much to his family's dismay. Why you'll like it: Funny. Offbeat. Strong sense of place. About the Author: Gerald Durrell was born in 1925 in India to British parents. After the death of his father in 1928, the family lived in England and Europe before settling in Corfu. Educated by private tutors, he became interested in natural history and amassed a private collection of dozens of creatures from scorpions to owls. He founded the Jersey Zoological Park and the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust with the purpose of breeding endangered species. His first book, The Overloaded Ark, was published in 1953. He died from complications related to a liver transplant on January 30, 1995 at the age of 70. (Bowker Author Biography) Questions for Discussion 1. Does the author succeed in capturing the essence of Corfu’s varied animal and insect life? 2. Mrs. Durrell and Larry argue more than any other family members. Why do you believe they share this type of relationship? 3. When Gerald relays the story of the scorpions in the matchbox, he professes forgetfulness in leaving the box on the mantle to be picked up by an unwitting Larry. Is Gerald as innocent as he claims, or can this be the impish behavior of a child? 4. Mrs. Durrell appears adamant first not to leave England, and then to remain in the strawberry-pink villa.

  • Endangered Animals Within the Earthday Icon
The ‘Earthday Icon’ 3. Durrell Wildlife Zoo Endangered Animals within the Earthday Icon By Karen Blampied. Iconographer. B.Ed. Dip. Pastoral Theology, M.A. Religious Studies 1 There is some would say, a lack of ‘lustre’ from the Christian community in regards to Creation, Environment and Responsibility. This is one of the reasons I have written the ‘Earthday Icon’, so that whoever looks upon it in silent reflection may rejoice in the beauty of Creation and recall God’s commission to look after it and tend it. Our present era is about self and “selfies”. We do not see beyond our social setting, our own personhood. Individualism reigns. Social media, TV, and advertising, has degraded and super- charged humankind to a material world of things, often to the detriment of the human person and Planet Earth. Perhaps we are now trying to redress the imbalance by focusing on the self in all its aspects. This is not a bad thing in itself as long as the perspective is broad and varied. To underestimate the power of materialism on the self, and the compartmentalisation of our world in order for the self to own and take power over our cosmos has led to the geographical and natural world experiencing the brunt of this movement. “In recent years, we have been reminded – indeed in a painful way – of this truth – with the cruel flora and fauna extinction, with the irresponsible soil and forest clearance, and with the unacceptable noise, air, and water pollution. Yet our concern for the environment is not a form of superficial or sentimental love.
