• Aji Ichi Japanese Restaurant closes: One of our favorite Japanese restaurants here in Northern California closed itʻs doors after 25 years. It was located on 695 San Mateo Avenue in San Bruno, across the street from the Artichoke Joeʻs Casino, and not far from the San Francisco International Airport. Itʻs menu was Japanese but it had a distinct local flavor. Its futomaki, katsu curry on a bed of sliced cabbage and a spot of sambaizuke, and ahi poke were to kill for. Their potato salad came from an old, secret, family recipe. Aji Ichi was run by Jae and Francis Sherod {Roosevelt ’64) who retired and closed their restaurant on 31 March. Their staff included their daughter, Emi and grand daughter. The family has moved to San Diego.

• Mariposa Cafeteria shut down by Health Department: Definitely geared to working men and women, the Mariposa Cafeteria at 1599 Tennessee Street in the Dog Patch area in San Francisco was shut down last November. The Mariposa served Chinese food, oxtail and pork chop rice plates. But it was the roast pork with boiled cabbage and gravy over rice that was the best seller. T H E K A P A L A K I K O N E W S L E T T E R roast pork fix. I first encountered the teeming roast pork over rice plate at the old Woey Loy Goey, downstairs on Jackson Street in Chinatown. My friend, Josie Won, was the no nonsense Pāke wahine who was the manager of the night shift. She was one tough cookie. It was a favorite hang out of locals; longshoremen, warehousemen; ironworkers; musicians; street people; what have you; after the bars closed because the place was open till 4 in the morning. Josie kept everybody in line. It was a sad day when Woey Loy Goey closed down in the late seventies. Several years later, I stumbled on to the Mariposa Cafeteria and I could satisfy my roast pork fix once again. Now the Health Department has closed the Mariposa because of health violations. That may be so, but thereʻs something more sinister and dirty going on in San Francisco. Itʻs called gentrification. itʻs happened in J-Town and now again in Chinatown, the South of Market, Dogpatch; the Mission and other districts in San Francisco where working class people are being driven out of the city because of the high cost of housing.

Nedward was 1/3 of the original Hui ‘Ohana who had a lasting influence on every budding Hawaiian musician of the day, including, yours truly. The Hui ‘Ohana was made up of Nedward, his twin brother Ledward, and cousin Dennis “Duli Boy” Pavao. Sadly, Nedʻs passing occurred while Led was on tour with Mike Ka‘awa here on the mainland.

• Norman Shiota: (22 September 1937 - 29 January 2015): Kalee Terry, Norman Shiotaʻs third life partner invited my wife Evelyn and I to a Celebration Of Life for him at Massimoʻs Restaurant in Fremont in the cool of the evening of 21 February 2015. There, I finally got to meet two of Shiotaʻs four children: Michie, a business woman of Marin County and Bob, who is a claims adjuster in Napa. Before I realized it, that party was out the door leaving the Celebration early. which left me with the sinking feeling that, maybe, IʻIl never, ever get to meet Shiotaʻs daughters; Janine, an actress that appeared in Nash Bridges and Noelani, a Psychology professor at Arizona State University. All four offspring still carry their Dadʻs family name. The reality is that through divorces and other acrimonious altercations, families are split asunder and the resulting wounds may be so deep that we sometimes carry the bitterness with us to our graves. A cursory inspection of my and Evelynʻs respective families reveals that we both are not exempt from the same kind of sad reverberations. The following is an anecdotal address that was presented with others, near the end of the Celebration, that night. “Aloha and howzit? My name is Saichi Kawahara. In lieu of anyone else in close proximity, I am honored to represent the Sigma Lamda Fraternity of Honolulu. Please excuse my vernacular. Hopefully, my short treatise will explain everything. Weʻve gathered here this evening to eulogize and celebrate the life of my Sigma Lamda colleague, Norman Shiota who was born and raised in the environs of Hilo, Hawai‘i. Sadly, at my age, these kind of events are happening with increasing regularity. Shiota and I first met as seniors in high school. In the spring of 1955, when the Nuʻuanu YMCA in Honolulu held itʻs annual Model Legislature pitting each Hi-Y club Territory wide in a mock legislature session. This was my first taste of class encounter and struggle as all the public high schools went up against the flamboyant scholars of Punahou, a private school. Among others, Larry Yamashiro was there from Waipahu High; Archie Omura and Bob Chibana were there from Kaimukī High; Pauly Miyamasu and Sidney Nakamura were there from Farrington High; Norman traveled across the water and was there from Hilo High; and myself from McKinley High; all, public high schools. A little aside about the Hawaiian public high schools in those days was that generally, the public high schools had strong working class backgrounds. Waipahu, of course was linked to the workers of the sugar cane industry; Leilehua was tied to the workers of the pineapple fields; Farrington High in Kalihi had a lot of Filipinos, so it was appropriate that one of its school colors was maroon; Hilo High was on the Southernmost island of the Hawaiian archipelago, so, it didnʻt count; and my almer mater, McKinley High School had so many Japanese students that it was nicknamed "Tokyo High School." That group that represented the public high schools, spoke eloquent pidgin, the local patois, and went up against Asa Akinaka and Jimmy Sakoda from Punahou who were armed with debate experience and a million dollar lexicon. When the dust had settled, the kids from the public high schools had decidedly won the battle of debate. The next year all of us from the public schools found ourselves at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa campus where within 2 years some of the ʻ55 grads were recruited into THE KAPALAKIKO NEWSLETTER!!PAGE 37 of 63 Home - Calendar - School events - ʻOhana searches - Place activities - Ku Ka Palia - Mai poina - Music Scene KHB notes - Mahalo piha - Community

T H E K A P A L A K I K O N E W S L E T T E R the Sigma Lambda Fraternity. Shiota and I were 2 of several. Normanʻs brothers and pals referred to him simply as Shiota. It is a common practice among locals, especially the Japanese, to refer to each other by our last, familial names sometimes abbreviating them. Some of you may be acquainted with our Sigma Lambda brothers, Franklin and Jimmy Kometani of whom we referred to simply as Kome; and if they were together, as Kome 1 & Kome 2. Another brother from Kaka‘ako, Ralph Ohara was strangely named Fifi, The monicker had nothing to do with Paris, but instead, came from his small kid time, hupe kole, hana-batta days when he was referred to as Ralphie Boy and from there, Fifi. In my case, the name Kawahara was often referred to as Kawa not discerning the full name from Kawasaki [hai!]; Kawanishi [yo!]; Kawakami [you bet!]; Kawamoto [aha!]; Kawamura [present!]; Kawanaka [shaka!]; etc, etc. etc. As near as I can tell, this practice was inherited from our dadʻs generation. As a young lad people called me Freddie Boy which came from Fredric, crafted by my biological mother. It is the name that I used as a member of Sigma Lamda and the name most people of an older day remember me by. But passing through years of social struggle and consciousness change, I began to use my Japanese name which was also crafted by my biological mother combining the names of my paternal and fraternal grandfathers and my dadʻs calligraphic characters. Mothers do that sort of thing. And so legally, I now, do not use my slave (oops), Christian name. The ichi in Saichi refers to being the first son of the first son in the Kawahara ‘ohana, which Iʻve been told is significant in Japanese genealogy and family matters. It was during this period of political turmoil and ethnic awareness, particularly among the nationʻs youth, that Shiota and I by sheer coincidence ran into each other. This was early in the 1970ʻs when I was still at San Francisco State and a political activist in San Franciscoʻs Nihonmachi. I was hawking a movement newspaper on the corner of Post and Buchanan on a bright Saturday morning. Shiota just happen to be serendipitously walking through Nihonmachi. Even, not seeing him for years I recognized him instantly because of his puka head scar and the white bucks he was wearing. Local boys of our time used to wear white bucks, black or brown and white saddle shoes, or black French toed dress shoes shined to a high gloss by spitpolish with our box drape pants, in our high school and college days. Shiota had to peer through my long hair trying to recognize who the hell had called his name. He finally hollered, "eh, "Freddy? Is that you?" We had not seen or heard from each other since I left Hawai‘i and the Sigma Lamda for the bright lights of New York City in late summer 1958. Thatʻs a span of over 13 years. In a short conversation we vowed to keep in touch, but sadly, we never did. It was only a month ago when brother Galen Narimatsu emailed me to inform me that Shiota was in bad shape at UCSF. I had no contact with Shiota from that day in Nihonmachi and that was nearly 44 long years ago and we had not kept in touch as we had promised each other. The incredible thing is that we led parallel lives in the same area, without any knowledge of each othersʻ respective lives. So I didnʻt know who he married; who his children were; where he lived; what he did for a living; and stuff like that. I still donʻt know who his wives were before Kalee but I was introduced by email to his offspring, Michie, Janine, Bob, and Lani. Kalee also told me that Shiota made his living as construction consultant. I remember him studying civil engineering at UHM. So thatʻs another piece of irony, because I spent 22 years as a knuckle head rod buster in the THE KAPALAKIKO NEWSLETTER!!PAGE 38 of 63 Home - Calendar - School events - ʻOhana searches - Place activities - Ku Ka Palia - Mai poina - Music Scene KHB notes - Mahalo piha - Community

Kalee showed me a copy of Carmel Magazine with a picture of former Mayor Clint Eastwood on the front cover. There is a shopping center in Carmel. CA called the Barnyard. Just last year, my Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band played a wedding at the Hacienda, deep in Carmel Valley. and had dinner at a restaurant in that shopping center. Shiota worked on that shopping center project with Clint, and they became drinking buddies. So close and yet so far away in time. When I strolled into Shiotaʻs room at UCSF, he was asleep but I recognized him immediately because of his puka head scar and his blazing stare. When he awoke I asked him "eh you recognize me or what?". He wasnʻt quite sure who I was, but he kept sizing me up trying to recollect my face in the far corners of his memory. Kalee said to me, “heʻs watching you closely because you shook my hand." Thatʻs the Shiota that I knew in our early days. Mai poina e Shiota.” This tribute was written with the help of Kalee Terry in loving respect to her; to Michie, Janine, Bob, and Noelani Shiota; to our Sigma Lamda Fraternity brothers; and to all of Shiotaʻs friends and extended family

• Paul Tyler Martinez: (18 January 1940 - 12 November 2014). Several weeks ago, Ellen “Elena” Hollinger Aluli Martinez sent me this email message: “Aloha Saichi....hubby Paul is now flying and playing with angels. I am so thankful and joyful for our 24 years together! Wishing you and ‘ohana happiness and good health. Aloha.” That was the first notice I received about Pauly Martinez after all these years. Pauly was a musicianʻs musician and all the locals that played the ‘ukulele knew of his prowess on that instrument. When I first started being serious about Hawaiian music, many people stepped forward, taking me under their wings and gave me guidance and direction with their years of experiences which led to the formation of the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band in 1984. Among the many, the late Kawika Gapero and his groups Nā Kāne (Danny Kelly, Jon Kanae) and the Intangibles (Jessie Gamiao; Ron Leong; Imaikalani Young) and Rodney Villanueva and his group Kaeo (Roy Mondoy; Glenn Smith; Max & Mitchel Sanchez; Fingers Llanos); The late Moe Keale (Tadash Kitaoka, Mel Amina; Analu Aina); my own distant cousin Mike Ka‘awa and his association with Nā Keonimana (Allan Pokipala; Keli‘i Tau‘ā) which led to my chance meetng with Pauly Martinez. I was awed by his mastery of the ‘ukulele and his prowess in the 4/5 part harmony genre of Hawaiian music, historically influenced by the music of the Four Freshmen and the Hi Loʻs and manifested in groups like the Richard Kauhi Quartette; The Kalima Brothers; The Surfers; ABC; The Ali‘iʻs; Buddy Fo and the Invitations; the Mary K Trio; among others. During my musical awakening the acknowleged practitioners of this genre were Kawika Gapero, Moe Keale, Rodney Gonsalves, Imaikalani Young, Brickwood Galuteria, and Pauly Martinez and some of them performed together in Moeʻs exciting group, Ānuenue. Imaikalani and I grew up together in ‘Auwaiolimu Pāka in Pauoa Valley and he would regal me with stories of his musical past. He and I were drinking partners and would make the rounds of the clubs always ending up at the Oasis in the after hours to listen to ABC, Melveen Leeds old backup group which consisted of Ace Thompson, Butchie Moore, Charlie Māmala, Conrad Jiminez and Mike Seda. Thatʻs how I got to know Pauly Martinez. TALK STORY:

• Project Kuleana 2, Ka Na‘i Aupuni/Where AreThe Brothers?: Janie del Rosario, one of our Hawaiian music students, sent this and I pass it on to all of you. Done by the same production team that gave you Project Kuleana 1, /All Hawai‘i Stand Together, only three cultural practitioners from Project 1 appear on this video: Mike Ka‘awa, Sonny Lim who appears with his two of his sisters; Nani and Lorna; and Kamakoa Lindsey- Asing. It is nice to see my friends, Robert Cazimero, Lena Boy Naipo (of Kahulanui), Ata Damasco, and Richard Ho‘opi‘i. Cool, too, to catch up with Kimo Bell who was both Roland Cazimeroʻs and Brother Nolanʻs bassist. Kimo, one time engaged to Lehua Kalima of Na Leo Pilimehana, used to live in the sama building as Ryan Tangʻs mama, Avis (across the street from Lanakila Church in Kaimukī-Kapahulu. I tell of a funny anecdote of Kimo that involved the high cut shoes I used to wear. Itʻs always good to hear Casey Olsenʻs steel guitar, and Sean Nāʻauao and his Mana‘o and Company. Because of her politics and involvement with the Save Mauna Kea Movement, I am most intrigued with Hāwane Rios, who I do not know. She turns out to be the daughter of an old acquaintance, kumu hula Pua Case. Perhaps, Iʻll get to meet Hāwane some day/one day. To me, the most touching moment comes at the end of the shoot with a warm salute to Piggy Kaleohano, who with Bernard Kalua, Ku‘ulei Ahuna, Clayton Kua, and Abe Keala formed the Blalahs of Keaukaha oh so many years ago. Piggy passed away last year. Moon Kauakahiʻs haunting mele Kaleohano was written for Piggy and his ‘ohana. Linked with this video is the shoot of "Where Are The Brothers". It certainly is a musical treat to see Chucky Boy Chock, Ernie Cruz Jr., and bassist Sean Nāleimaile who takes a turn in front of the camera. Just like Project Kuleana 1, Kaulana Nā Pua/All Hawai‘i Stand Together, you gotta view this video. For me, I wish that these wonderfully performed mele were put into itʻs historical/political context. Without any explanation of this context, these remain wonderfully performed mele. From its beginning, the NSF was an Asian American event, organized and developed by the young people and organizations of the Nihonmachi community and itʻs supporters and allies. From Chinatown came the artistic talent of Leland Wong whose stylistic art graced the annual posters publicizing the NSF. The music involved performers and groups from the Afro American, Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander communities featuring, Reggae, Funk, Soul, Rock, Jazz, Folk and World music. It stood in contrast to the Cherry Blossom Festival, which was organized by the business, corporate, and cultural sector of the California Japanese communities with strong ties to Japan. 2015 will see the 42nd Annual Nihonmachi Street Fair, 1 & 2 August. Last year, the NSF featured Hawaiian performers Steve Espaniola and his band and the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band and we hope this tradition can be continued in the years ahead. The NSF is financially helped in part by the Aloha By The Bay concert series and is now run as a non- profit organization headed by Executive Director Grace Horikiri with help from the gang at Aloha Warehouse. • KAPALAKIKO HAWAIIAN BAND NOTES

Frontline performers include: Rose Baker, Bobby Black, Randee Chin, Teresa Cooper, Steve Hanson, Lillian Fujimoto, Karen Gehrman, Saichi Kawahara, Barb Plank, and Frank Vernon. Our apprentices: George Bobias, Jeanette Cordero, Allan Goodman, Loretta Hoffman, Leahi Kaulia, Ralph Loen, Jay Pagaduan, Tina Urata, Cathy Wong, and junior apprentice: Jake Shimada.

We donʻt exist in a vacuum and our music comes from a long tradition of watching, listening, keeping our mouths shut and learning. We owe so much to the people who came before us and the beloved kūpuna; the aunties and uncles; the old timers and contemporaries that help start, steer, influence and shape the future and development of the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band. Many, who have touched our musical lives are now gone, but, we donʻt forget. We cherish their legacies, gifts and contributions big and small, and the many doors opened for us: Haleakalā Adcock; Peter Ahia; Sam Aiko; Leinā‘ala & Dodo Alesna; Keahi Allen; Johnny Almeida; ; ; Keoki & Beatrice Chun Hoon Awai; Libby Naone Bailey; Mahina Bailey; THE KAPALAKIKO NEWSLETTER!!PAGE 43 of 63 Home - Calendar - School events - ʻOhana searches - Place activities - Ku Ka Palia - Mai poina - Music Scene KHB notes - Mahalo piha - Community
