A Message from the Office of the President

Dear Friends,

As we begin the new academic year at Marmion Academy, I would like to take this opportunity to share a MARMION few reflections on the importance of Catholic education in the missionary life of the Church. In his first Apostolic The News Magazine of Marmion Abbey Exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis devotes and Academy the entirety of his first chapter to the missionary work of the Church. He begins by saying: “Evangelization takes place in obedience to the missionary August 2014, Vol. 64, No. 4 mandate of Jesus: ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you’ MARMION (USPS 330-520) (Mt. 28:19-20). In these verses we see how the risen Christ sent his followers to preach the Gospel in is published four times a year every time and place, so that faith in him might spread to every corner of the earth” (The Joy of the in January, April, August and November by Marmion, 1000 Gospel, 19). Butterfield Road, Aurora IL, 60502-9705. Second Class postage The intention and we could say, the dream of Jesus was for his followers to proclaim the Gospel paid at Aurora IL, 60507. Free to all peoples throughout the centuries. Pope Francis, in accord with Jesus’ intention, says: subscription. “I dream of a ‘missionary option,’ that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be Publisher: suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world…” (The Joy of the Gospel, 27). Rt. Rev. John Brahill OSB ‘67

Editor: Within this context of the mission of the proclamation of the Gospel, Pope Francis later affirms Madelyn Weed the centuries old tradition of Catholic education as a principal way of evangelizing society: “Catholic schools, which always strive to join their work of education with the explicit proclamation of the Associate Editor: Gospel, are a most valuable resource for the evangelization of culture …” (The Joy of the Gospel, 134) . Terri Rios This “missionary dream” is in reality the basis for Marmion Abbey’s ongoing dedication to Contributing Writers: Terri Rios, Madelyn Weed, its educational apostolates at Marmion Academy and at our Guatemala mission. The word Rt. Rev. John Brahill OSB ‘67, “missionary” does not only refer to bringing the Gospel to far off lands, but also to one Rev. Charles Reichenbacher another right here at home. The Church’s mission is to evangelize all people of good will OSB ‘59, Maria Thornton, and everyone who will listen. Throughout the years the Benedictine monks have remained Carmen Freda, Christian focused on the missionary work of evangelizing through their witness of common life and Anderson ‘04, Victor Pinks ‘72, prayer, and through their continuing ministry of providing Catholic secondary education for Stephen Thurlow, Joe Large ‘97 young men. Through our educational work over the years thousands of students have been Photographers: prepared to be leaders as well as men of character and faith. They have and continue to make Terri Rios, Jim Newport, positive contributions to their local communities, to our country, to our Church and to the Brian Cole ‘81 world.

Following his golden jubilee at our annual Marmion reunion this past June 7, MARMION Magazine Editor he wrote: “Much has changed at Marmion but much more is still the same. I feel the spirit and the Marmion Academy values of what Marmion was all about in ‘64 is still there today. Yes, Marmion has evolved, as it should 1000 Butterfield Road and needs to do, but it seems to have kept its eye on the ball and that ball is still relevant and needed in Aurora, IL 60502-9705 today’s world.”

Year after year the donations have arrived at Marmion Abbey, always designated to be used for the Guatemala Mission. During the seventeen years I spent living and working at our mission (1992 – 2009), I inquired on many occasions why this group from Warren PA was sending in this donation. I inquired of Holy Redeemer Parish; of the group who was sending us this donation; of the monks both at our San José mission priory and of monks at Marmion Abbey who had served in Guatemala. No one knew why this tradition began.

In late October of last year, after attending a meeting in Erie PA, I made the short drive to the town of Warren in order to speak with the members of the Holy Redeemer Card Club at Holy Redeemer Church. During a breakfast meeting, I asked them as well as the current pastor and a deacon of the parish the same question: Why did this tradition Sr. Alice Morrison (1933-1980) begin? It was still a mystery. No one really knew. They all said that the group at the parish had been donating to the Guatemala Mission for many years, that they believed in our mission and that they thought it was a good cause. But they did not know why or how it began. However, during our conversation, Deacon Joe, who serves at Holy Redeemer Parish, remembered that back in the 1960’s and 70’s there was a young woman from the town by the name of Alice Morrison, who had served as a missionary in Guatemala. He said that he would try to follow up on this along with Peg, the president of the Holy Redeemer Card Club. Some weeks later Peg sent me the answer that I was searching for. She put me in contact with Sister Alice’s biological sister, Mary. Through Mary I learned that Sister Alice did indeed serve as a missionary in Guatemala, beginning in 1973. Due to poor health she was forced to return to the United States. She tragically succumbed to her illness and died on October 7, 1980, at 47 years of age. After her death the pastor of Holy Redeemer Parish, Father John Carter at the time, in memory of Sister Alice, arranged to send a gift to our Guatemala mission as well as a gift to The Maryknoll Mission Society. At the time he wrote, “These memorial alms will come from our Holy Redeemer Faith Commitment in which we pledged 60% to support a chosen mission. Our people will be so blessed.”

Over the past 35 years the Holy Redeemer Card Club has continued their support of our Guatemala mission in memory of Sister Alice Morrison, MM. I was not at our mission in the 1970’s, and all the Marmion monks who did serve there during those years have since passed away and can no longer be consulted. But I believe, without any doubt, that Sister Alice was a good friend of our mission. She worked as a primary school teacher as well as training lay leaders in the parishes in the Diocese of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. It was this same diocese which for many years sent their young seminarians to our mission seminary. In fact, today over half of all of the priests in this diocese received their secondary education at our seminary. Marmion Academy’s 2014 Mission Team traveled to Guatemala to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. Thus the mystery of the connection between Warren PA They stayed at the San José Priory and Colegio in and our Guatemala mission has been solved. We pray for Quetzaltenango. Guys and Dolls by: Maria Thornton, Director of Special Events Marmion’s 2014 Spring Production was Guys and Dolls, a musical drawn from two short stories by Damon Runyon, including characters such as Nathan Detroit (played by John Thornton ’14) who runs the “oldest established permanent floating crap game” in New York. Nathan is desperately seeking a place to play while simultaneously striving to keep his fiance of 14 years from becoming his wife.

To get $1,000 required to secure the Biltmore Garage as the location of his game, Nathan bets high-roller Sky Masterson (played by David Blaha ’15) that Sky can’t get the Save-a- Soul Mission’s leader, Sarah Brown, to go to Havana with him for dinner.

The students from Marmion and Rosary performed in the Alumni Hall April 11-13 with a state of the art digital set and to sold out crowds. Included in the weekend’s performances was the audience favorite Opening Night Gala which includes complimentary lavish desserts provided by parents of the cast and crew and a Cuban-themed Saturday Night V.I.P viewing which features an exclusive private performance by the cast of Guys and Dolls followed by pictures with V.I.P. members and the cast on stage and in costume.

Guys and Dolls was under the direction of Kristin Voris (who worked throughout her maternity leave to direct this fun production) with Julianne Vickers as Musical Director.
