I read the financial press every day. On a regular basis TI come across articles where I am told that some Gordon Gekko-type hedge fund principal or financier tells us he is really worried and he thinks sterling will devalue by two or three per cent in the next month. The explanations as to why this will happen are somewhat plausible but please . no panic. There is no byline, no author, and no references — nothing under the piece to suggest any attribution. We have no idea where it came from or who penned it. It just appeared. There is nothing to substantiate it or no counter-argument or editorial to challenge it. So we read it and repeat it to our mates. I see Gordon Gekko says sterling will devalue by two or three per cent in the next month. It then becomes a fact. What is indisputable is that it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The boys have all short positions in place and when the forest fire starts, they collect. A month later we are all blown away. That fella Gordon Gekko is a bloody genius. Put something out there in the newspaper and if nobody checks or challenges it, well then it is a fact. Wednesday evening came slowly and my editor calls.

Robin Walsh was President from the foundation of the organisation at Stormont in 2007 until he stepped down early in 2013 to take up the Presidency of Cricket Ireland. The CWI are immensely proud that one of our number should be recognised thus and doubly so that Robin filled the role with such dignity and commitment. It turned out to be both a tremendously successful year on the pitch and a historic one off it, and we are fortunate that a man with a trained eye and stylish pen was there to witness it all — and share it with us. Throughout his presidency Robin wrote a regular diary which appeared on the Cricket Ireland website but it clearly deserves a larger audience and a permanent place on the growing shelf of Irish cricketing literature. MERRION CC NEWSLETTER June 2019 Dear Merrion Cricket Club members, Welcome to the June edition of the club’s newsletter. We have had some excellent efforts on the field, and it’s great to see some of our talented youth members coming through to the senior teams, which is a credit to the hard work of our youth section, coaches and parents. We also had a memorable Curry Night and we are looking forward to further club social events this season. In this edition we run through how all of our teams fared last month and have a special section from the club’s archives where we bookend our club’s highest-ever appearance maker with those who have made the debuts for the 1sts in recent times, and some of those in-between who have made memorable records along the way. Also, you may have seen that we are raising money for the Club through the YOUR CLUB, YOUR PROVINCE CRICKET LEINSTER DRAW. I encourage all members to support this. All funds raised go to Merrion CC, and will help fund the development of the new cricket nets that we have planned. Good luck to all our teams in the coming weeks, including the men’s 1sts in the semi-final of the League Cup. Having topped Group B we qualify for the Premier League, which starts on June 9 away to Leinster. I hope to see you all at Anglesea Road soon. INTER-PROVINCIAL SERIES 2018 PLAYER ELIGIBILITY & SQUAD SELECTION POLICY 1. BACKGROUND/CONTEXT 1.1 With the Inter-Provincial Series now carrying First-Class and List-A status, the need to ensure that player eligibility is both clear, and adhered to, remains important, and maintaining the integrity of the competitions is key, given that ICC retains the authority to remove First-Class/List-A status from same at any time. 1.2 The Inter-Provincial Series (First Class, One day 50 over and Twenty20) is designed to provide a bridge between club and country and to ensure players have the opportunity to compete in a ‘best v best’ environment. It is crucial to the succession planning of the Irish team. Therefore players identified by the national selectors as potential future International cricketers are given the opportunity to play in the Inter-Provincial Series. Where there is a significant strength of such players in one provincial union, we must ensure players are able to develop by playing in the IP competition perhaps for another union. 1.3 The series is also important for the individual provincial unions as a way of raising the profile of the sport, providing opportunities for their best club cricketers, helping to underpin the growth of the sport, and underpinning commercial activities of the unions. ELIGIBILITY REGULATIONS Depending on the status of the player concerned, the following eligibility criteria will apply: 2.0 NATIONALITY QUALIFICATION CRITERIA 2.1 A Player shall be qualified to participate in an Inter-Provincial Match where he satisfies at least one of the following requirements (the “Nationality Qualification Criteria”): NOTE: The relevant information and documentation required to evidence satisfaction of the Nationality Qualification Criteria must be provided to CI at least 7 days prior to the player playing in an Inter-Provincial match.

We also introduced coaching for players new to squash and hope to continue with more of these in the New Year. Thanks to our coaches Michael Conroy and Theo Anderson for organising these. League This season the club have Men’s teams competing in the Leinster League at Premier, Division4, Division 5, Division 6. And thanks to great work from our ladies team captains Valmai Gee and Veronica Brogan, we are actively growing our ladies section and now have 2 ladies teams competing this year (both in Division 1) for the first time in a number of years. We also have 2 teams in the Saturday League and a further team competing in the Masters League.
