Abstract This thesis analyses the process of construction of linguistic meaning from a diachronic perspective. The analysis is based on the theories of intertextuality and social construction and applies a corpus analysis of collocations and paraphrases of key notions discussed in Darwin’s correspondence. In particular, the focus of the analysis is on the terms species and varieties with the aim to observe how the meanings of these terms are formed in a process of social negotiation. The thesis analyses the difference in the meanings of these terms, but also focuses on the diachronic dimension of their use in the correspondence, which allows for the observation of how different interpretations of meanings emerge in discourse. Thus far, diachronic studies in the field of corpus linguistics focused on comparing different historical corpora rather than observing the diachronic change of the immediate contextual environment of particular terms. The results presented in this thesis show that the meanings of terms are not only formed of different interpretations in discourse, but that these interpretations can be specific to particular temporal spans in discourse. i Acknowledgements Firstly, I would like to thank the College of Arts and Law for providing me with the scholarship which allowed me to undertake this PhD programme by covering my tuitions fees and contributing towards my maintenance during my studies.     Thinking with Birds: Mary Elizabeth Barber’s Advocacy for Gender Equality in Ornithology TANJA HAMMEL Department of History, University of Basel This article explores parts of the first South African woman ornithologist’s life and work. It concerns itself with the micro-politics of Mary Elizabeth Barber’s knowledge of birds from the 1860s to the mid-1880s. Her work provides insight into contemporary scientific practices, particularly the importance of cross-cultural collaboration. I foreground how she cultivated a feminist Darwinism in which birds served as corroborative evidence for female selection and how she negotiated gender equality in her ornithological work. She did so by constructing local birdlife as a space of gender equality. While male ornithologists naturalised and reinvigorated Victorian gender roles in their descriptions and depictions of birds, she debunked them and stressed the absence of gendered spheres in bird life. She emphasised the female and male birds’ collaboration and gender equality that she missed in Victorian matrimony, an institution she harshly criticised. Reading her work against the background of her life story shows how her personal experiences as wife and mother as well as her observation of settler society informed her view on birds, and vice versa. Through birds she presented alternative relationships to matrimony. Her protection of insectivorous birds was at the same time an attempt to stress the need for a New Woman, an aspect that has hitherto been overlooked in studies of the transnational anti-plumage

Field recordings made at our study site in Catalonia (Spain) during mid-winter show that the caterpill ar is remarkahle in its ahility to locomote and feed at temperatures we ll below those at which the activity of most other insects is curtailed. Colonies initiated fo raging bouts in the evening, 83.1 ± 35.2 minutes after th e end of civil twilight and returned to the nest the following morning, 42,9 ± 24.9 minutes before the onset of civil tWilight. Despite an overnight mean minimum temperature of 3.8 ± 0.25°C during the study period, caterpillars were active each night and did not become cold-immobilized until the temperature feU below _2°C. During the daytime, the caterpill ars sequester themselves within their nests and on sunny days are able to elevate their body temperatures hy conducting heat from the structures. The mean difference between the daily high and low nest tcmperature was 30.9 ± 0.9°C.     Appendix The Third Base Donald Forsdyke If I thought that by learning more and more I should ever arrive at the knowledge of absolute truth, I would leave off studying. But I believe I am pretty safe. Samuel Butler, Notebooks Darwin’s mentor, the geologist Charles Lyell, and Darwin himself, both con- sidered the relationship between the evolution of biological species and the evolution of languages [1]. But neither took the subject to the deep informa- tional level of Butler and Hering. In the twentieth century the emergence of a new science – Evolutionary Bioinformatics (EB) – was heralded by two dis- coveries. First, that DNA – a linear polymer of four base units – was the chromosomal component conveying hereditary information. Second, that much of this information was “a phenomenon of arrangement” – determined by the sequence of the four bases. We conclude with a brief sketch of the new work as it relates to William Bateson’s evolutionary ideas. However, imbued with true Batesonian caution (“I will believe when I must”), it is relegated to an Appendix to indicate its provisional nature. Modern languages have similarities that indicate branching evolution from common ancestral languages [2]. We recognize early variations within a language as dialects or accents. When accents are incompatible, communi- cation is impaired. As accents get more disparate, mutual comprehension de- creases and at some point, when comprehension is largely lost, we declare that there are two languages where there was initially one. The origin of lan- guage begins with differences in accent. If we understand how differences in accent arise, then we may come to understand something fundamental about the origin of language (and hence of a text written in that language).

Eriogaster catax (Linnaeus, 1758) and E. lanestris (Linnaeus, 1758) are two related species in the family Lasiocampidae with decreasing distribution areas and extremely isolated populations, thus being vulnerable to numerous threats, particularly human impact. Until presently, the biological and ecological studies regarding the species in question are scarce, particularly for E. catax, a species protected through Annexes II and IV of the Council Directive 92/43/EEC, Annex II of the Bern Convention and Law no. 49/2011 in Romania. Taking into account the importance of the E. catax species and the insufficient information reported on the ecological need of the species, a highly detailed analysis at an ultrastructural level could provide valuable information. The primitive aspect of the wings explained the weak distribution of adults. The different flight period of adults and egg laying season were reflected on the structure, adherence and size of eggs. Also, the structure of the fibers was correlated with the different ways in which E. catax and E. lanestris use the nest.     E-moth Moths Count Update October 2017 Autumn is here again according to the chilly misty mornings, falling leaves, not to mention the moths to be found in the trap. In recent weeks there have been many sightings of Clifden Nonpareil, it’s had its best year ever in Devon with eight individuals, all recorded during September. To our knowledge the moth has also been seen in Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Sussex, Kent, Hertfordshire, Suffolk and South Wales. Apologies for any omissions, there may well be more sightings but they’re not all submitted in way that we can report on them in a timely fashion. I loved this quote posted on the Sussex Moth Group website from Mike and Karen Galtry from Clifden Nonpareil (Les Evans-Hill) Worthing “Saturday night's trap was dreadful: a small handful of very common and particularly drab moths to show to our visitors... until the worst trap of the year became the best, when this huge Clifden Nonpareil spread its wings.” The Box Tree Moth Cydalima perspectalis appears to have had a spectacular year. We have received numerous enquiries and identification requests, far more than in previous years, about this species from members of the public. The Box Tree Moth was accidentally introduced to the UK. The first report was in 2007 in Kent and by 2011 caterpillars had been found in a private garden. This species is well established in the London area, it is spreading in distribution and the population appears to be growing. It may also be resident, very locally, in other parts of southern England between Essex and Gloucestershire, and has been recorded from Cydalima perspectalis (Tom Tams) Cornwall north to Northumberland.

Activity patterns of caterpillars of three species of Lasiocampidae were long-time monitored by electronic data acquisition. We used these data to test the hypothesis that the coloration of a caterpil- lar corresponds to its activity patterns. Caterpillars with warning colours (usually supposed to be chemi- cally or physically well-defended) should forage conspicuously throughout the day whereas cryptic caterpillars (supposed to be 'palatable') should have behavioural mechanisms for reducing exposure to natural enemies (hiding, nocturnal feeding). In terms of predator avoidance and thermoregulation social caterpillars should be strongly synchronized when foraging. Social caterpillars of Eriogaster lanestris (Linnaeus, 1758) were strongly synchronized and fed day and night, but synchronicity was low during moulting time and at the end of the last instar.
