My God, That's My Tune'
The composer recently made it on the New York hit parade with a song titled In every city. In an interview R. D. Burman talks about his craft. Left: R. D. Burman with Latin American composer Jose Flores. Below: The 'Pantera' team, among others R.D. Burman (centre), Jose Flores and (far right) Pete Gavankar. HENEVER an Indian achieves a Wmilestone abroad, he instantly gets more recognition in his own coun- try. Perhaps it's the colonial hangover that still makes us believe that they are always right over there. In this case however, the distinction is not going to make any difference as the person gaining it is already a household name here. Rahul Dev Burman, who has given music for 225 Hindi films, has made it to the New York hit parade with a song titled In every city. He is all set to launch the album—'Pantera'—in India. Two people have been responsible for getting him there—his father Sachin Dev Burman who was the only member of the family willing to let him enter films, and Pete Gavankar, a friend of thirty years who goaded him into seek- ing new pastures and has financed the album. Intrigued, we decided to find out just how the international album had come about and while we were at it, also gauge just how much R.D. had already packed into his life of 45 years. It turned out to be much more than we had thought as we had to have several sittings before we were through. But R.D. -

Her music is reflective of thumri, a secular South Asian musical style colored by intricate ornamentation and romantic lyrics of love, loss, and longing. Arooj Aftab restyles the traditional music of her heritage for a sound that is minimalistic, contemplative, and delicate—a sound that she calls ―indigenous soul.‖ Accompanying her on guitar is Boston-based Bhrigu Sahni, a frequent collaborator, originally from India, and Jorn Bielfeldt on percussion. Arooj Aftab: vocals Bhrigu Sahni: guitar Jorn Bielfeldt: percussion Semi Classical Music This genre, classified in Pakistan and North India as light classical vocal music. Thumri and ghazal forms are at the core of the genre. Its primary theme is romantic — persuasive wooing, painful jealousy aroused by a philandering lover, pangs of separation, the ache of remembered pleasures, sweet anticipation of reunion, joyful union. Rooted in a sophisticated civilization that drew no line between eroticism and spirituality, this genre asserts a strong feminine identity in folk poetry laden with unabashed sensuality. -
Concert SUFI
Muslim Saints of South Asia
MUSLIM SAINTS OF SOUTH ASIA This book studies the veneration practices and rituals of the Muslim saints. It outlines the principle trends of the main Sufi orders in India, the profiles and teachings of the famous and less well-known saints, and the development of pilgrimage to their tombs in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. A detailed discussion of the interaction of the Hindu mystic tradition and Sufism shows the polarity between the rigidity of the orthodox and the flexibility of the popular Islam in South Asia. Treating the cult of saints as a universal and all pervading phenomenon embracing the life of the region in all its aspects, the analysis includes politics, social and family life, interpersonal relations, gender problems and national psyche. The author uses a multidimen- sional approach to the subject: a historical, religious and literary analysis of sources is combined with an anthropological study of the rites and rituals of the veneration of the shrines and the description of the architecture of the tombs. Anna Suvorova is Head of Department of Asian Literatures at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. A recognized scholar in the field of Indo-Islamic culture and liter- ature, she frequently lectures at universities all over the world. She is the author of several books in Russian and English including The Poetics of Urdu Dastaan; The Sources of the New Indian Drama; The Quest for Theatre: the twentieth century drama in India and Pakistan; Nostalgia for Lucknow and Masnawi: a study of Urdu romance. She has also translated several books on pre-modern Urdu prose into Russian. -
Majrooh: the Poet Who Captured the Times
Majrooh: The poet who captured the times. The Hindu Business Line, March 18, 2021 https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/blink/watch/majrooh-sultanpuri-wrote-songs- for-more-than-250-films-in-his-five-decade-long-stint-in-bollywood/article34099511.ece Few people would have heard what can possibly be classified as the first pseudo-rap song in Hindi films- the song “Dekhiye, Sahibo, Who koi, Aur thi”, from the 1966 musical suspense thriller “Teesri Manzil”. All the other songs of this film are heard on the radio even now. All, except this one. And yet, this is an amazingly creative composition with words and phrases sung in a staccato fashion, which could easily pass for what later became the rap style. The song, sung brilliantly by Rafi and Asha and composed by R.D. Burman was written by the eminently versatile Majrooh Sultanpuri. R.D.Burman was a young, unknown composer then. Majrooh of course knew him well as S.D. Burman’s son and assistant. After all Majrooh had worked with S.D. Burman in many of Dev Anand films from the 1950s and the duo had given us hit songs like “Hum hain Rahi pyaar ke hum se kuch na boliye” and “Chal ri sajni ab kya soche” among many others. The story goes that Majrooh recommended him to Shammi Kapoor who was very picky about his songs. Shammi Kappor agreed to listen to this young upstart. The first composition that R.D. Burman played was the one which ultimately became “Deewana mujh sa nahin”- Kapoor immediately recognized it as based on a Nepali folk song which he had heard in Darjeeling! And the rest was history- Teesri Manzil was Burman’s first major hit. -
Deconstructive Phenomenological Analysis of Sufi Discourse
Copyright © Linguistics & Literature Review (LLR) ISSN: 2409-109X Online ISSN: 2221-6510 Print Vol. 2, Issue 1, March 2016 ____________________________________________ Deconstructive Phenomenological Analysis of Sufi Discourse Asma Manzoor University of Management and Technology-Lahore, Pakistan ABSTRACT Keywords: sufism, This study presents Sufi discourse of Bulleh Shaha and phenomenological analysis, Khawaja Ghulam Farid as a platform to assert the common deconstruction, Sufi emerging patterns in Sufi literature. Derrida’s deconstruction discourse, confessional is utilised to discover the binaries in Sufi texts and poetry phenomenological analysis to comprehend the essence of lived experience and themes of Sufi confessional poetry. The study reveals the substance of Sufi tradition to a general audience by analysing poetic texts and situates them within the larger Sufi tradition. It would make some contribution to the growing literature on Sufism and would offer an opportunity to researchers to unfold the Sufi narrative. Introduction Sufism is one of those very few approaches to life which are universally acknowledged and acclaimed. It’s also known as mysticism or pantheism in different parts of the world and is practiced in various ways to attain one and the same goal; unity with the divine spirit. All the Sufis/mystics and pantheist believe that human soul is a part of that divine spirit to whom it originally belongs to. While the object remains the same, the discourses, social practices and rituals vary in the above mentioned approaches. They develop universal love for humanity irrespective of class, colour, creed, race, religion, etc. Regardless of the fact that they preach kindness and love for humanity, their individuality is maintained throughout centuries because the very ontology and epistemology of these approaches is quite distinct. -
