Khorana Peepli Live FINAL
Peepli Live and No One Killed Jessica 66 Peepli Live and No One Killed Jessica: Remediating the “Bollywoodization” of Indian TV News Sukhmani Khorana Lecturer University of Wollongong Wollongong, Australia [email protected] Introduction: Evolution of “Bollywoodization” in Indian TV news In the third edition of her pioneering book on the Indian media business, Vanita Kohli-Khandekar makes the following observation: There are two media segments that define the contour, body and tastes of the Indian market. Television is one of them, the other being film. Both have a mesmerising hold over Indian audiences―and even over investors and advertisers.1 This article begins with this note because of the increasingly central place occupied by television in the Indian media sphere and the uniquely Indian context of the mutual interdependence of the television and film industries. While television has appropriated Hollywood film genres since its inception,2 in India, popular film culture is increasingly drawing on the pre-eminence of satellite television. A grasp of these facets of the subcontinent’s television story is essential before examining how TV news has taken on discursive and practice-based elements of the nation’s popular film culture, Bollywood. This will be undertaken through a close textual analysis of two recent Bollywood films, Peepli Live (2010) and No One Killed Jessica (2011). Both feature television journalism as an important narrative catalyst, or a remediator for the socio-political issues faced by the protagonist(s). In doing this, the films themselves turn into a remediation device for the Bollywoodization of news on Peepli Live and No One Killed Jessica 67 Indian television. -

The composer recently made it on the New York hit parade with a song titled In every city. In an interview R. D. Burman talks about his craft. Left: R. D. Burman with Latin American composer Jose Flores. Below: The 'Pantera' team, among others R.D. Burman (centre), Jose Flores and (far right) Pete Gavankar. HENEVER an Indian achieves a Wmilestone abroad, he instantly gets more recognition in his own coun- try. Perhaps it's the colonial hangover that still makes us believe that they are always right over there. In this case however, the distinction is not going to make any difference as the person gaining it is already a household name here. Rahul Dev Burman, who has given music for 225 Hindi films, has made it to the New York hit parade with a song titled In every city. He is all set to launch the album—'Pantera'—in India. Two people have been responsible for getting him there—his father Sachin Dev Burman who was the only member of the family willing to let him enter films, and Pete Gavankar, a friend of thirty years who goaded him into seek- ing new pastures and has financed the album. Intrigued, we decided to find out just how the international album had come about and while we were at it, also gauge just how much R.D. had already packed into his life of 45 years. It turned out to be much more than we had thought as we had to have several sittings before we were through. But R.D. -

German rights for Peepli Live acquired before official Berlinale Special Screening Mumbai, 15 February 2010: After rave audience and critics reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, Peepli Live, directed by Anusha Rizvi, co‐produced by UTV Motion Pictures & Aamir Khan Productions has just been picked up by specialty film German distribution company Rapid Eye Movies. Theatrical release for Peepli Live in Germany is planned for third quarter of 2010. Rapid Eye has also acquired the Home Video and Television for the territory. Stephan Holl, founder of Rapid Eye Pictures commented on his acquisition, "We are thrilled to bring to the German audience a true Indian art house film that entertains whilst telling a serious story" Amrita Pandey, VP, International Distribution and Syndication, UTV Motion Pictures, said, "Rapid Eye is an ideal distribution partner for us to plan a theatrical Germany release for the film." Peepli Live is Anusha Rizvi’s first feature. It is a fresh and intelligently spun satire of the real‐life epidemic of farmer suicides that have plagued India for the past decade. With a deft hand, Rizvi infuses humor and buoyancy in depicting this tragic predicament, illuminating the true colors of many corridors of Indian society. Peepli Live, is the first Indian film ever to be selected at the Sundance Film Festival (World Cinema Dramatic competition) and is also screening in out of competition at the Berlin Film Festival. Critics who have watched the film say: “A peppy screwball comedy with elements of social satire... Debuting writer‐director Anusha Rizvi manages to wrest a lively feature out of a gravely serious issue, capturing the desperation of India's village farmers, as well as the nation's shift from agriculture to industrialization, without losing sight of the entertainment principle.” – Rob Nelson, VARIETY “A comic gem set in India's beleaguered rural communities.. -

Majrooh: the Poet Who Captured the Times
Majrooh: The poet who captured the times. The Hindu Business Line, March 18, 2021 https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/blink/watch/majrooh-sultanpuri-wrote-songs- for-more-than-250-films-in-his-five-decade-long-stint-in-bollywood/article34099511.ece Few people would have heard what can possibly be classified as the first pseudo-rap song in Hindi films- the song “Dekhiye, Sahibo, Who koi, Aur thi”, from the 1966 musical suspense thriller “Teesri Manzil”. All the other songs of this film are heard on the radio even now. All, except this one. And yet, this is an amazingly creative composition with words and phrases sung in a staccato fashion, which could easily pass for what later became the rap style. The song, sung brilliantly by Rafi and Asha and composed by R.D. Burman was written by the eminently versatile Majrooh Sultanpuri. R.D.Burman was a young, unknown composer then. Majrooh of course knew him well as S.D. Burman’s son and assistant. After all Majrooh had worked with S.D. Burman in many of Dev Anand films from the 1950s and the duo had given us hit songs like “Hum hain Rahi pyaar ke hum se kuch na boliye” and “Chal ri sajni ab kya soche” among many others. The story goes that Majrooh recommended him to Shammi Kapoor who was very picky about his songs. Shammi Kappor agreed to listen to this young upstart. The first composition that R.D. Burman played was the one which ultimately became “Deewana mujh sa nahin”- Kapoor immediately recognized it as based on a Nepali folk song which he had heard in Darjeeling! And the rest was history- Teesri Manzil was Burman’s first major hit. -
Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe Mp4 Video Download How ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ Broke a Jinx for Shaan
koi kahe kehta rahe mp4 video download How ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ broke a jinx for Shaan. Mumbai: Singer Shaan has opened up on why Dil Chahta Hai will always be special for him. “Dil Chahta Hai’s success was extremely important for me because till then I believed that something had jinxed my movie soundtracks. No matter how super hit my songs were at that time, the movies didn’t do so well at the box office. So, I was really hoping for this curse to break and that happened with Dil Chahta Hai,” he said, while opening up on his Bollywood playback career on the music show Indian Pro Music League (IPML). Working on the film, he recalled, was fun. Farhan Akhtar, who made his directorial debut with the 2001 film, actually fooled the cast into believing the actor Saif Ali Khan had sung his part in the song Koi kahe kehta rahe, while it had actually been sung by Shaan. “Farhan Akhtar, had a vision that every actor should have a separate voice for himself in Koi kahe kehta rahe. I was brought on board to sing Akshaye Khanna’s part in the song, but after the recording Farhan felt that my voice matches Saif Ali Khan’s more than Akshaye’s,” Shaan recalled. “What followed was hilarious! He pranked everyone working on the movie, telling them that Saif himself has sung this song, and surprisingly people believed it. When everyone came to know the truth, they were stunned even more and that’s how I actually got the song ‘Woh ladki hai kahaan’ as well.” Dil Chahta Hai starring Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Dimple Kapadia and Sonali Kulkarni had music by Shankar- Ehsaan-Loy and lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
