Acts 13:13-22 Keep On Keeping On May 30 2021 (Memorial Day) Intro: Military life hinges upon training and endurance, from boot camp which teaches you can endure more than you thought you could endure, to times of war where some endure to the very point of giving their lives. Since 1776, our republic has endured for 245 years; the United Sates has been at war for all but 17 of our years. Over 1.3 million casualties with over 660,000 who have died in combat. We are the land of the free because of the brave. Endurance is required as a witness of the good news of . Galatians 6:9 (NLT) — 9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

1. Steadily Refuse to be discouraged by those who exit early. :13 (NLT) — 13 Paul and his companions then left by ship for , landing at the port town of . There left them and returned to . (Mom in Jerusalem, Paul leads instead of , Confronting sorcerer, Malaria-Gal.4:13) :37–40 (NLT) — 37 Barnabas agreed and wanted to take along John Mark. 38 But Paul disagreed strongly, since John Mark had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in their work. 39 Their disagreement was so sharp that they separated. Barnabas took John Mark with him and sailed for . 40 Paul chose , and as he left, the believers entrusted him to the Lord’s gracious care. :10,16 (ESV) — 10 For , in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. has gone to , to Dalmatia. 16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! 2 Timothy 4:7 (NLT) — 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. Phil Mickelson quote on failure, 12 days before he won the PGA championship at age 50 years, 11 months, and 7 days; becoming the oldest golfer to win a major championship. "I’ve failed many times in my life and career and because of this I’ve learned a lot," Mickelson wrote. "Instead of feeling defeated countless times, I’ve used it as fuel to drive me to work harder. So today, join me in accepting our failures. Let’s use them to motivate us to work even harder."

2. Show up and Stay ready to give an encouraging word. Acts 13:14–16 (NLT) — 14 But Paul and Barnabas traveled inland to of . On the Sabbath they went to the synagogue for the services. 15 After the usual readings from the books of and the prophets, those in charge of the service sent them this message: “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, come and give it.” 16 So Paul stood, lifted his hand to quiet them, and started speaking. “Men of Israel,” he said, “and you God- fearing Gentiles, listen to me. :15 (NLT) — 15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.

3. Stand up and respect the historical evidence for God. Acts 13:17–22 (NLT) — 17 “The God of this nation of Israel chose our ancestors and made them multiply and grow strong during their stay in Egypt. Then with a powerful arm he led them out of their slavery. 18 He put up with them through forty years of wandering in the wilderness. 19 Then he destroyed seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to Israel as an inheritance. 20 All this took about 450 years. “After that, God gave them judges to rule until the time of Samuel the prophet. 21 Then the people begged for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years. 22 But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’ • God raised up the nation of Israel • God who blesses and judges nations. • The seven Canaanite nations – Paul cites as part of his evangelistic appeal

Acts 13:29–31 (NLT) — 29 “When they had done all that the prophecies said about him, they took him down from the cross and placed him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead! 31 And over a period of many days he appeared to those who had gone with him from to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to the people of Israel.
