Birdsville ANZAC DAY in The Diamantina Bedourie

Phone 07 4746 1202 Desert Yarns • May 2017 Fax 07 4746 1272 [email protected] MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Hello again, the weather it seems has finally started to cool down at last. While this doesn’t encourage rain at least it’s pleasant. The highlight of the month for me was attending our ANZAC Day parade in . There were about a dozen former and current servicemen this year, and for the first time a contingent of United Nations peacekeepers with their blue berets. It was good to see some of the familiar faces that make the pilgrimage each year. There were 130 people at the service, more than people in the town, and 110 at the dawn service. It’s one of the greatest privileges as mayor to take the salute. I thank Cpl Morton for coming from Darwin to lead the parade. Afterwards there was a morning tea at the hall after which, again as mayor, I had the honour of launching the book “Diamantina Remembers”. This book goes into detail the war records of those from Diamantina Shire who enlisted in World War One of which there were 61. Because people from Diamantina had to go to the likes of Charleville, Winton, Port Augusta to enlist some may have been missed and for that we apologise. The council commissioned Brian Mooney to compile this record of servicemen some eight years ago and I congratulate Brian on the effort and research that has gone into the book. I would also like to thank Bev Morton for organising the wonderful spread we all enjoyed. I also was fortunate enough to attend the Bikes and Bulls in Bedourie. What a great day of dust, thrills and spills!! Seemed a good crowd and everyone enjoyed the day. Congratulations must go to the organisers of the day. This is actually a carry over event from last year, postponed due to rain, and the 2017 event will be in October. The council put on a farewell to Barb Mason, who, with her husband Mark are moving to Cunnamulla to work. Barb has been responsible for putting out this Desert Yarns as Events and Tourism manager. I thank her for her effort and wish them both all the best in their new endeavours. My poem this month is called “Diggers”, and is in recognition of the servicemen at our ANZAC parade.

About a dozen of them there were they All came to answer the Birdsville call Remembering times, and maybe pray Some recalled their mates that fall Some in uniform, but most were not And others wore the beret of blue Some stood straight but others not That we owed them all ,this is so true The corporal called the march to order Bent backs straightened heads snapped up This was their day they would not falter They marched that day like a pup

2 Desert Yarns • May 2017 At salute their eyes snapped right Clear eyes were they, still determined Knew if needed they would fight These men of ours, they are no burden Some saw action death and gore Others kept peace and the children safe All kept the wolves from our front door Our collar of freedom it will not chafe They watch the flag lowered and raise Remembering friends that were not there I silently thanked them and heaped my praise And love them all, more than I could dare.

Geoff Morton Mayor

Desert Yarns • May 2017 3 CEO's Comments At the recent LGMA Award for Excellence Gala Dinner, Diamantina Shire Council, conjointly with the Barcoo Shire Council, was awarded the Award for Excellence in Community Shaping by the Local Government Managers Australia (Qld) branch for the Connecting Remote Communities project. This is in recognition for the joint project to connect our 5 towns with Optic fibre allowing ADSL2+ internet and mobile phones to be installed. Unfortunately neither Council could be represented at the awards night as it clashed with our road testing new software in Winton but a big thanks to Hailey Winter at the Barcoo Shire Council for submitting the award on our behalf.

The project is starting to produce results with 4G mobile coverage turned on at Birdsville recently with connection into the optic fibre rather than through the satellite. This has significantly increased speed and capacity within the town for data transfer and voice calls.

I had the pleasure of attending the Birdsville Anzac Day Service. Every town pays its respects in a different way to another and Birdsville is no different. It was great so see the effort that the residents go to in making this a special occasion, particularly the feast afterwards at the hall.

Following the formal ceremony, Council launched the ‘Diamantina Remembers’ book. Funded by the Queensland Government, the book provides an insight into each Shire resident that enlisted in World War 1. I encourage you to get a copy which are available for sale at the Wirrarri Centre in Birdsville and the Bedourie Visitor Information Centre.

From all reports, the Singapore ant population in Bedourie has been sent packing following a concentrated spraying campaign in early April. Council organised Minserv to spray all house yards with known Singapore Ant nests and sprayed properties on the perimeter of the entire area as a containment area. Local staff were also trained in how to apply some granular insecticide if the ants do reappear.

Council is intending on offering a number of residential and industrial vacant blocks in Bedourie and Birdsville for sale via auction later in the year. Birdsville’s auction will be around Birdsville Bash time with Bedourie being later in the year closer the Bedourie Races. Look for advertising flyers that will be distributed in the coming weeks so that you can start thinking about which block you might like.

Staff movements – Council is losing another senior member of its staff with Harin Karra taking up a new role at Boulia Shire Council as Director Works and Operations. Anna is moving with Harin so we will also have a vacancy in the Housing and Records area of the office. After more than 7 years in the Diamantina Shire, they felt it was time to take on new challenge, albiet not very far away. Also moving on are Dean Warner from our Multi Skill crew and Jim Knudson Grader Operator. This follows on from the departure of Barbara Mason early in April. Council is in the process of recruiting new staff to fill these roles with interviews for the Bedourie Tourism Officer having be conducted recently and interviews for the Manager Tourism and Events position being arranged as I write this report.

Until next month…

Leon Love

Chief Executive Officer

G’Day All

The Tourist season is well and truly underway with groups of people and travellers coming and going from Birds- ville on a daily basis. Over the Easter long weekend we had a large number of people visit our wonderful part of the country. Unlike last year the roads have remained dry making travel easier for people. The dry rocky roads do create their own issues and I ask that everyone continues to watch their speed and be courteous to other road users. Please drive to the conditions and provide friendly advice to visitors whenever you can. Can I also ask that everyone be mindful of the 50 Klm per hour speed limits through Birdsville and Bedourie. Both towns have school age children crossing the roads, council staff working around the streets and both towns have tourists who may be too busy look- ing at our wonderful towns, taking photos and not concentrating on the roads. On a side traffic note, a big shout out to the person or persons who earlier in the year decided to do burnouts on the road at the Windorah turnoff, I strongly believe that it was locals due to the timing of the incident, I hope not! Firstly it is not a great first impression for people visiting Birdsville when the first thing they see is black tyre marks on the road. Secondly it is illegal and your vehicle can be impounded should you be caught. The next time you want to do burnouts around town give me a call I would love to be there.

ANZAC DAY I recently took part in the Birdsville Anzac day celebrations, it was great to again be a part of the celebrations at Birds- ville and it was great to see such a turnout for both the dawn service and the morning parade.

BEDOURIE We are still waiting for the replacement officer to be chosen for Bedourie. The position has been re-advertised and I understand that there are some interested applicants for the spot. Hopefully the position will be filled soon. I am looking forward to welcoming and working with the new officer.

EVENTS It won’t be long now and we will have the first of our events in Birdsville. Both June and July are looking busy with a number of events including the Big Red Bash. As always extra police will come down to Birdsville to help out with policing the events. I remind everyone to ensure that your vehicles are registered and your licences are up to date. Do not drink and Drive extra police will mean extra chances of being caught.

Desert Yarns • May 2017 7 BIRDSVILLE QGAP NEWS

Hello All

Has your registration expired? Have you checked the expiry date on your licence? Have you recently changed address and haven’t updated your licence?

These are things you need to consider right now!!!

It is coming up to event season once again and time to make sure that our QGAP business up to date. Over event season we have a lot of police assisting from out of town and who may not be as tolerant as your local guy. Leaving things to the last minute may mean that you are unable to access the QGAP office and therefore leaving you unable to drive your car. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that your business is up to date and you CAN NOT use the ‘QGAP office wasn’t opened’ on the day you needed your licence or vehicle as an excuse.

We are always happy to send you the paperwork you need or meet with you outside of the allocated hours by ap- pointment. However telling us that your licence or rego expiry is today and you need to use it tonight isn’t going to work.

You have been warned fines will still stand in court if you happened to get one. It is your responsibility to ensure your business is conducted within the timeframes and within required regulations.

I am happy to make appointments, within reason, and to send you the required forms so that you aren’t spending all day in the office. Allocating an appointment time will also ensure that someone is actually in the Birdsville or Bedourie offices to assist you.

As you all know the Birdsville office is open Mondays and Tuesdays and by appointment. Stephan and the officers at Bedourie and Boulia are also available to assist outside of those hours. If you do ring and the phone has been trans- ferred to them just let them know what you are after and they will be able to help you, you don’t need to ask for the QGAP officer the Police officer on duty can also assist. (They can head down to Birdsville or up to Bedourie or organise for paperwork to be emailed to you).

Please don’t leave things to the last minute. The last minute may be too late.

BEDOURIE written by Richard Cooley As the town awakened to the very friendly siren of the towns Fire Truck as it went on its way, giving everyone an early morning call to say that the Dawn Service was upon us. The town gathered as our Dawn Service commenced at ANZAC Park in dawns breaking light with 60 plus people attending. It was most pleasing to see that the support to the dawn service continues to be the service that resonates with the community ever since our 100TH Anniversary of ANZAC Day service that was held on the hill The service was conducted by Richard Cooley with Cr Doug Cooms reading the Dawn Service address and laying wreath along with our CEO, Mr Leon Love, who laid a wreath on behalf community, and Mr Gordon Jones laid a wreath for the Emergency Services. Cr Bev Maunsell, Jodie Girdler, Gordon Jones and Shandell Smith read prayers and poems. Following the service the now famous Bedourie Dawn Service breakfast was served to everyone by our resident master BBQers Jodie and Butch. The breakfast and some traditional ANZAC Day refreshments capped a wonder- ful morning that was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. After everyone retreated from the dawn service the marchers reassembled at the school, along with the horsemen and women from the cattle stations, whose presence now forms part of the Bedourie ANZAC Day traddition, to march to ANZAC Park. The march was led on horses ridden by Bridey and Jack Cramer, with assistance from their father Cr Steven Cramer, as Bridey carried the book “Diamantina Remembers’, which conveys the history of every WW1 soldier who is named on the towns memorial walls, as a symbolic memory to these brave men from the shire who served in World War One WO2 Richard Cooley (Rtd), the school children, their parents and our horse contingent marched along the route that leads past the pool and up Herbert Street to ANZAC Park. At the park the school children received the book from Bridey and with Cassidy Bell carrying the book flanked by Justin Bell, Charlea Smith and Eliana Karra, who each carried an Australian National Flag, delivered the book to WO2 Cooley (Rtd), as the book was going to be laid at the memorial wall in honour of the soldiers listed on the wall As the parade personnel moved into the park to join the already large numbers of watchers our service coordi- nator, WO2 Cooley (Rtd) welcomed everyone to the service. Mrs Leanne Jansen read an introduction to the book “Diamantina Remembers” and how it was borne out of the research on the soldiers who enlisted and served whom lived in the Diamantina Shire. Our relieving police officer, Snr Constable Andrew Parkes delivered a reading about the ANZAC landings The Deputy Mayor, Cr Steven Cramer, read the Anzac Day address and laid a wreath on behalf of Council. Wreaths were laid by Krista Riley for the community, Harin Karra for Emergency Services, Shandell Smith for the indigenous community, WO2 Cooley (Rtd) for the Defence Force and the school children The culminating point of the day was, when at the beginning of the wreath laying ceremony, Mr Jim Smith, the town’s long term resident, laid the book on the memorial wall with the assistance all of the town’s school children who each laid a poppy in memory of the men listed on the wall. Both services were a moving tribute to all of the men and women of our nation who have served in the defence of our country. Again it was pleasing to see just how many of our youth were at the service, especially all of the young people who brought in their horses and rode in our march which commentates the most significant day in our na- tion’s military history. We wish to thank all of the riders from Cluny, Kamaran Downs, Glengyle and Marion stations who gave up their time to be apart of the service and again make the Bedourie ANZAC Day service a sight to behold in this part of nation. With the crowd staying it was then off to the community centre to have lunch and play bingo at the long standing traddition of the Bedourie ANZC Day community function.

BIRDSVILLE written by Bev Morton The day started with a traditional Gunfire breakfast hosted by the Birdsville Bakery. This was followed by the Dawn Service led by Cpl. Steven Morton who had come down from Darwin especially for the day. 109 people attended the service which makes it the biggest Dawn service in Birdsville. Numerous returned Veterans were amongst the crowd. At 9am the Community and visitors gathered at the hotel in readiness for the march to Anzac park. The parade was led by six horse people with Spinny Monaghan carrying the book ,”Diamantina Remembers” The Mayor took the salute as the parade passed the school. The march ended at Anzac park whereby the book was handed to Sage Mac- Donald who then handed same to Leon Love. Following the service the book was handed to Cpl Morton who then laid it at the base of the World War 1 memorial. The gathering then proceeded to the community hall for a morning tea hosted by the Betoota Race Club Inc., on be- half of the shire Council. Desert Yarns • May 2017 15 Community News Bedourie State School... Once again, the students at Bedourie State School did an exceptional job on Anzac Day. They marched in the parade, and then also participated in the service at the Park. All were extremely respectful to the soldiers who have fought for us in the many wars Australia has been involved in. Many thanks to the community members who then supported the P&C by attending the BBQ lunch and Bingo after- noon. A great time was had by all. A special thanks to Dougie from the Simpson Desert Oasis Roadhouse for emcee- ing the afternoon.
