Steve Roberts came to Arkansas State University and brought with him a fresh enthusiasm, energy, and an “I Will” philosophy that has been adopt- ed by everyone associated with the program. “I Will” became the rallying cry and soon changed to “We Did” in 2005 when Roberts and the Indians took a Sun Belt Conference championship to the New Orleans Bowl. ASU finished the season with a 6-6 record and turned the heads of a lot of football experts toward Jonesboro. For his efforts, Roberts was named Sun Belt Conference “Coach of the Year.” After going 6-7 and finishing third in the league rankings in his inaugural season, the Indians finished in the top ten turnarounds by Division I-A football schools. Also, attendance increased significantly in 2002 and has been growing since. But, wait! The 2003 season saw a lot of success as well. Attendance increased even more, two defensive linemen ended up in the National Football League, the team won the Sun Belt Conference academic award, and so on, and so on, and so on. The 2004 season exploded when it came to fan involvement. Take a look at the Memphis game...a record crowd of 30,427 and a sea of red to cheer on the Indians. There were also accolades for nation- al and Sun Belt honors for players, and one player signed a contract with the NFL Seattle Seahawks. Then 2005 was the year?another SBC academic award, all-conference players, a bowl game, unde- feated in Indian Stadium, strong recruiting?you name it, Roberts and the Indians did it. After his first season as the Indians’ football chief, Roberts became the first ASU head coach since Gene Harlow (in 1955) to win at least six games in his first year as a head coach. Also, ASU’s two road wins at Louisiana-Monroe and Idaho were the most since 1989. Roberts, a native of Little Rock, was named Arkansas State’s 26th head football coach on December 21, 2001, to bring full circle his coaching odyssey from his home state through Louisiana and back. But, the trek has been a successful one, including an 8-4 record and national ranking in Division I-AA in 2000 at Northwestern (La.) State. Roberts spent two seasons at NSU where he and his staff and team took on a tough schedule, which included a 27-24 overtime upset at TCU. While at NSU, Roberts was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach Quick File of Steve Roberts of the Year Award. Coaching Record 69-61-1 (12 years) Prior to going to NSU, Roberts served as the head coach and at Arkansas State (20-28) defensive coordinator at Southern Arkansas University in 2005 6-6 / 5-2 (First) Magnolia from 1994-99. While there, his 1997 team won the 2004 3-8 / 3-4 (6th) Gulf South Championship, earning him Gulf South Coach of 2003 5-7 / 3-3 (t-4th) the Year honors. The Muleriders finished with a cumulative record of 26-5 from 1997-99, including 9-1 in 1999, 8-2 in 2002 6-7 / 3-3 (3rd) 1998 and 9-2 in 1997. at NW State (14-8) 2001 6-5 During that span, his teams enjoyed top conference rankings in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense and total 2000 8-3 defense. At SAU, he also served as the defensive secondary at Southern Arkansas (35-25-1) coach and recruiting coordinator from 1990-94 before being 1999 9-1 named head coach. Academically, his program ranked first in academic achievements in the Gulf South Conference three 1998 8-2 seasons. 1997 9-2 1996 4-6 Roberts, an avid fisherman, graduated from Robinson High School in Little Rock. A 1987 graduate of Ouachita Baptist 1995 4-6 University, Roberts received his masters from SAU in 1989. 1994 1-8-1 20062006 SSpringpring PreviewPreview

Battle for quarterback and tailback slots will highlight ASU spring practice

The not-so-distant sounds of celebration can still be heard on and around the campus at Arkansas State after winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship and earning the accompanying berth in the New Orleans Bowl. Quarterback Nick Noce and tailbacks Antonio Warren and Shermar Bracey led the football team into the school’s first-ever I-A bowl game. But that was in 2005. The 2006 team has some holes to fill, especially on offense, but an experienced defense returns to lead the charge into a new season to repeat at SBC Champions.

Offense Quarterbacks No single spot has more to replace than the quarterback position for the Tribe. Travis Hewitt returns as the only player with any snaps at any level at quarterback, and his eight career pass attempts won’t threaten the top statistical returning signal callers nation-wide. But Hewitt and redshirt freshman Corey Leonard are smart, mobile and athletic, possessing the intangibles necessary to lead this team in its attempt to repeat as conference champs and head to another bowl berth. Hewitt (6-1 / 210) played in two games early in a mop-up role last season and didn’t get in a game again except as holder the rest of the season. Still, Hewitt will be entering his third season at ASU and has had plenty of time to absorb the system. Hewitt is listed as the top signal caller heading into spring. Corey Leonard (6-1 / 196) was among the top quarterbacks in Louisiana and one of the top all- around athletes as a draftable baseball prospect. Leonard’s time in the offense may not be as lengthy as Hewitt’s, but has done a good job of picking it up on the fly. Both quarterbacks learned while watch- ing Nick Noce last season.

Running Backs Not since the days of the wishbone attack has such a diverse and talented group of run- ning backs been assembled for an all-out battle in the spring for carrying-rights. Yes, losing the tan- dem of Antonio Warren and Shermar Bracey will be a difficult task to overcome, but the stable is far from bare. Chris Easley (6-0 / 211) is the only returning tailback with any appreciable carries within the scheme of the offense, but Easley is certainly not devoid of experience or talent. The starting back on the roster as a redshirt freshman at the end of the 2003 season, Easley suffered through a terrible knee injury in the spring of 2004 and missed the entire fall recovering from surgery. In 2005, despite play- ing behind Warren and Bracey, Easley still made key contributions, highlighted by some tough carries in the overtime win against Florida Atlantic. Easley enters the spring atop the herd at the tailback posi- tion but won’t have the job given to him. There are some future stars eager to take their turn with the ball in their hands. Chris James only has four carries, but his first one was memorable enough as he scored a touchdown from 21 yards out against Florida International. The small but muscular James should get a long look from the coaching staff in the spring as one of the more mature backs in the mix. Jockeying for snaps will be redshirt freshmen Cedric Wilkerson and Reggie Arnold. Wilkerson and James are similary in size and running style, both difficult to bring down and shifty enough to avoid head-on collisions. Arnold is heavier than the other two but is actually faster, running 20062006 SSpringpring PreviewPreview

sub 4.5’s routinely and has even been clocked as fast as in the 4.3’s. Although quiet by nature, Arnold could end up making the most noise at tailback. If you’re going to to break in a totally new quarterback and tailback, protectors and leaders are needed up the middle, and few rate as highly in both categories as fullback Oren O’Neal. O’Neal (6- 0 / 244) was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA to play this fall and, already a graduate for one season, O’Neal is considered in most circles to be one of the top-five fullbacks in the nation. Strong and smart, O’Neal is primed for even greater success on the the field this season. Jon Hoeflinger (5-11 / 221) saw action last season on special teams and has worked hard to become a viable threat as a fullback. A transfer from a junior college in California, Hoeflinger’s hard work and dedication has paid dividends heading into spring practice and should see playing time in the fall. Brett Shrable (6-2 / 226) has made the move from linebacker to fullback for the spring and should quickly settle in as a potent player. Mainly a quarterback in high school, Shrable has good speed and hands and is expected to pick up blocking assignments fairly quickly.

Wide Receiver An array of wide receivers will be available for the new quarterback, making a transition a little easier for whichever one nails down the starting job for the fall. A deep and talented corps of receivers will be put on display this fall and will be expected to produce even more impressive numbers than in 2005 as the position returns 124 catches (out of 162 completions in 2005) and nine of the 13 passing touch- downs. Gary Vincent is the “old man” of the group and the only senior at a position that has nine schol- arship players for the spring. Vincent (5-9 / 169) has produced solid and steady numbers for ASU in his career and should continue to mentor players at his position while continuing to excel at catching the ball. Levi Dejohnette (6-0 / 175) paced all receivers last season by catching 42 passes for 555 yards. The steady play of Dejohnette made him the featured target of Nick Noce in 2005 and should continue that role for his young quarterbacks this spring. Patrick Higgins (6-2 / 184) and Joe Smith (6-4 / 186) are lanky targets that showed off their skills last season by catching 28 and 18 passes, respectively. Smith led all receivers with four touchdowns in 2005. Kevin Jones emerged late in 2005 as a big-play receiver after hauling in the biggest catch of his career at North Texas. Jones (5-10 / 169) should continue to emerge as a top threat at the posi- tion for the spring after averaging 20.1 yards per reception in 2005. Jarriel Norman is the ultra-fast receiver to stretch the field that ASU coaches have wanted on the field. After redshirting as a fresh- man last season, Norman (5-9 / 173) is expected to blossom into a legitimate threat at the position. Chris Miller (6-1 / 205) followed a great spring game in 2005 with a quiet sophomore season. Fast and big, Miller will spend the spring trying to find a comfortable role in the offense and become the dual threat he showed in the spring of last year catching and blocking. Aaron Langford (6-0 / 202) and Travis Jones (6-0 / 181) will round out the scholarship receivers vying for field time this spring as they jockey for chances on the field at arguably the deepest position.

Offensive Line Two starters are gone from the crew that led ASU to a bowl game and two other linemen are out for the spring to recover from surgeries. In the recent past that would be an enormous blow to the Indians. This spring? The depth and talent has emerged to offset the losses. Tanner Jenkins (6-1 / 279) is undeniably the leader of the pack. A three-year starter and a 20062006 SSpringpring PreviewPreview member of the Lombardi Award watch list, Jenkins is coming off a season where he was picked as a first-team All-Sun Belt member and was respected so much that opposing defensive coordinators based schemes to go around him. Man-child Matt Mandich (6-3 / 282) was picked as a second-team All-SBC performer last sea- son as a freshman and still hasn’t reached his true potential. At times he absolutely dominated at the left tackle positions in 2005. A rigorous offseason workout routine has him better equipped to surface as perhaps the best lineman on the team. Shawn Shoemake (6-3 / 319) takes over at left guard for the graduated Lance Martin and is considered by offensive line coach Darren Hiller as the player most likely to make an impact as a starter in 2006. Shoemake had an opportunity to play several snaps last season as a back-up and made the transition from a star defensive lineman in high school to the offensive line with ease. Jess McDonald (6-2 / 303) and Dale Maas (6-5 / 288) are tabbed as starters on the right side heading into spring drills after each were part of the total line rotation during the 2005 season, allowing the two the opportunity to get several snaps each. Aside from Matt Reibe (6-3 / 300) and Zach Eichenberger (6-4 / 270), experience is thin into the second-string with the injuries to Kyle Koets (6-4 / 292), Chris Johnson (6-3 / 328) and Vincent Thrower (6-6 / 347), but size and talent aren’t lacking. Cory Meachum (6-3, 323), Anthony Jackson (6-4 / 353), Dominic Padrta (6-3 / 288) and Nick Steffens (6-4 / 288) all are talented and capable to play however many snaps are required.

Tight End One of the happiest coaches on the staff last season when the new recruits arrived was tight end coach Tate Behne, mainly because of the arrival of his two star players in David Johnson and J.T. Jordan. Johnson (6-2 / 268) was forced into action as a true freshman due to limited numbers at the position and filled in well while learning on the fly. Johnson, a big-time blocker and huge target, should emerge as a key receiving threat in the fall with a full year under his belt. Jordan (6-1 / 261) redshirted last season instead of Johnson last season almost by the flip of a coin, the two were that close talent-wise. Both are big enough and mobile enough to block most players they will see and each has good enough hands to be real threats catching the ball. Brandon Henson (6-3 / 245) battled injuries in 2005 but still came back to contribute on special teams. Henson, now a scholaraship player after walking on originally, should provide receiving help and leadership at a position that will be very young.

Defense

Defensive Line What will be seen on the practice field in the spring on the defensive line probably won’t be a true indi- cation of what the line will look like during the fall as several key players are missing spring drills with injuries. But the additional playing time and repetitions received during the spring for several of the younger players are expected to pay huge dividends in the fall. Jon Najm, Brian Flagg, Zelos Abby and Tyler McNeely are all missing spring drills and would either be starting or key reserves. Thanks to some focused recruiting efforts the Indains can still man- age to field a line for the spring. Jamarrow James (6-2 / 275) is the most experienced of all returning linemen going through spring drills and continues to wreak havoc on the line at defensive tackle. James is coming off a solid 2005 campaign and has increased his strength during the winter to cope better with the pile-ups inside during game action. 20062006 SSpringpring PreviewPreview

Brandon Rollins (6-5 / 257) got a lot of playing time at the end of last season while several ends were undergoing surgery. Rollins made the most of his time on the field and showed that the lin- gering pains of his tragic accident three years ago are a distant memory. Rollins is listed as a starter heading into the spring. Reggie Green (6-5 / 255) is another end that stepped in late in 2005 and took advantage of playing time, pleasantly surprising the staff with solid contributions. Green is listed as a starter at end heading into the spring as well. Anthony Harris (6-0 / 238) moved from linebacker to end for the spring to help with depth and feature his talents more at the position. Perhaps no other player did more with limited playing time in 2005 than Curtis Bonds. Bonds (6-4 / 285) took full advantage of his opportunity late in 2005 and parlayed it into a starting role at the nose tackle position heading into the spring. Prince Hickman (6-1 / 289) and Troy White (6-1 / 267) have positioned themselves as the reserves at the tackle positions. Hickman is going through his third spring at ASU and is poised to show off some of his development and challenge for a starting spot. White played sparingly in 2005 after trasferring from junior college, seeing time at tackle and end. With the injuries to the line several young players will be seeing substantial playing time in the spring. Bennie Washington, Alex Carrington, Khari Mays, Jonathan Hissam and Rob Ramage are players expected to impact the line in the spring with the additional snaps. Washington (6-2 / 272), Hissam (6-0 / 273) and Mays (6-2 / 283) are all interior players and all are redshirt freshmen. Ramage (6-3 / 236) and Carrington (6-5 / 257) will see action at the defensive end spots. Ramage is a spring JUCO transfer brought in to bolster the depth at the end spot. Carrington’s 4.7 second 40-yard dash speed coming off the end should be a nice addition for the next four years for the Indians.

Linebacker In the spring of 2005 ASU transitioned from a 4-2-5 defense into a more traditional 4-3. The move worked well in the spring but few could have predicted that ASU would play nearly the entire fall with just five linebackers for three spots. Chris Littleton and Koby McKinnon each moved up from safe- ty spots to start at linebacker and settled in nicely at their new positions, but Devrett Wade was the shinig star as ASU started three linebackers in 2005 that never played at that position at the Division 1 level. Wade (6-0 / 231) patrolled the middle for the Indians and made his presence known with 87 total tackles. He finished the fall with 13 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks to finish second on the team in both categories. Wade finished the season as a second-team linebacker. His speed has earned him a chance to play outside at the “Will” spot during the spring while ASU works on getting more physical players on the field. McKinnon (6-3 / 211) took off at the “Sam” linebacker position and performed very well. He ended with 55 tackles, had two interceptions and another three pass deflections while spending a lot of time on tight ends and playing in space. McKinnon is again listed as the starter heading into spring. Ben Owens (6-2 / 223) brings speed and a physique seemingly carved by an Italian master to the “Mike” position and is listed as the starter there heading into the spring. Owens saw several snaps as a true freshman last season but mostly played on special teams. Littleton (5-11 / 212) showed some effects of missing an entire season in 2005 while learning a new position, but he played the position better as the season progressed and earned a starting role midway through the season. He is listed as McKinnon’s backup heading into spring after recording 38 tackles in 2005. Elias Ellis (5-11 / 215) ended 2005 with 41 tackles and heads into spring as the backup to Wade 20062006 SSpringpring PreviewPreview

at the “Will” spot, giving ASU two very physical and fast players at the position. Matt Taylor (6-3 / 212) redshirted in 2005 after coming to ASU as one of the top safeties in Arkansas as a high school senior. Taylor moved to linebacker in the fall and has started to fill out to play the “Sam” position. Returning from a year’s hiatus is former freshman All-American Josh Williams, vying for a chance at starting at the “Mike” position. Williams (6-1 / 255) sat out last season but returned as a walkon to attempt to earn a scholarship. Williams’ presence in the middle of the lineup could, with the play of Wade and McKinnon, make ASU’s linebacking corps the most feared in the Sun Belt. Daniel Fowler and Tyler Chambers, both walkons, will help fill out spots on the special teams. Safety Any chances of Tyrell Johnson continuing to avoid national recognition came to an abrupt halt in the final regular season game of 2005 when he tallied 25 tackles (20 solo) at North Texas. Johnson (6-1 / 197) finished the season as a first-team all-SBC player and led the team with 112 total tackles (83 solo). Khayyam Burns has benefited from Johnson’s new star power and has quietly become the other major part of the league’s best safety combo. Burns (6-0 / 184) finished second in 2005 in tack- les with 89 and broke up six passes. He and Johnson have started all 23 games at ASU and highlight a position with an abundance of talent. Backing up Johnson at strong safety is the ultra-fast Marcus Brown, who clocked a speedy 4.4 second 40-yard dash in winter workouts. Brown (6-1 / 183) redshirted last season and should give Johnson some much-needed relief during games while seeing time on special teams. Evan Van Dolah (6-2 / 199) is another redshirt from 2005 who big things are expected as his career progresses. An all-around athlete, Van Dolah’s presence behind Burns at the free safety spot gives the Indians a formidable listing on the two-deep. Brandon Williams (6-0 / 202) saw some action on defense in 2005 but played mostly on spe- cial teams. He, along with Steve Reeves (6-1 / 185), will battle for field time and key spots on special teams.

Cornerbacks Few other positions could be as contested this spring as who will get to fill out the two-deep at corner- back. With Montis Harrison still nursing a shoulder surgery, the competition could be a free-for-all this spring. Dominique Williams (5-10 / 172) had periods of brilliance in 2005 after getting a chance to start in the injured Harrison’s spot. Even though falling victim to inexperienced plays on occasion, Williams was impressive in his collegiate debut and is tabbed in a starter’s role heading into spring. With James Johnson graduated the Indians are looking to Darren Toney to fill out the other starter’s role. Toney (5-11 / 185) played several snaps on special teams and in nickel and dime situa- tion in 2005 and proved to be a versatile player. Jerime Henderson (6-0 / 194) and Kelvin Cox (6-0 / 190) aren’t ready to give up on the start- ing spots. Both are experienced and fast, and the coaching staff expect the two starting spots to change hands more than once before the spring drills come to an end. Redshirt freshmen Daylan Walker and L.J. Williams will push for every snap they can. Considered to be the future corners of the team, both Walker and Williams have superior speed and cover abilities and will showcase their skills against ASU’s top receivers in the spring.

Special Teams Special teams play can go a long way toward winning games and the kicking of Eric Neihouse and his propensity to nail last-minute field goals proved that in 2005. But the Indians must find a new starting punter and kicker with no experience returning at either spot while the deep snapper’s job is still up for grabs after Orin Catrett suffered a season-ending in 2005. Ryan Hoormann (5-10 / 222) is expected to challenge for kicking duties this spring but will miss the first part of practice due to a broken bone in his foot. He is expected to be cleared to participate in the second or third week of practice. Josh Arauco is the lone healthy placekicker heading into spring play and will get plenty of chances to impress the staff with Hoornann out of commission. Punting duties will fall of the shoulders of linebacker-turned-fullback Brett Shrable. Shrable (6- 2 / 226) was an outstanding punter in high school and is expected to head into the fall as the top punter on the team. A bevy of players with return skills await chances to show what they can do returning kicks and punts. Darren Toney, Kevin Jones, Gary Vincent, Levi Dejohnette, Jarriel Norman, Chris James and others will all take their shots at grabbing a coveted return spot. The Indians will need to replace the single-season punt return record holder James Johnson, who has graduated. No other position on the team needs to replace so much, but special teams will rely on a fresh- man kicker in 2006, regardless of if a current player on the team is selected or a newcomer takes the spot in the fall. Special teams play will be a big question mark all spring long.

Summary Inexperice at quarterback and on special teams may burden the other skill positions and the defense to find different ways to post points until the group catches up. ASU’s defense could be among the best in the conference are should improve upon the 64th-rated defense from 2005. The offense, which finished 62nd nationally last season, may have some issues to start the season while trying to find replacements for the top-two quarterbacks and running backs from 2005. Still, the team is deep, fast and gaining experience. Going 5-2 in league play was a great way to turn the corner for an ASU pro- gram that was in a very big need of a positive. The spring will go a long way toward nailing down a starting quarterback, tailback depth and some special teams issues. QuotesQuotes FromFrom CoachCoach SSteveteve RobertRobertss

On The Addition Of Instant Replay For The 2006 Season “It will change the flow of the game, but the bottom line is everybody wants the call to be right. Whether it is for your or against you, you want the fairest opportunities. If we can get them right, then I’m all for it.”

On His Feelings Of The Incoming Recruiting Class “I’m excited about it. We won’t know a lot about them and their contributions, until they get here. A lot of things are involved in that other than their talent, like position needs, injuries, how well they transition to college life. I feel real good about our class.”

Depth Now Compared To When He First Arrived “It is better than when we first got here, but with all of our injuries, it is still a question mark. Hopefully, we can get a lot of those guys for the fall. They’re all rehabbing very well, but with any injury you never know about their full recovery until you see them get out there and do it. I think some of them could come back even better than they were. As for the overall depth of our football team, I feel good about our depth in the defensive backfield, our depth at linebacker. We’re not as deep at the defensive end as we were a year ago because of injuries. On the offensive line, once we get our injured players back, we’ll have a lot of depth there. We are inexperienced at tight end. I feel great about our depth at wide receiver. I think our depth at tailback is good and we’re OK at fullback, just depending on how we come through per- formance-wise there. And at quarterback, we’re sitting here at two-deep right now going into spring.”

QB Situation “We feel real good about the talent we have at quarterback in Travis Hewitt and Corey Leonard. The obvious drawback is a lack of experience. We were fortunate to win six ballgames last year and in many of those we were fighting for our lives and didn’t have an opportunity to get other quarterbacks involved in the game as much as we would have liked. But we feel good about their ability level and their desire to be competitive. We’ve just got to get them more experience.”

On The Addition Of Turf To The Football Field “The addition of turf will be huge for us. It will eliminate a lot of the stress of scheduling of and practice planning. It is something that most players are familiar with these days and like to play on it.”

Benefits Of Playing In The New Orleans Bowl “We’ve seen a lot of benefits of the success we had last season during offseason and winter conditioning. The overall feel of our program and the attitude of the participants has shown they are willing to work for more success like that. The extra practice time really gives us a jump-start on spring football because we were able to get a lot of those young guys some work, get them back involved more in our program than just being scout team guys. I think we’re eager to get back to football rather than running and lifting.” 2006 Arkansas State University Spring Football Numeric Roster
