The following year they were engaged in covering the siege of Hay, and the only British officer killed during this campaign was Captain Sacheverell of the 14th. In 1695 they were employed at various sieges, notably at that of Naniur, where, as Tidcombe's Foot, they "crowned themselves with glory ;" and throughout the later battles of that year they followed the dashing lead of the gallant Lord Cutts. For the following two or three years they were stationed in Ireland, whence, however, they sent detachments at various times to join the British army in Spain. When Prince Charles Edward made his attempt in 1715 the 14th were summoned to Scotland, and fought as Jaspar Clayton's Foot at Dunblane, and four years later at Glenshiel, where Captains Moore and Heighinton were wounded. In 1727 they went to Gibraltar, of which their Colonel, Jaspar Clayton, was Lieutenant-Governor, and assisted in its successful defence against the Spaniards, remaining there for several years. The 14th were not at Dettingen, but amongst those who fell there was their gallant Colonel, who was on the staff. They fought at Falkirk in 1746 as Price's Foot, and were in the first line in the division of General Cholmondcley.

  • 1914 in Yorkshire Is a York Museums Trust Initiative
SOMEWHERE INTRODUCTION AT THE FRONT Michael Woodward Chief Operating Officer, York Museums Trust The First World War broke out one hundred years ago. It seems only natural that so many museums and other cultural institutions are commemorating the occasion in so many different ways. In August 1914, few people would have expected that when war was declared it would have such extraordinary consequences and that we would still be paying attention to it a hundred years later. But it serves us well to remember and reflect together on great historic events and there are few, if any, as momentous as the Great War. At York Museums Trust we will be commemorating the war in various ways, not least through a major new exhibition at York Castle Museum, 1914: When the World Changed Forever. In collaboration with the Imperial War Museum and 88 partners, we have also created this booklet to give you a taste of what’s going on across Yorkshire throughout the year. You’ll discover that there is a huge range of exhibitions, events and activities commemorating the anniversary. We hope this will be a useful first point of call to help you plan your visits close to home and further afield. To inspire you, it also contains some fascinating stories of the impact of the war on Yorkshire itself. And if you want to check the latest information, visit 1914.org/Yorkshire. 2 Somewhere at the Front 52 The Home Front The sketches that appear on the cover are disappearing rum supplies, the difficulties by Albert Ernest V.

  • Baor Order of Battle July 1989
BAOR ORDER OF BATTLE JULY 1989 “But Pardon, and Gentles all, The flat unraised spirits that have dared On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth So great an object….” Chorus, Henry V Act 1, Prologue This document began over five years ago from my frustration in the lack of information (or just plain wrong information) regarding the British Army of The Rhine in general and the late Cold War in particular. The more I researched through books, correspondence, and through direct questions to several “Old & Bold” on Regimental Association Forums, the more I became determined to fill in this gap. The results are what you see in the following pages. Before I begin a list of acknowledgements let me recognize my two co-authors, for this is as much their work as well as mine. “PM” was instrumental in sharing his research on the support Corps, did countless hours of legwork, and never failed to dig up information on some of my arcane questions. “John” made me “THINK” British Army! He has been an inspiration; a large part of this work would have not been possible without him. He added the maps and the color formation signs, as well as reformatting the whole document. I can only humbly say that these two gentlemen deserve any and all accolades as a result of this document. Though we have put much work into this document it is far from finished. Anyone who would like to contribute information of their time in BAOR or sources please contact me at [email protected]. The document will be updated with new information periodically.
