Ross Bassett When is a Microprocessor not a Microprocessor? The Industrial Construction of Semiconductor Innovation I In the early 1990s an integrated circuit first made in 1969 and thus ante dating by two years the chip typically seen as the first microprocessor (Intel's 4004), became a microprocessor for the first time. The stimulus for this piece ofindustrial alchemy was a patent fight. A microprocessor patent had been issued to Texas Instruments, and companies faced with patent infringement lawsuits were looking for prior art with which to challenge it. 2 This old integrated circuit, but new microprocessor, was the ALl, designed by Lee Boysel and used in computers built by his start-up, Four-Phase Systems, established in 1968. In its 1990s reincarnation a demonstration system was built showing that the ALI could have oper ated according to the classic microprocessor model, with ROM (Read Only Memory), RAM (Random Access Memory), and I/O (Input/ Output) forming a basic computer. The operative words here are could have, for it was never used in that configuration during its normal life time. Instead it was used as one-third of a 24-bit CPU (Central Processing Unit) for a series ofcomputers built by Four-Phase.3 Examining the ALl through the lenses of the history of technology and business history puts Intel's microprocessor work into a different per spective. The differences between Four-Phase's and Intel's work were industrially constructed; they owed much to the different industries each saw itselfin.4 While putting a substantial part ofa central processing unit on a chip was not a discrete invention for Four-Phase or the computer industry, it was in the semiconductor industry. -

Lee CSE Professor Zoran Popovi´c CSE Game balancing is the fine-tuning phase in which a functioning game is adjusted to be deep, fair, and interesting. Balancing is difficult and time-consuming, as designers must repeatedly tweak parameters and run lengthy playtests to evaluate the effects of these changes. Only recently has computer science played a role in balancing, through quantitative balance analysis. Such methods take two forms: analytics for repositories of real gameplay, and the study of simulated players. In this work I rectify a deficiency of prior work: largely ignoring the players themselves. I argue that variety among players is the main source of depth in many games, and that analysis should be contextualized by the behavioral properties of players. Concretely, I present a formalization of diverse forms of game balance. This formulation, called `restricted play', reveals the connection between balancing concerns, by effectively reducing them to the fairness of games with restricted players. Using restricted play as a foundation, I contribute four novel methods of quantitative balance analysis. I first show how game balance be estimated without players, using sim- ulated agents under algorithmic restrictions. -

Additionally, Scott is focused on driving talent development through succession planning, programs for “high-potentials,” and strategic workforce planning. Scott graduated with honors from UIUC in 1992, with a B.A. in English. After graduating, he took a temporary call center job with Motorola Inc. that turned into a fourteen-year stint with the telecommunications giant. Mid-way through that time, while working as a project manager on a major system implementation, Scott was asked to deliver training for sales and customer service personnel. From that point, he took a new career direction, focusing on training and employee development. While at Motorola, Scott completed an MBA at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Knowledge gained through that program was essential when working with business partners to understand how best to impact their business goals and results. -

Garrett (1894-1973) was the President of the American Psychological Association in 1946 and Chair of Psychology at Columbia Universityfrom 1941 to 1955. In the 1950s Garrett helped organize an international group of scholars dedi- cated to preventing race mixing, preserving segregation, and promoting the princi- ples of early 20th century eugenics and “race hygiene.” Garrett became a leader in the fight against integration and collaborated with those who sought to revitalize the ideology of National Socialism. I discuss the intertwined history the Interna- tional Association for the Advancement of Ethnology and Eugenics (IAAEE),the journal Mankind Quarterly, the neofascist Northern League, and the ultra-right- wing political group, the Liberty Lobby. The use of psychological research and expertise in the promotion of neofascism is examined. GREENSPAN The Neurosciences Institute, San Diego, California 92121 and The Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind, University of California at San Diego, La Jolla, California 92093-0526 Correspondence: [email protected] Recent results from a variety of different kinds of experiments, mainly using behavior as an assay, and ranging from labora- tory selection experiments to gene interaction studies, show that a much wider range of genes can affect phenotype than those identified as “core genes” in classical mutant screens. Moreover, very pleiotropic genes can produce specific phenotypes when mild variants are combined. These studies also show that gene networks readily change configuration and the relation- ships between interacting genes in response to the introduction of additional genetic variants, suggesting that the networks range widely and have a high degree of flexibility and malleability. Such flexibility, in turn, offers a plausible mechanism for the molding of phenotypes through microevolution, as a prerequisite to making a suitable environment for the acceptance of newly arising large-effect mutations in the transition from microevolution to macroevolution. The concept of single-gene mutant analysis to study the can (and do) affect phenotype than those normally consid- mechanisms of behavior is now so deeply embedded as an ered to be core genes.
