2019 Recruiting Class Signed • Rutgers unveiled its 2019 recruiting class, as JoJo Aragona, Robert Kan- niard and Jackson Turley ­all signed National Letters of Intent (NLIs) to compete for the Scarlet Knights next fall.

According to FloWrestling, Aragona is the No. 1 recruit at 141 pounds and No. 6 overall recruit in the country. Turley is the No. 3 recruit at 184 pounds and No. 39 overall prospect nationally, and Kanniard is the No. 7 overall recruit at 165 pounds and the No. 66 overall recruit.

Six Scarlet Knights combined for 19 2018 Nick Suriano (2nd) 125 victories and 42.5 team points en route to an 11th-place result at nationals, which included the program’s Scott DelVecchio (6th) 133 first national finalist in Nick Suriano, as well as a sixth-place finisher in Scott DelVecchio. 2017 Anthony Ashnault (6th) 141 The program earned multiple All-Americans for the third consecutive year this past season. During the dual Ken Theobold (7th) 149 campaign, RU collected eight wins, including victories over four ranked foes, and added its best finish at the 2016 Anthony Ashnault (4th) 141 Midlands Championships in its history with its second-place result. Rutgers finished 2017-18 ranked 19th Anthony Perrotti (8th) 165 in the final coaches’ poll, while six Scarlet Knights closed out the season ranked in their respective weight 2015 Anthony Ashnault (8th) 141 classes by FloWrestling. Anthony Perrotti (8th) 157 The Rutgers faithful have taken notice of what Goodale and his staff have created, as the Scarlet Knights CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS UNDER GOODALE finished fourth nationally in average home attendance for the 2017-18 season with 5,070 for its six home YEAR WRESTLER (PLACE) WEIGHT duals at the RAC. In total, 32,764 fans watched RU wrestle in Piscataway this past season, which included 2017 Anthony Ashnault (Big Ten) 141 the first RAC sellout in program history when Rutgers hosted Penn State in front of 8,321 fans on Jan. 28. 2016 Anthony Ashnault (Big Ten) 141 It was the third consecutive season the Scarlet Knights finished within the top-5 in home attendance, as the 2011 Scott Winston (EIWA) 165 team sold more than 2,000 season ticket packages for this past year’s campaign – the third-straight year RU sold the most season tickets in its history.

The investment in the winning culture Goodale and company have set is also evident. Rutgers is one year away from opening the RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Per- formance Center, which will be the new home for the program. The state-of-the-art facility on the Livingston Campus will feature three regulation practice mats, a 30-person team locker room as well as offices for coaches and support staff.

The Jackson, N.J., native took over the Rutgers program following an impressive seven-year stint as head coach at his alma mater, Jackson Memorial High School. In seven seasons, Goodale compiled an overall record of 155-16, leading his squad to the top ranking in the state in 2006 and 2007. The legendary Jersey high school wrestling coach was inducted into the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame on Nov. 7, 2009.

Goodale was named the New Jersey State Coach of the Year three times, while also earning District 21 and Region VI Coach of the Year accolades three times during his tenure with the Jaguars. Goodale coached four New Jersey State Champions and five New Jersey State runner-ups, along with 16 additional state placewinners. In total, he has coached a total of 41 District 21 Champions and 10 Region VI Champions. Goodale led his teams to two Group IV State Championships, as well as four Central Jersey Group IV Sectional titles. Each season Goodale spent with Jackson Memorial, the Jaguars were crowned District 21 Team Champions, as well as winning four Class A-South Shore Conference titles.

Goodale wrestled for Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, earning his bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 1995. He then went to New Jersey City University where he earned a certification in Special Education in 1997. As a collegiate wrestler, Goodale made three trips to the NCAA Championships, as well as placing second at the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Tournament twice in his career. During his time with the Bald Eagles, the team was ranked as high as ninth in the country. Goodale finished with 99 wins at Lock Haven. Goodale and his wife Lisa are the parents of Shelby and Zachary, and reside in Toms River.

13 ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH: DONNY PRITZLAFF Associate head coach Donny Pritzlaff, a two-time national champion, world medalist, and Big Ten Conference veteran as a coach and wrestler, enters his fifth season with Rutgers wrestling in 2018-19. Pritzlaff has been integral in the Scarlet Knights’ rise to the top of the collegiate wrestling landscape.

Since Pritzlaff arrived “On the Banks” in 2014, Rutgers has had 28 NCAA qualifiers, 23 Big Ten Championships placewinners, seven All-Americans and two Big Ten individual champions. The Scarlet Knights have picked up 50 dual victories during his tenure as associate head coach, which includes winning dual records in each of the past four seasons.

Pritlaff has played a crucial role on the recruiting trail for the Scarlet Knights, as Rutgers inked the No. 12 recruiting class – ac- cording to Intermat ­– in the country in 2018. The class is headlined by Billy Janzer (No. 2, 182 lbs), Nicolas Aguilar (No. 4, 120 lbs) and Jake Benner (No. 16, 138 lbs), who are all rated within the Top 20 of their respective weight classes.

A decorated collegiate and freestyle wrestler, Pritzlaff owns more than 11 years of collegiate coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level. Prior to Rutgers, the Lyndhurst, N.J., native spent three seasons at the University of Michigan (2011-13) as an assistant wrestling coach after spending five years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as the associate head wrestling coach.

Prior to arriving at Michigan, Pritzlaff served five seasons as an assistant coach at Wisconsin (2007-11), including the last two as associate head coach. He helped lead the Badgers to top-10 team finishes at the NCAA Championships in each of the last three seasons, including a fourth-place finish in 2010.

As a collegiate wrestler at Wisconsin (1998-2001), Pritzlaff compiled one of the most impressive careers in the program’s history. Pritzlaff was a two-time NCAA 165-pound champion (2000, 2001) and four-time NCAA All-American, placing fifth as a junior at 165 pounds in 1999 and sixth as a freshman at 150 pounds in 1998.

ASSISTANT COACH: JOHN LEONARDIS John Leonardis has been with Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale since his first day “On the Banks” and has played a vital role in the program’s rise to national prominence over the past 11 years. With the help of Leonardis, the Scarlet Knights have pro- duced eight All-Americans in the past five seasons, and since 2009, have earned two top-10 finishes and seven top-25 finishes in the USA Today/ NWCA Division I Coaches Poll.

No stranger to the recruiting trail, Leonardis has had a direct impact on RU’s success hauling in the best talent in the country. Rutgers inked the No. 12 recruiting class – according to Intermat –­ in the country in 2018. The class is headlined by Billy Janzer (No. 2, 182 lbs), Nicolas Aguilar (No. 4, 120 lbs) and Jake Benner (No. 16, 138 lbs), who are all rated within the Top 20 of their respective weight classes.

During Leonardis’ tenure, RU has also had three conference champions, 64 NCAA Championship bids, 23 Big Ten Conference Championship placewinners and 42 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships placewinners. The 2017-18 season was arguably the most notable in program history, as Rutgers produced its best team finish at the 2018 NCAA Championships in Cleveland. Six Scarlet Knights combined for 19 victories and 42.5 team points en route to an 11th-place result at nationals, which included the program’s first national finalist in Nick Suriano, as well as a sixth-place finisher in Scott DelVecchio.

Leonardis was a three year varsity wrestling letterwinner at Lehigh before graduating in 1997. He was an EIWA Champion in 1996 in the 190-pound weight class. The Sea Girt, N.J., native played football and wrestled for Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J. His senior year he was a captain for both wrestling and football, leading each program to a State Championship.

During his wrestling career, Leonardis was a four-time National Prep placewinner and champion and an Amateur Wrestling News All-American. On the coaching front, Leonardis has extensive experience. For six years (2000-06), he compiled a .720 winning percentage as the head coach at Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J.

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH: BRIAN MURPHY Brian Murphy, a four-time NCAA qualifier and 2015 All-American at the University of Michigan, begins his first season as a volunteer assistant coach with Rutgers wrestling. Murphy served as an undergraduate assistant coach last year at UM prior to his arrival “On the Banks”.

Murphy collected 75 varsity wins during his time in Ann Arbor from 2013-17, which included four consecutive trips to nation- als as a Wolverine. As a sophomore in 2014-15, Murphy wrestled to a 30-12 mark and a seventh-place finish at NCAAs, as he secured his place as an All-American at 157 pounds.

The Carol Stream, Illinois, native placed all four years at the Big Ten Championships and picked up a bronze medal at the event as a junior.

Murphy graduated from the University of Michigan in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in English.
