6 President’s Report

The growth and progression of our club can provide great rewards and satisfaction for all involved in playing, supporting and administrating. Often the good will be accompanied by the difficult and this season provided much of the former and an element of the latter. Overall success of the season however could be defined as our strongest on field performances ever, an unparalleled range of well supported social activity and strong growth again in all areas.

This past season provided a number of significant individual achievements. A1 Dave Moss’ breaking of Mick Riggall and Paul Brown’s 34 year old record for highest individual innings of 169 in a one day game was nothing short of amazing. This feat will be mentioned often and talked about for years to come. Ewen Chung’s battle with Pete Henriksen for the Shearer was so close only the Secretary knew the winner before the Presentation night. Then there’s Matt Moore and Kev Faulkner’s heroic efforts to save the Premiership for the B2s. Matt with a badly torn calf, and Kev with a broken finger managed to bat out the best part of an hour late on day two of the Grand Final. This was just enough to see the team win in one of the most incredible and nerve wracking games I’ve ever witnessed. In the Juniors the good news just keeps on coming with Angas Demol and Liam Filmer-Ramsay’s selection in the emerging Blues development squad and the performances of Mikaela Turik in the girls U13 Rep Team. Nick McLachlan won the prestigious Eric Palmer Bat Award for best junior cricketer, our second ever winner after Terry McTeigue in 72/73. Congratulations to the U10 Div 1 Surge team for their premiership win.

In setting up Senior A grade squads for 07/08, some difficult decisions were made which raised questions about player selections and squad formations that were not easy to deal with. It is not the first time the issue of ‘selections’ or committee involvement has come up nor will it be the last. Up until this season teams have invariably formed around a key person (usually the captain with access to player contacts) and left to their own devices. Players have occasionally flittered willingly between grades but rarely if ever has the committee intervened in the organisation and management of teams – there is not the time for a start. If committee involvement is required, there should be one unwritten rule: “Players may be instructed to play in a lower grade but only asked to play higher”. I feel this is probably the way it should remain at our level of cricket however as grades evolve and the Club’s strength and player numbers continue to increase, this issue may surface again. The decisions made were based on the realities of player numbers and the best perceived outcomes for the club in the short and longer term. This meant that some individual plans and aspirations were affected and not resolved to the satisfaction of all parties prior to the start of last season which was disappointing.

The ‘Ten Seasons Ago’ section recalls then President David Quarford’s running battle with the Junior Association over a controversial new directive entitled ‘Pathways For Cricket’. The section gives more detail on this incident but in short, implementation of this policy threatened our newly re-established junior team and in the longer term, the existence of the Club. On the tenth anniversary of this tumultuous time for Dave and the club, it is fitting that Dave was awarded Life Membership to the Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association at the June Presentation Night. This is great recognition for Dave’s commitment to junior cricket through coaching and administration including work and direction given on the new Junior Association’s constitution.

Our project work continues slowly. Early in the season we were successful in applying for a Commonwealth Government small equipment grant. We received $2200 to purchase a fantastic stainless steel barbeque, a big fold-up marquee and a blower. All of this went into our new storage cage in the Youth club which is already bursting at the seams with gear. A big thankyou to Luke Ireland for his work on building the storage rack. The CPCC Museum also opened in the Youth Club foyer displaying old club equipment and memorabilia from the past 50 years. Unfortunately attempts to get Warringah Shire Council to better prepare the ground for cricket weren’t as successful. This year we did eventually get them to lay grass sods around the pitch and on the run-ups however they were laid in the middle of the dry spell and didn’t water them. The grass died before the weeks of rain set in after Christmas which coincided with the sprinklers finally coming on. Hopefully we can get Council to coordinate their contractors a little better next season but it is a start.

It is with much sadness that I report the passing of Life Member Bert Elsworthy. Anybody who knew Bert would acknowledge what a sad loss this is to his family, friends and the club. Personally, Bert and his good mate Vic Huxley were my coaches during the Saturday Morning Net Squad and Bert has been involved with my time at the club ever since. Of course he played for many years prior to that and was President between 1974 and 1976. I know I also speak for Dave Quarford in saying that Bert provided great support and advice to us whilst fulfilling the role of President of the Club. Whether it was advice sought by us, or occasionally a succinct, straight to the point comment by Bert on something he didn’t agree with, Bert’s opinion was the guide. I know I’ve found myself on more than one occasion applying the measure “What would Bert think”? His keen eye and sharp mind would always keep us Presidents on our toes as he examined the Annual Report & financial statement at the AGM. Bert’s presence in that front row will be sorely missed. The Club also lost Peter Browne and Dave Harland during the season. Both these cricketers were clubmen before my time but I know they were extremely talented players whose health prevented them from going on to greater achievements on the cricket field. Milton will speak more for them later in the report.

Many hours of data entry on the E84 and at home has finally resulted in a comprehensive and sortable database of senior player statistics. Whilst there is still some refinement and more information that can be entered, the database is a relatively accurate reflection of every player to have had a statistic recorded during the past 53 years of our club – all 913 of them. From Ackland to Young, the database provides some interesting facts: CPCC batsmen have scored 390478 runs in 30065 innings at 15.15, CPCC bowlers have taken 25700 wickets at 15.53 off 108498 overs and there has been approximately 936864 Shearer points awarded. The gaps in our statistical history are mostly with catches and some seasons where Captains were a little apathetic towards completing scorebooks. This isn’t an issue confined to the past as even today much prodding by Robert or myself of some captains is required to have books completed. It is only by having these completed records that projects such as this can be achieved and I know how much satisfaction most players receive by viewing a complete record of their cricket career with CPCC. Completion of this project coincides with the introduction of Results Vault which will allow even better record keeping and analysis. Results Vault is also a quantum leap for our Junior and Senior Associations in the dissemination of up to date information on draws, results and player performances.

The Club is in a strong position to look to the future with grand ideas and to pursue ambitious projects. Before a ball has been bowled in 08/09 we look like sending 3 junior teams to compete in the Kookaburra Cup in Canberra in the October school holidays. Our grand ideas relate mostly to ground and facility improvements with priority one the creation of a satisfactory playing surface at Vic Huxley Oval. It is hoped that Project Acorn, the development of Club House facilities at Collaroy Plateau Park, will also be progressed following Collaroy Cougars likely success at getting a clubhouse built at Griffith Park. And then there is England 2009. The green light has been given and the itinerary is looking fantastic with proposed fixtures in Singapore and Amsterdam making CPCC truly international. I invite everyone to participate in what looks like a great season ahead. Col Huxley President 7 Secretary’s Report CPCC rolled out another memorable season with many highlights. Firstly, a well deserved congratulations to Adam Pressley’s B2 Team for their Premiership. You could write a thesis on the highs and lows of cricket that this premiership decider produced. From my personal perspective, I went from spectator on day 1 to 13th man on day 2 when Matt Moore and Kevin Faulkner were both sidelined with injuries. The Plateau side produced some of the finest camaraderie; I just wish it could be bottled. The game had the high emotion of a first innings victory, the desperation of almost losing outright and the match culminated in a ‘pressure’ decision by the umpire. All six afternoon teams had great seasons. The A1’s had the best team in the entire competition but could not convert this into a premiership. A2’s were looking good up to the Christmas break but suffered a player shortage. A3’s made it to the Semi’s, but fought an uphill battle against the minor premiers. B1’s lost players at the crucial semi final time and could not progress to the grand final. Our B3 development side lead by Sam Steindl needs much praise for making the Grand Final. There was very little in the decider and the lads should be very proud of their season.

CPCC afternoon teams remained at 6 this year. The table below shows how the afternoon teams finished the season.

Team Regular Season After the finals A1 Minor Premiers 3rd A2 6th - A3 4th 4th B1 2nd 3rd B2 Minor Premiers PREMIERS B3 2nd Runners Up

Juniors – The graph on page 6 of this report paints a stunning picture as to how well the CPCC Juniors are progressing. Adding another 2 teams to make 17 teams seems inconceivable, but is a testament to the great work off the field all year round by the people that organise registration days, training sessions, and picnics and also attend meetings throughout the year to keep the game flowing smoothly all season long. Congratulations to Vicki Carden and John Jackson who received CPCC Life membership at the AGM last year, which they thoroughly deserved. More of these CPCC Juniors played in the afternoon B3 development squad and many more are queuing up to play in the approaching season. The B3’s had a great season, ending as Runners Up which is a fine performance on their first year in afternoon cricket. The Juniors picnic at Clontarf was another huge crowd of up to 400 players, parents, managers and coaches. I can’t thank those involved enough.

Financial – For the second season in a row the Club has produced a profit of over $6,000. We are blessed to have Toby Horstead as our treasurer. Toby’s efforts in debt collection have been excellent and he has been a significant factor in this excellent financial result. Something that would assist our treasurer greatly would be a more prompt payment of fees by some players. A reminder that fees are due to be paid by the end of the 2nd game of the season. Our Sponsors at the Brookvale Hotel also deserve our sincere thanks, Michael Patterson and Alex have provided a great spot for our players to relax after some exhausting days playing cricket. If I could ask our players to continue attending the Brookvale Hotel, it will ensure the sponsorship remains strong.

Presentation Night – Another fun night was enjoyed at the CPCC Presentation Night held on Friday 2 May 2008. A crowd of approximately 70 of the CPCC faithful enjoyed photos, trophies, spring rolls & stats. One of the photo’s that brought the house down was the x-ray of Nathan Storey’s dislocated finger (see Broken Finger Gallery on page 26). Please don’t ever try to relocate a dislocated finger; if this should ever happen “do not pass go” and head straight for the nearest x-ray centre. Otherwise the aforementioned finger will end up looking like Ray Boswell’s. The Presentation Night is also a chance for the Club to get together as a whole and swap stories on how all teams went throughout the year. The club farewelled long standing player, Greg Bruckard who has decided to hang up his boots. Greg, you are welcome back anytime. Sewelly, I’m sorry but you can’t finish on a diamond duck, your retirement request is declined.

Major Awards – As Club statistician I had the honour of finding out first, who won the Bruce Shearer Trophy. Well done to Ewen Chung who narrowly beat Pete Henriksen for the Club highest honour. Both players had brilliant seasons and both deserve recognition for the stats they produced. Mossy’s incredible innings of 179*, breaking a 33 year old record was the most remarkable knock I have ever witnessed. To break the record is one thing, but to smash around the bowlers from the defending premiers and then hit a new high score in a one day match is astounding. Congratulations to Steve Carden (B&B Award), and all other award winners.

Social Scene – Plateau’s social scene set another blistering pace this year. If the Social Scene was a cricket team Camo & Luke would be the opening duo – the Batman and Robin of social activities. Thanks again for running all the activities and the efforts you put in. Brendo converted his fancy dress knowledge as Steve Irwin last year to take the top honours as Darth Vader at the Top BBQ Chinese restaurant at the Christmas Dinner and Trivia Night. A great day was had at the annual Brooky Challenge. Well done to the Breakers on winning the Chewy Cup in a close fought battle. Nelson Bay was another rampaging success, but what the hell have they done to the Nelson Bay RSL.

Thanks to everyone for all your support. This time next year we will be returning from our Tour of England. If the 2009 tour is half as good as the 2005 tour, it will be awesome. The Committee has worked well together again and this puts the whole club in a strong and steady position for the season ahead. See you back at the Brookvale Hotel.

9 10 Seasons Ago (Season 1997/98)

Two very significant individual milestones and a great team performance highlighted an action packed 1997/98 season, the forty third for the club. It was the season that Bob Williams reached 1000 wickets for CPCC, Paul Brown equalled Mike Riggall’s long standing club record of 169 for most runs in an innings and Ben Ireland led the B4s to a Premiership. These magnificent achievements were almost overshadowed by conflict with the Junior Association over their directive that CPCC would not be allowed to enter our single junior team the following season.

President Quarford fought a running battle throughout this season to ensure the survival of the then only junior squad which had graduated from Kanga cricket. The infamous ‘Pathways for Local Cricket’ document handed down by Cricket NSW which mandated that Clubs should have a minimum of 3 junior teams was to be ruthlessly implemented by the Association. Dave also protected their interests on the field coaching the likes of Tom Carden, Nick Dousset and Jack Ritchie. In a nice touch of irony ten years on, two of our juniors have been selected in the emerging ‘Blues’ squad. The A1s were captained by Mark Christensen who led the way with the ball scaring out 29 batsmen. Rob Minnett’s 573 runs for the season was a team and association high. It is also a career high year for Rob. A rollercoaster win-loss year saw the team threaten the finals one minute and finishing 6th the next. In the A2s, Captain Jackson’s best laid plans ended up with a last place finish with batting being diagnosed as the deficiency. The only highlights came with the ball as Greg Bruckard captured 40 wickets and more memorably, Bob Williams took his 1000th club wicket. A big celebration back at the Time & Tide marked the occasion. High drama surrounded the A3’s season from start to finish. Paul Brown’s record equalling innings of 169 started the season in spectacular fashion. Captain Kehoe mistakenly informed Browny that he in fact had broken the record and Paul promptly holed out to mid-off the very next ball. In rare appearances for CPCC, Barry Moss scored a 119 whilst on not such a rare occasion Dom ‘Happy’ Tilden tore strips off team mate & umpire Chris ‘Trigger Finger’ Jack after an LBW decision. The dramatic season climaxed however in the Semi-final when, like the front cover of the CSW Scorebook, Chris Jack was run out on a direct hit from fine leg going for the winning run. The tied result did no favours to our team. Speaking of favours, Robbie Herbert did a hell of a lot of favours for the B4s. Throughout Herbert’s Shearer winning season, he tallied an incredible 1354 points by taking 601 runs and 61 wickets. Supported by the likes of Luke Ireland, Matt Thompson & Mark Hoy, the B4s took out the title after finishing last the season prior.

Social Secretary Pete Henriksen reported on a big social season including the move to a new location for the Xmas dinner. The Golden Plateau staff served Club members for the first and last time whilst a special laminated edition of the ‘Watertower’ newsletter served as placemats. This durable edition included priceless information such as “Top ten tips for avoiding Saturday umpiring duty”. The night and afterwards was best summed up by the two Englishmen who travelled from their accommodation in the Eastern Suburbs to play that day and attend the dinner. They were still in the Huxley’s backyard in Stella St at 5am and were last seen trying to locate the entrance to the ‘Southy Track’ in order to get down to Pittwater Rd and catch a bus home. In other happenings, Rob Van Dam won the Golf Day at Bayview and Pete introduced ‘Towerball’ – the craze that swept the Plateau and proved lucrative financially for the club. Bert Elsworthy Life Member Bert Elsworthy passed on in November, 2007 aged 87. Bert played the game to win if possible, to accept defeat with a smile, and to cast considerable doubt as to whether he was out LBW. A fine wicket keeper/batsman, great leader and friend, and a clubman always. Also among his many credits was a two year term of President of our great club. Bert worked for the Education Department becoming Head Teacher and Director of the Furniture Manufacturing section at Sydney Technical College.

Dave Harland David passed on in June 2008 on the North Coast of NSW. He was aged 57. David was the elder of two sons of Barry and Noelene Harland . David played in our first Saturday Morning Team and in the Afternoon Grades. He enjoyed success as a bowler and at batting and was selected in his age group representative teams, where he performed with merit. His health was not good. This hindered his development and around the late ‘teens he gradually dropped out of playing cricket. With most generous and loving support by his family he was able to live an active life on the North Coast of NSW.

Peter Browne Peter was a member of the 4th grade team in the first season of the club. He had played the previous season in the NSW Churches Competition with the Collaroy Plateau Baptist Church team led by Pastor Jim Rogers and Vic Huxley. As a batsman, Peter was a talent as shown by his progression into the Manly District first XI. The previous season with the Plateau he had scored three centuries and then scored a century playing for the Manly Telegraph Shield team. He was expected to become a useful cricketer in a few years. He also bowled well. This was as a slow bowler with a very awkward action that seemed to require every twist and turn his body could tolerate. His first season was encouraging. Pete also could play Rugby. He was selected in the Manly District first XV where he played inside centre. During this time he sustained an ankle injury that, although no break could be found, swelled considerably and never completely reduced. Peter regarded this permanent injury as a trophy to highlight any conversation about rugby or to expose it for critical analysis and sympathy, to any audience one or more.

Pete shone at school, always near the top of the class and competed vigorously with another cricketer of note Michael Heaseman for Dux of Manly Boy’s High. Both went on to Sydney University. At the end of first year Pete’s health changed and he was not able to produce his talent again. He returned to play cricket and baseball with the Plateau but everything had changed. I was always interested in Peter because my eldest brother had a similar experience at approximately the same age. He was less affected than Pete, although it changed his life. In regard to him, my parents spoke to us kids many times about “being grateful of our lot in life”.

What might have been of Peter. Cricketer and footballer of note. Academic? Father of a mob of kids??? I am glad I knew him at this best and his worst.

13 Major Club Awards

The ‘B & B’ Trophy (Brian & Barbara Moore)

This perpetual senior Club Award was added during the 2001/02 season courtesy of ex- clubman Brian Moore. Brian, who re-visited the Plateau for the first time since returning to England after the ’72 season, was thrilled to see the Club continuing on as strong as ever after all these years. Brian and his son Ian who moved to Australia from England in the sixties, played for several seasons with the Plateau with Brian captaining the 1971/72 premiership winning C2 team.

It was agreed by the Executive that the Award be presented to a player who displays an effort, both on and off the field which is above and beyond that which is normally expected. The winner is decided by vote of nominations received from team Captains.

This year the presentation of the ‘B & B’ Trophy is to Steve Carden. Steve has been a familiar figure at the nets during the week and out in the middle on Saturday mornings over the last ten years coaching junior teams. During this time Steve has also rediscovered his own cricket abilities playing in B grade and last year, with son Tom in the B3 development team. If he’s not running it, Steve is always quick to offer assistance and participation in just about every area of Club activity. Rothmans sponsored this trophy, first awarded in 1968. Originally introduced for the winner of the Club’s Annual Single Wicket Competition, this award now includes the winner of a Double Wicket Competition, a variation of the single wicket concept. Both events involve club members (individually or in pairs) playing off against each other over competition rounds to decide finalists and eventually a winner/winning pair. Results are determined by runs scored and wickets taken against drawn opponents. The event was resurrected in 2006 after a 17 year hiatus.

Touring Trophies

These two Perpetual Trophies were created during the 50th Anniversary Tour of England. Players are eligible for these awards by playing in any official CPCC touring match (either International or Domestic) or official home ‘host’ matches against visiting touring teams. 16 Social Secretary’s Report

The 2007/2008 season saw another great year socially for the club, with several events held and enjoyed not just by the players but also their partners, family members and friends. It was especially pleasing to see so many senior players back at Brooky Pub after the games, getting involved in the Player Of The Day Mug, swapping cricket tales and partaking much coveted Golden Duck Award.

Apart from the AGM which was a good night for everyone to catch up and talk about the up coming season, our first social event was the Christmas dinner at the Top BBQ Restaurant. The theme this year was 80s movie and TV characters it was a great turnout with everyone getting into the spirit of things. A lot of people went all out this year to try and win the top honours for the best fancy dressed as the last of the 2005 Towers Shiraz was up for grabs. With plenty of prizes and giveaways we had characters from Caddy Shack, The Blue Brothers, Crocodile Dundee, Batman and Batwoman, (Nicole looked better than Dean in tights), a well buffed Chuck Norris, but there could only be one winner with Darth Vader (Brendos) and Princess Leah (Jo) taking out the top gong. Thanks Camo for helping on the night.

The annual Presidents Golf Day was postponed from Feb to May due to severe wet weather. A group of 20 fought for this prestige title and honour at Bayview, with many a golf ball ending up at the bottom of the various water hazards. Thanks to Brenden Ball for his fine efforts as the handicapper. Congrats to Joe Fabbro for taking out the title this year.

A group of Plateau Pilgrims pillaged their way to Nelson Bay for another end of season trip at the end of March. Amazingly they still take our booking; it must be our gentlemanly demeanour that is so alluring. This year it was the B2’s Des Sainsbery Shield that accompanied us, and he had a marvellous time as did everyone, yet again. See you again next year.

The Junior Picnic Presentation Day was once again a great success and its a combination of all the hard work Vicki puts in all season, along with help from Steve, Jacko and Rob, its good to see that the B3 juniors will now become permanent seniors players starting next season, look out for the brick at Brooky pub.

The double wicket comp was held once again at the home of cricket, it was a great day eventual winners Col Huxley and Nick McLaughlin were the deserved winners, thanks to Adam Pressley for organizing the day as you need a university degree to work out the draw. Unfortunately after a mix up with an address, the double wicket trophy which was only found again 4 years ago after a 25 year hiatus, was thrown out by a non cricket lover who thought 3 feet under Kimbriki tip was a better option than walking 200 metres up the road and leaving it at the club house.

Unfortunately a lighting storm cut short our international game this year versus the rest of the world, but once again Jacko excelled himself in getting the day organized.

The Chewy Cup this year was held this year on a soggy Harbord park strip after batting 1st cpcc set a fair total but to the Breakers credit they hung in there and with a big over to there skip Rob Lavery at the death they snatched victory. Maybe we should take this Brooky challenge match a bit more seriously like the Breakers who apparently have a selection committee and train twice a week for 12 weeks before the game. And stop letting the Breakers boys shout us all those beers at the pub on the Saturday night before the Sunday game.

The final event of the year was the presentation night which was well attended, with all the deserved winners receiving their silverware on the night. A great slide presentation was a highlight thanks to Rob and Marty, and congrats go to the victorious B2's on their premiership and to their star recruit Ewen Chung who took out the Shearers this year just ahead of A1's charger Pete Henriksen.

Next season looks like being another big year for the club culminating in the England Tour in July 2009,for anyone thinking of going, but aren't really sure, if you love cricket I cannot recommend a better thing to do or a better bunch of blokes to go with.

See you in the log room. Luke Ireland / Andy Cameron Social Secretaries

The Plateau Pilgrims at Nelsons Bay

17 Senior Team Reports A1 One bad session in the entire season proved a mortal blow to what I believe was the strongest A1 squad this Club has ever fielded. Unfortunately this session came during the semi-final resulting in the team’s first and only loss of the season and a premature exit from Premiership contention.

The regular season record of the A1s indicates just what a powerful beast this team was as crushing wins and record setting individual performances set up a comfortable Minor Premiership. A gradual decline in available personnel for both the A1s and A3s over the previous seasons forced a consideration of combining the key elements of both teams to make one strong squad with an eye to the future. Ultimately Dean Storey, Jason Ferris and Nathan Storey agreed to move up into A1s with fellow A3 players Matt Thompson and Dave Gilkes available to fill in where required. The addition of Internet signing Dave Pentecost to the squad rounded out things nicely.

So it was that the new-look A1s turned up at Griffith Park in round 1 with great expectations to find………a shredded Astroturf pitch courtesy of Council contractors. Both sides were too keen not to play, so we pretended the tears and rips weren’t there as Harbord got off to a flying start. The rusty Plateau bowlers took a while to find their mark, and the ball had to knock the cobwebs out of a few fielders fingers but eventually Harbord were dismissed for 189. The Towers had one or two anxious moments chasing but reached the total six down thanks to strong starts from Scott Robertson (26), Rob Van Dam (38) and Jas Ferris (45*). This was to be the closest the Towers would be tested until round 12, coincidently also at Griffith Park. Round 2 presented the Grand Final replay against Seaforth at Balgowlah Oval. The picket fence copped a hammering from the Tower batsmen as the impressive line-up clicked into gear. The entire top and middle order got a piece in the feeding frenzy which resulted in a massive total of 368. Henriksen (68) led the way with Minnett (63), Robertson (42) and Van Dam (45) close behind. The following week Seaforth set out after CPCC’s ‘Everest’ of a total at a leisurely pace, obviously intent on viewing the peak from a safe distance and not risk disaster attempting the summit. As it was, foul weather ruined the Plateau’s chances of a win when lightning and then bad light halted play when the 8th wicket fell. A draw from such domination only wetted the Towers’ appetite for points. The first home match of the season was against Belrose. It was also the first match for Marty Laird who promptly did what he has a habit of doing – took a wicket with his first ball! Belrose’s 166 hardly stood the day as Minnett (63) put on his usual devastating display against the Roses whilst Laird nearly upstaged him with a whirlwind fifty as nightwatchman! An exciting stage was set the following week when the Towers were left with 119 runs to win off only 10 overs after Haithwaite’s 5 wicket haul. The required run rate of 11 was maintained by Minnett, Ferris & Pentecost up until the total of 93 however the loss of three quick wickets put paid to what would have been a memorable outright.

With North Manly being handed ten points from a forfeit, it was important to make the most of opportunities for maximum points and opportunity knocked against newcomers Cromer. Whilst the Towers were without Henriksen & Ferris, a sound total of 9/222 was posted against Cromer on a lifeless pitch at St Mathews Farm with fifties posted by Van Dam (51) and Moss (55). Despite the dull surface, Cromer were rolled for 139 with Van Dam and Laird taking 3 wickets each. Following on, the home side collapsed for 94 leaving the Plateau 13 to get off a couple of overs for the ten points. A win against North Manly in Round 5 would see the Plateau assume the competition lead. Rain shortened the round to a one-dayer but that didn’t stop CPCC posting 8/211 off 35 overs. Mossy (56) and Cloggs (41) continued their great form whilst Dave Pentecost (30) was making every opportunity count. Henriksen (4/20) ripped through North Manly who only managed 136 in reply and the Plateau were in first position. North Steyne were our opposition at Vic Huxley for round 6, another team new to A1s and one with a Plateau connection. Ex CPCC A2 regular (& the only Plateau player to have scored a century in a final) Jason James & ex-CPCC junior Greg Allsopp were lining up for Steyne. They kept pressure on the home side’s batting for most of the day despite fill-in Matt Thompson’s 90 run season-best opening stand with Rob Minnett. At one point it looked like the Tower’s were to be restricted to around 200 until the skipper had his moment in the sun for the season scoring 62* in quick fashion (including 24 off Jas James’ last over). The partnership with Jas Haithwaite put on 99 and boosted the total to 6/266. Rain the following week prevented any play and the game ended in a draw. Lake Park fixtures are always fun and Pete Henriksen certainly enjoyed himself bowling against Manly Leagues Club taking 5 for 41. The Plateau batsmen wasted no time setting out after the small total of 140 and a declaration was made prior to tea on day two with CPCC 6/260 thanks to 55 from Mossy, 57 from Pete and a swashbuckling 65 from Dave Pentecost. Stubborn batting by Leagues held off the outright but only just, as the Towers pushed them all the way to 7 for 81.

The new year brought a string of one-dayers with the struggling Harbord offering some competition in the first one taking 7 Plateau wickets before their total of 140 was passed (Van Dam 34) however it was the second one-day match against the raining reigning premiers Seaforth that rocked the Club record books. A sunny day at Vic Huxley Oval was a fitting venue for the historic events that were about to transpire. There was drama from ball one when Rob Minnett was dismissed LBW. At 1-0 Dave Moss strode to the wicket and gave a taste of what lie ahead for the Seaforth bowlers by hitting two fours before the first over was out. With Henriksen at the other end, the only thing reigning were boundaries as the scores began to mount. Mossy broke through the hundred barrier and when Henriksen was out for 78 the pair had put on a massive 218 run partnership (a potential club record). Mossy, on 133 pushed on with overs running out and the 34 year old Club record of Riggall and Brown in his sights. On 166 he skied one deep to midwicket, a diving fieldsman took the catch but it was clear (especially on video replay) that he was over the boundary. Amazingly Mossy had broken the 33 year old record, but what was most astounding was that he achieved it in a 35 over one day match in the top grade! He finished with a new mark of 179 not out. I should also add that he was hit in the neck during his innings. To ice one of the biggest days in club history, Seaforth were dismissed for 59 with them losing 6-0 at the end, Henriksen taking 5 for 7. I can’t believe that I was on the Pacific Hwy between Coffs and Taree receiving SMS updates whilst this all unfolded. The Plateau batsmen kept rolling at Lake Park against Cromer totalling another massive innings of 244 off 35 overs. Pete continued his great form with a brilliant 103 not out – his tenth century for CPCC resulting in Platinum membership of the Centurion Club. Cromer could only manage 121 with the skipper gladly taking the ball from an exhausted Henriksen and grabbing 4 for 29. North Manly were shaping up as our biggest threat and this materialised when were were dismissed for a lowly 148 at Griffith Park. The Plateau steadily took wickets but a fight by the North Manly tail made for a tight finish and ultimately a narrow victory. This win sealed the Minor Premiership for the Towers. The next game against North Steyne was unfortunately washed out which brought us to the last round against Manly Leagues at Lionel Watts. Sending us into bat on a heavily top dressed ground soon backfired on the Leagues club. The first wicket was lost at 87 as Henriksen again put on a big score. Again almost everyone got a start and the score of 9 for 245 was probably more like 320 given the depth of dirt on the ground. Leagues club just went the motions in their run chase until unlikely bowling option Scott Robertson put them out of their misery (short term) by taking 3 for 28.

And so it was that one was drawn against four in the Semi-final at Nolans 1. I’m sure I’m on the record for saying this before but I don’t like this system and it is for this very reason. North Manly were not the fourth best team in the competition. With their full compliment of players (which they had by finals time), they were easily the second strongest as Seaforth were struggling and Leagues Club …… well just look at our results against Leagues during the season. I guess they say that to win a premiership you need to beat everyone but for all our magnificent efforts during the regular season being rewarded with a sudden death playoff against an experienced, strong side playing well seems a bit rough. This match should have been the Grand Final. The game itself was pure finals cricket as North Manly used good bowling and fielding pressure to crack our top order. The inevitable two questionable umpiring decisions added to the pressure and we were eventually rolled for a season low 137. A fightback occurred on day 2 as North Manly only just crept passed our total before being dismissed for 147 and then a valiant attempt at outright failed later in the afternoon but not before the fear of god had been put up our opposition. The end of the story was the Manly Leagues won the Grand Final the following week. Good luck to them for being the last team standing in their 50th season.

Despite the disappointment of going undefeated up until the finals and not obtaining a premiership, this was a remarkable season with many highlights. The new members of the team proved as expected, that they are quality A1 cricketers. Dean Storey’s left arm slowies proved quite a weapon with him just missing out on the team average by a couple of wickets and Nathan Storey was flawless behind the stumps taking everything that came his way. Jas Ferris usually wins all the batting awards but this season he was overshadowed by some outstanding performances. What Jas did win was the fielding award and it was in no way a token award. As a sportsman experienced at an elite level Jas’ presence on the field gives everyone a huge boost and it is a privilege playing with him – and exhausting batting with him! Dave Pentecost was a

18 Senior Team Reports terrific addition to the team, thumping the ball and getting breakthrough wickets when called upon. All the guys who filled in during the year (Dave Gilkes, Matt Thompson, Dan Peters, Kev Faulkner, Steve McKinnon, Paps, Adam Pressley, Jason Conroy, James Glass and Chris O’Hara) thankyou, we didn’t miss a beat. Thanks also to Vice Captain Pete Henriksen for taking over the helm in my absence, in particular the great job he did to rally the team back from defeat to a potentially winning position in the semi-final.

Captaining such a strong side presented a number of challenges. With so much talent it was tough to find a balance of providing opportunities, establishing a winning formula and giving everyone enough cricket to keep them interested. I can only hope that I somewhat achieved this. The loss of a number of days cricket due to wet weather and forfeits didn’t help. Commitments of a growing family mean that I will be stepping out of the action for a period. It has been an honour and pleasure to have captained the A1s over the last decade and I look forward to rejoining the action some time soon. 19 Senior Team Reports A2 For the first time in many seasons all 3 A grade competitions were 8 teams strong. Long Reef (fine group of gentlemen!?#) went down to A3’s & the reigning A2 premiers Belrose went up to A1’s along with runners up Nth Steyne. This left only Mona Vale & ourselves from last seasons 5 team A2 comp.

We started the year with high hopes & appeared on paper to have a roster that had a good chance of meeting our lofty expectations. We made scores of well over 200 in our first 3 games without managing a win. In game 3 against newly promoted Seaforth we made 255 batting first & didn’t go close to defending them. It was just not our year, Scott Smidt broke down early in the year in what is likely a career ending torn bicep tendon just bowling a delivery, our new fast bowling recruit Will Dobie also broke down in the same game, although he was the stand out bowler at the back end of the year & with more support should have a bumper 08/09. Hoges who won the association average in 07/08 also broke down for several matches at one stage & was generally shown no respect by the young upstart batsmen that came up to A2’s.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hoges for his service over the last couple of seasons & wish him well in retirement, if the TAB gets too expensive on a Saturday I’m sure we can find you a spot somewhere in CPCC mate. In the batting dept Ray Boswell, a fine top order bat broke his finger just before Xmas ending his season, I think he has forgiven me for trying to put it back in!! Dan was also missing for a substantial chunk of the year & he so often gets us off to a good start that he was hard to replace. His opening partner was supposed to be Sewelly but I don’t think that actually opened together until the new year. Sewelly never really got going in what he says was his last year, if you want to finish on that season mate it’s your prerogative, but you’re a long time retired & I think you showed enough with the gloves in the last 3 games to go around again as a opening bat/keeper, a diamond duck is no way for a club stalwart to finish!

Browny & myself ended up 1 & 2 in both batting & bowling & look forward to more support next year. The high point of the year without doubt was the game against Diggers at Vic Huxley, we bowled them out for a modest 130 or so, however we were dismissed for well under 100. In the second dig they retired, setting us near 200 for victory, we were not looking good until Dee strolled to the crease. He made 60 not out & with support from a couple of other guys we won outright.

To be fair, some of the teams that came up played some pretty good cricket, however we really didn’t have the cattle in the end to compete on a regular basis, don’t get me wrong it was still an enjoyable season for the most part but nothing beats winning beers. With a couple of retirements & long term injuries we do need an injection of talent & with the success of most of our sides & a recruitment drive I’m confident that we will have a very successful season 08/09.

The club is planning another England Tour in July 09 & there is a real buzz around the place so go the Towers & go the mighty Sea Eagles. A3

The 2007/08 season saw a lot of us playing together for the 1st time as a team in the A3 comp. We had players from the A1's, A2’s, A3’s, B3’s and a few guys who haven't played in a while. With all this considered we had a pretty good season, coming fourth in a very competitive comp where only six points separated 1st to 5th. A draw and a narrow loss saw us slip from 1st to 4th in the last 2 weeks of the comp, we took on 1st place Cromer in the semis and made them fight for there win which must of sapped it out of them as they lost the GF.

We had some good wins this season including 2 outright wins before Xmas and 2 scores of 300 plus. We welcomed new players Mark Ennis, Jason Conroy, Mike Heptonstall, and master blaster Ray "Tendulkar" Dadwal to the side along with former A3 players Michael Pearson, Michael Letts, Matt Thompson, David Gilkes, Ash McPhee and Clay Denoon, linking up with Dave Quarford, Andrew Cameron, Mick Mackin, Daz McDermott and club stalwart Ben Ireland along with a cameos from talented junior James Trickey and Matthew Golledge. All contributed and fitted in really well, but as usual with prior commitments etc we generally had only 11 players available every week. It didn’t help losing Clay in the second game resulting in him missing most of the season. Some highlights this year with the bat included Mark Ennis 102*, Jason Conroy 81* Ash 95* Luke 112* Gilkes 73* Mick 56 Ray 41 Lettsy 49 Thommos match winning 38 and ring-in Rob Minnetts flukey 73, along with Daz McDermott 30 not outs which proved valuable down the order. Our batting was pretty good this year we had 6 guys with 20 plus averages. We even managed 285 in a 1 dayer against eventual premiers Harbord Bowling Club.

Our bowling wasn’t bad either this year with the whole team getting a bowl at one time or another over the season, Mick 31 wickets including a 6 wicket hall and 9 wickets in one game, he probably could have got 10 if the captain didn’t bowl himself so much. But dark horse Freddy whose dart like spinners were sensational all season picked up a bowling average and was very tight and consistent each week. Ray proved very handy with the ball, with his surprising speed and bounce he caught many a batter unawares. We had five bowlers get around 15 wickets each including Mark Luke, Ray, Freddy and Mick, with guys like Brown, Thommo, Ash, Lettsy, Bag and Pearso all chipped in with handy wickets and good bowling at times. Fielding wise Mick and Gilkesy were solid taking 9 catches a piece including Gilkesy picking up 3 in an innings, other notable performers were Jason, Mark, Ray and of course Dazza our trusty keeper who was solid all year and was handy with advise and organizing games stats etc, he's a good VC and a valuable part of the senior leadership group which includes Camo, Brown and Freddy.

Another highlight of the season was Camo and Cols awesome effort at the MWCA Assoc. After St Peters gutless effort, in putting in a protest of 5th vs 4th a week before the semis, based on a legal technicality on player eligibility. After getting the decision in there favour on Thursday night Camo stepped in and appealed the decision and proceeded to pick apart the rules and put forward argument after argument and by the end of the meeting the committee were practically apologising for disqualifying us in the first place. Great work from Col and Cammo late on a Fri night maybe if we hadn’t celebrated so hard after the decision we might have felt and played better in the semi the next day. Our social Man Of The Match this season was pretty competitive, with Brown, Camo, Mick and Freddy putting in some big nights at the pub, the Roy, and The Gibbon enclosure, but Ray was a clear winner enjoying a drink with his team or anyone for that matter in cricket gear, he fell under the bad influences of Pete and Brown and spent more time at The Gibbon enclosure than he did on the field, well done Ray a good team man on and off the field. Our Players Player this year just pipping Ray, Gilkesy and Heppo for his unselfishness was Freddy, for his all round good work on and off the field, A1s loss was definitely our gain.

I'd like to thank the team on a whole for an enjoyable and competitive season I know I can count on there support in tough situations, I just get a tad paranoid when I’m not invited to the team meetings organized by Daz and Brown. But any way I hope everyone backs up next season because we got something good going on in this team. Cheers.

21 Senior Team Reports B1 Another enjoyable season was had by all in the B1’s. We recorded an impressive 8 wins (2 outright), 3 draws and 3 losses putting us in second place at the end of the season.

Highlights of the year included  Andrew Graham smashing an impressive 399 runs  Adam Peacock’s medium pacers snaring 29 wickets  Stuart Forbes Taking 7 wickets in an innings  Brian Siao taking a catch off Adam Peacock’s bowling  Adam Peacock scoring his first ton 119 not out  Doug Wiles consistently turning up to games on time

Unfortunately the boys couldn’t go on with it in the semis and we were knocked out by Long Reef in a close contest. I would like to commend my fellow team members for the spirit in which we play the game of cricket and look forward to giving the competition a real shake next year.

22 Senior Team Reports B2 For my third year as captain we finally had that elusive dream run. We started with an outright win in round 1 and remained undefeated until eventually getting beaten in round 12 by just 2 runs. It was to be our only loss for the season. We had some stella batting performances and pulled some out of the hat (one in round 8 with only 9 players on the field to start & then suffered two injuries during the game). It did seem however, that we weren't getting enough cricket in with 3 forfeited games and 2 wash outs. Finishing the rounds as minor premiers put us in prime position. The semis continued our dream run but the final was where the real challenge lay. The following is our final game - as seen from my 'captains perspective';

B2 Grand Final 2007-2008 vs Belrose Nolans 5 (This is the final where we were rolled twice, and all but lost 3 times - only to win in the end amid some controversy & heartbreak for the opposition!) We played a very good team in the final - Belrose who were virtually undefeated. We hadn't played against them at all during the rounds, thanks to their forfeit and a washout. I lost the toss and we were sent in to bat (I was going to bowl first had I won). Our solid start ended when I was run out on 11 after my opening partner was ball watching and not running. We then lost wickets regularly to be about 8-75 or so, but rallied to be all out 120. Top score Ewen Chung 35. They went in to bat, and batted aggressively in the fading light to be 2-75 at stumps. We all thought they were in the box seat to win early on day two chasing just 46 with wickets in hand.

Sunday started poorly when the bowler I was going to open with Ewen, had a sore shoulder and didn't want the ball. My other planned opening bowler, Pete Clark forgot his shoes. My 1st change bowler (Andrew Coates) also carried a bad shoulder from the day before... Then while warming up with fielding practice, Matt Moore tore a muscle in his leg & couldn't even walk. There goes another important strike bowler ! To make matters even worse Kevin Faulkner broke a finger on the first ball - diving in the field.... he went off too. Thankfully we had a 12th and 13th man available (Rob Steel was our 12th & Rob Minnett was our irrepressible 13th man).

Pete borrowed some shoes & with the help of an official umpire we set about knocking them over! At the end of their first innings they were all out 2 runs short, thanks to some excellent bowling and an opportunistic run-out off a misfield. So now - all we had to do was go in and bat out the remaining overs of the day, which sounded easy. Alas with some really dodgy umpiring decisions, some inspired bowling and catching from Belrose we ended up being 6-26 off 12 overs. I then padded up as a runner and sent Matt in - he could hardly move, but at least he could block. We found out later later that Matt was sure he wouldn't get out because he was too injured to play a shot or swing the bat in anger - he only ever gets out playing a shot, not blocking! Matt (our 'rock' as Belrose called him) lasted 2 agonising hours & ultimately I was also forced to bat Kevin with his broken finger. To Matt's credit we survived to 5pm, and had gradually built a lead of 60 runs.

I did the math and after 10 minutes for the change of innings - we would have to bowl for 20 mins. I estimated that we have to bowl at least 5 overs & they would need to score at 12 runs per over to tie, more to win! I found out later that their opener has scored a ton in only 6 overs once before. Anyway he hit a 6 off the first ball (over cover) and kept hitting from there. Amazingly they were slightly ahead of the rate required heading into the 4th over. I had almost everyone back and it was really hard to direct the field quickly when the umpire knew the clock was ticking. Belrose even had players riding the boundary to throw the ball back quickly after a four or a six to stop us wasting any time in the field. Just when it was looking really bad, one of the Belrose batsmen skied the ball and Blake Conde moved in with the keepers gloves for the catch - alas the bowler only had eyes for the ball too & knocked Blake off the ball, spilling it to the ground. They got 2 more runs, amid cheers from Belrose. At the start of the 5th and last over, the 20 mins had all but gone & they needed just 8 runs. The umpire agreed this would be the last over and I managed to get some time from him to set the field precisely. In the first two balls they managed only 2 singles. On the third ball they tried to steel a run from the keeper but Blake narrowly ran them out. Thankfully a 2nd official umpire had arrived and was officiating at square leg - else it might not have gone our way as it was close. Then amazingly - the umpires agreed there was no time remaining to bring out a new batsmen (it was well past 5:30 and we'd bowled more than 70 overs) - we were declared the winner with 4 runs to spare. The last 3 balls of the over were not bowled. I doubt anyone could have scripted such an ending to a final.

Winning the final was a team effort - everyone played their part well, so I'd like to commend everyone in our small squad of 15 for their efforts. Ewen Chung was our player of the series. Ewen also won the Batting Average & Aggregate, plus the bowlers Aggregate (narrowly missing the bowling average from Michael Rohanek). Blake won the fielding award as our keeper & also picked up the Warwick Armstrong Trophy for most catches in the club. Despite some brilliant fielders in our team - it's impossible not to give Blake the gong who's a great support for our bowlers.

Many in our team had great seasons - Graeme Faulkner was particularly excellent opening the batting and tireless in the field. Matt, as always, was very competitive all-round, Peter Clark & Andrew Coates bowled exceptionally well regularly, Kevin Faulkner's batting and fielding was also a highlight - so too was Paul Rovere's leg spin, solid batting, zippy running between wickets and exceptional fielding. James Humberstone gives me great flexibility by performing well in any position & after a slow start - did finally showed us his money ball. Unfortunately we say goodbye to Ganesh Raj aka 'Raj' who leaves us to head back to India after 3 seasons (You have been a lot of fun Raj but I won't miss your running between wickets & keeping your head down).

We have a very promising young player in Adam Wilkinson & we had some great support & strong individual performances from Michael Ossitt & Rob Steel during the season. Let's hope Michael Rohanek returns to us from wedded bliss and plays out another full season as our main strike / opening bowler as he only played 5 games for us after injury and too many gigs. Thanks also to a couple of one game ring ins - Dave Pentecost & Garry Rudder. To my wife Lani & to all the other partners, family and supporters thanks for helping make our team so much fun to play with and organise each week.

Game 1 2008/2009 will be my last as captain. I step down only because of too many work and home commitments. At the end of Game 1 we will vote for a new captain and possibly a new vice captain - although James does a great job as VC and will get my vote to remain. Special thanks to Col Huxley, Rob Minnett and Brendan Ball for their support during my time as captain. Finishing with a premiership is pretty sweet.

And still the league table blows in the wind, moaning "you don't know if you could play finals, do you?", and on, and on. (Written J. Humberstone)

This was a new side made up of:  experienced players i.e. Toby Horstead, Greg Bruckard, John Jackson  B4 players of 05-06 i.e. Andrew Cameron, John Cameron, Ben Ireland, Rob Lee, Matt Golledge.  father/ son combinations i.e. Tom and Steve Carden, Peter and Nick Bonner, Scott and Nick McLachlan, Ted and Adam Wilkinson  junior players i.e. Sam Steindl, Matt Richards.

Luke Ireland, Clay Denoon and Brenden Ball also played. For the first time in many seasons we had a large squad with the task of getting a side together each week never an issue. Unfortunately we were in a seven team comp in an eight team format which meant 4 days less cricket than in a 6 team comp. The side finished 5th .The comp was dominated by an impressive Cromer side who would have been competitive at A3 level. We were reasonably competitive in two day games but failed to register a win in the one-dayers.

Highlights of the season included:-  Matt Richards and Tom Carden’s bowling in game 1.  A big outright win over Belrose in round two. A century to Luke Ireland and 9 wickets to Greg Bruckard. Ben Ireland and Matt Golledge aggressive partnership to put us in control of the match.  Determined batting by J Jackson and G Bruckard to give us a credible total against Cromer in game 4. J Cameron‘s on drive for four in the same game.  A tense post tea session to hold out for the draw against the Breakers.  T Horstead, C Denoon, L Ireland and centurion B Ball ripping apart a Long Reef attack to chase down 238.  Sam Steindl’s first 50 for the senior club in a one dayer v Manly Leagues.  Toby Horstead’s 85 against the might of the Cromer attack. The McLachlans 30 odd last wicket partnership in the same innings.  Rob Lee’s defiant and sole hand for a PB of 45 to give us a credible total in round two against the breakers. A competitive all round bowling performance from T Carden, N McLachlan, M Golledge and T Horstead in a very close result.  Andrew Cameron’s leadership in a final round win over Long Reef. Nick McLachlan’s and matt Richards bowling and Toby Horstead, Peter Bonner and Sam Steindl’s batting in this game.

26 Junior Secretary’s Report

Despite the number of lowlights due to rain affected weeks season 2007-2008 still provided plenty of highlights for Plateau cricketers including a premiership! Continued growth in registrations saw the number of Junior teams increase again this year to 17. We even saw the need to form a third team in the Kanga and Under 11 age groups – a first for our club.

Early in the season we proudly congratulated an unprecedented 18 CPCC Juniors that were selected for MWJCA representative duties. Rep caps went to: Under 10 Foster Shield - Jake Carden Under 11 IDCA – Sam Filmer-Ramsay, Matthew Makinson, Kieren Nixon and Matt Wickham Under 11 Creak Shield – Zach Trewartha and Ben Wickham Under 12 Cawsey Shield – James Boyer, Angus Demol and Liam Filmer-Ramsay Under 13 IDCA – Travers Keirle and James Trickey Under 13 Gee Shield – Ben Rowbotham Under 15 IDCA – Logan Stevenson Under 15 Weblin Shield – Jake Fraser Under 16 Watson Shield – David Le, Jordan Meredith and Nick McLachlan

This is a wonderful representation from our Club. On top of the obvious benefits gained in coaching and playing experience, the rep season resulted in 3 of our players - James Boyer, Angus Demol and Liam Filmer-Ramsay - being invited to trial for the CricketNSW emerging blues program, with Angus and Liam going on to be selected in the program. Nick McLachlan was also selected to play Green shield and along with Jordan Meredith was called up to lend his services to Manly Grade in the latter stages of the season. Congratulations to all of these boys on their outstanding achievements. Rep trials for the 2008-2009 season will be held at Lionel Watts Oval during September 2008. CPCC would encourage as many players as possible to attend these sessions as selectors are keen to see the full range of players that MWJCA clubs can produce. MWJCA winter training sessions have again been running at the SCG nets during the off-season. Several CPCC boys have been attending these beneficial sessions.

At the recent MWJCA presentation night CPCC was again prominent. Congratulations to the Under 10/1 “Surge” team who were joint Premiers in this age group. A fantastic effort from these boys (under the guidance of coach Roy Vumbaca) who went through the season undefeated until the last game. Other awards presented on the night:

Player: Awards: Grade: Jake Carden Batting Average 65.8 Batting Aggregate 329 and Champion Player Under 11/1 James Boyer Sportsmanship Award Under 12 Creak Shield Sam Filmer-Ramsay Sportsmanship Award Under 11 IDCA Angus Demol Best Batting Average 208 Under 12/1 Jordan Meredith Highest score 102* Best Bowling Figure 6/3 Under 15’s Nick McLachlan Eric Palmer Bat award (most outstanding Junior Cricketer) Under 16/17’s

We were also proud to see Club stalwart David Quarford honoured on the night as an inaugural Life Member of MWJCA for services to Junior cricket in our area. A fair spread of our Junior players have benefited from Dave’s coaching, dedication and passion for cricket over many seasons and will know that this recognition is well deserved.

Our annual Father/son/daughter match was held on Australia Day weekend 2008 at Plateau Park and was once again a most enjoyable and sociable outing for players and their families. After a morning filled with plenty of friendly banter, a flurry of runs and some serious wicket taking the “Yellow” team (Ian and Dom Wheeler, Austen and Alan Woods, Nick and Peter Bonner, Xander and Steve Thompson, Matt and Peter Clements, Glenn and Steve Shaw, Frank and Mitchell Curran) were the eventual winners over the “Blue” team (Mikaela and Jason Turik, Ray and Logan Stevenson, Nicole Shaw, John Jackson, Jake, Emily and Steve Carden, Adam and Ted Wilkinson. Nathan and Jeff Lange). The exploits of the match were duly relived over BBQ lunch and cold drinks!

Other season 07-08 notes:  Glenn Shaw’s Under 14/1 “Static” team took up the invitation to enter into the Michael Clarke Twenty/20 knock-out tournament run by CricketNSW  Level 1’s coaching course was held at Plateau Park with several of our club coaches taking the opportunity to develop their coaching prowess  Club volunteers were acknowledged with ticket offers from CricketNSW and our CPCC “thank-you” soiree at the Brookie Hotel.

Another fabulous picnic day at Clontarf marked the end of season 07-08 with a beautiful sunny day making a mockery of the frustrations faced during the season in regards to wet weather. Along with the annual trophy and medal presentations a milestone in club history was marked as we farewelled the first “graduate” group of Juniors since the Junior sector of the Club was reinstated in 1995 by Dave Quarford. Tom Carden joined that initial Kanga side, with Sam Steindl, Matt Richards and Ryan Jacobs joining soon after. The boys have played together through various team changes right through until 16/17’s. As well as their Saturday morning cricket the boys have been assimilating into the afternoon competition over the past 2 seasons and are now fully fledged Seniors.

We are currently busy booking accommodation and filling teams for the first ever CPCC Junior’s Tour. This will happen in the October school holidays 08 when we venture to Canberra to take part in the Twenty/20 Kookaburra Cup as run by CricketACT. I’m not sure who is looking forward to this trip the most, the players or the parents?! Some other initiatives and plans in the works for season 08-09 include:  A new directive from MWJCA that all “traditional” rules teams must provide two ticketed umpires. Courses and support will be provided to CPCC parents and players over 14 that step up for this role.  The newly branded In2Cricket program will be offered at CPCC this season for players Under 6. We are grateful to Clare Filmer- Ramsay for taking on the coordinator role for this initiative.

So it’s “all systems go” as we gear up for the next season – there’s never a dull moment at the Plateau! Thanks to all for a wonderful season 07- 08 and looking forward to the coming Summer when we will do it all again.

27 Junior Team Reports UNDER 16 /17

The End of an Era! …the players’ perspective.

It was with a paradoxical mix of excitement, regret and vacillation when I made the decision at the beginning of last season that I wouldn't be playing junior cricket for the Plateau, instead concentrating on captaining the fledgling B3's, taking our first step into senior cricket. It was almost with a sense of relief that on the first Saturday morning of the season I woke to the zzzzz of my mobile at 8:45am informing me that my presence would indeed be required for 'just a couple' of games, and to get to good old Plateau Park ASAP. The season was a spectacular one, beating world-beaters Wakehurst and Beacon Hill, then losing to lowly SCEGGS and Peninsula. Rain, injuries and other commitments made the season an interrupted one, yet thanks to the resilience and tenacity of the boys it was a successful one, easily gaining a place in the top 4. If juniors had finals, who knows what could have happened? (We would've won!)

The obligatory and well earned thanks to all our wonderful scorers, umpires, crowds, parents, players, sponsors (ha-ha), opponents (hahaha!!) and anybody else who in my lacklustre memory I have forgotten. And for all the years, from when we were too young to appreciate it, to now, when we're too old to acknowledge it, many, many, many thanks. It wouldn't have been possible without you! Even bigger ‘thank yous’ to three specific individuals.  John Jackson - Our 'part time' coach for many many years. The stalwart of Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club. He has been essential in our development, taking over from where the equally brilliant Steve Carden and Dave Quarford left us primed for his sublime knowledge of the game. But seriously Jacko, thanks a bunch.  Vicki Carden - Anybody who's played junior cricket for Collaroy Plateau will empathise with how much thanks we all owe this wonderful lady. I have no idea how she does it, but I guess we can never understand the omnipotent. Thank you Vicki for the countless scheduling and ground dilemmas you've fixed, Friday night registrations you've completed, picnics you've organised, trophies you've had engraved, equipment you've organised, everything you've done, thank you.  Pete Henriksen - Not only a cool guy, but a great coach as well! While some may not consider him the model coach, I beg to differ. He may not have been there every single minute of every single game or training session, but these naysayers tend to look past the umpiring, organising, coaching and mentoring that has been ubiquitous throughout the season. Whether it's advising us on moralistic issues, teaching Tom the off-cutter or organising Zone Three, it helps. Thanks for everything Pete.

The sacrificing of the Saturday morning sleep in was well worth the excitement, passion, camaraderie, experience and overall enjoyment gained from the partaking in junior cricket. From Tom 'Have a go!' Carden, Matt 'The Brick' Richards, Ryan 'The Express' Jacobs, Nick 'McSharapova' McLachlan and myself, we say good luck to next years leaders, Angus 'Scoons' McKenzie, David 'BOOMHEADSHOT' Le, Hamish 'Ham' Clarke, Jeff, Bryce, Dom, Chris, Satish all of you.

Win the premiership next years boys, and we'll see you in a couple of years in A1's! Cheers, Sam Steindl

It wasn’t a keen start to my season, expecting to play only seniors but called into the 16/17s to make up numbers for one final year. In the end I am glad I ended up playing, as it turned into an interesting, enjoyable and beneficial season. The first half of the season was marred by rain, with three games washed out when we were in strong positions, 5 wash outs in total. As for the games that were completed, they were very contrasting. Firstly in round 2 we were hammered outright in a lacklustre performance against our rivals Beacon Hill. The turnaround was dramatic however when we smashed eventual premiers Wakehurst Red by 40 runs in round 4. This game produced the highlight of the season when Sam scored an amazing century off 40 odd balls. The next highlight was round 9, where in the return leg against Beacon Hill we pulled of a dramatic victory. A fantastic effort in the field saw us chasing a smallish total. Batting provided me with one of the most memorable moments of my time in juniors, when I hit a 6 in the last over of the game with the team 8 down to complete the victory. Beating our fierce rivals in our last ever game against them in that fashion was a very special moment. A great spell of quick bowling from Bryce helped us to an easy victory in the next game against Wakehurst Green. Following this we were beaten by Wakehurst Red which began a downturn in our season where we were beaten by lowly Peninsula and SCEGS. We capped off the season well however, in our final game, with a comfortable win over St Augustines Green.

In summary our ladder position of 5th doesn’t do the team justice, as we played a lot better than that throughout the season, and lost a lot of points to rain. Aside from the final standing we all really enjoyed the season and played some great cricket. Thanks to Pete who brought great coaching and enjoyment to the team. Its sad knowing there is no more junior cricket to come. It will always hold many memories for me and all the boys who are departing juniors. CP Juniors has seen us improve immensely as cricketers, achieve many milestones and of course win the comp in 05/06. On behalf of all the departing juniors thank you to all the people who have helped out during our time, especially to our coaches Dave Quarford, Dad, Jacko, GB and Pete. Tom Carden

One era closes, another has already opened …the coach’s perspective Great to hear the perspective of two of the emerging talents, and top young men, of CPCC’s flourishing junior organization. From a coaching point-of-view this season has been one quite different to past seasons I’ve been involved with. Last year it was questionable but this year it was very clear… these young men may be junior cricketers by age definition, but let me be clear, in no other way are they junior in the way they go about the game (or their writing as evidenced above.. vacillation anyone?). They play hard without ever complaining (that ain’t always quite the case at training though!), they don’t languish or sulk in defeat or over-gloat when celebrating victory, victories that started to come more frequently this season for a rather new side. We even had a sniff of the premiership at one stage. At least half have had a taste of senior cricket now, even captaincy in one instance; some have represented the Manly-Warringah area in the various Junior Shields, mixing with the cream of Sydney’s junior cricket talent, with one making small but significant steps into the Grade cricket arena. The Plateau’s most senior junior side in 2007-08 comprised last season’s existing U16/17 players coupled with a core, some relative newcomers, some stalwarts, from my U15s side of 06-07.

Who are these young men who have plied their way through the ranks of junior cricket and now represent the new breed of CPCC?  Leading batsman/keeper & ladies’ man Sam Steindl, who struggles to get to the games before even I do – the ones I get to anyway – has been a significant figure in this side and competition, inspiring his peers with confident batting, infectious attitude, and seriously scary bowling. One weary-eyed Lake Park arrival resulted in a powerhouse 42-ball ton that I will never forget. Hope I’m not too old for A1s when you arrive mate! You’ll love the 1:00pm starts as much as the spirited banter and old man bowlers.  Fiery fro-ed Matt Richards, who takes wickets with both left-arm pace and left-field off-breaks, takes the p1ss with a flair that only the astute tutelage of the likes of John Jackson could summons from a young and obviously impressionable teenager, but doesn’t take to a lowly batting spot with quite the same grace. Sure to make waves in all sorts of ways climbing the grades of the MWCA.  In future modern Western civilizations, “Carden” will indeed BE the new word for “Cricket”. With bat, ball, brains, and by being there, on time, all the time, Tom Carden will no doubt become a cricketer and contributor of note not just here at Plateau, but in the wider cricket community. Not since Dennis Lillee’s primal determination of the 70s has the spirit of cricket shone so brightly through a fast bowlers’ headband. Actually, has any fast bowler WORN a headband since DK?

28 Junior Team Reports

 Ryan Jacobs chimed in regularly with tight bowling, resolute defense and countless courageous fielding efforts, but, in a side of guys that could talk to each other mid duck-dive while paddling out at Longy, it can be tricky to know if Ryan is actually at training or the game sometimes, so seldom does he chime in with voice. Thank god he’s about 7 foot tall. This past junior clubman’s value to the club is priceless and his unwavering dedication will hold him in good stead for the challenges of senior cricket.  Angus MacKenzie has been there since the beginning and continues to shape his craft with wily left-armers and gritty, developing stroke-play, employing a bat that Andrew Symonds would call heavy, while always generating enthusiasm throughout the side with his all round positive approach to the game If only he could find a captain that would give him a bowl (Vote 1 Angus).  The other half of the AB Wedge may not quite exude the same excitement for the game or seek cricket’s great mysteries (Bryce... Bryce? BRYCE!) but fellow stalwart Bryce Gracie’s laid-back approach and glam-ghetto-fashioned penchant for flash do’s, 50 Cent, and Bling, masks a mean pace bowler who, like many young quicks, can have a bit of difficulty identifying the difference between a set of stumps and a batsman’s head. Can hit a ball too. Hope amidst the hits of rugby union you hit many more for CPCC Bryce.  By the time he’s legal for a schooner at the pub (I think Scott will let him have one by then, if the McLachlan-family cricket competitive- streak cheek subsides), Nick McLachlan may well have outgrown A1 cricket before even trying it on for size. Despite a wicket tally in juniors that wouldn’t threaten the mathematical prowess of a baby snail, Nick carved swathes through senior line-ups early in the season, compiled solid runs whenever sent in, often steering the junior top order in the morning then steeling the tail later that day in seniors, and was snapped up by the dark forces of Grade cricket before we could ball and chain him. Keep listening, keep your head up, and learn from disappointment Nick and the sky is the limit.  Dom Wheeler is the only wicket keeper I have ever known to claim an U16-17s hat trick and hit an A2 six in the same season. And I hope another one never comes, I never should have coached these guys to all think they can bowl, cos what the hell happens? They all CAN bowl! Bowling-order dramas guaranteed for one coach. Linking with my side from David Quarford’s B-side of yesteryear, Dom came with whispers of batting promise from his esteemed previous coach and has for a few seasons now shown how capable he is of delivering. Senior cricket goes for over 5 hours Dom so do yourself the favour you deserve and give yourself more time at the crease to achieve the big scores that beckon.  No one takes the game more seriously than Jeff Porter-Dening and he will take to the longer format senior cricket provides like melted cheese takes to the underside of a pizza box lid. Talented and technically proficient in all areas of cricket, Jeff will be making a bloody lot of dents on future scorebooks. You know how your mates can be right pains-in-the-butt most of the time but you keep seeing them and doing stuff together.. well accepting failures in cricket is kind of the same thing.  When Chris Wilding takes a wicket he still seems surprised, but the unassuming Englishman of the side with the un-ignorable hair has an uncanny knack of removing stubborn wickets with his uncomplicated approach to bowling. Of course the occasional leg-side wide will be bowled when your hair covers your eyes through most of your bowling stride but Chris, with his quiet yet inquisitive passion for the game his home country can’t play, is a hair-tie or (god-forbid) boyish trim away from becoming a dominant seam bowler.  When not writhing on the ground in a painfully tangled mess of arms, legs, spectacles and dust, enveloped by the unrelenting laughter of team mates after another sudden tumble on Vic Huxley Oval’s none-too-forgiving surface, David Le torments the opposition with dynamite speed and throwing in the field and a newfound maturity to batting that earned him a taste of reps this season. Recognised as junior clubman for 07-08 David’s natural skill and reflexes, willingness to test and push his abilities, thirst for knowledge and ability to listen to and apply what he learns will guarantee a rewarding and enjoyable future in a very good standard of cricket for years to come for one D. Le.  The new blood rounding out the side fitted in like when a fat dude sits next to you on the bus. Hamish Clarke’s legspin is, when it hits the pitch (just cos McGill gets wickets from full-tosses doesn’t mean it works for everyone), full of zest and worthy of pursuing one the game’s finer arts.  Speaking of zest, just give left-armer Satish Kala a crack with the new rock and his slippery seamers talk nearly as much as HE does about his wickets and slashes to the boundary.

Both competitive and spirited cricketers who with Angus, Bryce, Jeff, Dom & Chris have the opportunity to feature prominently on the field in their last junior season in 08-09. Sam and Tom did all the thanking of all the driving forces of this side brilliantly so I’d just like to echo those sentiments. Thanks Scott, Laurie, Dave, Greg and every parent who turns up, for all your dedication to your son’s and their mates sporting lives.

And to Vicki, Jacko, Freddie and every coach at CPCC and in the junior association, thank you for all your vast efforts for the club and sport, and positive influence on my life coaching sport to young people has provided me. Peter Henriksen

UNDER 15

The U/15 competition this season was a 'merged' competition with the former Div. 1 and Div. 2 comps combining. Once again our cricket improved. We were able to dominate the previous Div 2 sides but were unable to consistently compete with the top sides. We finished middle table in a competition that had lots of one day games which did not particularly suit our style of cricket.

Our team was made up of: New boys - Logan Stevenson and Karan Gurnarni. Logan's mates from Cromer High - Dylan Mazza, Nick Bonner, Daniel McIntyre and Austen Woods. The “St Paul’s” group - Jake Fraser, Jordan Meredith and Adam Wilkinson Plus - Matt Bullivant, Adam Powers, Xander Thompson and Sam Cannon.

Award Winners Bowling Nick Bonner Batting Jordan Meredith Most Improved Daniel McIntyre

Jake and Jordan played senior cricket with the Manly club. Jordan played some 5th grade post xmas. Good luck in your grade career Jordan. Adam Wilkinson appeared regularly in the CPCC B2 premiership side. The Bonners (Peter and Nick) and the Stevensons (Logan and Ray) appeared in the B3 development side. Several father/son combinations i.e. the Woods, Bonners, Stevensons and Wilkinsons appeared in the annual father/son game at Vic Huxley Oval on Australia Day. The Gurnarnis (Manoj and Karan) and the Powers (Glen and Adam) played in the CPCC v rest of world game at Acron oval.

Thanks to the loyal band of followers who supported the team on Saturday mornings through the season. In particular Peter Bonner and Ray Stevenson with managing and coaching duties. Hope to see you back next year in the tougher U16/17 's age group. John Jackson

30 Junior Team Reports Under 14/1 ‘Static’

2007/ 2008 saw another successful season for our “Static” team, who chose to step up and compete in the division 1competition for the first time, finishing a highly creditable 3rd place. Not bad for a team who was competing in division 3 two years ago. An uplifting win in the first round saw us leading the comp on percentages early, until some well established division 1 teams gave us a bit of a shake up. We rebounded well in the latter part of the competition as everybody came to the realization that we are a competitive team in the top division. Consistent strong batting performances this year came from Mitchell Curran, Cody Bruce, and Steven Shaw. Late in the season Paul Fabbro and Damon Twight both got their eyes in and scored freely. Other handy contributions came from Mikaela Turik, Jack Pearce and Ben Rowbotham before he departed to play for his school team on the weekends.

Bowling this year was our strength. We consistently bowled a tighter line and length than our opposition in most games, and this was also backed up by an improved effort in the field this year, with special mention to our best fielder in Matthew Clements. Mitchell Curran and Steven Shaw were our opening bowlers early in the season and were highly economical with the runs scored against their bowling. This set the stage for our change bowlers to attack, with Cody Bruce, Martin Vestergaard, David Morris, Nathan Lange and Matthew Clements all regularly picking up lots of wickets. Josh Hammill was given the wicket keeping gloves again this year and continued to improve in leaps and bounds every week taking some outstanding catches behind the stumps on many occasions. Josh is to be congratulated on finishing the season leading all of the competitions keepers for Most Catches taken. Well done Josh.

Many thanks to Greg Bruce for being a great team manager and providing solid support throughout the season. Thanks also to Peter Clements and David Turik for your invaluable assistance at our training sessions and many thanks to Nicole Shaw for scoring at all of our matches. “Static” have huge parental support at all of our games and I would like to express my appreciation for all of their encouragement. Looking forward with great anticipation to next season! Coach. Glenn Shaw

UNDER 14/2 ‘Flash’

It was a pleasure and a privilege to be associated with this fine team of talented and enthusiastic cricketers. Their hunger to learn coupled with their training ethic made my job as coach enjoyable, rewarding and educational. Many thanks go to a wonderful crew of supportive parents. Without their unselfish participation junior sport would not be possible. Congratulations to the boys on a well-played season, and thank-you to everyone. I look forward to renewing our partnership next season. Matt Terry: High Score 57* against St Augustine’s and 38 against Wakehurst, 2/7 and a catch against Cromer

32 Junior Team Reports UNDER 13/1 ‘Voltage’

This year was the merging of the two Division 2 teams from the previous year and the promotion to Division 1 and in the end became a very challenging and productive year for our team as the competition was fierce and intensity high as we were now in the top league playing against the best Manly Warringah could offer. To our teams credit we were never far off the mark and pushed our opposition in every aspect of the game and learnt valuable lessons along the way. Each player in this team had something to add and their contribution is as follows:

Ryan Armstrong toughed it out as opening batsman and highlighted against Peninsular who boasted a formidable pace attack and retired twice against this team which many players in the competition would not be able to do. Ryan took home the team batting award this season Cameron Baber generally batted high up in the order and had a strong innings against St. Augustines with a 28 off the bat. Cameron also delivered some handy spin bowling when needed which often baffled the opposition. Thomas Cains was the quite achiever who was a very handy batsman and could play his role in a partnership as well as bowl out top order batsmen at crucial times. Best bowling figures were against Harbord with 2/8. Billy Evers was the player in the team that would bat or bowl in any order and approached each game with vigour and enthusiasm and highlighted against Harbord in the first round where he second top scored with a solid innings and supported the middle order to build an innings. Michael French was the player in the team that just kept at it and at times probably even surprised himself with his ability with the bat and the ball. Just when an opposing batsman thought he was settled, Michael would deliver a ball that most A grade players would be proud of and take the wicket. Callum Gracie had a good all round effort over the year with both the bat and the ball and could play in all positions. Callum also had a good year in the field and would run down or intercept many a ball that was heading for the boundary. Todd Jacobs was a pleasure to coach and a willing competitor who would bat anywhere in the order and highlighted with the ball against a star studded Peninsular team who boasted multiple rep players and bowled out their top order in quick succession. Travis Keirle was chosen in the Manly Warringah IDCA team this year and figured well in our team with an elegant batting technique, superb leg spin bowling that troubled many a good batsmen and pinpoint judgement in the field. Dylan Kirkman was another all rounder in the team that could bat in any position and was always keen to face the opening bowlers, could bowl fast or change to spin and was quick, nimble and efficient in the outfield. Jake Ludlow had unbelievable reflexes in the field and will make a great slips fieldsman. Jake could also backup a top order batsman for many overs to help build the innings and then bowl good line and length at medium pace. Ryan Bishop-Perrett won our most improved award this year for his improvement with the bat. Ryan generally opened the bowling for the team with very accurate line and length but it was this year his batting came to the forefront and could bat out his overs with his steady run making and great support play with any order in the batting line up. Lachlan Simpson won the “Jack Norris” Club perpetual award for being the Under 13’s player’s player for his patience and positive attitude amongst his peers. Lachlan worked hard with the bat and never stopped trying with the ball and would take the lead when the Captain was off the field. Emerson Spina won our bowling award this year and was a lethal opening pace bowler with tremendous pace and accuracy and I’m sure that no batsman wanted to face him. Emerson could equally back up with the bat anywhere in the order and was very agile in the field. James Trickey won the “Ashes Memorial” Club perpetual batting award this year and was also a Manly IDCA representative. James captained the team and contributed with aggressive batting that put the opposition into defence mode from the first ball. James was also a handy bowler and had a very accurate arm from the outfield. Robbie Wood only played limited games for the team before breaking his leg and not returning for the season. It was Robbie’s first season and hopefully he returns to cricket next season and we wish him luck. Many thanks must go out to the parents for the support and the encouragement they gave to their sons and to me throughout the year. Our two training coaches Matt Golledge and Luke Ireland need to be commended for taking the time out to become accredited Level 1 coaches and then taking the time and patience to pass this knowledge onto our young men. Graham Trickey Manager

33 Junior Team Reports UNDER 12/1 ‘Storm’

We welcomed Alexander Brinkman, Giles Devaney and Jake Jenkins into the “Storm” at the start of the season whilst losing Sam Gainsford and Levi Laczko to St Augustines and Harbord respectively. The season ahead was going to be tough considering the talent in the opposition teams, so it was up to the boys to see if they were up to Division 1 competition.

Although we didn’t start the season well with Wakehurst giving us a lesson in the first round, we steadily improved as the season progressed. Some of the season highlights that stood out included:

 Storm scoring 193 runs against St Augustine Green in Round 2 with only the loss of 3 wickets in 35 overs with both James and Riley recording their highest scores (80 and 26 no respectively). The most pleasing part was the running between the wickets with only a handful of boundaries scored in this mammoth total

 In the pouring rain against Peninsula, Alexander bowled the team to victory by 3 runs. He cleaned up Peninsula’s top scorer in the tightest game of the season. This game also highlighted Dean’s first ever 25 over retirement (36 no) whilst sharing a big partnership with James (78 no)

 The local derby against “Electric”. As usual it brought the best out of the team with a solid win built around David’s first ever fifty (51 runs). In the end we had 4 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses with the team finishing a very credible 5th place in the 9 team competition. All the boys contributed throughout the season and a brief summary of their individual efforts is described below.

Alexander Brinkman – Alexander’s cricket really improved as the season progressed. He would always go out to bat with the intention of scoring runs and entertaining the crowd whilst his bowling got quicker each game. As noted above, he contributed to one of the highlights of the season and ended up with 5 wickets against Division 1 batsmen. Well done Alexander. Season figures: 5 wickets @ 25.8 runs each, economy rate 4.01 runs per over with best bowling being 2 for 11.

Ben Wickham – Ben was the deserved recipient of the “Storm” Batting Award for his consistent batting that regularly kept the team in the game. He achieved representative honors for MWDCA in the Under ll Creak Shield team which is a testament to his cricket talent and great training attitude. Next season one of Ben’s goals should be to score his first 50 (the first of many!). Season figures:160 runs @ 26.7 runs each with a highest score of 29.

Ben Lyon – as the season moved on Ben got more into the groove with his cricket. His fielding improved and his bowling became more deadly for the opposition. He twice finished with 2 wickets in a match and was getting behind the ball well in the field. Ben finished the season in style against St Augustines Green with his second 2 wicket haul. Season figures: 6 wickets @ 29.0 runs each, economy rate 4.70 runs per over with best bowling being 2 for 9.

Darcy Munce – our most economical bowler (averaging 2.62 runs per over) which is why Darcy bowled the most overs of any “Storm” bowler (51 overs). Mostly opening the bowling, Darcy could be relied upon to restrict the best of the opposition batsmen with his accurate medium pacers. The last game demonstrated that when Darcy gets “ticked off” with his game, he is able to refocus quickly and produce his best performances. Darcy should be well pleased with his season. Season figures: 7 wickets @ 18.9 runs each, economy rate 2.62 runs per over with best bowling being 1 for 7.

David Dwyer – a season of mixed emotions can best sum up the summer for David. A very gifted cricketer when he is switched on to the game at hand, David proved his cricket abilities with his highest ever score (51 runs!) against the tough “Electric” team. David has the talent to really progress higher in cricket once he adopts a dedicated approach to cricket practice. David will then see more consistent and match-winning performances on match days. With a season aggregate of 86 runs from 7 innings (top score of 51 and an average of 14.3) and 3 wickets at 31.7 runs apiece, David should be looking forward to next season as the opportunity to really showcase his considerable talent.

Dean Meadows –Dean is one of the most respected players in the team who never stops trying his best. A delight to coach, Dean will always give 100% in the field and when he’s batting. He enjoyed prowling the covers or donning the wicket keeping gloves with the grace of Ian Healy. “Deano” is well know for his attacking ability with the bat, but it was his patient and quality innings against Peninsula (as mentioned in the team highlights) that shows he is gaining maturity as a batsman. More of those innings next season Deano! Season figures:105 runs @ 15.0 runs each with a highest score of 36 no

Dylan Moss – what a difference a season makes! Dylan had a great season and was very close to winning the most improved player of the season. Dylan became our steadfast opening batsman which was highlighted by his man-of-the match performance against Seaforth when he retired after batting 15 overs. Along with his consistent ability to get behind the fast ball, Dylan’s dedication to practice has improved remarkably. Well done Dylan on a great season. Season figures: 46 runs @ 5.8 runs each with a highest score of 13 (also bowled 1 over with figss of 1 for 2).

Giles Devaney – Giles arrived at the “Storm” in only his second season of cricket but with a desire that should be a benchmark for many players. He was consistently practicing hard and this resulted in Giles improving extraordinarily. He finished the season with 2 man-of-the-match awards (vs Harbord ~ 0/16 off 8 overs and Wakehurst ~ 3/9 off 5 overs) for his consistently accurate bowling. With his determination to succeed, Giles has a bright future in the game. Congratulations Giles on a great season. Season figures:7 wickets @ 16.9 runs each, economy rate 3.11 runs per over with best bowling being 3 for 9.

James Boyer – he is happiest when he is dressed in whites and playing cricket with his mates. James was able to bowl again this season after overcoming his foot injury from last season and enjoyed being constantly involved in the game. James had a great season both with his club and rep teams and was awarded the Don Leach Batting Award from the club. With 2 scores over 70 and a 48 no, James relished the responsibility of being the team’s senior batsman whilst also contributing with his bowling and consistent wicket keeping. It was a season “Jimbo” should be proud to remember. Season figures:- 286 runs @ 57.2 runs average with a highest score of 80. 12 wickets @ 11.6 runs each, economy rate 2.96 runs per over with best bowling being 4 for 24.

Jake Jenkins – Jake arrived at the “Storm” at the start of the season and fitted into the team with ease. His friendly and polite nature did not stop his desire to “have a go” and was justly awarded with his first wicket in Division 1 cricket. Jake was a great trainer and it was very evident his cricket skills were improving as the season progressed. It was very sad to see Jake leave for Western Australia before Christmas as he was a valued member of the team. Season figures: - 1 wicket @ 49 runs, economy rate 4.08 runs per over with best bowling being 1 for 21.

Matt Wickham – along with Dylan was our other batting rock that would make opposition bowlers cringe with frustration. Although not as fluid with his run scoring this season, Matt developed a technique that was very tight against many fast bowling attacks whilst also having the ability to deliver consistent medium pacers against opposition batsmen. He was awarded representative honours in the MWIDCA team which helped 34 Junior Team Reports develop his confidence and cricket skills as the season progressed. Matt’s dedication to his cricket game will see his game expand and improve as the seasons roll on.Well done Matt! Season figures: 20 runs @ 2.5 runs average with a highest score of 6. 3 wickets @ 19.3 runs each, economy rate 3.05 runs per over with best bowling being 1 for 6.

Max Cassidy – Max’s cricket abilities (batting, bowling and fielding) are well known around Collaroy. This season it took a little while for these talents to emerge, but when they did it was worth the wait. Innings against Wakehurst and St Augustines at the back end of the season showed that Max has the potential to make some really big scores in this competition. With a little more focus and concentration at critical times, Max will end up with batting and bowling figures that will be very impressive. I look forward to seeing plenty of runs and bags of wickets from Max next season. Season figures: - 53 runs @ 8.8 runs average with a highest score of 13 no 2 wickets @ 48.0 runs each, economy rate 3.56 runs per over with best bowling being 1 for 18.

Riley Thomas – Riley is one boy who really loves his cricket. Riley played only his second season of cricket this year and consistently batted and bowled like he’s been playing for 10 years. He deservedly won the team bowling award but this could easily have been an allrounder award based on his contributions to the team. With his desire and dedication to the game it will not be long before Riley is awarded with representative honours. Congratulations on a great season Riley. Season figures: 74 runs @ 14.8 runs average with a highest score of 28 no 9 wickets @ 15.2 runs each, economy rate 2.80 runs per over with best bowling being 2 for 15.

To all the parents, thank you for your ongoing support during the season. Your helpful guidance and efforts with the boys makes such a positive difference to their cricket. I would also like to make a particular “thanks” to Kevin and Bruce for their extended help with the practices and the scoring. Your efforts made my role as coach so much easier. Lastly I wish all the boys the best in their cricket for the future. It’s a game that is hard to master, but its heaps of fun trying! Good luck with it.

35 Junior Team Reports UNDER 12/1 ‘Electric’

To say it was a disjointed season is an understatement to say the least. Games that were there to be won were washed out in the second week. Along with that the amount of training sessions lost to wet weather did not allow the kids to get any momentum or continuity in their games. In saying that though we had some wonderful personal achievements, along with some notable improvements. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents, all of whom attend the games and are actively involved with scoring. Special thanks must go to Clare Filmer-Ramsay for managing the side, Jim Ramsay, Neil Hinchcliffe and Geoff Rogers for the time they gave up to umpire.

Emily (Emm) Carden: Winner of the most improved player award. Improved her bowling beyond belief. By the end of the year she was troubling even the best of batsmen with her bounce and accuracy. Ariel (Airy) Norris: Actively involved and her fielding skills improved greatly through the season. Along with Em entertained the crowd with their dance routines. Angus (Gussy) Demol: The thorn in the side of all bowling attacks with his determination not to allow them to get on top. His skills behind the stumps bringing comments from other coaches. Achieved U12 MWDCA REP HONOURS, also making the U13 NSW EMERGING BLUES SQUAD.

Liam (Lee) Filmer-Ramsay: The winner of the all-rounder award. Great with the ball. (At this stage most batsmen are not good enough to get the bat on the ball). Equally at home with a bat in his hands. Achieved U12 MWDCA REP HONOURS, also making the U13 NSW EMERGING BLUES SQUAD. Zac (Zaccy) Trewartha: Bowled without luck all season, with balls just dropping into gaps, or over slips’ heads. His consistent line and length and his ability to swing the ball made life a misery for batsmen. Achieved U11 MWDCA REP HONOURS. Sam (Sammy) Filmer-Ramsay: Found his feet in the opening position which enabled the team to get off to a good start. Achieved U11 MW IDCA REP HONOURS. Jack (Hammer) Ollerhead: Winner of the team bowling award, gained metres in pace this year, vaulting him into one of the opening bowler roles this year, also improved with the bat. He is on the cusp of achieving rep honours. Max (Pepsi) Hinchliffe: A valuable team player who has worked very hard on his batting technique. The results of this hard work will show in the near future. Ross (Hammy) Bacon: A newbie to the team this season, after he and his family moved to Aust from the mother country. Took a little while to settle in, but has shown he has plenty of ability and became a valuable member of the team. Harry (The Cougar) Rogers: The quite achiever of the team, consistent, hard working team player who is starting to show the abilities we all know he has. Has a great set of hands, and will trouble bowling attacks for many years to come. Jordan (Jordie) Hammond: The entertainer. Has faced his demons and found a spot at the top of the batting order. Jordie brings the crowds back to the game with his entertaining ways and is often heard giving the opposition a full description of his previous shot. Nick (Gillette) James: Unfortunately, we lost Nick half way through the season to Coomera Hope Island Cricket Club on the Gold Coast. Nick was a well-liked member of the team and it was very sad to see him go. Fortunately he is now playing with a team that has 6 ex-local parents who attended Cromer High. Patrick (Pat) Flakelar: Only came to the team for the last two games of the season. Bowls express pace, and with some work could turn into a damaging bowler. Coach Duncan Demol

36 Junior Team Reports UNDER 11/1 ‘Power’ First season of traditional cricket for the boys and following a shaky start in the first game we settled down to have an excellent season, with 5 wins, 5 losses and 3 draws. I might add that we batted first in our 3 draws and were in a very strong position in each game. Our strength was definitely our batting which was very impressive, scoring only 40 runs less for the season than the undefeated premiers. On the other hand the area we will need to try and improve on is our bowling and taking more wickets.

Glyn Archer – Batting was very solid with top scores of 31no and 24no and was also unluckily run out a couple of times. Only took 4 wickets however if he bowls like he did in the final game, 3 overs 1/5, a lot more wickets will come his way. Highlights were his 31no batting for 25 overs against St Augustines and his bowling performance in the last game. Max Bertok – Had a few ducks come his way when batting but when he got set at the crease he batted very well and played some nice shots. Top scores of 17 and 12 twice. Again his fielding was excellent but it was his bowling that really improved. He only took 3 wickets but it was his 0/2 off 3 overs with 2 maidens and no sundries in the second last game that was the highlight. Zach Buchberger – Again showed a lot of potential but just needs to be more patient with his batting and bowling. Often threw his wicket away with an impatient shot after looking really good. His season highlight was an outstanding one day game against Seaforth where he took 2/15 and guided us home for a win with 18no. Jake Carden – Outstanding performance all round. Had top scores of 87no, 46, 38no and 32no to finish with an average of 65.8 and an aggregate of 329 and win the Association’s major batting awards. Proved very hard to score off when bowling taking 12 wickets for 82 off 48 overs and also took 9 catches. Highlight was his game against St Augustines where he scored his first half century, 87no and took 5/15. Wyatt Crawley – Was awarded our most improved player award mainly due to his bowling performance. He has developed into one of our best bowlers with season figures of 4/102 off 34 overs. Highlights were Wyatt bowling his outswingers to 3 slips and a gully up at the Plateau with a catch going to third slip. Opening the batting and remaining at the crease for 15 overs against a rep attack from Harbord was another highlight. Craig Feeney – Another player who shows a lot of potential however just needs to put all together at the same time. Regularly would mix his bowling spell with very good overs and not so good overs to affect his figures. Just when he would look good batting, would get out hitting an easy catch, so just needs to learn to keep the ball on the ground. Highlights were his 17 before retiring hurt against St Augustines and 0/1 off 2 overs against Seaforth. Joshua Gates – A welcome return to our team from a season off and was our most inspirational player. Broke his wrist on return from the Christmas break and couldn’t bat, however still turned up to every training session and every game. Always bowled a very tidy line and length. Highlights were his direct hit runout with his broken wrist, unselfish batting against Seaforth which led to a win and 2/27 off 6 overs against Wakehurst in the first game. Charlie Jormanainen – A very deceptive bowler who bowls a very good line and length and varies his pace and delivery types. Deservedly won our very tightly fought bowling award with season figures of 36 overs 6/98 at an average of 2.72. Always valued his wicket very highly when batting and was involved in several good partnerships. Highlights were his 2/7 against Seaforth and scoring 12 in a 49 run 7th wicket batting partnership with Jake at the Plateau that nearly won us a one day game. Michael Jonker – Joined our team after the Christmas break and was a very welcome addition, especially with Josh breaking his wrist. Showed lots of talent and was one of three of our players to score a half century. Showed some nice pace when bowling and was great in the field. Highlights were scoring his 50 on the last ball of a maximum 15 overs in a one day match at Griffith and his 2/11 off 3 overs against Harbord. Chris Lawson – Developing into a very good keeper/batsmen. When we didn’t have Chris behind the stumps we really struggled with the number of sundries, in fact sundries were cut in half when he was keeping. Also batted very consistently in the second half of the season with scores of 11, 16no, 15no and 11no. Highlights were his wicketkeeping, 11no against a very good bowling attack from Harbord. Sean McFarlane – Has a very good eye for the ball and with a bit more concentration could achieve a lot better stats. At times proved very difficult to get out and was involved in some valuable partnerships because of this. Highlights were definatley his batting performance against the premiers Peninsula where he stoutly batted for 25 overs before retiring and his call of “that’s five bucks” when he took a catch. Daniel Priest – As far as awards go, probably the unluckiest player. Had a terrific season more often than not opening the batting and had scores of 60no, 17 and 11. A very economical bowler who varies his deliveries between leg spin and medium pace. Finished with figures of 37 overs 6/102 to just be shaded by Charlie for the bowling award. Highlights were his first half century 60no and partnership with Jake against St Augustines and his 1/0 off 3 overs against Seaforth. Damon Steel – Consistently very good with the bat with scores of 23no, 20, 32no, 33no, 21, 24no and 20. He scored a total of 210 runs at an average of 26.25 to finish 5th in the Association and deservedly earned the teams’ batting award. Also bowled with good pace taking 6 for 110 off 38 overs. Highlight was his partnership with Sean and 32no in 25 overs against the Peninsula and 33no against Cromer taking us through to the 50 overs.

Some of my personal highlights were seeing the boys develop in their first year of traditional cricket, the 3 boys who scored their first half century for their club (Jake, Daniel and Michael) and Jake’s 5 wicket haul against St Augustines. My biggest highlight however, and most vivid memory of the season was watching Sean walking from the field to a standing ovation after batting for 25 overs and retiring against what was by far the best bowling attack in the competition. He only scored 8 not out but his innings was crucial in us reaching the 50 overs

Once again thank you to all the players for another very enjoyable season. Thanks to Rick Archer for his assistance at training and at the games, to Graham Crawley for scoring throughout the whole season (and for starting the boundary marking process each week by positioning his chair on arrival), and to Rob Steel for sharing the umpiring duties. Thank you again to all the parents for their strong support and help at training and on game day.

UNDER 11/2 ‘Energy’ Several new members joined the “Energy” team this season, with some being newcomers to the game of cricket.

The season commenced slowly with a few losses, (and a fair share of washed out fixtures and training sessions) but as the boys improved their skills and understanding of the game, confidence grew within the team. Their performance in both batting and bowling saw marked improvements. At the start of the season our bowling gave away many wides, by the end of the season wides became few and far between. The end of the season finished on a high with “Energy” finishing third on the ladder in their division - equal placing with our friendly rivals the CPCC “Thunder”. The local derby when our two teams met at Griffith Park being one of the highlights of the season.

Special thanks to our manager Dave Allison for being very efficient and supportive throughout the season and to all the parents for their dedication and support towards the team. Congratulations to all the boys, Ben Alison, Bradley Baber, William Brouggy, Robert Fabbro, Matthew Grenot, Jarrod O’Flaherty, Kristofer Martyn, Jake Matthews, George McLellan, Tommy Moran, Jake Neal, Oliver Scherer and Nicholas Stanton, for making the team a joy to coach. Hopefully they got as much out of the game of cricket as I did. Team Awards 2007-2008: Tommy Moran, Robert Fabbro, Bradley Baber

Let the team spirit live on forever. Joe Fabbro Coach.

38 Junior Team Reports UNDER 11/2 ‘Thunder’

The U11 “Thunder” team was newly formed this season when sufficient new players turned up to register in this age group thereby creating a second side in the Div2 comp. Instantly, a new rivalry was also created with the existing CPCC “Energy” team competing in the same league.

Of the 13 players who represented “Thunder” in the season only three had played before, and the coach had never coached before, so there was a steep learning curve to be climbed.

The season started with a defeat to Seaforth and it was round 4 before the first win was chalked up, this being the only pre-Christmas victory. This is not as bad a record as it might seem as the English style weather had put paid to three matches and one week was a bye. Keen training and a never say die attitude started to yield results in the new year as our novices turned into budding young cricketers. An easy win in our second match against Seaforth showed how far the team had come and 17 points were gained from a possible 20 in the second half of the season. This effort saw “Thunder” rocket up the table and in a nail-biting finish pulled level with “Energy”, who appear to have finished third on the table to “Thunder’s” fourth on an alphabetical technicality.

It seems churlish to pick out individuals in such a great team effort but convention dictates that we chose a best batsman – Joshua MacMahon who lost his wicket only once all season, on the last day (thanks in part to some slippery fingered opponents!); a best bowler – Kayin Wratt; and best for all round effort and our emerging wicket keeper – Jayden Richardson-McMahon.

A great set of kids with supportive parents and a star of a manager in Helene MacMahon added up to a pleasure of a season for all concerned.

Andrew Pettifer Coach

39 Junior Team Reports UNDER 10/1 ‘Surge’

The Surge enjoyed another very enjoyable and productive season of cricket this year. Over the past two seasons this team has developed into a close knit group of players, parents and siblings. This has translated into the players having a great deal of fun together, on and off the field, including the new players to the team, Kieren Clark and Nicholas Ferris.

One of the key qualities of this team has been its ability to successfully take on new challenges in the development of their cricket. Individually and as a team, the Surge players have grown enormously as cricketers which has been a reflection of their ability to focus on and work hard to attain their personal and team goals. Initially the major challenge facing the team was adjusting to the hard ball. Next, it was developing a fluent run up and bowling action. Later in the season technical aspects of batting and stroke play became the focus. It was a highlight in the latter half of the season seeing players excel in each of these areas and watching under 10s incorporate a genuine front foot drive and cut shot into their repertoire of strokes. The major strength of this team though was its bowling, with the ability to regularly take wickets with consistently accurate, good length bowling.

The skill development made by the players was largely the result of the effort of co coach Bruce Forder. Bruce devoted a great of time working with individual players on specific technique. Add to this the contribution of parents Carlos Ferreira and Ashley Parker and the player to coach ratio at training was better than the Australian cricket team! A special thank you to our manager Sheree Nixon who has again done an outstanding job. Sheree has excelled in her role of scorer, photographer and organiser of everything. Congratulations to all Surge players on an outstanding season and look forward to it all again next year. Roy Vumbaca Co coach

40 Junior Team Reports UNDER 10/1 ‘Force’

It was my pleasure to coach this team once again. We opted for the Division 1 competition and made the change from the plastic ball to the hard leather ball this season. This took a bit of time but all boys tried very hard and learned the value of all the protective gear.

The “Force” team members were: Zach Beavan, Lachlan Channell, Lochlan Charley, Ben Donlan, Samuel Gair, Tom Lloyd, Billy McGuire, Aaron Peters, Jack Pickering, Jack Shultz, Aaron Stevens, Thomas van Bokhoven and Mathew Weight. All boys were very keen to play, improved a great amount as the season went along and they all enjoyed their cricket. We won more games than we lost and finished in the top 4 teams. All games were hard fought and were exciting for the players, coach and for our loyal spectators.

Team awards went to: Batting: Aaron Stevens Bowling: Samuel Gair Most Improved: Mathew Weight.

I wish we could give more awards because all the boys tried that hard. Team hat tricks were taken and some great fielding and classic catches made all games memorable. Thanks again to our manager Adam, to all the Dads that helped score and umpire, and to all the Mums that supplied the coffee.

I hope to see you all again next year.

Darryl Stevens Coach.

41 Junior Team Reports UNDER 9/1 ‘Kilowatts’

Well, another year has passed and what a great performance by the team throughout the 07/08 season. With some new blood and some so- called “old heads”, the team’s performance was outstanding.

The platform was set out at the start of the season by the coaches that respect, communication and encouragement at all times was required, not only on the field but also at training and the boys produced well.

Fielding was great and running between wickets constant. The “Kilowatts” boys were also able to bowl a consistent line and length to the opposing sides thereby enabling the opposition to enjoy the freedom to hit and swing. (Our boys unfortunately received plenty of unplayable deliveries week after week!)

Thanks to all the boys for their great efforts all season. Parents too, your efforts each week in turning up to the games to support your child and to support the team and the coaches was outstanding. Extra thanks to our manager Tina, who would provide SPECIAL edible delights after each game; we thank you very much.

We look forward to the 08/09 season ahead. Jason Brown / Jason Blayney Coaches Team Awards: Batting Award: Hayden Brown Bowling Award: Mitchell Donnelly Most Improved: Luke Donlan

UNDER 9/1 ‘Megawatts’

For most of the boys this was their first cricket season. Our emphasis was therefore on teaching the boys basic cricket skills and to enjoy playing the game. We were grateful to Daniel Hanavan who led our training sessions and patiently coached them. In the first few rounds some of the boys had difficulties reaching the stumps and bowling straight. The first wickets for the season were taken by William Longhurst and James Finlay, whose bowling techniques were not always conventional but often proved effective! As the rounds progressed we were pleased at how the boys improved. We finally got our first win in round 12 when the boys managed to lose only 1 wicket and took 6. The wicket takers were Ellis Raymond 3, Vern Smallacombe-Brown 2 and William Longhurst. Matthew Sullivan hit his first 4 of the season and went on to to be one of our highest scorers. The team performance was outstanding with all boys concentrating and fielding well.

Our star batting partnership of the season was Ellis Raymond and Vern Smallacombe-Brown. These two boys could really swing the bat and usually delivered a few 4’s and the occasional 6. These boys were also consistent fast bowlers taking several wickets.

At season’s end, the batting award went to Ellis Raymond. Nicholas Marsh consistently bowled straight and by the end of the season was taking a wicket or two each game and subsequently was given this years bowling award. He looks to be a promising fast bowler in the future with a hint of swing.

The boys improved each week as the season progressed resulting in winning two more matches and came close in most of the remaining matches. We were pleased by how much progress the boys made. Harrison Worth, who at the beginning of the season found it hard to bowl, improved so much that he took two wickets in our final game. Shaun Falzarano was also a quiet starter at the beginning of the season, but as his confidence grew each week; his contribution with the bat and in the field was valued. Dylan Ferguson had to miss much of the season as he injured his arm in October and couldn’t play again until February. When he did return, he excelled in the field where he took several catches.

If we had had a training award it would have gone to Harrison Hanavan who didn’t miss any training sessions and whose bowling improved incredibly. The recipient of the most improved player award was Toby Rutherford who by the end of the season proved himself to be one of the best all rounders in the team.

Thanks to all the parents who actively supported the boys and shared with the duties during the season.

Great season boys. Hope to see everyone back next year!

43 Junior Team Reports KANGA ‘Electrodes’

The team started the season with the full excitement that normally accompanies a group of 6 - 7 year olds. There was a great deal of energy and passion that helped to form the foundation of a good cricket team. All players bonded extremely well and formed some wonderful friendships, which showed out on the cricket pitch. There was many a celebration at the taking of a wicket and lots of high fives on the scoring of a run.

Whilst there were some periods where the concentration seemed to fall a little, namely when playing with the dirt and grass rather than focusing on the fielding, the boys did very well to encourage one another to perform to their best.

As coach, I am really pleased and proud of each young player and the most important element of all, that they each had fun and want to play again next year. Well done boys and one day I hope to see you on television playing for Australia.

I would like to thank our team manager Alex Vumbaca for her wonderful organization skills. Thanks also to all the parents for their support and encouragement.

44 Junior Team Reports KANGA ‘Electrons’

Well another year of Kanga cricket has come to a close and what an inconsistent year it was. After a very stop-start commencement to the season due to rain the boys really got a move on and embraced the true spirit of Cricket. We had a wonderful team of kids ranging from first year players - young boys wanting to get an early taste of the game - to a few seasoned campaigners who really blossomed this season.

Our first year players Billy Barwell, Joey Caruso, Sam Edgley, Sam Kelly, Lachlan McInnes and Michael Werner were all just wonderful and all had some very special moments throughout the year. Our more seasoned campaigners in Xavier Trevaskis, Luke van Bokhoven, Jamie Donnelly, Thomas Trevaskis and Connor Hickey continued to improve and are certainly ready for the step up to Under 9’s next season.

We came up against some sides this year that were certainly older and more developed, and in some cases had been coached to the minute which made it difficult for the boys to win as many games as they would have liked. In saying that however, I believe there was not a game for the year where the “Electrons” were not extremely competitive. More importantly I believe every boy enjoyed each and every week. The Mums and Dads would inform me that the kids were up and ready to go at around 6am most Saturday mornings.

I would like to thank Alicen and Frank van Bokhoven for their continued support through out the season as well as all the Mums and Dads who helped with coaching, umpiring and scoring each week. Special thanks to Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club for the continued investment in junior cricket. As always Vicki Carden drives the success of junior cricket in this region and along with her husband Steve I say “thanks” for your tireless investment into junior cricket and CPCC.

It is truly the greatest game on earth and I sincerely hope every boy continues on into the future. Michael Trevaskis Coach - Kanga ‘Electrons’

KANGA ‘Neutrons’ The Kanga "Neutrons" were the newest and yougest players to don the "Water Tower" logo and Club colours this season.

Looking very cute in their floppy hats the boys had a lot of fun and improved their cricket skills greatly as the season progressed. It's a major achievement to get the ball on the pitch when you are starting cricket fresh at 5 years of age ....let alone to get it down to the other end!

Thanks to Graeme Faulkner for his coaching input and patience and to Anastasia Mayo for her organisation in the role of team manager.

Thanks also to all parents that helped out at training and at games. Last but not least thanks to the "Neutrons" for entertaining the parents.

Points of Note:

A major overhaul has been underway of the stats database which has resulted in significant new data being added and some adjustments being made. The new database allows for more efficient and capable sorting of stats. It now includes every player with a recorded statistic for CPCC.

The exercise has also unearthed several players with significant achievements not recognised to date.  Warwick Dolman – Career average of 8.25 (115 wickets) is the best average for bowlers with 100+ wickets.  Andrew Brown – 63 wickets in a season 1n 1981/82 was the 7th best season all-time.  Col Gray – 194 career wickets is the 26th highest

Batting:  The biggest story in stats this year was Dave Moss’ new Club record of 179* breaking Mike Riggall and Paul Brown’s 33 year old mark.  Andrew Sewell bumps Bert Elsworthy from the top ten for Most Runs All-time.  Fast Movers - Dave Moss 35 to 29, Dan Peters 66 to 57, Jas Ferris 57 to 48.  Pete Henriksen’s average, after dropping below 30 for the first time since 1994/95 last season, is back to 30.56 thanks to his stellar season (the gee up in last year’s report worked wonders!).

Bowling  Marty Laird (111) and Matt Moore (119) are the newest entries into the 100+ wicket list.  Greg Bruckard (497) went past Richardson (482) and Peter Bell (491) into 3rd place for most wickets alltime. GB has announced his retirement only 3 wickets short of the 500 barrier.  Luke Ireland moved past Nick Paten and Doug McGrath into 15th place most wickets alltime.

Club Season Awards & Records Qualification – Batting 8 innings, Bowling 15 wkts. (Finals included). For seasons shortened significantly by forfeits, washouts or other, season awards qualifications will be reduced accordingly at the discretion of the Committee.
