The one true veteran is sophomore Matt Fry. He tagged after the senior group last year. Now he’s the top man on Towson’s leaderboard. “Matt is incredibly consistent,” says Yaniger of his only letter winner. “We don’t need him to shoot 66 or 67 every time out, just to play steady golf which he is capable of doing.” Fry flashed his potential last spring when he finished ninth in a field of 110 golfers at the Villanova Wildcat Invitational. The half veteran face belongs to sophomore Joe Gunerman, the only other returning player to swing a club for Towson last year. “I don’t think I’ve had a player who has improved the leaps and bounds as quickly as Joe,” says Yaniger. “He was a “B” team guy for us last year, never made the travel squad, shot a bunch of 80’s. Our assistant coach Jeff Castle has been working with him and it’s certainly paying off. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Joe isn’t a medalist sometime this spring.” Gunerrman took his only swat in 2010-11 in the Towson Fireline Invitational, carding an 84-77 to finish 61st. This past fall he answered the call to become the Tigers’ number two player, averaging 76.0. He posted his best effort in the opener at the Maryland Intercollegiate with a 2-over par and collegiate 54-hole low of 215 that tied him for 24th. His second round 67 in that event is his collegiate low.
